In Latest Escalation, Oregon Militia Tears Down Government Fence, Demands Freedom For Ranchers

Tyler Durden's picture

Last week, Ammon Bundy met Harney County Sheriff David Ward on the side of Lava Bed Road near Highway 78.

Ward was attempting to negotiate a peaceful end to the protracted standoff that began two Saturdays ago when Bundy and a handful of armed militiamen “seized” a remote bird sanctuary in Oregon.

Bundy and his followers decided to occupy the federal building as a show of solidarity with Dwight Hammond and his son Steven who were sent back to jail last week in connection with fires they set back in 2001 and 2006.

Bundy’s militia - who now call themselves the “Citizens for Constitutional Freedom” - say they are standing up for state’s rights in a kind of ad hoc, haphazard rekindling of the Sagebrush Rebellion.

Following the meeting with Ward, Bundy said he felt like the group’s demands were being ignored. The Sheriff agreed. "I don't feel like they think they're getting enough attention yet," Ward remarked.

Subsequently, armed members of the Pacific Patriots Network showed up at the refuge before being asked to leave by Bundy. That visit prompted a meeting between the group and the FBI.

Now, in the latest escalation, Bundy is tearing down a government fence and replacing it with a gate in a move the group says will give local ranchers access to federal land. Here's the incredibly dramatic footage:

Earlier today, Bundy insisted that the men will not be leaving the federal building until the Hammonds are set free.

So, there you have it. The first federal property has been destroyed and Bundy has doubled down on the Hammond freedom demands.

Perhaps this latest publicity stunt will prompt authorities to end the 10-day siege although we imagine Bundy will soon be forced to do something a bit more dramatic if he wants to recapture the interest of an American public whose attention span is two days at best.

Let's be more specific for the people who won't follow the link and read past the headline:  The Harney County Sheriff is a FED.  An ex-BLM FED to be exact. And specifically, exactly, the former BLM "range specialist" involved in the set-up of the Hammonds.

That is quite a story and quite an affidavit.

Very interesting that the BLM cancelled the grazing rights the Hammonds had on the neighboring property and got a preferential right to purchase their ranch, in case they had to sell it to pay the $400,000 fine (for no damage), if the Hammonds didn't pay it.

Cha-ching!  Follow the money!!

They have chosen a very poor strategic and tactical location. It has no strategic value, and is actually irrelevant. Makes me think that all the want to do is martyr themselves. Hopefully the gov won't give them that.

As far as the constitution, read article 1

The Congress shall have Power To ...provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions....

ARTICLE I, SECTION 8, CLAUSE 15

Right now the congress could call up the militia to put them down.

“Armed members of the Pacific Patriots Network showed up at the refuge before being asked to leave by Bundy.”

Well, that’s a plus.

The first thing Bundy has to worry about is the possibility that provocateurs, sent by FBI or some other law-enforcement agency, will attempt to join him and then do their best to provoke animosity between Bundy and locals or provoke some form of violence.  Either of which would blacken the image of rights/powers mentioned/reserved by the First Amendment, in which Americans have substantial powers available to them – and which they don’t have a clue about.

A First-Amendment assembly, for example, is the historical means by which men exercise their sovereignty – for good or for evil.

Today, men of evil use such assemblies (as groups of private men) to capture governments and perpetrate genocides and general plunder; while men of reason and justice stand around and bray at the wind; that’s all the later can do owing to their ignorance.

The Hammonds are locked in a steel cage (for the second time on the same charge) and called terrorists. This is for a non-destructive wildfire that went a bit farther than it should have - what-15 years ago?! And the fire does more good than harm, it's part of the natural ecosystem. Much more wildlife is found on the maintained ranch lands. This is very close to the ultimate injustice and is yet another form of torture. I'm glad these guys are publicising it.

Mon, 01/11/2016 - 22:10 | 7033064 slyder wood

Total bullshit. Range biologists and similar science diciplines determine range health and will prescribe fire or close allotments until the range regains health. Remember, the Grazing Act was enacted because ranchers devastated the American West rangelands, they are not "stewards of the land" but rather exploitive business people on the public dole. The HAmmond son, a low-life poacher, started one of the fires to cover up deer poaching. If land needs to be burned because of invasive species it's mostly likely been overgrazed. Once the blue gramma goes and broom, sage, and creosote take over it's almost impossible to recover. The fact that grazed trampled land doesn't hold soil moisture just adds to the problem. Any rancher worth their salt will tell you the rangelands are stressed and there's very little nutrition in what's there to maintain herd levels seen before. The Feds know this and are trying to maintain rangelands. The first step is to get cows out of the riparian and let moisture conditions stablilize. That's why wetlands, streams and canyons are being closed off. Drive thru the more remote rangeland and look where the cows will be, along canyons and stream beds.

Also, you're theory on fire is not quite right. Before overgrazing grass fires were plentiful and natural. The grass grew, dried out, was ignited by lightning, burned undergrowth and invasive species, fire-scarred old growth and returned nutrients. The massive grazing that has gone on for over 100 years has upset that balance.

Finally, there's some articles by St Clair that cover the Hammonds history with the local Feds, seems it's been going on for nearly 10 years, including physical threats to local BLM employees. The reason they were brought up on terrorism charges was because of Earth Lib Front and Earth First. The Feds wanted to make sure they could extract max punishment for these militant environmental groups. The Hammonds got caught up in that but thought they were an exception.

WELL ... let's see if there are ANY positives here ...

1.  I would say that this incident did put the spotlight on the Hammonds.  And the Hammonds did get a raw deal with their 2nd sentencing, IMO.

2.  This incident has elevated the concerns about ranchers' rights ... and there are a lot of honest hard-working ranchers in Oregon.  So I think that this incident did help Americans to see their point of view.  Or we could say, it helped those Americans who are actually paying any attention.

BUT LET'S BE HONEST.  Real ranchers are out there today - looking after their cattle.  And they are paying honest money for their grazing fees.  The real answers to the problems of the ranchers are NOT going to come from the Stage Show being conducted by the Bundy's.  The BLM probably does need to look at how they make decisions.  More importantly. the entire Futures Markets of America (where meat is priced) need to be given an overhaul, so they produce realistic prices (not swayed by huge flows of money coming from cheap loans provided by the Fed).  Every farmer in America knows the headaches associated with the Futures Markets.

The Bundy's have put themselves on a collision course with bloodshed.  That seems to be their goal.

The local Sheriff offered them a great deal ... to LEAVE Oregon in Peace.  The Feds have been remarkably restrained - they have made a REAL effort to masintain peace.  It is pretty obvious that the Feds could hammer Maltheur if they wanted to.  They have chosen to preserve human life.

Do the Bundy's realize - THEY are the catalyst for a Bad Outcome here.

A bad outcome seems guaranteed ... if the Bundy's don't get a lick of common sense very soon.

so, when the government says they can leave peacefully, the same government that did double jeopardy and broke every law in the book with not only the hammonds but many others, , say you can leave, would you trust them?  What world do you live in?

The only reason the government has not destroyed these guys with drones and etc is because they cant...if they could they would...not from lack of firepower, but public perception...And if the protesters leave peacefully, they will be abducted per the patriot act a month later...These people, if real, either need to win, or they die...

Theres an old saying ... dont mistake patience for weakness.  The Feds have been very patient with this issue at Maltheur.  I've got NO idea what they are doing behind the scenes.  But I''m prepared to bet you that they are a lot more active with their preparations - than you give them credit for.

I said before - I think that the Hammonds got a raw deal.  But the Bundy's could have made that point by using a completely peaceful protest - and still got tons of media attention.  They never tried.

Where do these prison sentences come from?  Many times these excessive MINIMUM SENTENCES actually came from regular Americans.  Republican legislators came into office and said "we gota' get tough on crime".  The people bought the story hook line and sinker, and many minimum sentences were increased to be very harsh.  It was the public that approved a lot of this stuff.  The first Judge in the Hammonds case tried to overturn the minimum sentence.  But later,  a different prosecutor enforced it.

It wasn't necessary to grab a rifle to help the Hammonds and it still isn't now.

Lets also remember there's a LOT of money involved. The Bundys were squatting on federal land with their cattle and not paying grazing fees. Now they owe this money and they pull some stupid stunt as a technique to get out of paying -- and all these dumbasses roll up there with AR15s to unwittingly help the Bundys in their bid to not pay their debts... Dumb and dumberest...

Other ranchers all over this country pay to keep their livestock on federal land. The Bundys think they are special. They think god speaks directly to them. No shit. They REALLY think god speaks to them directly -- or its part of their schtick ...

well it can  own the land under the buildings it owns, but it shouldn't emulate the British royalty that we supposedly overthrew.   And the land should have been sold off long ago to the ranchers while retaining ownership of the minearal rights, which could have subsequently been sold off bit by bit

Oregon had a clear night last night, something I havnt seen for awhile.  So many stars, I kinda forgot what they looked like..I hear they are millions of miles away, some are 100 times bigger the earth, and I hear they die over time...I guess they burn out, which kinda reminds me of,  well, ME :-)   I guess when God said "let there be light", He wasnt messing around :-)

I dont understand the problem here...Some people go out to peacefully protest the corrupt BLM, judges and prosecutors.. If they are psyop, then so what? THey will either go home or all be killed. But I am glad this was brought to my attention. The real story here is how corrupt the BLM, and judges and prosecutors are.  Hammonds getting a 5 year sentence?  Double jeopardy?  If I were the hammonds, I would be glad that someone is exposing what has been done to me..psyop or not, whether the militia is controlled or not,  much information has come from this. If this militia is fake, will it hurt the real militia?  The real militia sure isnt doing anything anyway, so I dont understand.  Do it thru legal court system instead of with guns?  Oh yeah, that will work, think of peter schiffs dad.. If this militia is fake, then the real militai should go in and prove it. Where is the real militia?  nowhere except small websites preaching to the choir.

Protesting is great.  How many people do you think get an unjust sentence from the courts every year like the Hammonds did?  I'd guess tens of millions of people get screwed by the courts every year.  Not counting the ones who get gunned down by the cops without even a trial.  So fuck yeah we should all protest unfair treatment.  But usually protestors aren't armed.  That could be a problem, if every time someone protested they were carrying guns.  Probably lots of crazy shit would happen, dead people all the time including plenty of innocent ones.  America would be like a war zone.  And now these guys are destroying property too, I don't see what separates them from your typical thug/vandal protestor besides their color.

"Hey pardner, Jim Johnson here. I'd be with ya'll out there in Oregone xcepttin I'm here with the little lady and our 14 kids back here in Boonsville Iowa. Ya'll know I lost my job because Obama closed down our local ammunition factory so I'm agonna wait it out here. PROBLEM? Good ol Jim is actually Vladimir Dipschtsky in Moscow PRETENDING to be a "patriot". Vlad there wants our man Bundy to go out there and act like a moron -- then get his ass shot off by the feds so that hopefully they (Vlad et al) can create an American civil war.

Don't believe this? Look at twhat one of the Bundy boys wrote.

“I feel quite betrayed. It’s been on Facebook that everyone is going to come. And we show up, and everyone just craps out,” he said. “You come up here, ready to get killed if we have to and these people are just on Facebook about it.

And here are the Russian trolls duping these "patriot" idiots into getting their asses blown off by the Feds

Based in St. Petersburg, the agency was staffed predominately by young people, many of whom were unable to find jobs elsewhere, Savchuk said.

They were given targets such as President Obama, Europe or Ukraine, and ordered to celebrate two characters: Putin and his defense minister Sergey Shoygu.

"Most of them do the work unconsciously and write what they're dictated," she said, "If tomorrow they're told to praise Obama and hate Putin, they will do so."

The trolls were paid between 40,000 and 50,000 rubles (about $750) per month. Savchuk said she donated her pay to charity.
