US Responds To North Korean Nuke Test, Flies B-52 Over South Korea

Tyler Durden's picture

On Tuesday, North Korea announced it had “successfully” tested a hydrogen bomb.

According to Kim Jong-Un, the test was necessary because America is “a gang of cruel robbers” hell bent on waging nuclear war. “This is a self-defensive step for reliably defending the peace on the Korean Peninsula and regional security from the danger of nuclear war caused by the U.S.-led imperialists,” Kim said.

Subsequently, experts weighed in, noting that based on the device’s yield, it likely wasn’t a “true” H-bomb. Nevertheless, analysts said the test showed the North’s nuclear program is evolving, a decidedly unwelcome prospect for Washington’s ally in Seoul.

In a hilariously absurd retaliatory measure, the South resumed anti-Pyongyang propaganda broadcasts across the DMZ.

Adding insult to injury, the loudspeakers were fired back up on Kim’s birthday.

That prompted the North to declare that the peninsula is “on the brink of war.” Now, for the second time in six months, tensions between Seoul and Pyongyang have reached a fever pitch.

And so, just as The Pentagon was "forced" to send a warship and a B-52 to the Spratlys to deter Chinese "aggression", the US conducted a B-52 flight in South Korea on Sunday.

"The bomber, which can carry nuclear weapons, flew over the Osan Air Base about 45 miles south of the inter-Korean border around midday local time, the U.S. military said," WSJ writes, adding that "the B-52, based in Guam, was joined by American and South Korean fighter planes before returning home."

“This was a demonstration of the ironclad U.S. commitment to our allies in South Korea, in Japan, and to the defense of the American homeland,” Adm. Harry B. Harris Jr., commander of the U.S. Pacific Command said. Here are a series of amusing tweets from Pacific Command's official Twitter account:

Kim didn't immediately respond to the show of force, but as The Journal dryly notes, the North "typically calls such action evidence of the U.S.’s intention to invade."

Obviously, Washington has no interest in "invading" the North, but the US is quite adept at making a bad situation worse, and sure enough, Yonhap is out reporting that Ash Carter may deploy a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to the Korean peninsula next month for joint naval "exercises" with Seoul, a move which is sure to infuriate Pyongyang.

In reality, the most effective way to counter Kim would likely be to simply ignore him. Responding to the North's sabre rattling effectively legitimizes Kim's threats and sends a message to the North Korean people that the regime actually has some shred of international credibility. In short, it's critical for Kim to perpetuate a narrative that revolves around a kind of epic, ongoing struggle between the DPRK and America. The US plays into that when Washington does things like fly B-52s near Kim's borders. As soon as North Koreans figure out it's all a charade, the music will stop for Kim.

Speaking of planes… Here’s an interesting development in Iraq:

“An Air Force MQ-1 Predator remotely piloted aircraft crashed in central Iraq at approximately 12:50pm local time, Jan 7, 2016,” US Air Forces Central Command said in a statement. “The aircraft was flying a combat mission when positive control of the aircraft was lost… The remotely piloted aircraft crash was not due to enemy fire”.

But here’s what both, CENTCOM and the Russians don’t say:

Predator, meet Krasukha. Krasukha, this is Predator. ;-)

The 1RL257 or Krasukha-4 is intended to neutralize Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) spy satellites, ground-based radars and airborne radars (AWACS) at ranges between 150 to 300 kilometers. Krasukha-4 has been described as a tool against “flying radars,” such as the USAF E-8 Joint STARS aircraft, or reconnaissance satellites - like the United States’ Lacrosse satellite - and a means of protection against surveillance and combat unmanned aerial vehicles, otherwise known as drones.

Which B-52 was it?

Fred, Kate, Keith or Cindy?

Maybe they'll have more luck than Dennis Rodman.

[Hope they were playing "Love Shack" as they bombed Kim's worker's paradise...]

Can anyone make a case to me that we are NOT being set up for WWIII in the coming years?  US vs. Russia/China, becaause everytime I see this kind of crap all I want to do is go work on my bunker, and get ready for a war that's prbably coming in the 2020s.   I will be much happier if you could convince me I'm wrong.

It’s probably good to make sure it’s relatively slow, too.

That stunt was not done to impress anyone running North Korea.

I wonder how many different SAM signals the EW operator in that thing picked up.

Anyone else find the "demonstrations" tiresome? Everybody knows the '52 exists and can carry cruise missiles.

Nothing new.

How does flying a bomber older than the pilots' fathers demostrare "ironclad" anything? Who's is surprised, amazed, or frightened by this? What's the point?

I find it embarrassing, frankly.

I think the point is a single B52, as stated, a half-century old technology, is all that would be needed for a backwater shithole like North Korea. There can't be more than a half dozen worthwhile targets in the whole country. No need for a ICBM or lazers from space, a simple B52 payload is more than double what it would take to ruin the whole country.

There are no "lazers" from space, you moron ! The Earth atmosphere is a perfect shield against that (will dissipate the power of the beam to harmless levels). Sorry, but reality is not always compatible with the James Bond BS. That being said, US couldn't fly a better target than a B-52. That old crate with it's 8 old engines could be picked by the dumbesr radar from at least a hundred miles away. Any, and I mean ANY, SA missile would shoot it down with no effort. The Chinese and the Koreans must me laughing their asses off seing our "deterence"...

More intended as a message to the South Koreans and Japanese than the NORKs. It's just a big blob on the Norks' radar - one that they can see isn't actually coming close to the border. But it's big and loud on the South side.

I wouldn't say embarrassing so much as just more saber-rattling. The B-52 isn't a weapon that's coming into anyone's airspace which is protected by a defense system from the 1970s unless they want it there. The B-52 is a flying dump truck now (as others have said - just a cruise missle platform). So flying it anywhere near the border is not what it would be doing if things were serious.

Probably a rookie US pilot on a routine training flight.  Little fuel and no armed weapons.

But nobody is talking about how Bill Clinton took care of NK's nuke program by sending Bill Richardson, former governor of New Mexico over there to negotiate a settlement of food and medicine from the US in exchange for NK dropping it's nuke program.  Blame Clinton.

No need. The B52 can launch enough cruise missiles from hundreds of miles away from North Korea and ruin the entire country.

I'm surprised they bothered flying that close... well, I guess they felt they needed to do something stupid....

LOL..... I dont know ANYONE that sells $30 grams in Oregon!  That being said, i hate to "harsh your buzz" (love how some people like keeping other people in a box, maintaining stereotypes) but $10 a gram is a great RETAIL price here for high quality INDOOR GROWN meds .... $5 is a great RETAIL price  for outdoor/greenhouse grown flower.

Coming from someone that has his pulse on this market I can say that because marijuana is now legal for anyone over 21 years old in this state, marijuana is MOVING off the shelves in Oregon as fast as it is coming in.... and as with all commodities (that dont have future contracts or manipulated by central planners.....yet) is subject to the economic law of supply and demand..... and the price of pot in oregon is actually INCREASING here, not decreasing.....FYI!
