It has been a bloody year in Baltimore, that much everyone knows, but as The Economist shows, something changed dramatically after Freddie Gray's death in April...
On November 14th the police department reported the city’s 300th homicide in 2015, a total not seen since 1999.
The surge in killings in the majority-black city of roughly 623,000 began after the death on April 19th of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who was fatally injured while in police custody. Since Mr Gray’s death the city has recorded 244 homicides, a 78% increase over the same period in 2014, representing more than 100 additional deaths.
Criminologists and city officials disagree as to the causes:
- Some say police have deliberately pulled back from poor, black neighbourhoods, a theory that the police disputes.
- Others blame an influx of drugs from pharmacies looted during the April riots.
- A third theory is that a decline in trust between the police and the policed has had deadly consequences: fewer residents talk to the police, which leads to fewer murders being solved, which - by lowering the odds of being caught - results in more murders.
Whatever the reason, the killing continues. Just hours after the 300th murder, police reported a shooting in the city’s Westport neighbourhood, the fourth homicide of the day. The total for the year now stands at 305.

It will take a huge turnover in the PD before this is forgotten - and it may never be forgotten, particulary with the policy of matching more experienced (older and more agrieved) cops with younger cops for training purposes. The older guys will "train" the younger guys and let them know what happened. Complete F up all around.
The probe is on now that Freddie's dead. Cops are reporting actual deaths again instead of sliding the reports under the empty donut boxes. Policically driven increase in filing reports.

If anything, it are privileged whites who tend to have an overly simplistic view of such issues, as we typically have not an inkling of what it's like to live under institutionalized discrimination, which can range from subtle (i.e.: "the black tax") to not-so-subtle (i.e.: overt racism).
It's to the point where one can safely ignore the viewpoints of upper middle class whites on these issues altogether, as they are misinformed and ignorant about them, let alone about the ramifications that they have for people of color.

Eirik, I've read some of your posts before and just rolled my eyes; but there are several egregious errors in your premeses here to which I feel compelled to respond.
First, the statement that blacks are acting out as a result of living under 100s of years of institutional racism, and its corollary, that the black crime rate is high because of the memory of slavery sins committed by whites, is not grounded.
If memory of slavery sins caused shootings and robberies among the descendents of the slaves (ie. blacks), then we would have seen much higher crime rates 100 years ago, when this "institutional racism" were more fresh on people's minds, and some of the (now unacceptable) racially targeted legislation (ie. Jim Crow laws) was still active. But this was not the case.
Second, the belief that only blacks were slaves in Western Europe and North America is falls into the Big Lie category. Estimates suggest that 1/2 to 2/3 of all white people who came to the New World came as slaves. White children used to be "spirited away" (this is where that term originates) by slavers looking for fodder for the mills. White slaves were, by and large, free, and therefore expendable, and were frequently worked literally to death. Black slaves cost more money, and were generally better treated, especially in the Southern US States, which were dominated by Christian men, who, when they did own slaves (and fewer than 10% of them did) they generally followed the Biblical guidance against treating one's slaves harshly. Northerners didn't share these sensibilities, and worked their slaves into the ground. Interestingly, there are cases documented in court-houses of free blacks owning white slaves. In one of our history's great ironies, it is remembered by a large portion of our society that only blacks were slaves, and only in the South. Understanding that whis was not the case, that whites were slaves too, should give the reader some perspective when listening to nonsense about black crime rates being related to slavery, cruelty, and oppression that took place over 6 generations ago. Since that time, blacks in the West have been given opportunities to succeed that have been denied to them in every other place and time in history; and they are still failing.
Third, an issue no one wants to talk about in the race war is the impact on IQ. Murray and Herrenstein tackled the central issue in their book The Bell Curve, and were subjected to public excoriation for doing so. Blacks have collective IQs that are one full standard deviation below those of most other ethnic groups. This, more than any other factor, leads to type of societal problems we hear about in black communities that simply don't exist (or exist only marginally) in other communities. Why this is so is the subject of another debate. But that it is so has been thoroughly proved by analysis of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. Socioeconomic status has little to no impact on whether or not a person will be successful in life or end up in prison. Little to no impact. Claims that the plight of blacks may be blamed on white racist oppression are not grounded in reality. In reality, a person's genetic makeup is the single greates determining factor of his future success, whether he grew up in the ghetto or in opulence.
In short, there's absolutely no reason for any white person to feel ashamed for his ancestors' treatment of blacks. Western Civilization ended slavery - we didn't start it. And the idea that whites today "owe" something to blacks as a result of 100s of years of institutionalized racism is insultingly uninformed.
