In The Past Year, The U.S. Added 360,000 Waiters And Only 12,000 Manufacturing Workers

Tyler Durden's picture

We already know that US jobs "growth" continues entirely on the back of (seasonally adjusted) minimum wage job growth, and since this has been one of our preferred topics exposing the hollow core of the so-called "recovery", we once again show the divergence between the two job categories that have come to define the New Paranormal: waiters and bartenders, aka the only truly growing (minimum wage) job category, and manufacturing workers - well paid jobs which sadly are no longer being created.

Here is how this "recovery" has looked: since last February, the US has added 360K waiters; in the same time, a paltry 12,000 manufacturing workers have been added as shown in the chart below.

How about longer-term? The next chart shows the cumulative growth (and decline) in waiter and bartender jobs since the start of the depression in December 2007. Waiter jobs added: 1.6 million and rising by 40K in February; manufacturing jobs lost: 1.4 million and dropping by 16K in February.

And that, in one chart, is your "recovery."

That's 30 waitresses and bartenders per manufacturing employee. That can only mean they will get great service!

#winning!

Everyone knows we would rather work in a nice restaurant than a smelly manufacturing job, especially if it is only 30 hours per week.

Utopia is finally here!!!

All part of a natural transition from a manufacturing economy to a service economy. Not a bad thing at all. It's sad that zerohedge disparages and demeans service professionals, when these people are going to develop into the future leaders of our service economy. A significant proportion of today's  waiters and cashiers will one day become executives and CEOs of the world's leading service companies.

I've tried to explain to people that you can't have an economy where everyone just gives each other haircuts and guitar lessons. Leftist Sanders supporters adamantly refuse to recognize the truth of this.

EVERYTHING IS AWESOME!

I run into these people too. The socialist "paradise" is very seductive to someone who has been working 2 jobs and supporting kids. I've even had 1 or 2 people tell me that we should just "get rid of money"... fortunately most of the ones I've run into can be convinced otherwise. I just tell them, "You can't get rid of money, it is an invention like any other, it would be like calling for the ban of personal computers, you just can't stop people from acting on what they know."

Irony of the day.. most of these people I talk to about this are waitresses or bartenders.

Of course 19th Century socialism theories are attractive to the low-income working class.

Hard work has not only no value in our society, it has negative value in society and is not rewarded.

I deal with shitty real estate investors. These guys aren't qualified to run a mop and bucket, or even stock a shelf at Walmart, but somehow got into RE. They run their properties into the ground, yet somehow they still drive a BMW and live a upper middle class lifestyle. Meanwhile I know people who work 2 part time jobs at about 60 hours a week, and they have to shack up with roomates to afford the $1300 rent on a 2 bedroom apartment. They drive a beater car purchased from a buy here pay here where its repairs are more money than the car itself, so they bum rides or wait for a bus that rarely shows up on time.

We already have "socialism" except it benefits the financial sector, and the rest of the working class who do REAL productive work for a living is given the middle finger.

America's lost liberty resulted in a vacuum where greed - NOT Capitalism - took its place. Now, Your Rulers' Finery http://wp.me/p2kmGE-8M takes precedent over YOUR freedom.

Couple the vanishing of responsibility of every economic class to such an atmosphere and you get 2016.

Fri, 03/04/2016 - 12:24 | 7271348 HenryHall

I wasn't aware of any difference between greed and capitalism. Please explain.

Classic hypothetical:

Third grader discovers her schoolmate has no packed lunch.

Socialist: Even though there isn't really enough for two, would you like to share my sandwich today?

Capitalist: Have you anything you can offer as collateral for the loan of half a sandwich?

Fri, 03/04/2016 - 12:59 | 7271563 Stuck on Zero

Non-hypothetical:

Socialist: You can't have mine. Go get yours from the state.

Capitalist: Have some of mine. You can owe me.

At a third grade level.  But just as likely, a Socialist would steal the sandwich from the capitalist's lunch pail and split it with her friends so they would think she is a nice person.

If the government economists include as manufacturing jobs those workers whose primary job is manufacturing bullshit, the increase in the number of manufacturing jobs would be in the millions and these jobs would be mostly in the government and financial sectors.

All part of the Hillary Clinton election strategy.

Force millenials to work 3 jobs so they don't have time to make it to polls, bus in seniors in the AM and close polling super early. Then send Bubba to cause delays so overworked 3 crappy job enslaved millenials have to go back to work before they can vote.

Slavery provides enormous benefits to the plantation owners that do not show up in .gov statistics.

She says 700,000 factories in Vietnam of all kinds.
