Abenomics Is Dead - Japanese Data Collapses Across The Board

Tyler Durden's picture

With recent JPY strength not helping, last week ended on a down-note for Japan as its jobless rate ticked up from 3.1% to 3.3% (the biggest rise since January) and Household spending collapsed. However, as the last week of the year begins, things have not improved as a double whammy of awfulness just hit the shores of Abe's nation with retail sales (worst since the tsunami) and industrial production ugly and missing across the board. We are sure, of course, that just one more dose of faith-based QE will fix this.

Household Spending has been a disaster...

And Retail Sales is therefore terrible... (away from the effects of the pre- and post-tax hike moves, this is the worst monthtly drop in Retail Sales since The 2011 Tsunami!!!)

And so Industrial Production is lagging...

So to summarize - with JPY strength amid carry unwinds, Kuroda worriedly stuck on the sidelines, and global economic collapse, Japan's Abenomics 'program' just created the following disaster trhee years later:

  • Household Spending plunges 2.9% YoY - worst since March (post-tax-hike)
  • Jobless Rate jumps to 3.3% (from 3.1%)
  • Industrial Production drops 1.0% MoM - worst in 3 months
  • Retail Trade tumbles 1.0% YoY - biggest drop since March (post-tax-hike)
  • Retail Sales plunges 2.5% MoM - Worst drop since Fukushima Tsunami (absent tax-hike)

But apart from that - everything is awesome.

Finally, in the interests of keeping things light over the holiday period, we note that when asked if this means trouble ahead for President Shinzo Abe, he allegedly replied "Depends."

It's just the transitory temporary weather induced radiation from Fuckushittinme.
Never fear, it'll all be cleared up in about 3 million years.
Gosh, and to think we got 2 wonderful Olympics coming up in Tokyo and Brazil.  Should be good for some shits and grins with Brian Williams reporting on the Tiddly Winks hurdle in an NBC suit.
.... maniacal laughter... get it, NBC suit ....

The Japanese must be truly grateful to Krugman for his wise counsel? Still, at least his Nobel Prize didn't result in the death of thousands. At least, not directly.

Not news. I never expected Abenomics to perform. Not all old recipes work in modern times.

Wow, the tax hikes appear to have had a more downward affect on consumer spending* than the tsunami did.  Could it be the "broken windows theory" is not true?

* retail sales combined with household spending

Unfortunately, the ruling imbociles in Japan will see to it that the next generation (these children) sleep in the streets and breath the toxic radioactive air of Fuckashima.

Here is my prediction as to what will happen to Abe once the Japanese hyperinflation and economic collapse comes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9AAnXo0F5c

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kw4noLIFgGQ

Perhaps he will be allowed to commit Hara-Kiri.

The madness of crowds should not be underestimated.  When a government body destroys the fabric of that society, anything is possible.   Surely the Fed will watch Japan's disasterous mistakes play out, and then they will also know the fate of the U.S. E-con-omy and their likely fate.

You're silly.  Japanese propaganda is as good or better than the US.  The conditioning was so professional, imbued with qualities like loyalty, honor, blah, blah, blah, that they had plenty of pilots willing to do kamakazi runs during WWII and/or jumped off of cliffs rather than be captured, etc, etc, etc.

Since then there has been an additional 70 years of brainwashing and conditioning.

I think you're naive to think that any leader is going to be executed.  It is just as unlikely to happen there as for our current traitor to be executed.  I would call it IMPOSSIBLE.  Perhaps in a parallel universe......maybe.

Pretty sure most intelligent people lost confidence in central economic planning a LONG time ago

Time to force academia to update their textbooks and admit what everyone without a PhD already knows.

I am shocked to learn that "free money" dispensed by economic central planners still doesn't work.

After 6000 years of trying, you might think they would at least fail in a less humiliating way; or maybe the most over-educated dingbats in the world (eg Krugman, Bernanke, etc) would realize that their ideas are not new or smart... but no.... we have to screw more taxpayers and brainwash more young people into worshiping the false idols of central planning

Abenomics was never intended to fix the economy. It was meant to create a positive feeling among the people so that the LDP could get enough power to change the no war clause in the constitution. That failed so they made up some BS about reinterperting the constitution to allow them to attack China for the benefit of their American masters. Japan is a great place but they lost the war and with it their independence. Nowadays more and more Japanese are annoyed by their imperial masters cause there are no longer any benifits to being a colony. In the future look for a militarized Japan back in the Pacific.

Sick and tired of the American masters theme.  What ZH needs is an ability to block the delusionists.  Every single ahole that says "Rothschild" would get an automatic block from me.  And in cases like the above plus a few more.
