In Latest Escalation, Oregon Militia Tears Down Government Fence, Demands Freedom For Ranchers
Last week, Ammon Bundy met Harney County Sheriff David Ward on the side of Lava Bed Road near Highway 78.
Ward was attempting to negotiate a peaceful end to the protracted standoff that began two Saturdays ago when Bundy and a handful of armed militiamen “seized” a remote bird sanctuary in Oregon.
Bundy and his followers decided to occupy the federal building as a show of solidarity with Dwight Hammond and his son Steven who were sent back to jail last week in connection with fires they set back in 2001 and 2006.
Bundy’s militia - who now call themselves the “Citizens for Constitutional Freedom” - say they are standing up for state’s rights in a kind of ad hoc, haphazard rekindling of the Sagebrush Rebellion.
Following the meeting with Ward, Bundy said he felt like the group’s demands were being ignored. The Sheriff agreed. "I don't feel like they think they're getting enough attention yet," Ward remarked.
Subsequently, armed members of the Pacific Patriots Network showed up at the refuge before being asked to leave by Bundy. That visit prompted a meeting between the group and the FBI.
Now, in the latest escalation, Bundy is tearing down a government fence and replacing it with a gate in a move the group says will give local ranchers access to federal land. Here's the incredibly dramatic footage:

So, there you have it. The first federal property has been destroyed and Bundy has doubled down on the Hammond freedom demands.
Perhaps this latest publicity stunt will prompt authorities to end the 10-day siege although we imagine Bundy will soon be forced to do something a bit more dramatic if he wants to recapture the interest of an American public whose attention span is two days at best.

Malheur Wildlife Refuge is one of my favorites, I would shoot every steer I saw on my hikes there, between the eyes, they would make good feed for cougars, coyotes, ravens, eagles, etc.
I would send in tactical teams with orders to kill ALL of these primitives, then I would confiscate their lands and add them to the wildlife refuge.
USA needs good habitat for pronghorn antelope, mule deer, elk, etc a lot more than it needs a few more cattle from a handful of primitives fantasizing about the old west and being cowboys, not to mention religious cult worshipers.

About 5 hours ago there was an incident in MA. that elicited quite a response. There was absolutely no news coverage whatsoever which was very unusual. I have never seen so much equipment respond in my lifetime. It was nearby and again the media silence was deafening.

The American Civil Liberties Union's recent report on the militarization of American police based on a review of 800 SWAT team deployments showed almost 80 percent were for a search a person's home, rather than for response to a violent incident or threat. More than 60 percent of the searches involved drugs, according to the report.
Critics also cite instances in Massachusetts where such tactics appear to have backfired.
After police in Springfield implemented tactics similar to those used by U.S. troops in Afghanistan to combat local gangs, said the ACLU's Rossman, the murder rate actually increased.
In 2011, a drug raid on a Framingham apartment by that town's SWAT team resulted in the death of a 68-year-old man who was accidentally shot when an officer tripped, discharging his rifle. The victim was not the person sought by police.
Besides such horrors, over-use of armored cars and SWAT teams tends to undermine the cooperation between police and local residents needed to combat crime and disorder, said Jack McDevitt, author and associate dean at Northeastern University's Institute on Race and Justice.
"There are legitimate instances you need those elements, but they're very, very few," he said. "There's a very real risk that you erode the trust that exists between the community and police, and end up with an us-versus-them mentality."
Transparency is another area that threatens law enforcement credibility, McDevitt says.
Regional Massachusetts law enforcement councils which provide SWAT teams and other resources to local communities recently have come under fire for being unnecessarily secretive.
The Massachusetts chapter of the ACLU recently sued the North Eastern Massachusets Law Enforcement Council after it and five sister organizations, including MetroLEC, refused to provide public records. The councils argued that they are private entities and not subject to state public records laws.
