"Made Out Of Sand" - A Dramatic Look Inside A Newly Built Chinese Apartment

Tyler Durden's picture

While real estate is all about "location, location, location," it appears there are sometimes more prescient factors that any prospective buyer should pay attention to. Amid yet another government-fueled housing bubble, it seems in their haste to fulfil a rapacious demand for property in which to gamble their hard-grafted assets, Chinese construction companies have cut a few corners. As the following stunning video shows, a "newly constructed apartment" crumbles before the owners' eyes as the 'concrete' walls turn to sand...

LiveLeak exposes, in the following video, just how poor the standards can be of so-called “new” properties. LiveLeak footage shows two men in a supposedly “new apartment building” in China where the concrete walls crumble like sand.

China is currently in the midst of a huge property bubble...

And the country is full of “ghost cities” and new apartment blocks waiting to be filled. Which is no surprise considering that China used about 6.4 gigatons of cement during their construction boom between 2011 and 2013, which is more than what the US used during the entire 20th century. However, those housing properties in China are frequently not built to stand the test of time: In 2010, officials revealed that many homes had a lifespan of just 20 years.

Just like buying worthless companies in the stock market bubble ended very badly, it appears buying 'worthless' homes is set for the same outcome...

Quick, back into stocks

At least it will stop a bullet.....maybe.  That video is awesome.

"China used about 6.4 gigatons of cement during their construction boom between 2011 and 2013"

DID THEY??? DID THEY REALLY?? Looks more like they either didn't order enough cement, or they didn't use what they ordered.

carbonmutant's picture

Hey cement's expensive. Can't make a profit using that stuff...

It makes you fear for anyone downstream of the three gorges dam

Way back in the day, I lived in a Med coastal town for a few years.

The homes were high sand content concrete and the walls were solid and poured into forms.

The window installers would chip out holes for the windows and the electricians would chisel out grooves and holes for the 240V ac service and then finish the job with the same high sand content concrete.

It was a hoot to watch.

You could scratch a groove in the walls with a good set of finger nails.

And so castles made of sand,

fall into the sea - eventually.

I don't know if I would've stayed inside that deathtrap for as long as those two did.

Damn.  Would be interesting to trace the engineering company that tested the concrete and look at the results.  Lol

Also I think that concrete mix design needs to be nominated for the American Society for Testing Material hall of fame nomination under Darwin Award category.

We made stronger structures at the beach. And we were drunk.

Manthong's picture

Testing? Testing?

We don’t need no stinking compression testing!

We are in China.. we bribe the federales.

So this market will really collapse.

Manthong's picture

A 4.0 shaker will probably do it

Now you know why the death tolls often climb to six figures in third world class cities.

BTW.. I learned how to test for AC primary voltage from an indigenous electrician over there..

You lick your index and middle fingers and then swipe them quickly across the terminals.

I used to get hammered with down-arrows when I posted "China is the greatest fraud of the 21st century."  Now, it's more of an even split.  Eventually I think that comment will draw all greenies.

Are we learning?  It's ALL fake.  ALL OF IT.  Their financials most especially.

You didn't rike the Top Gun film?

Or was it the boat raunch?

Rivers of foam?

Projection sky?

China is a clusterfuck that has forsaken the environment (pigs on water....) for $$ at all costs. Whether it is the jumpers at Foxconn, or red rivers, it is an epic disaster.

China is quickly running out of potable water.

The people get fucked and the owners make $$.  Sad.

Chinese Economic Miracle explained (also why white man 'no can compete'):

Say you will build a factory. (10 years ago)

The gov't GIVES you the land.

You build the factory.  No one buys your shoddy goods, so you lower the price (and costs, such as waste disposal), until someone buys, if its below cost to build, so what.

LAND the factory was built on is now yours, and appreciates in value.

Sell factory, buy house in Vancouver.

my vote goes to the company that made dubai ect skyscrapers out of flammable, easily flammable, exteriors.

Holy crap.  that flashing or whatever it was went up like straw or magnesium.  It burned like a mother.

How the hell will all these cities and mega tall skyscrapers in China and the middle east hold up?

How do you take end down when they are falling apart besides the Larry Silverstein way?

Richard Chesler's picture

Well, at least the rebar is made out of real chinese steel.

Manthong's picture

Heh.. heh...  I was about to say ..

- At least they have rebar that looks like it is at about 33 centimeter intersections…

..or is that the same pot metal they used for the rivets on the Titanic?

Automatic Choke's picture

but...but....but....it is really good sand!

edit:  seriously...I was in Moscow in the late '80s, and there were LOTS of concrete buildings that looked like this.  wherever the facade was cracked away on the outside (which was a lot of places, including most corners) the inside was pouring out like this.  i always figured they hadn't added enough potato to the mix.

eforce's picture

I don't see the problem...it's reinforced...

“went up like straw or magnesium.”

Sounds like a “Purple-K”  distribution opportunity to me.

SWRichmond's picture

The towers that shoulder your pride
The words you've written in stone
Sand will cover them, sand will cover you
The streets that suffer your name
Your very flesh and your bones
Sand will cover them, sand will cover you

So put your faith in more than steel
Don't store your treasures up, with moth and rust
Where thieves break in and steal
Pull the fangs from out your heel
We live in but a shadow of the real

Step out from time, see the dust of nations
Step out from time, hear the stars ovation

Saturn will not sleep, until the sand has made us clean
Still we stack our stones and bury what we can
But it all will be undone, and nothing built under the sun
Will ever stand before the endless march of sand

Add some toxic drywall to this death trap, and it should lower Chinese life expectancy rates.

i'm not sure they used potatoes at all; i'm going with rice.  any starch and water.

imo downvotes on wtfrly never linked.

the links were of an evil and incompetent state dept spokesman (i think) revealling himself and his boss as, well, evil and incompetent.  i particularly liked his deconstruction by a beautiful pit bull of a female reporter (for whom, i believe, english was not her first language (imo nor her last)) with his own boss's emails.

p.s. came across an old comment about hillary: democrats know her, they know her support for the war in iraq was insincere.

I wonder if it ever dawned on any of those guys that they shouldn't be standing in a building that was behaving in that way. On the plus side, Krugman must be very proud.

Lore's picture

Why do you mention Krugman?

It's interesting how the focus shifts to China.  Canada has similar trouble, and I'm sure America is not immune. Residential construction standards went to shit ~20 years ago. Newer homes can have lots of expensive issues, some life-threatening.  "LEED Certification" seems to be a sham.  Builders are cutting corners like crazy.  It's like an inside joke to see how much garbage you can conceal behind drywall.

Manthong's picture

..maybe because Krugman loves hurricanes and broken windows.

Look up Bastiat and "boken window fallacy".

Hell, just read this..

Why has no one said anything about the re-bar?  or lack there of.

Oldwood's picture

Rebar is relatively useless without a binding agent such as cement. At least they were consistent. No point spending good money after bad.

BandGap's picture

Watch it again, there is visible rebar. Regardless, it is useless under these circumstances.

What do you think happens in the event of an earthquake? Big fucking sand mound with all sorts of bodies inside. The digging would be easy, I guess.

SilverRhino's picture

Too expensive .... just slap a fake marble tombstone over the top and call it a monument.

That rebar looked like #2 (about 6mm) ... not suitable...
