Techno-Narcissism - Hard Questions & Ignored Answers

The really big item in last night’s 60-Minutes newsbreak was that the latest Star Wars movie passed the billion dollar profit gate a week after release. That says just about everything you need to know about our floundering society, including the state of the legacy news media.
The cherry on top last week was Elon Musk’s SpaceX company’s feat landing the first spent stage of its Falcon 9 rocket to be (theoretically) recycled and thus hugely lowering the cost of firing things into space. The media spooged all over itself on that one, since behind this feat stands Mr. Musk’s heroic quest to land humans on Mars. This culture has lost a lot in the past 40 years, but among the least recognized is the loss of its critical faculties. We’ve become a nation of six-year-olds.
News flash: we’re not going Mars. Notwithstanding the accolades for Ridley Scott’s neatly-rationalized fantasy, The Martian (based on Andy Weir’s novel), any human journey to the red planet would be a one-way trip. Anyway, all that begs the question: why are we so eager to journey to a dead planet with none of the elements necessary for human life when we can’t seem to manage human life on a planet superbly equipped to support us?
Answer: because we are lost in raptures of techno-narcissism. What do I mean by that? We’re convinced that all the unanticipated consequences of our brief techno-industrial orgy can be solved by… more and better technology! Notice that this narrative is being served up to a society now held hostage to the images on little screens, by skilled people who, more and more, act as though these screens have become the new dwelling place of reality. How psychotic is that?
All of this grandstanding about the glories of space goes on at the expense of paying attention to our troubles on this planet, including the existential question as to how badly we are fucking it up with burning the fossil fuels that power our techno-industrial activities. Personally, I don’t believe that any international accord will work to mitigate that quandary. But what will work, and what I fully expect, is a financial breakdown that will lead to a forced re-set of human endeavor at a lower scale of technological activity.
The additional question really is how much hardship will that transition entail and the answer is that there is plenty within our power to make that journey less harsh. But it would require dedication to clear goals and the hard work of altering all our current arrangements — and giving up these childish fantasy distractions about space and technology
Dreaming about rockets to Mars is easy compared to, say, transitioning our futureless Agri-Biz racket to other methods of agriculture that don’t destroy soils, water tables, ecosystems, and bodies. It’s easier than rearranging our lives on the landscape so we’re not hostage to motoring everywhere for everything. It’s easier than educating people to both think and develop real hands-on skills not dependent on complex machines and electric-powered devices.
But we’re not interested and that is why we’re going to be dragged kicking and screaming into a very different future, not riding rockets to the new mall on Mars. I’m not religious, but maybe there is something like Providence at work foisting all these space fantasies on us at the very end of the year, allowing us to get all this stupid shit out of the way so we can prepare for the banking and political tribulations to come in 2016.

I am mystified by all those who swoon over Elon Musk.
He builds expensive cars, unaffordable to 95% of working folks, but with this eco-friendly save-the-earth BS halo, and the press fawns all over him. There is nothing earth-shattering about Tesla cars. They're a trendy status symbol.
And about that re-usable rocket. Yes, it was impressive to see the Falcon 9 land on its tail. But NO, it wasn't the first re-usable space vehicle. We had that thirty years ago. It was called the space shuttle. But NASA became a bureaucratic bundle of folly, and hasn't built anything noteworthy since. It tells you more about America's demise than it does about technology.
We'll get to Mars eventually, just not in this go-around......

It's what we do, in other words, and we would have long ago reached this point — and done so with vastly less murder and mayhem — had the state not managed to shackle human society so completely. In fact, its relentless drive to control technology for its purposes, not ours, represents the greatest threat to our survival.

Had plans for chili and beef-stew but those were going to take hours to complete, so I hit a drive-thru. The first thing I noticed during my wait was the white SUV with 2 white males getting out. What really caught my attention was the red underwear against the white pants of the driver. Upon exiting the vehicle, he adjusted, not pulled-up, shifting his pants to only expose half of his red ass. From there, they both produced a Swagway Board from the back seats and began rolling across the parking lot. I am already confused because it is like 60 ft to the door. They instead rolled no more than 8 parking spaces to another white SUV with 2 black males, which were selling new clothing like boots and coats out of the back. Another young black couple purchased a purple coat while the two whites stood and rocked back and forth on their boards. One of them after viewing a few items, rolled back to his SUV, and then back.
I couldn't determine if the goods were stolen, nor do I care. It's very easy to buy cheap and sell for a profit if you know where to look. It is largely about how you spend your time trying to sell it. I just assumed it was a Craigslist sale. The part that really got me was that these guys just seemed to have given up on walking. It reminded me of the movie WALL-E, with the inhabitants of the spaceship existing with no gravity, getting larger with each generation.
These boards are pretty new, but expect to see a similar occurrence in your neighborhood.

In fact, one could argue that is is precisely the hard-ships associated with hard times that tend to 'focus the mind' in a manner not available during times of plenty.
That's completely true but incomplete: it ignores that any given field of research has a maximum number of ground-breaking advances to it, and that maximum is almost always zero e.g., magneto-oatmeal propulsion tech - I hope you didn't go all-in.
The agri issue is the biggie. That WAS the ground-breaking advancement. We squandered the breathing room that the Green Revolution provided, and used it to breed like abnormally dimwitted flies in a bucket of chicken brains.
Population is a taboo subject. That behavior has only one possible outcome. Look out the window.
Every previous episode in human history that developed "the most ground-breaking technological advancements" did so at times when the planet was still fresh and full of an abundance of natural resources. What any "ground-breaking technological advancements" have to cope with now is that the planet's natural resources have already been seriously strip-mined. We have already high-graded ourselves to hell. There are already just beginning to be the consequences of diminishing returns, as well as the accumulation of the garbage and pollution problems, becoming ways that the collective socialized losses are exceeding the previously privatized profits.
That the structure of human civilization was always based on being able to back up lies with violence is basic SOURCE the "Hard Questions" regarding "How psychotic is that?"

Kuntsler's world view appears to be too optimistic to me, while your criticism, Conseulo, deliberately ignores that the natural resources of the planet have been turned into garbage and pollution at an exponentially accelerating rate, which was facilitated by the total dominance of fundamentally fraudulent financial accounting systems.
The basic problem that civilization is controlled in every short to medium term increment by vicious spirals of POLITICAL FUNDING ENFORCING FRAUDS repeats in fractal patterns through every level of civilization. That society is actually controlled by being able to back up lies with violence, and that has been so for many, many generations, has enabled the development of psychological and political habits which are utterly morbid. The genuinely Hard Questions are how to operate the human murder systems after the development of weapons of mass destruction. In my view, not only do people tend to universally Ignore Answers to such Hard Questions, from a practical point of view, whatever theoretically possible better Answers there might be, those all appear to now be politically impossible to implement.
Any technology can ONLY operate as some entropic pump of environmental energy flows. While I believe that there are an abundance of theoretically possible creative alternatives, those can NOT be integrated into a coherent system without the death control systems as central to everything else. Indeed, the death controls were already always central to the debt controls, which was how and why we ended up with the currently established systems where governments enforce frauds by private banks.

All of the Hard Questions and Ignored Answers actually surround those issues of how to develop different death controls, after the exponentially increasing human population, based on strip-mining the natural planet, runs into increasingly serious limits manifesting as diminishing returns, and the accumulating consequences of the garbage and pollution problems. The almost infinitely Hard Questions are how do human systems change to adapt when all of their sociopolitical systems are dominated by the best available professional hypocrites? NO POSSIBLE SERIES OF TECHNOLOGICAL MIRACLES COULD EVER BE ENOUGH TO COPE WITH THE ISSUE THAT ENDLESS EXPONENTIAL GROWTH IS ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE.
Rather, by definition, what stops exponential growth are the development of death control systems. At the present time, that is being prepared to be done in the most criminally insane ways possible, due to the facts that civilization has become based on the excessive successfulness of being controlled by applications of the principles and methods of organized crime.
Theoretically speaking, we would have to approach the problems that civilization has as engineering problems, which were dealt with more scientifically. However, that is practically impossible due to the ways that warfare was the oldest form of social engineering, whose successfulness was based upon deceits and treacheries, which then became the basis for economic systems based upon enforcing frauds. We already do have death control systems, that back up the debt control systems, which control everything else. However, since those developed to become based on the maximum possible deceits and frauds, and those basic social facts are deliberately ignored and denied by the professional hypocrites that dominate all of the sociopolitical systems that are actually doing those systems, OF COURSE THE HARD QUESTIONS HAVE THEIR ANSWERS IGNORED!
The most reasonable things to expect will actually happen are that the covert plans of the ruling classes to miserably mass murder the majority of the human population will be carried through. The only genuine alternatives would be to develop better death control systems. Doing so would take a series of profound paradigm shifts in the ways that we perceive those death control systems, as the most important way that our technologically based civilization goes through series of intellectual scientific revolutions.
Relatively speaking, the alternative physical technologies are the easy stuff. What is way harder, indeed, it appears to be politically impossible at the present time, would be to develop better political technologies. Given that the existing murder systems are being operated through the maximum possible deceits and treacheries, while the existing monetary systems are being operated through the maximum possible enforcement of frauds, developing better combined money/murder systems only appears to be remotely possible.

Whatever the possible technological miracles there may well be, those are trivial compared to the political miracles which would have to surpass those, in order that those possible future technologies would not actually end up merely making the overall situation worse, instead of better.
NATURAL SELECTION PRESSURES HAVE DRIVEN ARTIFICIAL SELECTION SYSTEMS TO BECOME OPERATED THROUGH THE MAXIMUM POSSIBLE DECEITS AND FRAUDS, BY THE BEST AVAILABLE PROFESSIONAL HYPOCRITES.

Paradise or Oblivion, by the Venus Project, deliberately ignores the necessary matching Mars Project, as I explained in my reply above, and as is generally the case with respect to all considerations of Alternative Energies & Society Adapted to Them?
Political economy exists INSIDE human ecology. The superficial sorts of "solutions" promoted by the Venus Project deliberately ignore that none of that can actually work without addressing the Mars Project, which would be the alternative death control systems that would have to become the central core of any such possible alternative technologies, and the alternative life styles associated with those alternative technologies.
The current systems were based upon the actual history of warfare surrounding and deciding how the economy actually developed. Similarly, systems of legalized lies, backed by legalized violence, dominated the directions that the industrial revolutions actually developed in, or were not allowed to develop in.
I have watched lots of videos in the past from the Venus Project, as well as many other similar videos. However, I never like those kinds of titles which posit a dichotomy between Paradise or Oblivion. Rather, I prefer that view that what will actually happen is that we will muddle through the madness of changes in the dynamic equilibria between different systems of organized lies operating robberies.
No Venus Project is actually workable by itself. Rather, it will be conditioned by the realities of whatever the Mars Project becomes, in the sense that the death control systems will continue to be the keystone of any system of alternatives, or the lynch pin that holds together the components of those possible alternatives.
Ironically, groups like the Venus Project are more popular because they deliberately ignore the Mars Project issues. While people like to work on the nicer alternative technologies which are possible, they generally tend to dislike and deliberately ignore the much less nice, but nevertheless necessary, death control systems. Meanwhile, those who do spend a lot of time thinking about that operate within the history of militarism, as the ideology of the murder systems, whose social successfulness is based upon being secretive and dishonest regarding how they actually implement their real death control systems.
Tragically, groups like the Venus Project promote silly superficial "solutions" to the problem that money is based on measurements backed by murders. Their notions revolve around the day dream that we could sufficiently perfect our measurements that there would no longer be any need for murders. I REPEAT, the Venus Project deliberately ignores the Mars Project, in the sense that they provide nothing whatsoever in the way of proposals for how to operate better death control systems, and certainly nothing that goes through profound paradigm shifts in the ways that we perceive those death control systems, which would be what was most necessary in order to radically change how those death controls are done.
At the present time, we continue to cruise on the autopilot of MAD Money As Debt Systems, backed by MAD Mutual Assured Destruction systems, which have gotten, so far, sort of stuck in history. The MADNESS of those systems automatically gets worse, faster, every day ... However, the sheer MADNESS of that has, so far, contained itself through events like the phases of the "Cold War."
While Oblivion is quite possible, Paradise is not possible. At the present time, there is pretty well NO public recognition of the degree of runaway criminal insanities and overall collective MADNESS manifesting through the established systems of globalized electronic frauds, backed by the threat of force from atomic bombs. However, while a lot of the lower level solutions are presented by the Venus Project, the central core, keystone and lynch pin of the death control systems in general, and the murder systems in particular, are NOT treated in similar ways as the other problems are by the Venus Project kinds of groups usually do.
What would be necessary to have a truly "different path" is creative synthesis between the Venus Project and the Mars Project. However, by and large, the various different people in those different kinds of groups do not discuss the overall problems with each other, but rather, they tend to work inside of their own domains, while ignoring others.
As I stated in my reply above, the HARDEST QUESTIONS are how to operate the human murder systems after the development of weapons of mass destruction. So far, the only "solutions" are always escalating MADNESS, while that MADNESS has only developed within the life time of those still alive today. Indeed, there are Ignored Answers with respect to the Venus Project's bogus "solutions," since none of their ways of thinking about other issues are equally developed with respect to the death control issues.
As far as I now know, NOBODY makes videos for the Mars Project. Rather that information is all classified as top secret by the military groups that indulge in their own form of MADNESS. But nevertheless, to pretend to develop some kind of overall coherent Venus Project, without including the Mars Project, appears to me to have no intellectual integrity (although I admit that is generally far more popular.) The Mars Project is actually the world's primary project. However, the public presentation of that Mars Project projects the maximum possible dishonesty about itself.
The Venus Project WITHOUT the Mars Project is merely another presentation by reactionary revolutionaries, for idealistic mainstream morons, mostly promoting the same old-fashioned false fundamental dichotomies and related impossible ideals, which are merely souped up with partial attention paid to some possible aspects of the development of better science and technology, while continuing to deliberately ignore the basic human ecology, inside of which the political economy operates.
The central core to the human ecology was the history of warfare, as the Mars Project, with militarism being the ideology of that murder system. Of course, that is how and why our bullshit based kind of economics, controlled by public governments enforcing frauds by private banks, deliberately ignores human ecology, and therefore, for all practical purposes tends to deliberately ignore the relationships of evolving environmental ecologies to economic activities.
The Venus Project likes to promote sets of theoretically possible revolutions in the ways that the economy operated. However, nothing I have ever seen from them, nor any of the many other groups which are somewhat similar to them, ever directly admits and addresses the significance of the Mars Project. (Of course, that somewhat makes sense, after considering that the Mars Project is NOT popular, despite having historically been the single most significant thing which was done.)
So far, the Mars Project has actually been done in the most deceitful and treacherous ways possible. However, that does not mean that any idealized Venus Project has any intellectual integrity or credibility when promoting bogus "solutions" that are based upon deliberately ignoring the overwhelming significance of the Mars Project.

I am not going to bother detailing all the ways Family Law violates the due process provisions of all the governments assembled for the purpose, which ultimately rests upon expert testimony by government, as I already addressed those issues before the Supreme Court of the United States in 1999, and the Court has only become less relevant since. Without children, which government cannot produce, there is no economy for government, and all its income is debt, with falling living standards as the only possible outcome, because government, a contract made to be broken, produces nothing but make-work activity. Government is a brake, resisting change, until it can't.
You now find yourself in the wild, wild west of artificial intelligence programming. Who do you want writing the rules, and what do you want them to write?
Funny, the majority now has no input, and no one worth their weight in salt is going to respond to a $1B bounty managed by FANG. The majority has now voted itself the right to kidnap children and confiscate 100% of income, with an automated system, and its economy is imploding accordingly, taking legacy capital down with it, precisely because it's a closed system. The consuming majority doesn't just want to make the producing minority a physical prisoner to its own self-destructive behavior, but demands intellectual compliance as well, which is a problem-solution if you think about it.
The Law, governing the majority demanding equal rights, that all minorities must get in line, behind the majority, itself controlled by feudal behavior, is a hierarchy of monopolies implemented with arbitrary accounting rules written in even more irrational legal language. The majority is born into this artificial world with little hope of understanding the rules governing behavior, and so is left to replicate behavior in ever-growing derivative stupidity. All of this is easily replaced by a few lines of AI code to govern the gravity incline, and because dc programmers cannot reinvent the arbitrary wheel, and the system replicates itself like a cancer with best business practice, you can enter the code anywhere, to be copied and replicated in code libraries.
Who is going to shut down the dc-controlled energy grid first is anyone's guess, but you are better off being prepared. You are best off teaching your children that liberty is about taking responsibility for teaching themselves, rather than being paid in debt to avoid responsibility under the law, which is what government is all about, a majority of consumers attempting to hold a minority of producers in a state of extortion, to feed the legacy FILO bankruptcy queue from the top down, with increasing rent/income. All governments begin in moral bankruptcy, and depend entirely upon the one-way liquidation of natural resources for their existence, none of which has ever managed to exist in equilibrium with nature.
For those with some kind of programming experience, humans complying with arbitrary empire rules are nodes controlled across a dc credit network built for the purpose. As labor, you are the server, issuing gates ad hoc, minimizing time as an empire node in one of many dimensions. That ac multiplexer handles communication across the mirrors, with which you implicitly program the empire node assigned to you.
Humanity recognizes no predator, so it has created one with public healthcare selection, public education reinforcement, and war as media – civilized self-obsession. If we made the system widely transparent tomorrow, everyone in the middle class and capital would lose their jobs, labor would take over and become capital, and the stupidity would start all over again, with the same conclusion, History. The self-obsessed empire pays participants in their own debt to be self-obsessed, and the majority votes for it every time, becoming redundant, when it rotated out for another manufactured majority; the Internet is now just the new TV, only globally pervasive.
Born into this artificially linear world of gravity and its derivative time, most accept it as reality, which is then reflected in the physical development of their individual and collective neural networks, forever trapping them in the past, experiencing trauma after trauma due to the opportunity cost of ignoring everything they don't want to see, systematically shorting themselves into self-obsession. Some manage to think in multiple dimensions, eliminating time as a variable net, and some are caught in the middle, rebelling against a linear empire as the cause of outcomes, at least recognizing that trauma is not normal. Labor throws its children into the pool of this gravity at birth to trigger the instinct for survival, navigation in the space between black holes, which also provides propulsion, if they choose to put their brains to work instead of replicating the behavior they are shown, by communists bred for the purpose.
A community cannot raise a child, a commune destroys itself every time it tries, and the arm-chair majority is just silly enough to try, always with an actuarial ponzi that would make Bernie Madoff a saint in comparison. The majority in the economic multiplier, having never seen a bond for empire infrastructure it didn't like, is automating away their own jobs with each purchase they choose to make, complaining and doing nothing about the resulting income inequality, as they were bred to do, and Silicon Valley is making the process more efficient, globally. Does it get any dumber than that?
By the time you are served notice for non-compliance with State mythology, the State has already gathered its evidence against you, made judgment against you, and confiscated your life electronically, with a 98% conviction rate. Whether you see socialism, communism or fascism depends upon your level of compliance, and it's all called democracy. The AI code is simply a set of mirrors, functioning as an electrical c-clamp, employing gravity, a heaped stack, against itself.
You may rely upon the self-obsessed socialists to fashion fascism from capitalism due to the opportunity cost of destroying natural productivity. And if you wait in line for the procrastinating majority, they will print debt as money and assign it to you as a jobs program, until you are dead and gone, when they will make a jobs program out of that, while they train your child to comply with more of the same, to seek credit as a prize for compliance. The answer to those who talk and do nothing is to do and then say nothing, until it is far too late, when the central banks are trapped themselves.
Interesting. There's a wizard in there, but possibly trapped in the Hall of Mirrors himself. Unless being purposely obtuse. Momentarily though the image forms of human consciousness as scattered nodes interacting in Time, not far off from my guess towards True Reality. Still, we all require filters while wading amid the muck. Manifestation is a distorted reflection of the Ideal.
The real problem is critical thinking. People start "thinking" from a baseline that is never a true baseline. Case in point, the missing airliner. People will say well we know that the flight path is X. Well we don't know that. We've been told that it was on flight path X but flight path X is probably the 3rd or 4th flight path that we have been told the plane was on. That is just one small example.
First prove the airliner ever existed.Now who's assuming ?
Nothing more catastrophic than success for creatures and systems controlled by antifragility.
We will not go to mars. There is nothing there for us to us to make dealing with the gravity well worth it. That does not mean that we will not go to space, however. There are ample resources that we desperately need. And need will propel us, and the day will come when our heroes will not be those that die in order to kill other humans, but instead those that die in order to expand our reach. We are building up pressure in the pressure cooker so that we can explode out to get more resources. We have a new frontier, and the frontier is where humanity shines.
The only "resource" space has that's easier (cheaper) to access than those on Earth, is somewhere safe to dump our toxic shit so that it doesn't poison our life-support systems.
This whole narcissism thing has taken over the HR world. At first, technology was a way to help them to do their jobs better. Now its basically to the point where they refuse to do their jobs, instead thinking that the 'technology' can do everything for them. And when their resume retrieval systems can't spit out the good candidates (because good candidates refuse to waste their time on such black hole nonsense), they whine like babies and "think" that they need H-1B's to solve all of their problems.
As a result, the economy runs dramatically beneath its potential, and a lot of good people find themselves on the outside looking in.
HR has never been particularly efficient. They only hire people for it who are complete corporate clones without imagination; as a result they lack the ability to evaluate human beings for out-of-the-box potential. The resultant mediocrity is a feature, not a bug.
My personal little secret:
I have no TV and I have no cell phone.
Congratulations. I have a cell phone to do what a landline does due to the cost of landlines where I live and the occasional need for road repairs. I try to remember to charge and check it for messages every two or three days.
