Google Is Collecting Information On Public School Students – Here's How

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

As a new parent, the idea of sending my children to public school is a frightening thought. The more you read, the more you realize the importance of extreme vigilance when it comes to what’s happening at whatever place you send your kids to for majority of their day. Quite often, parents are simply left completely in the dark about some very important matters.

One such example relates to Google’s penetration of the U.S. public school system, and how the company employs a loophole in order to collect data on children. Google achieves this by referring to itself as a “school official” under the law. I truly wish I was making this up.

From the Washington Post:

Google is a major player in U.S. education. In fact, in many public schools around the country, it’s technically a “school official.” And that designation means parents may not get a chance to opt out of having information about their children shared with the online advertising giant.

The combined allure of Google’s free suite of productivity tools and cheap laptops that use the company’s Web-based ChromeOS operating system have made Google’s products a popular choice at schools around the country. And the company’s growing dominance is raising concern from some privacy advocates who allege it is using some student data for its own benefit.

Google’s standard agreement for providing its education suite defines the company as a “school official” for the purpose of that student privacy law. In Google’s case, the company is providing software that districts might otherwise have to develop or support themselves, such as email services or tools that help students digitally collaborate on assignments.

But schools are supposed to have “direct control” of how a company or individual uses and maintains education records to deem them a “school official,” according to the department’s regulation. Khaliah Barnes, an associate director at the Electronic Privacy Information Center or EPIC, argues that isn’t happening with many ed tech providers, including Google.

“The schools don’t have access to Google’s servers or a lot of the way that it uses the information because it is proprietary,” she said. In 2012, EPIC brought a lawsuit against the Education Department in an attempt to stop the government from interpreting the law in ways it argued could allow schools to share more data about students with less explicit consent, but the case was later dismissed on standing grounds.

Why am I not surprised in the least.

Today, Google and many other tech companies are increasingly part of students’ daily classroom lives under the “school official” designation. And that leaves parents in the dark about who has access to an increasingly large cache of information about their children and may compromise their privacy down the line, experts say. But as previously reported, Google said it has “always been firmly committed to keeping student information private and secure.”

Private and secure, ok, but they are still collecting this data aren’t they? They are still essentially tracking the activity of little children without their consent or parental consent, are they not?

Even 20 years ago, parents really didn’t expect schools to track more than basic information about their children’s school performance — things like attendance and test scores. But the latest generation of educational tech products are cataloging a nearly limitless amount of data on what students do everyday — from emails and chats, to metadata, such as location history, that educators may not even realize is being collected, Barnes said.

“The companies themselves aren’t transparent, and often times schools even aren’t aware of the extent of data collection,” Barnes said.

“School districts are just generally not providing notice to parents,” said Reidenberg.

You’ve been warned.

What if David Icke is right, that the secret rulers who really control giant corporations like those in FANG are lizard beings.  Icke was right about the UK being run by a protected upper class of pedophile degenerates and murderers.  So, why not have corporations actually run by real aliens hiding behind the human equivalents of Judas goats?  Maybe that is why Obama is so gung ho to take away Americans' guns.  Maybe his secret organ grinder is a real alien, a being from another galaxy.  Only time will tell. Then again, it could just be the same old degenerates in the New World Order who run things.

Seriously, if you are to raise a child in this day and age, sending your kid to public schools is about the worst thing you can do. Everyone knows that raising a child requires sacrifice, and the foremost, right after making sure they are eating well, is with whom you entrust their minds. For some reason a government-run, unionized workforce of leftists atheists does not strike me as what would fall under the category of "good choice". Having my child taught at any rate other than his or her own is unfair to my kid. Having my child taught that exceptionalism is a punishab;e offense is also problematic for me.

Look, I get it that these choices are hard, but failing to get your kid into either a pivate school or a home-school environment is failing your kid. Cowboy up.

Compulsory public schools were set up and run by foundation money $$$ like the Rockefellers, NOT "unionized lefty aetheists," who may be among the dumb-asses who now populate it.  John Taylor Gatto has documented it very well in his books.

Otherwise, yes, public schools are poison and designed to hold people down.

We spent 200k sending two kids to private school k-12. Clearly this was meant as a deterrent for most families. Can't have too many not swallowing the official party line.

Though I am very pleased with the quality of education my kids received, if I had to do it over again I would have chosen homeschooling. Even the State admitted there was only 10-15 minutes per hour of " education" in a public school classroom, the rest was administration, dealing with problem student disruptions etc. Hell, had I known that, I could have worked full time and still covered all the required material.

Well yes... private school is out of the question for anyone not firmly esconsed in the upper third of the middle class. The preponderance of single parents these days doesn't help the cause of homeschooling either. I'm a single man in my  40s raising two young daughters, and yes I homeschool. But it's not as easy as you think, and if I was working a regular job it would be impossible.

I spent similar sums back in the 90's and early 2k's, Miffed. And yes, given my druthers I would have home-schooled as well, though I have no complaint with the education my two received. But it also meant that we drove older cars, didn't have all the new fancy gizmos and didn't dine out a lot. The upside was that we sat down for dinner TOGETHER every night. The kids had limited internet time, (monitered), and limited TV time.

Minions of Satan include humans as well as demons. We have nil to blame but ourselves in scattering in dissension rather than being believers of the Almighty and He alone, Creator of all and to be united.

Om a happier note, God can truly see all - intentions let alone actions - and the deeds of the evil will be accounted for.

If I were to take your fairy tales as reality then upon logical examination I would have to side with Satan.

What is Satan's big sin? That he thought of himself equal to Yahweh.

There are no other bad deads caused by Satan.

Yahweh on the other hand has demanded that his followers sacrifice their children and their animals.

Has caused numerous deaths with floods, plaques, famine and pests.

Destroyed a city and killed everyone within it, simply becasue the people there enjoyed themselves too much for his liking.

Yahweh sounds like a complete asshole. Given the choice I will take Satan.

Any validated evidence of the existence of the supernatural world would be the story of the millennium.  Everything would stop and people would stand still in wonder.  Hasn't happened yet.

This would be the equivalent of contact with extraterrestrials.  That hasn't happened yet either.

Until I see it on every headline on every newsplace on the planet, it hasn't happened...

Jesus had you pegged. Luke 16:

27 But the rich man said, “Abraham, then please send Lazarus to my father’s home. 28 Let him warn my five brothers, so they won’t come to this horrible place.”

29 Abraham answered, “Your brothers can read what Moses and the prophets[f] wrote. They should pay attention to that.”

30 Then the rich man said, “No, that’s not enough! If only someone from the dead would go to them, they would listen and turn to God.”

31 So Abraham said, “If they won’t pay attention to Moses and the prophets, they won’t listen even to someone who comes back from the dead.”

OT, but Japan just came out with a gourgeous robot that cooks, cleans and "makes love"! Of course it's a cool 345K at the present time but in a few years, who knows. Potentially affordable for the average guy. I spent a lot more than that on my last ex and she didn't really cook or clean. This "could" be the holy grail for those guys who don't need hours of rambling conversation and can't cook or clean worth a shit. I wonder if they can really cook gourmet type meals or not? If the techies surmount that issue, I'm buying one!

Skateboarder,

Using the cloud is a choice. If not the kid, the parent can set it right.

A few Gbyte mobil memory is a cheap and simple solution if the kid has so precious data to save.

Which I doubt.

Right now (unless I missed something) there is no choice but to use a tablet with an OS from one of the evil 3 (Apple, Microsoft, Google).

There are Android open source versions... but are they really de-Googled???
