140 Year Old Stock Streak In Jeopardy

Tyler Durden's picture

Via Dana Lyons' Tumblr,

The U.S. stock market has not been lower for any year ending in a “5″ since 1875…that streak is in jeopardy.

Just a fun one today: A year ago, we posted a chart showing the returns of the S&P 500 (S&P Composite before 1950) for years ending in “5″. As it turns out, the index has been positive the last 13 times during such years. The last negative year was 1875. Well, that streak is in jeopardy. Through yesterday, December 23, the S&P 500 was up 0.25%.

So with a week to go in 2015, the pressure is on for this 140 year old streak. For those curious, the number to watch is 2058.90, i.e., last year’s closing price on the S&P 500.

What is the takeaway? Nothing.

Do you have any idea how people lived in 1875 in America?? If you put most people in that time, 99% wouldn't survive!

any aged oligarchy becomes a problem. In the old USSR a geriatric oligarchy, themselves concerned about their own liability in a Nuremburg trials scenario, essentially dropped the Iron Curtain until they all died out.

In the USA a progressively criminally inclined oligarchy basically is making political decisions that serve primarily to keep the lid on past crimes-at least going back to JFK.

as geriatric oligarchies become more frantic, the loss of freedoms of the general public are required in order that they successfully keep the lid on more and more stories.

The loss of freedoms leads to economic atrophy

1875 was at the beginning of the new The United States of America and the end of These united States of America.

United by the barrel of a gun, then as now.

Let freedom ring...

Talking about streaks, the Chicago police just broke their streak for killing single black males. The AP reports that a Chicago cop just killed a man and a woman in their home, the woman apparently phoning about a domestic disturbance.  The 19 year-old man had a metal baseball bat.  Odds are, he has mental problems and the woman is his aunt.  What a police force!

December 26 at 12:54 PM

CHICAGO — A Chicago police officer shot and killed two people early Saturday while responding to a domestic disturbance call on the city’s West Side, police said.

The Cook County medical examiner identified the man killed as 19-year-old Quientonio Legreir and the woman as 55-year-old Betty R. Jones. Both victims were black and from Chicago.

Police did not disclose the race of the officer or release the officer’s current work status.

Jones was pronounced dead at 4:51 a.m. at Loretto Hospital. Legreir was pronounced dead at 5:14 a.m. at Stroger Hospital. Autopsies have not been scheduled, medical examiner’s office spokeswoman Becky Schlikerman said.

The Chicago Police Department said in a statement that the shootings happened around 4:25 a.m. Saturday after officers who responded to the call “were confronted by a combative subject.”

Police said the shooting is under investigation and the case has been referred to the city’s main police oversight agency.

Why am I getting the idea that some folks are bored over this 3.5 day market holiday?

Since the topic was brought up.... The record streak will not be broken this year simply because HFT is now the order of the day for market action.  TPTB will insist on a green close for all indexes.  It has nothing to do with tradition.

They just needed a central bank to print up a couple quadrillion and everyone sing kumbaya. Easy Peezy.

Note: I am seeing more and more of this on search engines. Soon the free internet will be useless.

2 big failed new higher highs and we're at the end of the cycle. And with earnings set to come out in the next weeks, it's a done deal.

Will Plunge Protection Team interfere and push the market higher on low volume?

It may well do it. They still have some secret means to push the market higher, but how and when they do it is only for insiders to know.

The market is rigged, and we have to be on the side of the FED in order to win..... at least for the next few years. Because the way things are going, the US dollar won't be forever the world's reserve currency.

Stocks as paper vehicles can be pushed wherever TPTB (PPT, CBs, etc. ) want them to be. NIRP could become a problem (bank runs) which is why they push for cashless societies. The PMs are a problem once the western vaults are empty... then they have to buy back their leased-out metals at MUCH higher prices (from the BRICS, good luck with that), but that might be their plan anyway... Either way, it's all rigged, so good luck trading these "markets".
