UK Revolts Against "Pampered Student Emperors"

Tyler Durden's picture

While stories of micro-aggression and "safe spaces" abound in America, it appears the growth so-called "little emperors" throughout the world's universities is on the rise. As Harry Mount rages in the following Telegraph op-ed, the babies of the late 90s – mollycoddled by their parents, spoon-fed by their teachers, indulged by society – have now reached university and "It's time to say No to our pampered student emperors."

Via The Telegraph,

The little emperors have grown up. The babies of the late 90s – mollycoddled by their parents, spoon-fed by their teachers, indulged by society – have now reached university. Some of the brighter ones are now at Oxford, demanding that the Cecil Rhodes statue at Oriel should be torn down, because of his imperialist, racist views.

We shouldn’t be so surprised. If you’ve had a lifetime of people saying “yes” to you, of never being told off, you remain frozen in a permanent state of supersensitivity. I wasn’t offended by the Rhodes statue when I was at Oxford 20 years ago. But, even if I had been, I wouldn’t have thought my wounded feelings should be cured by tearing apart the delicate fabric of a beautiful university.

Universities are reaping the whirlwind of two decades of child-centred education. That whirlwind has imported imbecilic trigger warnings – when academics have to warn students that western European literature, from the Iliad on, is full of sex and violence. It has also brought the pernicious idea of “no-platforming” – when students refuse to give a stage to anyone who doesn’t fit with their narrow view of the world.

We shouldn’t blame the student emperors for all this. Their warped supersensitivity is the fault of the generation above – the teachers and parents who have so indulged them. I first noticed the disaster of child-centred education six years ago. Near my childhood home in north London, there is a late-Victorian school. According to the noticeboard outside, it didn’t have a headmaster. Instead, Mr MJ Chappel was called the “lead learner”.

The implication was clear. Mr Chappel wasn’t placed in authority above the children but was ranked alongside them. Children have as much to teach the teachers as the teachers have to teach them – an idiocy that’s difficult to attack because it sounds so charming; and because people like me sound so evil when we disagree.

That idiocy is now endemic through the primary, secondary and tertiary education sectors. I resigned from a provincial university lecturing job recently, when the disease struck my department. My colleague said it was my fault if the less clever, less hard-working undergraduates did worse in exams than their brighter, harder-working contemporaries. I was told not to penalise undergraduates for bad grammar or spelling mistakes. And I had to dumb down the exams.

The last straw was when I was told to cut down on facts in lectures. “You’re here to teach them how to think, not what to think,” the head of department told me. The tragedy was that the undergraduates weren’t little emperors. They were longing to learn facts, spelling and correct grammar but they had had precious little exposure to these things at school.

And so they sailed on serenely into the world of work, blissfully unaware that employers would throw their applications straight in the bin because of their bad English. I saw the final punishment for child-centred education a decade ago, when I worked on the Comment desk of the Telegraph. One of my jobs was to keep an eye on the interns.

Ntokozo Qwabe says that Cecil Rhodes "did not have a scholarship" because "it was never his money" in the first place

A charming bunch they were, too. What was astonishing, though, was how some of them took to having their grammar corrected. Because they’d never been told off about bad grammar at school or university, they logically assumed it didn’t matter; that I was some dreary old pedant, enforcing a code that died out some time in the Middle Ages.

I didn’t mind. It was no skin off my nose. But they should have minded – it was only the interns who either knew their grammar, or were chastened and informed by correction, who ended up getting jobs on the paper. Why should they have thought any differently? Throughout their education, they had been repeatedly encouraged to think their wounded feelings must trump the teacher’s, or employer’s, right to instruct.

The same applies to the row over Rhodes’s statue. The authorities at the university have, so far, continued to pamper the student emperors. Every time the authorities are accused of racism, they bend over backwards to soothe the offended egos of the little, tinpot dictators – rather than telling them that they, the teachers, are there to tell the students what to do; and not the other way round.

Well what Rhodes did for white man's burden I'm sure these students will do for mulitcultural freedom. One man/woman, every skin colour and similar human rights. Thats what that Lady E Roosevelt said in all our names.

Paradigm change that's a long time coming. But yes; the economic paradigm is still that of the Clintons and Bushes; aka of the Oligarchs. They have to fall along with CBR's statue.

After all they took down Stalin's....in 1989.

Whats wrong with change ?

I know whats wrong with resistance to change : its called asymmetric wars of status quo.

We don't see the Telegraph puking ire over the mollycoddling of the Kalachnikovs and other MIC toys for sale the world over; handed over free to ISIS to boot; and those bigger toys called Bombers. And the Pentagon/CIA bag of tricks in Cheltenhem...

Oh if only those mollycoddlers understood how dangerous the world is. Guess who made it thataway?

Maybe we should ask Murdoch  of Mordor !

Notice to the babies running Oxford (and every US college too):

If you think CUSTOMERS should pay you $70,000 per year (or GBP equiv) so you can pump their minds full of socialist bullcrap, then you had better get used to those same CUSTOMERS telling you how to decorate your business store front.

Are the kids acting mature? Not compared to students of yester-year. But compared to the Peter Pan crowd you hired as "professors", your CUSTOMERS have to deal with the reality of the cost of your fantasy world.

Childish professors and corrupt administrators taught these kids how to act like 3yr olds -- and now the colleges are getting payback.

Karma bitches!!!

Hard knocks are going to sort this generations' baby-man syndrome out, whether wanted or not.

Educators need to get out of the way.

This is life.  It is not sterile, or tidy.  And it doesn't conform to propagana-fed preconceptions.  It doesn't come with clear boogey men, and clear heroes.

Those are all value judgments based on a point of view.  The reality is that every perspective is morally mixed, at best.

But today's young can't understand that greatness and imperfection of necessity cohabitate. They can't understand that they've been fed only one point of view until they cannot imagine a different one.

Poor kids have been brainwashed and robbed in equal measure.

Reality can be foul-tasting medicine.  But medicine it is.  For those who want life over death there is no other way.

Reality, for those who've not acquired the taste, is a drink best sampled in small sips - like an especially potent liquor.

Too much, too soon, and the unlucky youth will be reeling from one disaster to another, and will be lucky to survive at all.

They learned to feel entitled by watching their deadbeat parents rack up trillions in debt, living far beyond their means.

If Bernanke and Yellen and Draghi and Lagarde and the G7 "leadership" can borrow without even the pretense of repayment, what lesson do they think they are teaching the next generation? Why work when you can just borrow and borrow and borrow, and stick future generations with the cost?

Pampered entitled parents have pampered entitled children.

Nowhere is this more true than in Sweden. Youth since age 4 has been schooled in their unique worth and their duty to go out an correct the crimes of their elders. This newly trained generation has been educated as superior beings. The new generation will correct the white man's failing in Sweden, and build a whole new multi cultural multi ethnic woman centric Sweden. These Open Borders babies will rip you a new asshole if you do not openly support mass migration from Africa and Middle East. You must give pride of place to transgenders and lesbians. Gay men also rank high in the new social order. Muslims, Blacks, Gays, Women, they should be given power, they should be state supported, and government should act as enforcer of Islamic and Homosexual rights everywhere.

The old white establishment, especially males, or white males, need to be suppressed and replaced by the paradise of government by women overseeing mass migration to make Sweden into the multiracial paradise.

He's conflating two things.  He's right on the grammar and the overall structure of being pampered, headmaster turning to lead learner, etc.  We've seen this a million times with participation trophies, and all sorts of softeners introduced into society.  No playgrounds, no tag, nothing that puts pressure on the individual to sink or swim.

He's wrong about Rhodes, who is the embodiment of the evil British Empire.  It's not the same as the Wilson statue.  Not even close.  Everything about the British Empire needs to be torn down, including America's current enslavement to its ideologies via Neoconservatism on the 'right' and the 'left' as well as bowing to Wall Street and European 'markets' on the 'right' and the 'left'.

Though in these troubled times, there are far more important things to protest then a statue.  What the students are getting wrong here and over there, is that they are bypassing all the real issues, for these small or even non-ones.

It seems the problem is, people don't know where to draw the lines, including himself.  He should be aiding them in protesting something far more pressing.  For instance their rights being taken away in the U.K., as well as their countries support for jihadists and the drug trade, and their Monarchy's depopulation scheme through Green Fascism.

Meanwhile he should be supporting on the back end as far less important, the removal of the statue.  Maybe if he and others had continued to point out the more pressing issues to protest, he wouldn't need to now fight back against them wanting to remove a statue.  The statue would come down in the wake of bigger victories that are far more important.  That's why prioritization is so important.  Every country has thousands of 'issues', but unless you win some in the top 5 or 10, you won't build a ground swell to sweep many of the other ones in.  Maybe they have such lowered expectations, they only feel they can take down a statue.  Maybe he should teach them how to aim for something higher?

The future is here, the people running things are morons, and they are now complaining their children are morons.  Even the ones who notice something is wrong, are indeed themselves getting it wrong. The rot goes back a lot further then one generation.

Recently a group of students lacking an officially recognized hyphen started a new fraternity at a Texas university.  As a fund raiser, they decided to hold a concert.  They chose a rapper as the entertainment.  Immediately they had a grievance filed against them by various campus African-American students (a prominent hyphenated group) for something called ‘cultural appropriation’.  They had committed a micro-aggression.  Apparently, such a heinous act puts in jeopardy the academic performance of the offended group. Biochemistry must be more difficult than I remember.

Frat members refused to apologize, so the university co-opted the mea culpa on their behalf.  Local media came calling for interviews and TV appearances, apparently to provide an avenue for hyphen-challenged frat boys to face the public shame many felt the members so richly deserved.

Is it possible that perhaps, just perhaps, we have moved into the parabolic final blow-off stage of political correctness?  Is this Peak PC?  Is micro-aggression the Synthetic CDO Squared of modern day social decorum?  I have a sneaking feeling Dem candidate Martin O’Malley (#AllLivesMatter), Don Imus, and The Donald would say they hope I am right, though the first two gents would only say it off the record.  Danger now apparently lies everywhere and with every word, like IEDs on the road to Ramadi.  Skin is thinner than on the face of a nipped-and-tucked Beverly Hills matron.

This got me to thinking.  George Orwell was only half right.  The ugly future, according to him, was going to come either from fascist right wingers or commies.  Instead it came from the pathologically politically correct.  We have groupthink and thought crime, in addition to newspeak.  We have forced contrition and mandatory re-education.  Those who refuse are executed, at least professionally.  We’re ALWAYS at war with Dead White Males.

Ironically, or perhaps not, this tolerance/perceived intolerance is a one way street.  New Washington Nationals’ (baseball) manager Dusty Baker can say “I think we need more speed, so we need to look at trading for more African-American and Latino players.”  Samuel L Jackson can say (about the San Bernardino massacre), “I was hoping it was some crazy white dude, ‘cause I don’t want a backlash against Moslems.”  Does anyone think Mark Wahlberg could have gotten away with saying, again about San Bernardino, “I was hoping it was some crazy ghetto banger, ‘cause I don’t want a backlash…etc.”  I don’t think so.  As for Dusty Baker, the name Al Campanis comes to mind.  Maybe Jimmy the Greek.

While mulling over the tale from the Texas fraternity, I saw a TV ad for a musical called The Wiz.  I’m sure you are all familiar with it.  The entire cast was black.  Since I seem to remember that the original Oz was written by Dead White Male Frank Baum, and the characters were dirt poor Midwestern lily white farmers, I felt I had been micro-aggressed.  I was filled with righteous indignation.  Am I allowed that, or is that restricted to the eternally hyphenated?

On the news the other evening CBS ran a story about a deliberately all African-American orchestra that played European classics.  Are not Mozart, Brahms, Beethoven and Handel the quintessential Dead White Males?  Again, I felt micro-aggressed.  MY culture is being appropriated.

Later in the evening I turned on TNT to catch a basketball game.  Dr. James Naismith?  Come on! I want the entire National Basketball Association shut down, because watching that game felt like a MACRO-aggression!

I want to fight back.  I want a remake of Shaft, albeit this time with Pee Wee Herman in the lead role.  I want Mandingo with Tobey Maguire, or maybe Richard Simmons.  I want Roots II to be about the Bush family’s arrival in America, probably on the Mayflower and not on something like the Armistad.  I even want William Shockley’s birthday to be made a national holiday, complete with sales everywhere from Home Depot to Harry Winston.  I’m willing to give up Colt 45 via a legislated appropriation, so I’m not without some cultural sensitivity (sorry Samuel; RIP).

If not that, then I want…nay, DEMAND…my own hyphen, and not one of those phoofy British ones like in Rhys-Davies or ffrench-Blake.  I want a real, honest-to-goodness one that immediately bestows victim status upon the user.

Hey Hey Ho Ho Micro-Aggression’s Got to Go!

How you lose your basic human right to control who and what you are.  Your very flesh.  Oh sure, the argument is that "you're done with it", and therefore absent some positive act anyone should be able to take whatever they want.

" Every time the authorities are accused of racism, they bend over backwards to soothe the offended egos of the little, tinpot dictators – rather than telling them that they, the teachers, are there to tell the students what to do; and not the other way round."

Who is leading Leftist Agenda?

Janet Napolitano is in charge of the California college system.

Professors are now told not to use certain words. Napolitano is not a 20 year old college student.  She was in the Obama Administration.

So who is leading Leftist Agenda? Trigger Warning was not thought up by some college freshman, nor was Micro Aggression.

"Mr Chappel wasn’t placed in authority above the children but was ranked alongside them. Children have as much to teach the teachers as the teachers have to teach them – an idiocy that’s difficult to attack because it sounds so charming; and because people like me sound so evil when we disagree."

It all comes back to Leftist Agenda.

"The little emperors have grown up. The babies of the late 90s – mollycoddled by their parents, spoon-fed by their teachers, indulged by society – have now reached university. Some of the brighter ones are now at Oxford, demanding that the Cecil Rhodes statue at Oriel should be torn down, because of his imperialist, racist views."

Demanding at who's direction?  Who is at the top?  Who is leading Leftist Agenda?

It is not about little emperors.  Who is the big emperor?  Who devised the plan? Who is the organizer?  Lemmings follow leaders.  Where are "the brighter ones at Oxford" getting their marching orders from?

As I alway say : Western education is breeding devils

Due to prevailing materialism,

the students are getting into the trap of living a life

where material pleasure is foremost

(because they think & were told that body is only flesh/material)

And so, they are into mind altering addictive drugs

and sex or both for pleasure

(both ways they destroy their spiritual content there)

Those who cant afford resort to paid sex

(& also those on student loans)

and also to extreme greed which sees no moral values in the path

Immorality abounds

Humans mind & brains becoming places of demons & devils

----------

In colleges (& in schools) its hard to find clean students

who dont abuse drugs , ITS SO RAMPANT

the tattoo thing is overdone now   ... they don't wash off ....

wait till your 30s folks, then you might be a little more reasonable on the temporary fondness for certain images ... try henna tattoos for a while first, see how they wear on you

look at how covered Bieber is now ... he's addicted to the ink ...

The school system based on the 19th century Austrian model, is primarily about indoctrination not education;read John Taylor Gatto (a former award winning  USA high school teacher) who left the indoctrination gulag complex in disgust.

Doubtless a lifetime of shelf stacking/burger flipping/unemployment against the backdrop of an increasingly crowded, violent world of collapsing nations, race wars and severe climate perturbations will knock the PC/Multi-Culti techno-dependancy bull shit right out of them!

no offense, but u sound like an old fart.

Grammar indeed does NOT matter anymore, bloggers and video-tubers make FAR MORE money than any old newspaper, and they don't get editted.  It's probably BECAUSE they don't get editted, that they make more money than sellout newspapers.

So the ones who didn't get hired at your newspaper?  They will become the rich successful ones.

Grammar is for old stuffy WASPy Thurston Howell III dooshbags, yo.
