Tracking People Flows: Global Migration Summarized In 7 Charts
With the topic of global (im)migration getting increasingly more
prominence as we get ever closer to the presidential elections, not to
mention Europe's ongoing plight with the biggest refugee crisis since
World War II, here is a
handful of factual, and bias-free, charts summarizing the key aspects
of global human mobility.
First, here is a summary tracker of global people flows since the start of the century. The countries in gray are sources of net people outflows, while those in blue have seen cumulative immigration over the past 15 years.
For some, actually make that many, nations the rise in the immigrant population is the only thing preventing the total population from shrinking.
It's not just Europe.
But Germany definitely has a problem.
The result is that, at least in Europe, the percentage of foreign-born residents is rising with every passing year.
The US appears headed in the same direction.
Even as the working foreigners do their best to share some of their newly-founded "wealth" with friend and family stuck back home and who have been less fortunate.

I was under the impression that Colombia was one of the better places to go to nowadays in SA. Anyone here care to explain why the country has seen net expats recently?
I am curious because it is one of the places that I was considering dipping out to when things get too sketchy here in the USSA.
Aside from that, are there any other countries that you Hedgers recommend for expating to?

It's somewhat backwards and forwards with their FARC issues. But you are right in one way; the degree of consensus that the incessant civil war destroys more than it builds up has been growing. Why don't you take a look at Escobar's Hippos and then make up your mind.
As with most things - it depends. Do you have a bunch of money? If yes, then New Z is a really good bet. Not so much $, then Phillipines is great bang for the buck outside of Manila. Really low on cash, try Paraguay or any of the countries in the region, or any of the down on their luck europe countries like Greece or Romania.
Places I have visited that are to be avoided at all cost: Africa, Middle East, Mexico, China, and Central America. Your life isnt worth much in any of those places.
If you need or anticipate needing medical care, the countries that have a business built upon medical tourism should be considered.
Hungary is full of people with advanced degrees, including medicine and dentistry, trying to drum up business. But the language is difficult and you won't find many English-speakers outside of Budapest. Still, Obuda is a wonderful place to settle if you like city life, all the amenities including medical and a good smattering of kids with enough English to find a translator on the spot at a roadside kabob stand.
Were I to become an expat, Africa would be at the top of my list. Madagascar is my target.

Geographically isolated in the Southern Hemisphere, we are less likely to be impacted by any of the activity occurring in the Northern Hemisphere - particularly the heavy pollution, or radiation in the event of nuclear fall out. Furthermore, NZ boasts a high level of economic freedom, and our economy is relatively resilient in that we would be able to sustain ourselves at least agriculturally if (when) global trade halts for any given reason. Additionally, NZ is rated one of the most peaceful places to live, and we uphold good international relations and are unlikely to be targetted in the event of war. It's relatively easy to get residency here and when compared to other Western countries our culture tends to be very accepting of diversity.
Although we are likely to feel climate change in the coming decades, our unique mountainous geography ensures that rain will always make its way to our soils - hence the nickname 'land of the long white cloud'. Finally, of the Western nations, we are one of the 'youngest' and have less sovereign debt than most. Our economy has been widely regarded as a safe option for investment diversification in preparation for the coming collapse - particularly by Schiff, and there is a great deal of speculation domestically that New Zealand farmland is being gobbled up by the 'elite' to serve as a bug-out safe haven after shit hits the fan. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in this geopolitical and economic climate, and we New Zealanders will happily welcome anyone who is willing to contribute positively to our economy in seeking to retreat from the turmoil of the Northern Hemisphere!

Haha yeah good point, hadn't thought about that. Chances are that the population/government wouldn't allow migrants in those numbers - we only have a population of 4mil or so, so we def don't have the infrastructure to support mass immigration. We do however have an 'aging population', and like most other Western nations, we will require skilled migrants to keep things running. You're bang on that we're being bought out etc, but I'm still standing by my previous comment that NZ is a safer place to be than smack bang in the middle of Europe, or anywhere in the vicinity of the US. We're fucked in terms of imports/exports, and yes our dominant industry is dairy - but what I'm saying is that in the event that global trade is disrupted, we could easily feed our own small population with what we produce. We have access to thousands of miles of beaches for seafood, 'kaimoana' as we call it. Plenty of fertile farmable land etc. I'd love to know which country you suggest as the ideal place to sit out this global clusterfuck... Most sane people will agree that the Southern hemisphere is ideal, and Nz has got to be the best country in the south - in my own biased opinion.

Your major export is milk, with 1 major trading partner: China. You have no manufacturing, but import almost everything. It is practically impossible to save any money because everything is so expensive and wages are low. one third of the population works for the government.

Ecuador comes recommended. Especially the city of Cuenca. Cheapest place to live well by some accounts. Decent medical services and climate too.
I'm a big fan of the Southern Hemisphere. Some Latin American countries look very attractive. Chile has one of the lowest population densities on Earth, 2000-mile long coast line and every climate range earth offers except for jungle with vast deserts, Andes mountains, sprawling countryside and Alpine mountain ranges in the deep south. Most of the population lives in the Santiago metropolitan area and 2-3 coastal enclaves.
Paraguay, Uruguay and Ecaudor all look good as well. If Argentina ever pulls its head out of its ass would be a viable option.
Latin culture suits my disposition. The food is good, they know their wines and I'm a sucker for brunettes. Learning Spanish might be a chore, but it'll keep the brain young.
My money's on Latin America.

It doesn't make a lot of sense to discuss migration waves without the excessive population growth of the last 50 years or so. Syria quadrupled their population, Pakistan and Bangla Desh tripled, etc. But the economies have not expanded accordingly so you get unemployment, idleness, group formation and boom the civil unrest leads to wars. Then the mega-corporations start to mingle and think they can take advantage of the situation and encourage governments to shoot a pipeline route free. Now the EU will break apart but if they are as idiotic as they are, they deserve to.

Let's never lose sight of the fact that the mass migration into Europe from the Middle East and Africa is fundamentally different from the usual migrations. This time it seems to be a deliberate attempt to destroy the social harmony that exists (generally speaking) in European nations. It's a kind of spillover of the dislocation of societies in the source nations, resulting from the European beachhead in Palestine (that is, the Israeli invasion and occupation of Arab lands) and the Western governments' determination to re-write the map of the whole region by means of perpetual warfare.

The only viable African economy is Namibia. It's way off everyone's radar, low population, have avoided most of the pitfalls of other African banana republics. Have some friends in Mozambique they assure me they have their shit together. I'll give them benefit of the doubt, as far as that goes.

Did you see me claim differently? I critiqued some other commenter's breeding programs because I thought the selection criteria were faulty and would have side-effects.
I am smart and I am proud of it, but it doesn't mean I am genetically superior in any racial sense, it means my bloodline is staying ahead of the mean, the Flynn effect is possibly real and likely genetic and very likely therefore selected for, good food and medicine, and therefore intelligence and beauty are much more determined by genetics. So my parents chose well, nothing for me to be proud of. My son is smart too, which doesn't prevent your kid from being even smarter. I made a good move, you maybe have made better. Good for you, tell us how you did that.
And we have to remember that by far more genius-level brains come from people without educations than those educated, just because there are so very many more of them, and genes are mixed and there are alleles we would all like to have everywhere, if we only knew how to evaluate them. None of my grandparents got more than an 8th grade eduacation, my mother was the first on either side of our family to finish college, my father never did. I don't understand the whole 'pure genes' thing...Anyone who raises animals knows that purebreeds of any species are less robust than those who freely exchange their genes. And intraspecies purebreeds are a phenomenon that does NOT exist in Nature...they only exist with active human interventions. Genetic 'purity' is a completely human notion, artificial, and contrary to Nature's plan.
Purebreeds are for shows...silly little animals that couldn't survive without their human handlers. They pass on the genes for 'glossy coats' right along with the genes that make them too delicate for survival in the real world.
The best plan for a species that wants to thrive is to expand their genetic 'base'...drawing from a plethora of sources. That is why 'new blood' is so important...species that become to inbred amongst themselves rapidly lose their strength, eventually they just die out, become so fragile that it doesn't take much to wipe them out. The same thing happens to them that happened to the European royal houses...they cousin-fucked until they nearly exterminated themselves with hemophilia and other genetic disorders. They couldn't bear the thought of breeding with commoners and diluting that 'blue blood'...After many generations of this nonsense we have folks like Prince Charles. Hardly an example of humanity's best, more like "Don't let this happen to YOUR family!"
And the idea that by blending your genes, you somehow 'exterminate' yourself is total nonsense. In fact, you are insuring the survival of your genes...does anyone think those genes care WHO carries them forward? Geneticists search the world for new pools of genetics for every commercial species in order to find resistance to disease, drought, etc. Genetic variability is valuable.
Humans are very inbred relative to our ape relatives and ancestors. It is not intelligent to reject those sources of genetic variability.
What I don't get is exactly why anyone who is childless cares. You aren't passing anything on so to be quite direct you are out of this discussion. For others who value the leisure time and peacefullness that came from the wellspring of western civilization, let me suggest that you get to breeding, networking and finding common ground for your children will inherit your legacy.
Fact is western Europeans are responsible for over 80% of scientific, artistic, engineering and philosophical innovations that ALL cultures enjoy today.
