Thanks Obamacare: This Is What Americans Spent Most Money On In 2015

Tyler Durden's picture

We have been covering the consumption tax, pardon, endless spending black hole that is Obamacare for over a year, so we doubt it will come as a surprise to anyone that in 2015 healthcare was the second biggest use of US consumer funds, soaking up a record $1.9 trillion in real dollars, and more importantly for US economic "growth", the single biggest source of incremental spending by nearly a factor of two.

Incidentally, with spending on healthcare (courtesy of the Supreme Court's Obamacare tax) soaring, while outlays on the traditionally most consumption-intensive category, housing and utilities, going nowhere for the past several years, it is only a matter of 2-3 quarters before Healthcare surpasses Housing as the biggest use of American cash.

Putting this in context, a recent report from Freedom Partners Health found that health insurance premiums have increased faster than wages and inflation in recent years, rising an average of 28 percent from 2009 to 2014 despite the enactment of Obamacare, or rather "because of." Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law on March 23, 2010, and Wednesday is the law’s sixth anniversary.

So, without further ado, this is what drove American consumer spending in the officially concluded, for GDP purposes, 2015. We show this just in case there is still any confusion why US households are unable to channel more spending into "discretionary", non-mandatory purchases unlike Obama's "health insurance" tax, pardon, noble venture.

Very true but it all starts with our education system that produces ignorant dolts who are mostly concerned about their safe spaces and micro-aggressions (the HORRORS!!!!  "Someone wrote 'ump 2016' on the sidewalk and I thought it was a KKK rally.  Help me, campus administrators, help me.  Where is my 'free" counseling over this?") than living and producing in the real world.

If you like your F’n lying criminal Democrat leadership, you can keep your f’n lying criminal Democrat leadership.

Although no Repubs voted for ACA, it applies largely to them, as well.

I can bitch and moan all I want in a comments section of a blog, but this data is not new data. I can blame the schools and I can blame my family, but the ultimate responsibility rests with me as an adult. Beliefs are beliefs.

How is a tax a contribution to GDP?

pods's picture

Tax is a contribution because they say it is a contribution.

Now, how many fingers am I holding up?

I love how ACA has saved me $2,500 a year, Big Brother.

God forbid that these entitled little wimps would every need to defend themselves in a war...they can scream and yell and make demands with the best of them, but my guess is when the first shot is fired by a real enemy, they'll fold an roll over. Really really sad.

As I pointed out before, people will be begging for single payer healthcare soon.  ACA has succeeded beyond Obama's wildest dreams.  I figured 15-20 years to single payer.  It'll be less than 10.

g'kar's picture

less than 10 years probably.

we will go to a single payer system under .gov we trust. we will go to a single prayer system under sharia law we trust

It makes my cringe to agree, but I feel we are either at that point or headed there. Much of Europe has pussified to an amazing level now. Citizens there seemingly roll over and get fucked at an incredible rate, or seem gripped by Stockholm Syndrome.

Our own yutes here in the United States seem to be imitating that behavior now. Safe spaces, micro-this, micro-that...it's totally and completely perplexing.

My own 8 yr old is not some backyard bare-knuckle brawler, but he already stands out at school as a different thinker. I sometimes worry he'll receive unwarranted attention for being my son :)

Killdo's picture

I have never seen a nation more in fear of invisible friends (gods) and their own government. And such a bad case of Stockholm syndrome .

I meet people who are elated that they "got Medicaid". They are relieved, with a sense of accomplishmnet and entitlement. You have what an immigrant has, I think, and you are elated. That is where we are. Here, have the worst care, because only the worst medical providers would submit to the documentation nightmare that is Medicaid, and you are relieved.

This is where we are. Those scurrying in the matrix, us watching them, and the perps doing what perps do, and laughing. Aren't you all adorable, they think. Those mesmerized, and those frustrated, but all still frozen.

Been here for awhile, seen commenters come and go. Enter raging, articulate, and impassioned, then they drop off, go back to their lives as the machine grinds on, indifferent to the information and opinions vented. Hi, this is Kyle Roboshawn, reporting live on getting fucked in the ass.

But I left a relevant comment, identifying the injustice! Hi, this is Kyle Roboshawn,..

Party on, zhers, I envy those of you who have the luxurious time to reply. You must have lost lots of precious metals in boating accidents. I put us in the category of frustrated and frozen. You are my brothers and you are my teachers, but unless we get off the fucking screens, not much is gonna happen.

This is Kyle Roboshawn, paying for insurance I don't use, and shit, who has time to get medical care? I'm too busy working.

I share your antipathy and resignation. It's difficult to know where to begin.

During the previous revolutions, people within a geographic area had better cultural homogeny. It's ironic that in this age, while I can connect with someone across the globe effortlessly and instantaneously--people are more isolated from those adjacent to them than ever. Without a critical mass in one location, the necessary support to attempt meaningful change or departure is a severe complication.

Some combination of The Free State Project in NH followed by secession seems the only realistic escape outside of total currency collapse. There are many fundamental difficulties with that strategy too. I'm cynical of protesting as a mechanism. There is more to say, but it all amounts to the same thing.

How to begin? What are the concrete ends? What are we willing to put at stake?

These are difficult questions.

"... unless we get off the fucking  screens, not much is gonna happen".

Au contraire, mes Ami. A great, great deal IS gonna happen. Biggest, eternal unknowns are exactly when and in what precise fashion.

If history is a guide, the " when" could occur virtually anytime. Or perhaps well off into the future. No one knows or even CAN know.

How will it play out? In the USA, it depends on many factors (foreign influence, ethnic groups gaining ascendency in geographical areas, etc.).

However, throughout all times and places, reigning orders collapse.

A rule of thumb is that the most favored under the regime becomes the most disadvantaged (think elderly pensioners of Detroit).

Resource scarcity, or, more precisely in this uber financialized reality, the PERCEPTION of valuless currency, will trigger the downward spiral.

Neither you, I, nor any other like-minded people can prevent the oncoming deluge.

It greatly behooves diligent, industrious folks to mimic the Boy Scouts and semper  paratus.

You gotta stay healthy. Obamacare is a nightmare. I was forced off my private self-pay BCBS onto Obamacare CRAP and it's a nightmare even finding a doc who will accept it.

That's under "finacial services and insurance" (tax write- off).

The worst part is after you meet your deductible, you feel like you are on easy street. You only pay 20%.  Which is about what the shit should cost anyways.

So fucked.

For years the health insurance industry relied on obfuscation, misdirection and infinite complexities to rob us blind. Once that methodology becomes unsustainable due too unaffordable costs, it only makes sense that they would come to rely on the force of government to keep the gravy train going. THIS is the destructive force of a large and uncontrollable government we face, as every business of any size no longer seeks protection from these forces but their embrace.

"You only pay 20%.  Which is about what the shit should cost anyways."

Oklahoma Center for Surgery accepts cash only, no insurance. They publish a price list for all procedures, so you know what you are paying for up front. Their prices are about 75% less than what other hospitals charge. So, that tells you that pretty much every single dollar you spend on insurance is wasted.

pods's picture

Yep, that was where I estimated from Buck. Denninger has talked about them before.

Fucking nuts how bad our system is. I only go when I need a test or med I cannot get on google.

Powerslaved's picture

Only a matter of time until .gov makes it illegal to run a cash only healthcare facility. I don't have insurance and pay cash. That used to get you a lower rate but they put an end to that as well. It was unfair/racism to offer lower charges for cash.

In defense of those assholes- no repeal can take place while King Putt is in office. They don't have enough for the veto override.

That and the RINOS socialist jew FED masters said they can't repeal it.

Its called OMURDERCARE, not Obamacare. These mongoloid murderous troglodytes like Donald Berwick want to murder the sick and give out suicide pills to ration healtcare.

TemporarySecurity's picture

This is the exact reason we don't need Donald Trump. When the Obama care garbage was being pushed upon the American populace the only problem Donald had with it was it didn't go far enough. As a matter of fact Donald Trump is so brilliant at the age of 60 he thought Obama was doing a great job while forcing Obama care on us.

Now I'm glad that Donald Trump has finally grown up since the first Republican debate, however his first instinct is Marxist healthcare and I personally feel is lying now.

Actually Trump supports socialist medicine.  I realize these pesky facts are from way, way back in September of 2015:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6inQmf96SYQ

You make it sound as the ones "living and producing in the real world" are not even living in the same solar system (much less in the same age and mentality) as the ones who live and produce in "our education system". I guess I was wrong to think they are one and the same person.
