Germany & The Incompatibility Of Cultures

Tyler Durden's picture

Authored by Shamil Shams, op-ed via,

Cologne’s xenophobic assaults on Muslims are disgraceful. But DW's Shamil Shams feels that they just show how Germans feel increasingly threatened by a culture that is not compatible with their norms.

As a Pakistani journalist working in Germany, I have been very skeptical about the German government's decision to allow thousands of refugees into the country without much scrutiny of their backgrounds.

Of course, I am empathetic towards the plight of the people who are fleeing war-torn countries like Syria, who are facing immense oppression and violence at the hands of Islamic militants as well as President Bashar Assad. I understand their woes, the pain of losing their loved ones, their homes and livelihoods in a civil war that continues to ravage the once peaceful country.

But at the same time, I was sure that the migrants' influx would ultimately disturb the harmony and balance of German society. I feel that Islamic culture and European norms are not compatible.

Most Germans have responded to the refugee crisis with exemplary humanism. My European friends got angry when I warned them against Chancellor Merkel's migrant-friendly policy. I found it very naïve that many Germans believed that all Middle Eastern and South Asian refugees would conform to their way of life and values. I told my friends that their understanding of the Muslim world was limited and flawed. They didn't pay much attention to my arguments.

My worst fears came true when hundreds of young men allegedly from Middle Eastern and North African countries sexually assaulted German women in Cologne on New Year's Eve. Many say it was a pre-planned attack, as the Muslim men groped and touched the women's private parts shamelessly. And now the Germans are finally debating whether it was a good idea to be so open to embracing people from alien cultures.

Actually, I never felt more ashamed in my life.

I am a person from a Muslim background who has been living in Germany for many years, and have always been treated with respect and humility. I have always felt safer in Germany than in Pakistan. I have many German friends and I never felt alienated in the society.

But the New Year's Eve assault made me realize that I, too, in a way feel responsible for the heinous act: What happened in Cologne happens regularly in my homeland, Pakistan. The men are never ashamed, never feel guilty, never show remorse about the way they treat women in that part of the world.

The men who sexually harassed girls in Cologne were not demented; they knew what they were doing. And I am sure they did it with absolute contempt for the European culture, its norms and its people.

More than retaliation

Now we see a backlash from the far-right German groups. On Sunday evening, a group of 20 people attacked six Pakistanis and a Syrian national near Cologne's central station - a place where I have often walked freely even after midnight. Some people were seriously injured and had to be taken to hospital. The German media described the attackers as "bikers, hooligans and bouncers." It was a shameful and reactionary act, but what else would you expect from the right-wing groups?

I could have been one of the Pakistanis beaten up by the hooligans. They wouldn't have interviewed me before throwing a punch at me or hurling an insult. They wouldn't have known that I am an atheist who has been writing critically about Islamic extremism for over 15 years. They wouldn't have been bothered about all this. For them, I would have been just another Muslim, another South Asian, bent on changing their way of life.

The attackers might be politically motivated, but their fear can not be ignored.

German society is changing, with right-wing Christian as well as Islamic groups getting stronger by the day. It is an alarming situation for the majority of secular people in Germany and Europe.

If the German government wants to protect the country's secular foundations, it must increase checks on the people it intends to integrate into its society. Integration is not only about learning the German language.

I know many Muslims who have been living in Germany for decades, speak fluent German, yet they harbor deep resentment against secularism and Western values.

The rise of Salafism in Germany has given more impetus to right-wing movements in the country. Pegida is just one example.

What happened on New Year's Eve could change the way Germans live and treat foreigners forever. The government must make sure this doesn't happen.

And I, as a foreigner, also have a responsibility in this regard.

What is potentially even more concerning is Germany wants to import even more refugees...

Volker Kauder, leader of Angela Merkel’s Christian Union bloc in parliament, says on ZDF public television the Chancellor needs time to solve the refugee crisis “and a little patience is needed.”

Coalition to take the necessary measures jointly to stem the refuge flow.

Coalition has agreed that it wants to add Morocco, Algeria to the list of safe countries of origin, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier to take action

The problem is the way things are set up, preference is given to the kind of people you don't want in your country, all in the name of 'tolerance'.......

Miles Ahead's picture

When the Arabs brought Science, Medicine, and Algebra among other things to Spain, most of Europe were still closer to Cavemen than civilized human beings.   Granada was the seat of culture and learning in Europe at the time.

And we Indians were "tolerant".  Look what it got us... with small pox thrown in for fun.

Sorry. It's the entire population of underclass, unskilled, low-educated men between the ages of 15-35. They pour into Europe in HUGE numbers without women and families and jobs for stablity. They'd be a threat to ANY community. Western "values" or not. Even to those communities and cultures who may be initially welcoming. There are simply too many to absorb.

This has been done PURPOSEFULLY by the same evit fukwits who pushed perpetual war in the ME. The Vision 2020 tribe. Fuck 'em.

Sounds like you are describing the Allied armies in 1945 - they raped far more European women in one year than the Muslim population have in Western Europe during the last millennium.

You'd think there wasn't such a thing as "culture" or "cultured".

I'm baffled by European eagerness to import members of a culture that oppresses Women and is intolerant of other cultures; isn't that what they profess to be against?  Why import it by the million?  And why does that not bother or worry most individual Europeans?

debtor of last resort's picture

That does bother most Europeans. The msm, politics and koombaya movements have infested almost everything with their muzzie kuddling multicultural sickness.

UselessEater's picture

European eagerness perhaps something to do with type of white guilt indoctrination from cradle to grave: 2min Michael Walsh "Our Children Curse Us"...note some of the school activities, dear God, I wouldn't allow any kid of any creed to participate!

Ghordius's picture

%! European eagerness? I don't think there is anybody here that is eager to do anything like that. of course there is the cheap labour angle, yes, but that one is marginal, imho

look, there is one angle that has been completely neglected. some stuff happens... and get's a "PR wrapper" around it

example: in two or three weeks time, the US sailors that were released by Iran will be the only part of that deal that is remembered. that's the "PR wrapper" of the thing, and it's main purpose, one of the reasons why it was crafted in the first place is to distort, hide and obfuscate the memory, already fading, of the broader exchange of prisoners and other detained people between Iran and the US

similarly, now practically everybody here in Europe, the Brits in vanguard, is blaming Merkel for "opening the gates". fine for me, Merkel had her time, and possibly she did make a grave misjudgement

but the situation to which she reacted... is already fading away from the collective (media) memory

the situation was some 30'000 people stuck in Hungary, with the Hungarian PM talking openly of "doing something about them". possibly internement?

and there... I smell a rat. I have nobody anymore in Hungary that could give me input on this, but I smell a pre-emptive move by Merkel, and a "Hungarian plan" that was "foiled"

nobody, I repeat nobody is getting into what Hungary was going to do with them, or if it would have been better or worse. that's already very suspicious

yes, there were some shrill pan-european leftist cries that he was planning to put them in something that would have looked like concentration camps in their eyes

what I am missing here is if there was a Russian input in all this. because the whole smells like a German-American "let's foil this Russian-Hungarian plan", you know, "because"

what was Hungary going to do, exactly? an "internement for cash" deal looks possible, but not sufficiently hardline enough to explain Merkel's move completely

and Victor Orban just wanting to embarass them and do his part in the dismantling of the Schengen Area is likely, but still not enough

sure, the Russian leadership would be happy to see the Schengen Area go the way of the dodo, but I can't hardly imagine they are keen to push for it, except for the propaganda angle

of course, you could say that a million or more refugees makes Germany more likely to push for a military solution in Syria, but that's also not enough, imho

fact is that the war in Syria has displaced people in the tens of millions. never forget that. fact is that the whole North of Africa and the ME are a huge mess. never forget that

we are still reaping the "results" of 9/11 and "Saddam Hussein's WMD's". that's only my opinion, but I regard it as a near fact, too

FlipFlop's picture

I was thinking the same.

How did this happen so quickly? Has this been planned from the beginning? Where did those people come to welcome "refugees" with flowers?

Now reading commentary on web, it seems that people are ready to accept deportations and more. It took only two months, and by the end of the coming rape season there is probably a full war going on.

techpriest's picture

It didn't happen quickly.

Think about a diabetic getting his foot cut off. Sure, from the first sore appearing to the foot getting cut off it seems 'fast,' but in reality you see the bad habits leading to worsening health all the way back to childhood.

In this case, the "bad habit" is the same secularism the author is praising, particularly secularism combined with a human habit of choosing expedient solutions. Building a family is hard. Admitting that NATO has outlived its purpose is hard. A politician saying "no" to TPTB is both hard and dangerous. But the easy path has consequences and they've been building for decades.

I'm sure that there were a handful of useful idiots who really did welcome the mass wave of refugees with flowers, but there has also been a percentage of the population who was upset about it. However, they weren't willing to do anything until conditions hit a certain breaking point. Now that we're past the breaking point the mask of civility is coming off and we are seeing true human nature.

Keep this in mind when you think about any political divisions in your own country. Here in America I am often shocked at the dehumanizing language people from the Left and Right use toward their opponents (esp. the Left and statist variant of the Right). There are going to be consequences, and I'm sure everyone will be saying "How could this happen?! Who could have seen it coming?! It all happened so fast!"

Chaos and Violence: How New Year's Eve in Cologne Has Changed Germany(Der Spiegel)

New Year's Eve in Cologne rapidly descended into a chaotic free-for-all involving sexual assault and theft, most of it apparently committed by foreigners. It has launched a bitter debate over immigration and refugees in Germany -- one that could change the country. By SPIEGEL Staff

The happenings on the square between the Cologne Cathedral and the main train station was as symbolic as they were real: symbolic of the state's powerlessness in the face of chaos and crime.

The stories on that had the police feeling helpless! How can that happen?  No radios, no backups?  Sounded like orders to me, and if that police chief does well after being fired, we will know it was manufactured news for political effect.

As so much news is, these days.

wow.very refreshing.  i am an immigrant to germany as well.  for the last 17 years i have worked, paid taxes, married fathered and not run afoul of the law.  there were periods of adjustment to the culture , some positive and some not so.

i have always respected the country and its differences and found daily life far less threatening than life in the usa.

people who migrate for whatever reason need to do some adjusting in order to fit in.  some people dont have this fundamental respect and see any requirements put upon them with resentment.  many muslims have been indoctrinated to believe that westerners are infidels and as such deserve no respect.

tolerance is a two way street and when any class of people believe that they are singularly above that mutuality are free to leave for their pristing homeland.

Adult Europeans under the age of 65 never experienced WWII directly, and Europeans under the age of 45 grew up in relative affluence. They grew up at a time when their economies were growing, jobs were plenty, their social welfare systems worked flawlessly and racial homogeneity was a given. In short... most adult Europeans grew up in fucking lala land.

That it is the very same pampered deluded arrogant classes pampered by entitlements who's only real genius was being born at just the right time in just the right place. It's obvious during their formative years in school their nebulous ideas were never seriously challenged; their academic careers must have been long slow weeks of pleasant self-congratulatory dick-sucking orgies reimagining a world remade as the lala land they inhabited, because those are the very policies they've crafted to invite the current doom that will be their demise.

Darwin called it "natural selection."

Yep. History's an unforgiving bitch. Watch out, here comes The Turn.

here just one of my stories: when the flood migrant (im a migrant too) came to europe after soviet collapse there were older classes with barley muslims in them and all lower classes were 90% above muslim. my teacher said that they were quite "problematic" an uneducatable. and i said that its because they are mulato muslims. she attacked me with an angry voice and said "it has nothing to do with that" and tried to convince me other by bringing up examples. after that she never looked friendly at me ever again.

here is the video

on sputnik they said that muslims kidnapped the girl before school by luring her into a car

then 3 guys raped her 1 day long

german police attacked the girl by trying to make her confess that she purposely seduced the rapist.

her parents and the russian community in germany are in great shock.

all people are scared for their children in germany. police does not protect them any longer. i have some friends in germany (non of them are german) and one of tham said that he was attacked by a filthy muslim while shpping and called the police.  all of it catched on camera in the shop. and the policeman said that they will not help him and he should stay away from muslims. WTF
