How Did Americans Get So Fat, In Seven Charts
Americans are fat. They are so fat very few would even bother to click on a hyperlink in this article explaining how fat they are, so instead we will present an animated chart showing the severity of the US obesity problem over the past 30 years.

Cartoons aside, here are the facts: today two-thirds of U.S. adults are overweight or obese. Half are afflicted with chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure that can often be prevented with better diets, but aren't and as a result debt-funded healthcare costs have exploded, and while this chronic obesity has made pharma companies richer beyond their wildest dreams, it means future US healthcare spending and welfare obligations are unsustainable.
America didn't get this way overnight. The average calories available to the average American increased 25 percent, to more than 2500, between 1970 and 2010, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. There was no extra meal added to the day, instead an evolution in the type of foods Americans eat led to steady growth in calories.
Added fats and grains account for a growing share of total caloric intake. These two categories, which include oils and fats in processed foods and flour in cereals and breads, made up about 37 percent of our diet in 1970. By 2010, they were 46 percent—a larger share of the growing pie. One of the main factor: cost; the increasingly more caloric foods become progressively cheaper and more affordable. The result: more of the lower and middle classes gravitated toward it, leading to the epidemic shown above.

First, this is where America's calories come from.
Cheese is replacing milk.
A lot more fat goes into our foods.
Calories from wheat, rice, and corn have increased. This includes refined grains like white bread that provide calories but are stripped of much of the nutrients in whole grains.
There are some indications that Americans are changing their diets to become healthier. For example, we're swapping red meat for chicken.
And though corn syrup boomed since the 1970s, the total amount of sweeteners we eat has declined. That's partly because Americans are drinking less soda.
These positive changes haven't negated the overall increase in calories on our plates. More than two-thirds of U.S. adults are overweight or obese, compared to less than half in the 1970s.
The government's dietary guidelines are simple: "Almost all people in the United States could benefit from shifting choices to better support healthy eating patterns." Right, now if only the government would also subsidize this healthy - which means more expensive - eating. We won't hold our breath: after all the massive pharma lobby would generate far less profits for its clients if US obesity were to sharply decline as a result of someone doing the right thing.
So until something does take place to shock the US out of its fatty momentum, here is Family Guy.

Nutrition is only part of it. How many people are on some sort of drug that produces side effects of weight gain and fluid retention? You can watch your diet all you want and exercise until the cows come home. If you are on a psychotropic medication or anti depressant it won't matter. Plus there's the motivation thing if you are on these medications. I could list a whole pile of them but these are the biggest culprits. If times are not good and people are working 2-3 jobs to get by (hence the low unemployment) where do you think they eat? Right, coffee shops and fast food places. Do they exercise after working shift work and all different hours? No. They are trying to survive.
When you feel crappy about things or are scared you waste a lot of energy on this. Foods to combat these feelings are usually rich in sugars to stimulate feel good chemicals in the brain. This conundrum usually arises when all the variables in society that instill hope and faith break down. When people lose their pride and start to rely on the government for handouts. Sound familiar? Poor health is a product of stress and its chemical by products too. The corporate attitude is "don't educate them but rather give them what they want", which is the consumate sales line of course. It says essentially people are going to do what they do so we'll just give it to them. It translates into not giving a shit about your fellow man. This is a collasal problem that will likely get a lot worse until people regain their pride. The strain on the medical system will be incredible.

It's the food stupid fat americans. Stop eating corn syrup. Stop drinking or eating "food" with fake sugar that actually makes you more fat than ingesting real sugar. Stop eating processed bullshit that idiots call food. Limit the amount of fructose that you intake and limit the carbs. Human beings are designed to eat veggies, fruit and meat period. If you eat wheat at all, eat organic, non-GMO sprouted wheat. It's pretty simple really. If you know where your food came from and it was treated with respect, then you cooked it without unnessary processing you won't be a fat fuck. It really is that easy. Exercise is great, but you have to feed your body good fuel first. There's plenty of people that exercise regularly but eat like shit and are still fat fucks.

I like the women at the gym who starve themselves nutritionally by eating nothing but green salads all day, hit the gym to work off massive calories, then get home and down a bottle or two of wine with their dinner salad and then bitch and moan about not being able to get rid of their bloated midsection or cellulite. Knock knock ladies..... ;-) !!!!
I dunno, with age I'm eating less and weighing more, I suppose exercising a little less but what you gonna do as the joints start creaking?
One good news on the nutrition front is the trans-fats everyone got into in the 1950s are finally on their way out, if you haven't read up on those they were the worst of the worst and a bad mistake.
Yeah I suppose we should eat less carbs and sugars, but I'm here to tell you it ain't that simple.
I've been out of the U.S. so long that it kind of shocks me how fat Americans are when I see them.
However, before anyone thinks I'm up on some high horse, the only reason Europeans aren't fat is they are poor. Too poor to afford food. Too poor to afford cars. So they ride bikes and walk everywhere and eat very little compared to Americans. Do you know how expensive food is in Norway, for example? Way too expensive for anyone that isn't rich to get fat on.
Bring a European to America and they gain weight quickly. Very quickly. Our food is too good and too cheap to not eat it.
But anyway, even "hot" Hollywood actress types are often overweight by European standards.
Average weight of a 30 year old American woman is 170 pounds. That's the real crime here. Fat bloated land whales. No woman should weigh more than 150 pounds EVER, and even at 150 most women are VERY VERY fat.

Unless they are 6 ft or above like some of us Amazons. 6'1", 150 and a size 6/8 here, 50+ and still have pretty rock hard everything (ok, there's some jiggling, but if noone notices but me, why point it out). Of course, it goes the other way here. I don a pair of heels and the average 50+ man looks like my overweight midget grandfather these days. Cougaring is an option, but the 20-40 crowd, though cute and sweetly dumb, drink too much and even if they aren't fat , they are fatigued all the time (which probably has something to do with their bad nutrition as well). Thank god for batteries and movies with gods like Daniel Craig, Mads Mikkelsen, Vigo Mortensen, and the like in them. A girl has got to do what a girl has got to do.

This is the result of a corrupt system - particularly the FDA and AMA. Of course some of the doctors are just ignorant since in 8 years of medical school they get only about an hour of nutritional training.
First destroy the disposable income of the people, then flood the stores with cheap food made mostly of taste enhanced chemicals. Since it's now the only food most people can afford they buy it - WHY? Because the FDA says it's all fine for you - and even if it's not Big Pharma will have a pill for that.
Then get doctors to endorse low fat, whole grain diets along with Diet Colas (linked to carb cravings and diabetes) and Viola! Fat, sick and nearly dead.
And for the final blow, flood the grocery stores with GMO foods that have been COVERED in pesticides so when the people eat them their gut bacteria are destroyed which leads to tremendous amounts of all kinds of fun diseases. THEN - right back to the doctor and Big Pharma to treat your fat ass for even more money.
Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life.

I'd rather be fat and strong than thin and weak. I'm 50 pounds over what I weighed when I was in the military and I'd rather be this weight because I'm much, much stronger and more effective in hand to hand combat at this weight.

I was 165lbs and 6'2" my whole life, even throughout my time in the Marines. In 2011 i decided I was tired of being skinny so I started eating 4000 calories a day and lifting weights regularly doing mostly compound lifts. Im now 230lbs with a little fat I could stand to lose but It was the best decision Ive ever made, Im so much stronger than I used to be and people dont fuck with me near as much as they used to.
Very few people fuck with a 200+ pound man that lifts. Truth.

Cortisol (a hormone that mobilizes your body for performance in emergencies) in your system too long actually erodes your arteries, veins, even some of the glands in your brain, and apparently serves to keep weight on your body. You're right about the grocery store. When I went on strict paleo last summer, after about 3 weeks I had to go to a grocery store (had been avoiding).
It was overwhelming. EVerywhere I looked: potato chips, crackers, candy, sodas, coffee drinks, cookies. cakes, AARRRGGGHHH!!!!
I had to get out of there.
