ISIS Flees Ramadi, This Is What They Left Behind: Photo Album "From The Devil's Grasp"

Tyler Durden's picture

Last Tuesday, Iraqi troops made a concerted effort to retake Ramadi, which is around 60 miles west of Baghdad.

The city fell to Islamic State back in May when, according to Ash Carter’s assessment anyway, the army showed no will to fight in the face of the advancing ISIS hordes. Once the army, with the help of Sunni tribal fighters, retook a strategic command center they began to advance on a government complex where, according to sources, some 100 militants were dug in.

Despite sniper fire, suicide bombers, and IEDs the Iraqis were able to capture the government complex, marking the latest in a string of strategic and psychological victories for Baghdad’s much maligned forces.

Ramadi has been “fully liberated,” Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasool said on Monday. Here's the statement from the Joint Operations Command:

“Yes, Ramadi city has been liberated and security forces, like the heroes of the counter terrorism forces, flew the Iraqi flag over the government compound building in Anbar. The flag is flying now to write a new history, and with the grace of God, the rest of the cities will be liberated.”

As you can see from the map shown above however, merely retaking the government complex doesn’t mean the city is an “ISIS-free zone” (to use the ridiculous term the US and Turkey made up for the area north of Aleppo and West of the Euphrates in Syria). "Operations continued Monday to clear remaining Islamic State militants from other areas of Ramadi, security officials said, particularly in the eastern suburbs where many of the group’s holdouts had fled the day before as Iraqi forces advanced," WSJ notes.

“Gen. Ismail al-Mahlawi, head of military operations in Anbar, quickly clarified that government forces had only retaken a strategic government complex and that parts of the city remained under IS control,” AP writes, adding that although “IS fighters have retreated from about 70 percent of city, [they] still control the rest and government forces still don't fully control many of the districts from which the IS fighters have retreated.”

Right. And it’s unlikely that they’ll ever regain “full control” of the city where “ever” means sometime in the foreseeable future. There’s been talk of stationing the Sunni tribesmen in captured areas to ensure “the terrorists” don’t come back. Ramadi is Iraq’s Sunni heartland and thus Abadi isn’t keen on enlisting the assistance of Iran’s Shiite militias either to help with the fight or to occupy the city once it finally is fully liberated.

In short, Iraq doesn’t want the city to descend into sectarian violence in the wake of the ISIS withdrawal, but the Sunni fighters are undertrained and ill-equipped which leads one to question how effective they’ll ultimately be when it comes to defending captured ground.

In any event, here are some images which depict the aftermath of the latest fighting and should give you a good idea of what the Iraqis found when they entered the city which The Daily Mail says has been wrenched from the "Devil's grasp":

Source: AFP via DailyMail

So there you have it. A smoldering pile of rubble is 70% of the way "liberated." Hallelujah.

Don't forget that the scenes shown above are from a city that is just an hour by car from the capital of a country the US supposedly "saved" from a bleak future under a brutal dictator more than a decade ago. This, we suppose, is what a thriving democracy looks 12 years after a US intervention.

Next on the list is Mosul. In light of the following image which appeared in a piece of ISIS propaganda released earlier this year, we're interested to see what the city actually looks like now that the group has been in control for some 18 months...

Revolutionaries/Progressives are always happy to steamroller over and destroy the traditions and institutions of a culture, but when it comes to the work of building and creating a society, they reveal themselves for the tantruming children they are.

Oberlin graduates will reveal that, Canada is about to learn that with the election of an earnest patronizing progressive Prime Minister/school teacher they just elected.

It's a start, but weapons should not be transported more than 100 miles from their manufacture and, most importantly, gov'ts and private individuals cannot finance armies and private militias outside of their home countries.

International sanctions that were widely adhered to in the west worked well enough to bring down the apartheid gov't in South Africa.  They would have worked well enough to topple Saddam if the bastard French, Russians and Chinese had not been so keen for Iraqi oil.

Plus their boots are far too fucking clean.  You can tell a lot about a man and the state of his shoes.

Government cannot solve problems because GOVERNMENT IS THE PROBLEM and they are not about to take action to abolish the problems as that would have them take action to abolish themselves.

Exactly.  Just like any of the alphabet soup agencies like the DHS, CIA, DEA, or the ATF - if they were to actually accomplish their stated goal, they would have no reason for being - so - they are typically at the forefront of creating the "problems" they supposedly "fight" - it's just job security for them.  When things start slowing down, they throw a "fund raiser" event to shake more money out of the morons in Con-gress.

The correct statement is "government growth slowed down after the takeover of congress by Newt Grinrich led republicans in 1994.  As a result of forced ending of "welfare as we know it" to paraphrase Clinton's words when he signed the republican welfare reform bill which elimanted all cash welfare payments to able bodied adults.  Memory loss is just the start of dementia so don't worry too much-you've still got your height and your religious superstitions.

I wouldn't have a problem with the steam roller technique if it was employed to get rid of the cronyism rather than the small businesses.

Certain businesses become cronies when they give money to politicians who then take up legislation (often written by the same cronies) that helps to further entrench / solidify the crony relationship. They effectively employ $$ toward politicians to tighten the gate keeping efforts to keep others out.

Hard to tell from these pictures if thats the bridge over the TharThar canal, but I think it is based on another article I read saying the Iraqis built a ribbon bridge in that area.  It had a big hole in it from either Gulf War I or the 2003 invasion.  The superstructure of the brige was intact though, and was functional with the help of some military bridging.  Just saw an article dated to Jul 2014 that ISIS took out the rest of the bridge with a car bomb.  Originally it was a rail bridge but the trains stopped running a long time ago, sometime in Saddams reign.  Probably GW I put an end to it.

These aren't religious wars - they are american wars. The "evil" Saddam" ruled over the most modern and prosperous country in the middle east. Then, for the crime of selling oil in a currency other than the "dollar", the benevolent u.s. came to save Iraq and in the process sent the citizenry back to the stone age - literally. Part of this freedumb and democracy operation was a concerted effort to stoke religious fervor and annimosity amongst and between religious groups in the region. And now, with absolutely NOTHING left to live or work for, the population is either dead, disbanded, or warring. Those are the only 3 choices left to a country that has been liberated by the peace and freedumb loving u.s.

Exceptional.

How retarded and delusional is that?  No single country can take such a course of action.  It demands the action of a large coalition of countries, and therein lies the problem:  You just can not forge such a coalition, w/o word getting back to the NWO Neocons and them taking timely counter-measure.

Even Russian and Iran are having a tough time with it, because China keeps being the element of Drag to slow them down. (China pretends to be 'nice', but it's just a ploy to quietly and easily acquire everything of value in sight, while others are fighting).

I would rather be long dead than to be alive(conscious) and think opposite bad is good and good is evil & be successful in this world.

Isaiah 5:20 King James Version (KJV)

“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”

Cross References Matthew 6:22
"The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.

Matthew 6:23
But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

Luke 11:34
Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness.

Luke 11:35

If these people cannot man up in the middle east, why should we let them become refugees??

why is this myth persisting? most people in both Iraq and Syria are tribal. if they would arm and defend themselves, they would do that as a tribe

but in most cases, they can't. literally, all governments and other involved parties including ISIS try to do everything they can to prevent that, with exceptions being freely bombed by practically nearly everybody

so as a father of a 17-year old boy, your choice is to see your son getting forcefully drafted by one of any sides, all... unsavory. or to give him some of your last money, a smartphone and some directions to any place where he might survive this mess and so come back when peace returns

I would do the same. If you would not... then please explain how you would tackle this quandary

ISIS is smart to retreat from a "city" with no people, no utilities, no salvageable buildings...it will sink back into the sand without Uncle Sam coming in with $50b to rebuild for the people.   This strategy is a page right out of Sherman's march to the Ocean book.  The ISIS goal is to make sure the flow of refugees heading North is non-stop for the next 5 years...this will destroy the remaining economies of Europe and shortly thereafter the world.

The Late Chalmers Johnson has written a few books (Blowback and Sorrows of Empire, e.g.), on how the Anglo-'Murican Hegemony have pissed on and walked over many a Country on both Macro(Cultural/Political/Economic) and Micro (Personal) Levels.

The damages inflicted on the irreplaceable Cultural/Historical Location and Pieces in IRQ - the "Cradle of Modern Civilization" just had me shaking my head.

With all the Planning, One would expect a Cultured/Educated/Well-traveled/Cosmopolitan Diplomat, Military Officer, Staff Iraqi Liaison, Civil Engineer trained in Anthropology/Archaeology would be present in order to identify/spare/protect Cultural Assets and National Treasures (we did some of it in WWII) during - and especially after the Invasions.

Defacing Monuments while building Burger King and other Fast Food outlets for the Troops.  So simple to choose another location.

Add in Depleted Uranium Rounds related Deaths and Birth Defects, you have a Recipe for making many pissed off Survivors.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that the American Voting Citizenry should put a massive Monkey Wrench in the Neocon/Nuland/Brzezinski/MIC/PetroDollar Camps' Machinations of Conquest?

Any POTUS/VP Combo of Webb, Ron_Paul, Trump, Ventura, and Sanders might steer the USA out of another set of  MIC/PetroDollar/Neocon_Proxy Wars.  I wish Webb/Ron_Paul would be a Tix; but since I plan to be abroad, guess I'll just have to send in an Absentee Ballot.

The Iraqi army at the time in the (Sunni) north was lead by Shiite carpetbaggers from the south, selected for their crony contacts in the Iraqi government not their fighting abilities.  When ISIS appeared those "leaders", not wanting to be left to the mercy of the Sunni population in the north got out of there fast, at which point their troops, also mainly Shiites, decided the smart thing was also to hit the road.

It is Iran, whose army has some professionalism, that is now pushing the thrust into the north.  So they now occupy a few destroyed buildings.  But they are still Shiite invaders in Sunni territory.  A long guerilla war is guaranteed.
