Gun Sales Surge In Switzerland As Army Chief Warns "Arm Yourselves"

Tyler Durden's picture

It would appear the people of Switzerland have been listening to their military leaders. Having recently been warned by the Swiss army chief of growing social unrest, SwissInfo reports applications for gun permits in Switzerland increased by 20% between 2014 and 2015, according to a survey conducted in 12 cantons. But while the army proposes "arm yourselves," Swiss crime prevention officials warn against the false sense of security that guns bring.

Whereas in 2011 numerous people in Switzerland voluntarily gave up their firearms, today more and more people are purchasing guns.

Swiss army chief André Blattmann warned, "The threat of terror is rising, hybrid wars are being fought around the globe; the economic outlook is gloomy and the resulting migration flows of displaced persons and refugees have assumed unforeseen dimensions," adding that "Social unrest can not be ruled out."

He further recalled the situation around the two world wars in the last century and advised the people of Switzerland to arm themselves...

And, as SwissInfo reports, it appears they have...

Applications for gun permits in Switzerland increased by 20% between 2014 and 2015, according to a survey conducted in 12 cantons by Swiss public television, SRF.

The survey, published on Wednesday, showed that in the 12 (out of 26) cantons surveyed, the Swiss are increasingly interested in purchasing pistols, rifles and other firearms for private use.

The greatest increase – more than 70% – was measured in canton Vaud, with more than 4,200 applications in 2015, compared with 2,427 in 2014.

There is a general climate of uncertainty and an increased fear of intruders, said Pierre-Olivier Gaudard, head of crime prevention for canton Vaud.

But Martin Boess, director of Swiss crime prevention, warned against the false sense of security that guns bring.

“When there are more guns in circulation, there is a greater danger for society,” he said in an interview on the 10 vor 10 news programme. “That’s shown by experience in places like the United States. When there are more guns, there are more accidents with guns.”

In Switzerland, with more than 8 million inhabitants, there are about 2.5 million legal weapons, around half of which are used for Swiss military service.

*  *  *

And while the Swiss go about their legal business of arming themselves, President Obama is preparing to unleash another weapon - the executive order - to enact gun-control legislation.

Facing stiff resistance to gun-control legislation in Congress, Mr. Obama has signaled that he plans to act on his own. The president has directed administration officials to explore any steps he could take on guns without lawmakers’ help, and he said in his weekly address that he would sit down with Ms. Lynch on Monday “to discuss our options.”

“I get too many letters from parents, and teachers, and kids to sit around and do nothing,” Mr. Obama said in the address, which was released Friday morning.

Gun-control advocates who are familiar with the White House’s plans say Mr. Obama could lay out multiple executive actions as soon as next week, and administration officials have confirmed that recommendations for the president are nearing completion.

White House spokesman Eric Schultz said Mr. Obama asked his team to “scrub existing legal authorities” and assess actions that could be taken administratively.

Free-dom indeed.

My impression is that Andre Blattman is a very responsible person, and he is NOT trying to feed a wave of hysteria.  He faces the difficult problem for HOW to prepare his country ... if the rest of Europe plunges into some type of economic (and social turmoil).  Blattman's problem is magnified by the fact that his own Government is NOT increasing his defense budget.  His budget is actually shrinking.

Blattman's recommendation is very logical.  If the citizens of Switzerland buy more small arms and ammunition, then the Swiss Army can focus on bigger issues ... they can use their limited budget to buy large-scale equipment that they need.  This is a very sensible step for a small country. Effectively, some of the Defense Budget gets transferred to household budgets.

Americans see this issue in a different light ... and the topic feeds a lot of homegrown paranoia.  It doesn't appear that Americans have much confidence in their own Government to solve critical problems.  On the other hand, Swiss citizens have a different impression of their Government.

But the Swiss Government will also have big problems if many of their citizens "lose the plot" and start following their own defense strategies - different from their training.  In order for the defense of their country to be effective, the citizens have to remember the training they got in the Army and follow the overall Plan.  Blattman's suggestions are a gamble ... it all depends on how the people react to the situation.

Same problems faced by a neighborhood militia, slightly bigger scale.

If you are trained as part of a ground-up response, which is historically (or at least was) the case in Switzerland, then I don't think you'd see those problems. Little support system necessary.   A top-down response, as in the US, guarantees failure in the event the support system for the response (ie, society as it is) fails.  And that top-heavy response will in itself cause support-system collapse, as it did in the USSR and is currently doing in the USSA.

So does this mean that all the police and military should put down their guns, because it gives them a false sense of security as well.

It's a fact that the war propogandists don't talk about much, but military historians do, that the weapons which are of the most immediate danger most of the time on the modern battlefield are the ones in the hands of one's comrades. Since cover and concealment with fire and movement replaced bright uniforms and standing volley fire, casualties from so-called friendly fire have been a lot more prevelant than it is in the military's interest to admit.

In society at large, yes there are going to be more accidents with guns and firearm suicides and gun crimes if guns are more prevalent in society than if they are less prevelant. But the first is an individual responsibility that is a function of training and awareness in safe gun handling, while the second is a not a function of the means, but of whatever gun, bottle of pills, or high bridge is handy, and the third is a function of the dark side of human nature that an armed and law-abiding citizenry (see John Lott's More Guns, Less Crime) along with functional policing and courts can more than keep a lid on.

The con that Obongo and the gun grabber types are trying to palm off is that they can usher in a perfect world via their dumb-assed laws and regulations, gun control being but one for-instance. Bullshit. Life's a bitch and then you die. Get over it.

Yes, society pays a price for the individual's right to keep and bear arms. It also pays a price for the mobility that automobiles lend, in the tens of thousands of lives. Don't let anybody pull your leg, Liberty has a price. But it's the world's greatest bargain compared to the price of Tyranny.

Better add a zero (or two) to those numbers.  Medical screwups are hugely under-reported, and under-recognized for that matter.

It's worth reflecting on that every medicine we use is a poison.  It is, or should be, totally unsurprising that a lot of people get killed and maimed from taking them.

The last time a Prez tried something similar was Slick Wilie, with his attempt to run around the Constitution via Exec Order. It would have essentially nullified the States as political entities, gilding the lily, so to speak. When the Republicans heard of it, they sent up a  major row and it was stopped. But the bastards keep trying.

What is happening in europe...will happen in America too.

It is a world-wide Woar on Evil and this same evil is coming to America, or worse, is already here waiting for barry's orders to commit murder and mayhem so he can declare martial law, and lock down of America. You good People in Europe need to take off your panty lace and kick these evil criminals OUT of your countries. The American People need to do the same thing.

One thing is for sure, just because barry is the greatest gun salesman for the gun companies owned by bush etc, and just because it does not matter how many guns people in America have because you plan on using chemicals, bio-weapons and nukes on them making guns irrelevant in your evil scam to destroy America by setting her up for a fall in a world woar, doe not necessarily mean you will succeed in your evil run amok world-wide.

Dear evil...there is NO ESCAPE from the Universal Karmic Justice that is coming to you soon...like right after you babylonian crazies fire the first shot in the coming world revolution and rapid vicious elimination of ALL evil, world-wide.

It's simple really.  The more threats there are of gun control and the more threats there are of Obama further violating the Constitution by bypassing Congress to illegally enact his gun legislation, the more we need our guns.

President Obama is preparing to unleash another weapon - the executive order - to enact gun-control legislation.

Congress needs to prepare a congressional order (a law) to "reinforce" the ban on executive orders included in the USA Constitution.

The states have an opportunity to fix this problem thru an Article V Convention of States at which they could decide that they may no longer need a President and Congress in the Capitol to act as their "AGENT".  Amendments to the Constitution under an Article V could be as extensive as one to terminate the three branches of the Federal government and return ALL powers of governence to the individual states.

However, states are dragging their feet in a call for a Convention.

For those who truly want to use the "nuclear" option to change D.C. from the outside, call or meet with your state legislators and strongly encourage them to get this done ASAP.  There should be absolutely nothing on the legislative dockets that have a higher priority than fixing the disaster that Washington, D.C. has become, either thru dramatic reductions to their power or by Constitutionally terminating their existence.

If someone told you that the Gub'mint had plans to kill you, you might be tempted to laugh.

That is, until you learn about OPERATION NORTHWOODS. Or about the deliberate exposures of Americans, without their knowledge or consent, to airborne pathogens in subway tunnels or released off-shore from Naval vessels. Or the deliberate exposure of Americans, without their consent or knowledge, to dangerous radio-isotopes released downwind from nuke plants. Or dosing habitues of brothels with LSD. All covered under Project MK-ULTRA, thanks to Nazi scientists imported to the US under Operation PAPERCLIP.

Trust a government that wants to disarm you when it had plans on the books to kill you...and probably has killed lots of people we will never know about. Trust that kind of government. Riiiiiiight.

I used to have a term for Obama, the "runaway President".  It seems when he unilaterally does crazy, unconstitutional things with like executive orders or executive memos or whatever he then hops on Air Force 1 and isn't around for the blowback.  Since generally the American people have a short attention span and are easily "distracted" in the stealing or their rights and liberties by the latest hollywood story, we soon forget his transgressions which then are incorporated into the "law of the land" upon his again unquestioned return.  This is quite simple and has worked well for him in many areas since he was elected.  If you like advancement of the Progressive Agenda then you love Obama.  He has a ton of "travel" scheduled so expect his fundamental changing program to come on, one executive order after another as his response to any serious questions will be non-existent as he boards the old Presidential plane with vacuous trips around the world waving goodbye.  He is waving goodbye to the undermining of your freedoms.  He excells at this.
