US Responds To North Korean Nuke Test, Flies B-52 Over South Korea

Tyler Durden's picture

On Tuesday, North Korea announced it had “successfully” tested a hydrogen bomb.

According to Kim Jong-Un, the test was necessary because America is “a gang of cruel robbers” hell bent on waging nuclear war. “This is a self-defensive step for reliably defending the peace on the Korean Peninsula and regional security from the danger of nuclear war caused by the U.S.-led imperialists,” Kim said.

Subsequently, experts weighed in, noting that based on the device’s yield, it likely wasn’t a “true” H-bomb. Nevertheless, analysts said the test showed the North’s nuclear program is evolving, a decidedly unwelcome prospect for Washington’s ally in Seoul.

In a hilariously absurd retaliatory measure, the South resumed anti-Pyongyang propaganda broadcasts across the DMZ.

Adding insult to injury, the loudspeakers were fired back up on Kim’s birthday.

That prompted the North to declare that the peninsula is “on the brink of war.” Now, for the second time in six months, tensions between Seoul and Pyongyang have reached a fever pitch.

And so, just as The Pentagon was "forced" to send a warship and a B-52 to the Spratlys to deter Chinese "aggression", the US conducted a B-52 flight in South Korea on Sunday.

"The bomber, which can carry nuclear weapons, flew over the Osan Air Base about 45 miles south of the inter-Korean border around midday local time, the U.S. military said," WSJ writes, adding that "the B-52, based in Guam, was joined by American and South Korean fighter planes before returning home."

“This was a demonstration of the ironclad U.S. commitment to our allies in South Korea, in Japan, and to the defense of the American homeland,” Adm. Harry B. Harris Jr., commander of the U.S. Pacific Command said. Here are a series of amusing tweets from Pacific Command's official Twitter account:

Kim didn't immediately respond to the show of force, but as The Journal dryly notes, the North "typically calls such action evidence of the U.S.’s intention to invade."

Obviously, Washington has no interest in "invading" the North, but the US is quite adept at making a bad situation worse, and sure enough, Yonhap is out reporting that Ash Carter may deploy a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to the Korean peninsula next month for joint naval "exercises" with Seoul, a move which is sure to infuriate Pyongyang.

In reality, the most effective way to counter Kim would likely be to simply ignore him. Responding to the North's sabre rattling effectively legitimizes Kim's threats and sends a message to the North Korean people that the regime actually has some shred of international credibility. In short, it's critical for Kim to perpetuate a narrative that revolves around a kind of epic, ongoing struggle between the DPRK and America. The US plays into that when Washington does things like fly B-52s near Kim's borders. As soon as North Koreans figure out it's all a charade, the music will stop for Kim.

That bomber is expected to be almost 100 years old when withdrawn WG. If you carry stealth missiles with very long range and very long standoff capability, you can deliver them with almost anything. The USAF just happens to still have a high flying bomber with a lot of air frame life left, that can do it. If it were designed as a penetrator, yes, it would be useless, and suicidal to use it that way (and it was originally a penetrator). But as a protected heavy very long-range in air refuellable V-LO cruise missile carrier, it's almost perfect.  And those old air frames are a fair bit younger than the original 1952 era versions, most of which had their wing spars destroyed in the early 1990s under strategic arms reduction agreements. They are just doing a little sabre rattling here, to remind them of what would happen.

Yet another load of aussie BS... There is not "a lot of airframe life left" in any of the 78 B-52s still in service, as the "youngest" planes are over 50 years old. It just so happens that USAF has no better replacement for the old crates... There are also no stealth missiles out there, as the whole concept of "stealth" is incompatible with the high speed any missile develops during its flight... You're talking up your ass... again.

I notice you russian state-trolls are busy up and down this thread actively supporting pudge-boy, Mr. 'MONK27'? What's the matter, are you getting a bit worried about Russia's Far East?

Newsflash, the B-52s wouldn't need to use a single nuke to smash the north, conventional cruise weapon capabilities would more than suffice.

At least the Chinese are a bit more realistic in their enlightening excuse-making last week, where Beijing said they couldn't do much to pressure the north, because of deep fears that it may cause the DPRK to completely collapse if they do.

So it's not like pudge-boy is fooling anyone with the ludicrous shows of 'strength'. Moscow and Beijing are both clearly worried about how weak and fragile the north is. And also that just maybe the South has had enough this time and will actually go to war, no matter what virulent threats that idiot in Pyongyang makes.  ;-)

_____

JASSM, JASSM-ER and LRASM are all currently integrated on the US bomber fleet, all are very low observable stealth cruise missiles, and all are subsonic missiles (and those are just the ones you know about). The B-52s are planned to be staying in service for another 45 years to about 2060, so there's clearly plenty of airframe life left in them, dumb-dumb.  :D

monk27's picture

Whatever floats your boat, dude ! But a but few non-stealth, subsonic cruise missiles are not scaring anybody out there. Keep droning though, you're kind of funny with your nonsense. Another thing, planing to fly the old crates for another 40 years doesn't make them any better, just waay more expensive...

So now they do exist huh? Now the missiles are not high speed. Now there is air frame life. But ... but .. you seemed so sure!

But you still want to pretend radar and Thermal very low observability do not matter huh? Still in denial to the bitter end with that one? Yeah, well, good luck with that response fool.

This will ramp up tensions with China:

US, South Korea discuss deploying “strategic weapons”

By Ben McGrath
8 January 2016

Following North Korea’s fourth nuclear test on Wednesday, the US and South Korea are reportedly discussing, at the highest levels, the deployment of “strategic assets” to the Korean Peninsula. The stationing of nuclear weapons and associated delivery systems would be a major escalation of the US military build-up in Asia, which is directed primarily against China, not North Korea.

Voice of America also reported that the US and South Korea had ordered their military forces on the Korean Peninsula on “high alert.” Almost 25,000 US troops are in South Korea, according to Defense Department data, plus about 3,200 Defense Department civilian employees.

While ostensibly directed against North Korea, these measures cannot be explained as a reaction to that regime’s primitive efforts to acquire nuclear weapons, any use of which would be suicidal, given Washington’s immense nuclear arsenal.

Rather than the supposed “rogue state” in Pyongyang, the real global aggressor is the United States, which has been engaged in predatory military interventions for decades, and the primary target of the current moves is China, which is being increasingly encircled militarily and strategically by the US “pivot to Asia.”

Turkey pretends to be fighting ISIS, as a cover for attacking the Kurds. Saudi Arabia pretends to be fighting Yemen, but is really at war with Iran by proxy.

The U.S. pretends to be "containing" North Korea, but is really building up its Asian forces to use against China.

The madness continues.

NK has more than a million men with AK's, they can quickly march to the capital of SK with guns blazing... what is it, 30 km away? Take them a few hours. Along the way they can use SK weapons against them as they advance.
Then what? US will nuke civilians in NK, nuke SK and NK at the same time? US to do landings in NK with a few hundred soldiers? not likely
The 26,000 US troops in SK would be overrun by the advancing NK army.
Kim can have a great victory... All because of US imbeciles

Those million Nokes have to wait until the world's largest artillery barrage is over; that is the real sword hanging over the South, not a nuke. But once Seoul is a smoking hole every square inch of land from the border north becomes a huge conventional weapons test range. What an opportunity to "use by sell date". The North is too close to China to nuke but I bet they would stay out of the ass kicking for a chance to observe Western weapons and tactics.

Sounds cool until you realize that about a million people will have died in an hour from the pounding of Seoul by the biggest collection of massed artillery the world has ever known.

I'm thinking that Kid Kim is savvy enought to listen to the generals telling him to wait until the the US finally gets a carrier or two Silkwormed or Sunburned by somebody else. Then it'll be time to go ho' shopping south of the former border.

I totally agree that to set up a huge lo-fi loudspeaker system obviously manifesting high inter-harmonic distortion and poor bass performance on one's border is tantamount to a declaration of war. That type of behaviour is certainly prohibited under our local town ordnances, and to do it on such a scale is reprehensive. Had it been a Quad or JBL system would be a different matter.
