All Hell Breaks Loose After Trump Says Women Should Be "Punished" For Illegal Abortions

Tyler Durden's picture

Just yesterday, we discussed Donald Trump’s “women problems.”

Although one might fairly question the methodology behind the polls and whether the questions were designed to elicit a certain type of response, it is worth noting that in three separate surveys (NBC, WSJ, and CNN), Trump’s favorability rating with female voters was 27% or less.

Even if one assumes that the polls were inherently biased, there’s probably some truth to the contention that the things Trump has said about women in the past haven’t done anything to help him when it comes to garnering a large percentage of the female vote and may indeed come back to haunt him in a national contest with Hillary Clinton.

Well on Wednesday, in an MSNBC town hall event, Trump was cornered by host Chris Matthews who asked the GOP frontrunner about his position on illegal abortion.

Below, you can find the highlights as compiled by Bloomberg.

  • Host Chris Matthews presses Trump on anti-abortion position, repeatedly asking him, “Should abortion be punished? This is not something you can dodge”
    • “Look, people in certain parts of the Republican Party, conservative Republicans, would say, ‘Yes, it should,’” Trump answers
    • “How about you?” Matthews asks
    • “I would say it’s a very serious problem and it’s a problem we have to decide on. Are you going to send them to jail?” Trump says
    • “I’m asking you,” Matthews says
    • “I am pro-life,” Trump says
    • “How do you actually ban abortion?” Matthews asks
    • “Well, you go back to a position like they had where they would perhaps go to illegal places but we have to ban it,” Trump says
  • Matthews then presses Trump on if he believes there should be punishment for abortion if it were illegal
    • “There has to be some form of punishment,” Trump says
    • “For the woman?” Matthews says; “Yeah,” Trump says, nodding
    • Trump says punishment would “have to be determined”
    • “They’ve set the law and frankly the judges, you’re going to have a very big election coming up for that reason because you have judges where it’s a real tipping point and with the loss of Scalia, who was a very strong conservative, this presidential election is going to be very important,” Trump says
    • “When you say what’s the law, nobody knows what the law is going to be. It depends on who gets elected,” Trump says

Obviously, this was "gotcha" journalism on Matthews' part (once he established that he was referring to illegal abortions he knew he could pin Trump between having to either say women should be punished or that women could break the law with impunity), and as we saw last year with the whole Kurds/Quds Hugh Hewitt debacle, Trump is susceptible to badgering. The other problem here is that it isn't clear that Trump truly believes some of the things he's forced to say as a Republican candidate, which leads to exchanges like that recounted above. "Don't overthink it: Trump doesn't understand the pro-life position because he's not pro-life," a Cruz aid tweeted. Here's Politico with a bit of context:

Trump’s policy idea is a departure from most state abortion restrictions, which don’t impose penalties on the women who get abortions. Typically, any penalties are imposed on the physician who does the procedure.

The anti-abortion movement in recent decades has shied away from the perception that it is “punishing” women for getting abortions. Instead, it has focused on penalties for the physicians who provide them, such as imposing medical or legal restrictions on their practice. In some rare situations, women have faced charges associated with abortions they have attempted on their own.

Having realized this had become a PR fiasco, Trump promptly walked back his comments.

This is a statement released just moments ago, in which the billionaire revises his initial comments, calling the women "victims", and stating it is doctors who should be held legally responsible for performing the illegal act:

If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be legally responsible, not the woman. The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb. My position has not changed - like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions.

But by the time the Trump campaign released that statement it was far too late. The media, women's rights groups, pro-abortion groups, as well as all of Trump's political opponents smelled blood.

"The last person women need to police their health care decisions is someone who sees them not as people, but as ‘fat pigs,’ ‘bimbos’ and ‘disgusting animals,’" Marcy Stech, a spokeswoman for Emily's List, a pro-abortion-rights group said.

Here's the reaction from March for Life:

And from Bernie Sanders:

And here's the Cruz campaign calling Trump a "charlatan":

Expect this soundbite to play on a loop should Trump end up squaring off against Clinton this fall. Speaking of whom:

... As opposed to Obama saying that he would not "Punish" his daughters with going thru their lives with an unwanted child???

Heck, did anyone consider what the child's feelings in this whole thing, or it doesn't matter?

I know it matters to the child... They did not ask to be conceived now did they?

In abortion, life and death are the main actors. The value of LIFE & the direction of DEATH =>

Any woman who consciously chooses to terminate her own innocent unborn child is the definition of a murderess.  Do we have "punishments" for murderers of innocents outside the womb?  Hmmmm... maybe if I wanted to kill someone - I'd first place them in a big sack of briny water, then suck their brains out while they're in the sack.  Voila... I wouldn't be accused of murder!  I'm brilliant!

Let the leftist exploding heads begin! What Trumop said and what you are going to hear him accused of saying are going to be two different things. He said,

"If women have abortions in states that prohibit them, they are going to get prosecuted, (for violating the laws of that state)."

But that isn't what you are going to hear out of the leftists. So let me say it again.

As long as something is deemed illegal by the letter of the applicable law, there has to be punishment. Trump is certainly right on THAT. It's an entirely different question whether or not one should scrap said law. After which no punishment would be there, obviously.  Still, you either have a law and adhere to it or you abolish it. But having a law and ignoring it is anarchy. There is no inbetween. If you do not want women to be punished for abortion (I agree to that), then scrap those laws. As long as you have the laws in place, you have to enforce them. What the hell is so difficult to understand about that?

Oldwood's picture

Realistically, as we have learned with Obama, is that even if a law is passed, it is up to the president to enforce it.

Law enforcement is discretionary...ask Hillary.

excellent question. and roger stone sounded so convincing.

imo abortion and contraception should be legal and subsidized (free).  it is far cheaper and kinder than trying to fix all the social ills of unwanted children and unwanted parents.

parenthood should not be a punishment for sex.

Now we can argue about abortion. Should have seen this coming ... a mile away.

Hahaha, and so the curtain falls for "Donnie-the-Wig," a first class idiot who has no respect for the Law, human rights and who's 'fan base' only constitutes of the dumbest of rednecks (plenty of those here on ZH).

Building a wall at the Mexican border and make Mexicans pay for it? Waterboarding and torturing anyone suspected of terrorism? Killing relatives of terrorists? Punishing women for getting an abortion?

"The Donald" is nothing more than an extremely dangerous idiot and a charlatan, who's ego is probably worth 10 billion, but his business empire and presidential suitability probably a lot less.

That said, of course the alternatives (email expert Hillary with her destructive Middle East policy and Commie Bernie) aren't much to cheer for either, so either way: America and the world is FUCKED! Royally FUCKED, but hey, it can always be worse with Donnie the Clown as POTUS.

Oh yeah, go ahead with the minuses, hehe! Think about it: every minus you give me you should really be giving yourself for being so stupid for falling for a conman! Here is 'foreign policy expert' Donnie Trump on nuclear proliferation: "sure, let Saudi Arabia get a nuclear weapon, it's gonna happen anyway." Hahahaha! What an reckless idiot!

mtl4's picture

I know Trump was trying to appeal to the hard right and he certainly has no problem speaking his mind but the issue at hand is not abortion itself at all.  The real issue no matter what side you stand on is the fact that yet again the state is telling you what you can and can't do.  Will people still use drugs and drink regardless of whether it's illegal or not, you bet! So you can't argue for the right to bear arms and be left alone without also allowing the right to be left alone on other issues too or you then become a hypocrite. This doesn't mean in the least we all have to agee with everyone else's view, but imposing your view on others no matter what conviction you think you have in doing so (religious or otherwise) never ends well.  When the state decides what's in the best interests of everyone by slowly erroding all freedoms that has traditonally sown the seeds of revolution.

SWRichmond's picture

Divide and conquer.  "Your vote matters!"

All politics is theater designed to make you think that you can improve your life, achieve meaningful change, and remold the world in your own image through the magic of "voting".  Whomever you "vote" for will simply continue to take your stuff, send your kids off to war to be killed or worse, enrich themselves and their cronies while impoverishing you.

Government ultimately always is about compliance and control, to support taxation / looting / killing.

Cloud9.5's picture

Relax, the people who have their panties in a wad about this would not have voted for Trump anyway.   They are but a tiny loud faction that up until this moment had been able to shout down any opposition.

Raden's picture

Parenthood MOST DEFINITLEY IS the punishment for people who have SEX without CONTRACEPTIVES, seriously Pill or Condom it's NOT the end of the world, perhaps if the FSA didn't obsolve mothers of the responsibility of both paying for and caring for a child then women would perhaps be a bit more reticient spreading there legs for any old dickhead drop kick that comes along. I'm not negating the role of the father here, perhaps the punishment for abandoning your child's care should be that you lose the ability to make more of them .... I suspect Men would be far more cool headed and responsible if they knew they were going to loose the crown jewel's if they are not carefull

NidStyles's picture

Incorrect, that sort of parenthood is punishment for the children, not the parents. The children are the ones getting screwed in that situation.

Welfarism of all kinds should end though.

TuPhat's picture

Nid, killing the child is not punishment in your way of thinking?  Allowing them to live is punishment?  I think perhaps you deserve to not be punished Nid.

If #blacklivesmattered "they" aka the Black Community, would not be committing wholesale mass abortion of unwanted children.
Now, we came to the conundrum.   Should we encourage abortion for humanity's very existence and viola, we're into Eugenics.   And so it goes.

And so it goes from The Donald looking to be a Libertarian dream (or whatever tag we wan to paint on his blank canvas) to an authoritarian figure having transgressed into political nightmare land.  He just lost a bazillion votes.  And as the sun sets upon ....yadda yadda yadda
That being said, he did say "illegal" abortions as in "breaking the law" not as in abortions.  Also then appeared to say that it must be illegal.  2 different points of consideration.

Which in spite of all the politics, is a topic for each person to confront upon their own terms with their Higher Power .... whatever that may be.
Should the Feds have anything to do with it?

The Constitution would suggest that it's a consideration reserved to the individual and the states.  "Baddonald"

fleur de lis's picture

This is all hysterics. He said something awkward to say the least, but he can't just make up laws anyway. It is amazing how easily entire groups go ballistic instead of refuting what he said.

Trump really needs to use more measured words especially when he comments on third rail issues, or he will not be heard. When he does this kind of thing he is feeding his adversaries. The media snaps and goes into a wild hyena feeding frenzy and holds the whole country hostage until they wear us all down.

Furthermore nobody gets punished in this country, i.e. our would-be Presidenta. Anything involving lawyers, doctors, patients, and punishment would require endless researchers and committees.

jeff montanye's picture

nobody gets punished?  you mean nobody rich and connected gets punished.  martha stewart went to jail as did paris hilton.

chelsea nee bradley manning was punished severely and is still being punished.

the banksters and the mossad/zionist/false flag terrorists, now they go free to the banquet table and the harem quarters.

fleur de lis's picture

I agree with your clarification. However, women would not be punished, and everyone knows it. But we still have to tolerate this Kabuki melodrama like it's a reality and the law is in place, good to go.

Manning was indeed punished but only because he got to close to the warmongers. If one of their friends did the same or worse, there would be no punishment.

Stewart went to jail but probably for additional reasons we don't know. Stupid Hilton got a smack down but it was a circus.

Yes the central bankers and assorted .gov psychopaths get off the hook all the time, that's standard procedure.

Also remember lots of other street level criminals get off the hook, illegals ignore our laws and trash our nation because they think we owe them everything, and they know they will get off the hook. Free lawyers. Standard procedure.

Even violent illegals are wasting our taxes in jails because they don't want to be repatriated. They know what's good for them and they are quite comfortable in the slammer. Lots of like-minded friends, too. So they prefer to remain on the hook, and our officials comply.

Our laws and social structures are eroding at every level thanks to the decay in our legal, academic, government, media, etc., institutions. There is neither respect for laws nor fear of lawlessness.

Oh shit, this is it, this is truly the one, he's going down this time!!!!!

Oh wait, thats what the Pundits said the last hundred times he spoke out of line...

What he said was, if you break the law there should be a punishment for it, even women, OMG!

fleur de lis's picture

The hysteria is not about what he said. It's about how the media, various groups, other candidates, etc., have seized upon it, turned it upside down, and turned it into a crisis.

So as to avoid that, it would be better if he measured his words about third rail issues. The media is known for distorting things, so there is no point in his feeding them. They are out to destroy him so why assist them.

Tarzan's picture

The hysteria has always been what he says, and in every case they declared Trump's end.  It is his appeal, that he does not "measure his words", AKA being politically correct!

Hell with that, sink or swim it's high time people spoke there mind without the fear men!

"The hysteria" is Astro Turf, Tump's appeal is grass roots!  If he measured his words he would loose support.
