The Map That Will Change The Way You See The World

Tyler Durden's picture

How do you view your country relative to others? Chances are if it’s based on most world maps, your view is distorted.

As the world turns its gaze to the rich and pretty people in Davos this coming week, The World Economic Forum unleashed the following cartogram, created by Reddit user TeaDranks, that could change your entire perception of the world. Cartograms scale a region’s geographic space according to a particular attribute and in this case each square now represents 500,000 people.

(click image for massive legible version)

We all know that India and China have large populations, but this map emphasises their size on a global scale. Compared to conventional world maps, the two Asian powerhouses dominate. Along with several East Asian neighbours – Bangladesh, Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia – their contribution to the global population is clear.

The size of Nigeria and Brazil compared to the rest of Africa and Latin America is equally apparent.

The map also effectively highlights the contribution of cities and regions to total populations. For example, the greater Tokyo region accounts for a significant proportion of Japan’s overall population. Equally, Delhi, Shanghai and Mumbai all occupy areas larger than many European nations.

At the other end of the scale, some economies which are barely visible on traditional world maps appear much larger on the cartogram. Consider the cases of Hong Kong and Taiwan, whose relatively large populations compared to their geographical sizes see them feature much more prominently.

Conversely, some countries which are very large on conventional maps can barely be seen. Canada, Russia and Australia are much smaller in TeaDranks’ representation, which was inspired by Paul Breding’s 2005 work. Canada in particular disappears almost entirely.

It's kind of obvious. I mean, my family tree (in Canada) has been shrinking for generations. My grandparents had 6 and 8 kids. None of those kids (my parents, aunts and uncles) had more than 2 kids each. Less than half of them (me and my cousins) had kids at all, and those who did only had 1. That level on my family tree has fewer than the 14 kids that were in the generation before me. I know lots of people like this.

In my case though, I get it. It's all about inferior physical traits in my genetics. Ah well...what can you do?

Past generations were closer to farming, which required more "manpower."  Families were larger in order to facilitate farming.

The REAL source of decline is directly attributable to industrialization: geez, like duh! we see it today yet we cannot understand its affects years ago?

Feminism was primarily a project by industry to stoke the consumer pool: increase household income.  The "white" "culture" is based on consumerism- children's consumption (or consumption for them) pales in comparison to that of the grown-ups.

If "whites" wish to increase in numbers then they'll have to do it by living a LOT closer to the subsistence level.

There are a lot of Chinese living in the Russian Far East. Unofficial figures say up to 5 million Chinese are currently living in the Russian Far East. Invasion is not the correct word. It will happen much like Mexicans in the US, slowly and steadily. Putin said in a 2000 visit to the region that within a few decades most of the population would be speaking Chinese, Korean or Japanese.

Specifically, a now-dying retail chain, K-Mart, used to have discounted items on rolling tables in varying places in the store, with a blue police light on a pole up above. They've always been known as "blue light specials."

However, Wal-Mart and Target are the winners of the big-box wars, and there are only a few K-Marts left. And those that are left are in pretty bad shape.

Yes, very off topic! But let me enlighten you. Hows about the USA dumping Saudi Arabia and becoming best buddies with Iran. For all the western prestitute media's dissing of Iran, in fact Iran is a quite modern country and has a human rights record that would shame the Saudis. (For that matter Ming of Mongo's human rights record would shame the Saudis.) Fifty years ago I told everyone whom I met that Iran was the Germany of Southern Asia. They're a bit rigid, a bit overbearing, a bit opinionated, but mama! even then they sure knew how to do business.

Impossible, you say? Wrong! Dealing with the Saudis--ever--was the impossilbe task. And the Saudis have been complicit in every bad deal since the first World Trade Center bombing in the 1990s. The price of the Saudi oil flow has been the Islamic evangelical Salafist heresy which is foundational to every Islamic jihadist. Saudi Arabia proselitizes the whole Muslim world with jihad and hatred of everything except it's fundamentalist agenda.

So, why not Iran. Check it! If the Saudis lose their preferential position in the world of oil, if the house of Saud collapses, the petro-barons of the west might have both Iranian oil as well as oil from the much weaker successor state(s) to Saudi Arabia.

According to some sources, the Saudies are running out of oil. If true, that would account for the switch to Iran and the war in Yeman. Yeman has abundant supplies that haven't been tapped.

The Persians are more civilized than the Arabians. If we had not set up a puppet government that abused the Iranian people after WWII, the extremists wouldn't have taken control in '79.

We won't be close to Iran as long as Israel's crazy right wing war hawks control them. And us! Besides we still have that petrodollar thing with Suadi Arabia. That's why we overlook their huge human rights problems, but use "human rights" as the fake reason to bomb lesser dictatorships that are threatening the petrodollar scheme.

The clear message is: Syrian migrants don't belong in Europe or the U.S.! Send them to Russia. Russia is a traditional Syrian ally, so already friendly, and clearly they have lots of empty space. Best of all, Russia is still close enough to visit home and make the Haj.

An artisan brewer called US walks into a brewery called 'The Middle East' looking for this barman called Saudi who just trashed his house. Saudi, seeing US was a bit upset, buys him a pint... actually lots and lots of pints, and tells him to take his revenge out on three innocent bystanders called Libya, Syria and Iraq. US beats Iraq up. Then gets his friend, Europe, to beat Libya up. Then he gets his friend, Turkey and some other random dudes to beat Syria up. Saudi meanwhile gives US, Europe and Turkey lots of free beers. A guy called Russia from the biggest brewery in town tries to patch his mate Syria up, but Syria goes staggering out the brewery and crashes at Europe's place, which freaks out Europe's wife, Merkel, because her teenage daughters like to run around the house in their bikinis. Then Saudi serves more free beers, and starts a fight with the enemy of a friend called Yemen, just for the fun of it.

The cops are called. They're all called up before Justice Economics the following morning.

Justice Economics sentences US to ten years deflation. Syria, Iraq and Libya are covered in bruises, so are put in protective custody. Saudi and Russia are both given a budget crisis. Europe's sentenced to another fifty years of collectivism, welfarism and Keynesianism. And China, who wasn't even at the bar that night, is given a short bout of contraction before being told to take over US and Saudi's businesses.
