Markets In Freefall: Stocks Extend Worst Ever Start To Year

Tyler Durden's picture

Today's business media summarized...

Today's actual market summarized...

Let's start with this - The market has now reduced March rate-hike odds back to pre-December rate-hike levels (at just 35%)...

Two words - Policy... Error...

This remains the worst start to a year... ever...

Across the major US equity markets, it's a bloodbath...

*RUSSELL 2000 CAPS 22% DROP FROM JUNE RECORD, ENTERS BEAR MARKET

With the Nasdaq about to be the lasty major index to give up its post-QE3 gains...

Year to Date - it's just as ugly...

And since The Fed hiked rates...

VIX term structure inverted but we are a long way from an August-like panic-bottom...

There is at least some rationality resumiong as weak balance sheet stocks underperform strong balance sheet firms...

With selling out of the gate and only a small bounce in the last hour, equity markets carnaged...

FANGs entered a correction...

And FANTAsy stocks were smashed today...

Lots of head-scratching at how this is possible... except for anyone who pays attention to credit markets...

As HYG plunges to its lowest close since July 2009... Today was worst day in 4 weeks

US Energy credit risk is soaring back to near 2008 crisis highs...

h/t @JavierBlas2

While High yield bonds were crashing, Treasuries were aggressively bid (despite the Inbev issuance), on the verge of flash-crashing a few times after a stronmg 10Y auction...

The USDollar Index ended the day unchanged as early strength was sold - but it remains up on the week... CAD was smashed to new 12 yeasr lows

Gold ansd Silver rallied as Crude and Copper crumbled...

As stocks plunged at the US open so PMs ripped...

As if by magic, WTI's NYMEX close was adjusted very slightly higher to enable a tiny green print... but the trend was clear...

Charts: Bloomberg

Bonus Chart: Some food for thought...

Barry said everything was great last night, couldn't be better other than having republicrats and democrats work together.
No mention that he doubled the deficit and lost 230,000 manufacturing jobs.

Vlad: Trying out different designs for the Gold-Backed Special Ruble.
Med: I like the one with the fighter planes and the Orthodox Church.
Vlad: I can't decide. Maybe we'll print both. The USSA isn't the only ones who can put "In God We Trust" on their notes!
Med: Well, they have Bath House, the Muslim president.
Vlad: Look at that poll! I'm #2, right behind Trump!

I can't tell you how unimpressed I am.  If you had $1,000,000 in diversified stock shorts and could PROVE it, then I'll give you some credit.  Otherwise you and the other gold bugs can try to impress someone else with your "investing" acumen.

OH NO, I just incurred the wrath of the ZH GOLD BUGS.  Its like a fucking investing team that roots for one another with up and down votes.  Fuck the lot of you.  I'm not impressed with your "survival" strategy unless you figure out a method for getting beyond the reach of Uncle Fraud.  Most gun owners think the 2nd amendment protects them.  And the GOLD BUGS think they are protected as well.  I'm getting rather tired of the "lost it all in a boating accident" joke too.

That IS strange.  In March 2014, nearly 2 years ago, gold was $1,235.  Yet look how much more chaotic and dangerous the world is.  Gold should be $1,500+.  I don't get it.

I found this curious also.

I finally surmised, complete conjecture on my part, that those with physical could also be leveraged in the market and vulnerable to margin calls, which (to me) might explain why the market and gold go down in tandem like what occurred in 2008 and then again when they announced QE2??? or was it QE3 in Oct 2011. I was short and they ate my lunch and gold went down....briefly, relative to the 10 year chart.

BTFD has been the mantra since late 2011 and people were trained to stay away from the barbaric metal. All the while I am sure the TBTF, and Chinese have been continually stacking in anticipation, and complete coordination, to what is occurring at this very moment.

That Julie Hyman girl, on CNBC, actually used the forbidden word...CAPITULATION..today during the broadcast, which tells me the stockholders of the FRB have cashed out and liquidated and are ready for some bargain shopping to buy all of the real assets on the planet remaining.

We are but, 7 meals from complete anarchy.

I think I am going to stock up on dry beans, rice, canned chicken, and cash tomorrow. I have a few month worth now but, I want a more to trade.

I have thought a lot about owning PMs and have concluded that you can have it but, you dare not spend it because when you do, try and spend it, the first tiny bit you will be exposed. They will find you and take that chit from you.

Picture Blackwater, hundreds of them, like pirates, gutting you and your family for your stash.

The brother of a friend of my dad, Thaddeus Mudd, collected gold coins, erred and dropped his guard and some guy he hired to work on his house came back and killed him for those coins and I will never forget that, ever. He died before his time. It was a senseless, brutal crime. I think the death penalty was unconstitutional at the time etc. etc. you get my point I hope.

I would say more but, I don't want to put people off. I think silver might be more useful. Just a whole different animal. If Thaddeus would have collected silver coins he might have lived a much longer life. Something about gold........?????????

It is quite simple. The price of gold is relative. With all the problems in Europe, China, and the EM's, the US dollar has been strengthening, lowering the price of gold in US dollar terms. If you had bought gold last year in euros or CDN dollars you would have done very well.

Shhh !! If GOLD rises people may start to think they have been BULLSHITTED to about the economies actual health !! We don't want people THINKING !! As George Bernard Shaw said - "Most people only think 2 or 3 times a year - I have become internationally renowned thinking 2 or 3 times a week " - So there you have it - Dead FUCKING easy !

I'm no economist.

But, regarding "value stocks", it appears to me, personally, that $VLE pretty clearly broke its head-and-shoulders, using weekly candlestick bars, last week, and is continuing down, and therefore I will be watching for $VLE 3700 (or, of course, lower)....

$RUT and $MID appear to me to have broken their weekly heads-and-shoulders last week, too.

SPY and QQQ have yet to do break, but I like to watch $RUT, $MID, and $VLE, because I think they're broader indeces.

AGG and MBB seem to me to be doing okay.

HYG and JNK just look terrible to me.
