Explosions, Gunfire Rock Indonesia Capital: 4 Dead (1 Cop); 14 Gunmen, Suicide Bombers Involved (ISIS Suspected)

Two months after the Paris explosions of November 13, it appears terrorism has struck again, this time in Indonesia's capital, Jakarta where moments ago, at least six bomb explosions, gunfire and casualties were reported (AFP is reporting three dead but this is unconfirmed), with at least one of the explosions taking place near the local UN office.

One witness claimed men on motorbikes threw grenades.

The moment of one of the explosions...

As AP reports,

A massive explosion rocked downtown Jakarta in front of a popular shopping mall on Thursday and an Associated Press reporter saw at least one dead body.

Gunshots were heard after the midmorning explosion in front of the Sarinah shopping mall and a police station. The area also has many luxury hotels, and offices and embassies, including the French.

It was not clear who was shooting but police had cordoned off the area, preventing reporters from going near the scene.

Witnesses said the explosion was caused by a suicide bomber, but there was no immediate confirmation of the claim.

Indonesia has been a victim of several bombing attacks in the past, claimed by Islamic militant groups.

The country has been on high alert after authorities said they had foiled a plot by Islamic militants to attack government officials, foreigners and others. About 150,000 police officers and soldiers were deployed during New Year's Eve to guard churches, airports and other public places.

More than 9,000 police were also deployed in Bali, the site of Indonesia's deadliest terror attack, which killed 202 people in 2002.

National Police spokesman Maj. Gen. Anton Charliyan said security is focused on anticipating attacks in vulnerable regions, including Jakarta.

On Tuesday, the jailed radical Islamic cleric Abu Bakar Bashir appealed to an Indonesia court to have his conviction for funding a terror training camp overturned, arguing that his support for the camp was an act of worship.

The 77-year-old leader of the Jemaah Islamiyah militant network filed a judicial review of his 2011 conviction, when he was sentenced to 15 years in jail for setting up the camp in Aceh province. A higher court later cut the sentence to nine years.

At least one police officer has been wounded:

A UN Regional Representative is live-tweeting the horrific events...

As of this moment, the explosions appear to be yet another suicide bomber-driven terrorist attack, and we suspect it is only a matter of time before ISIS takes credit.

The local stocks have reacted dramatically:

And The Rupiah is tumbling...

This may or may not be related, but the Nikkei 225 is getting hammered tonight, dropped even lower on the bombing headlines.

At 11:30 EST it's down -742 points, good enough for a 4.21 % drop. That's got to hurt ...

“Every great magic trick consists of three parts or acts. The first part is called "The Pledge". The magician shows you something ordinary: a deck of cards, a bird or a man (Equities). He shows you this object. Perhaps he asks you to inspect it to see if it is indeed real, unaltered, normal (ratings agencies). But of course... it probably isn't.

The second act is called "The Turn" (The Big Short). The magician takes the ordinary something and makes it do something extraordinary. Now you're looking for the secret... but you won't find it, because of course you're not really looking. You don't really want to know. You want to be fooled. But you wouldn't clap yet. Because making something disappear isn't enough; you have to bring it back.

That's why every magic trick has a third act, the hardest part, the part we call "The Prestige."

The Third act is upon us.

in the unrelated-news subthread, here's Ted Cruz getting caught red-handed failing to declare a half-million dollar loan from Goldman Sachs that put him in the Senate: https://www.texastribune.org/2016/01/13/cruz-campaign-2012-disclosure-sh...

Cruz did his job taking Rand Paul out of contention and now it's his turn to realize too late that he's been used like a douche.

Sometimes you need to trust your heart.

So far as I am able to discern, Cruz has fought hard for individual rights and has certainly been a one-man wrecking crew in the Senate.

Would I be happier if his wife worked for Denny's? Perhaps. But we have to work with the tools we have and not the tools we would like to have.

Driving along a lonely rural highway and listening to his commercial on the AM radio, I feel hope.

With Trump, I feel the passion but I greatly fear his inherent constitutional ignorance. He is, at bottom, a Boulanger that may or may not be the answer but will undoubtedly advance the cause of "strongman" rule.

This may turn out to be a major mistake once some other strongman moves onto the scene. It is the possibility of him being a mirror-image of Obama-ism that prevents me from making him my first choice.

If only we could meld Cruz's conservatism with Paul's understanding of the constitution and throw in a goodly measure of Trump's confidence and willingness to fight, we would really have something.

I would prefer Rand Paul but he is not going to make it to the top of the greasy pole but I still hope for a VP nod. I like Ben Carson but I fear that we need more of a fighter than a calm technician, however likeable as a human being. I will take the flaws of Cruz first, then the flaws of Trump second, and hope that Fate has not totally deserted us in this hour of need.

I do not seek a dictator I like as oppsoed to one I do not like.

I want the constitution restored to its rightful place at the head of the table, where it belongs. If we lose that, no man however mighty will be able to rescue us.

My heart tells me that there's no way in hell a lawyer with a Harvard degree and a Goldman Sachs wife will do anything to upset the apple cart. Three strikes on him.

Cruz' absence from the Audit the Fed vote speaks volumes to that end.

If I vote at all in the general it will be to write in Ron Paul... again. Or maybe Vermin Supreme this time just to mix it up some.

I'll admit it's an unlikely combination of factors but we live in a nation founded by renegades.

The man is running for President and his vote would not have gotten them over the 60 hump so I'm inclined to skip over the matter as a tactical decision in this one instance. I am encouraged by the idea that the vote is getting close and the concept is gaining wider acceptability.

Everything he's done in the race from the very beginning has been to sabotage Rand Paul.

Much of what he brings to the table is redundant with and inferior to Paul. He knew Paul was entering the race for a long time, and also knew when. He chose to jump in immediately before a long-planned Paul announcement.

As far as who he really is politically, his proposal to expand the H1-B program to a half-million every year tells me all I need to know - he is an extreme corporatist wolf in liberty sheep's clothing. There's no excuse for that in the context of the crushing employment picture that Americans have been facing.

Thu, 01/14/2016 - 03:14 | 7044803 tarabel

Oh, I'd prefer Rand over the whole lot of them but it isn't going to happen this time for a large number of reasons.

Again, if I have not conveyed it properly yet, it is most likely that you are correct in your assessment. Yet, given where we stand at the moment, I hope that you are not correct and that we have another option besides the most desirable one that is no longer viable in this election cycle.

Rand for VP and Ebola for whoever wins the nomination. How's that? I must away.

False flag just means doing something and pretending it was someone else who's doing it.

Seeing as how the US created ISIS wouldn't it be more effective to level criticism at the American government? It's their policy after all.

Wed, 01/13/2016 - 23:55 | 7044460 Sanity Bear

I'd be more specific.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton created ISIS, with her Saudi advisor Huma brokering the deal, whereby in exchange for the assistance of the CIA in supplying and training ISIS, the Saudis would compensate the Clintons with enormous sums donated to the Clinton Foundation, in addition to additional payoffs via "speaking fees" for Bill, and for cronies such as Cheryl Mills.

There. See how much more informative it is when names are named? And it leaves people like you and I, who have zero effect on this, out of it... whereas saying it's "the US" casts too wide a net and allows the individual culprits to escape the blame that rightfully belongs to them.
