Leaked Facebook Training Manual Confirms Allegations Of Conservative News Suppression

Tyler Durden's picture

It's turning out to be a bad week for Facebook. As we reported earlier, it was learned that Facebook's news feed routinely suppressed conservative news. Now, Recode is reporting that Facebook training documents given to its editors have leaked, and they reveal that editors select trending news topics from just ten editors, only one of which could be considered right-wing.

From Recode

A report published in the Guardian today includes a training document for Facebook editors that outlines how they should curate the "trending" headlines tool.

Instructions in the documents appear to contradict Facebook's earlier denials of a Gizmodo article that said Facebook editors directly inserted headlines into the trending news widget. It also contradicts what Facebook told Recode last summer.

The guidelines obtained by the Guardian additionally show that editors must select trending news topics from a list of 10 "trusted" news sources that include the New York Times, BBC News, CNN and Fox News. This is likely to make people who are upset about alleged anti-conservative bias that Gizmodo reported on even madder; Fox News looks like the only right-wing outlet on the list.

In turn, Facebook provided the Guardian with a much longer list of approved publications that includes conservative websites like the Daily Caller and the Drudge Report. The Guardian notes that the former Facebook editors it spoke to disagreed with the allegations of anti-conservative leanings at Facebook.

In a response to the Guardian from Facebook VP of global operations Justin Osofsky, the company did not appear to contest the charge that its editors choose which headlines to use in the trending section.

Representatives for Facebook could not immediately be reached for comment.

Now would be a good time for the company to simply admit to its shady practices, and implement a correction before things continue to deteriorate for darling of social media.

I disagree with it being a good idea for them to just come clean and stop doing it. I hope they not only keep doing it, but double down on it. Whatever it takes to get intelligent people to stop using Facebook is a good thing.

froze25's picture

Better written, "Facebook" will only have stories trend if they origin of the story is from a news outlet that is a multinational corporation not a small outlet with a nationalistic point of view.

"must select trending news topics from a list of 10 "trusted" news sources that include the New York Times, BBC News, CNN and Fox News."

Um, guys, I just scanned that whole leaked document and could not find a mention of this or of these "trusted" news sources.

Maybe I missed it, but I don't see it.  Could somebody please check me on this?

EuroPox's picture

The whole document is 21 pages and you can find it here:

You are right that the 9 page document reproduced here does not include that detail but the 21 page doc does.

Fucking Fakebook and Suckerberg!

I think Tyler should update his link to the full 21-page report; because the 9-page version makes this story look like a nothingburger.

Lurk Skywatcher's picture

This story is a nothingburger.

"News" outlets are under no legal obligation to report truth or accurate facts, so whats wrong with Facebook cherry picking which steaming pile of bullshit to stream?

Fuck it is so easy to misdirect idiots these days... people have been so preconditioned that a simple press on the right nerve will send the masses flailing and indignant in the exact oposite direction to the one they think they are heading.

Paveway IV's picture

I agree, Lurk.

Since I honestly didn't know what the fuck a 'trending story' was on Facebook, I had to go to the site to look. It automatically brings up my page (bastards). Yes, I have an unused Facebook account because I was forced to make one for some reason years ago. (And don't you fuckers try to friend me - nobody on Facebook is my 'friend') I also get a diarrhea-colored bar at the top imploring me for a phone number to 'help secure my account'. Fuck you, NSA - Look it up yourselves.

So there's this stupid-assed sidebar that just says Trending with little icons for Top Trending, Politics, Science and Technology, Sports and Entertainment. Apparently little more than a MSM spew aggregator for, I guess, stories that other brain-dead Facebook users linked to. Which brings to mind the biggest question of all:

What fucking mental midget would actually rely on 'trends' in Facebook users' posts for their source of news?

Gosh, Facebook promotes 'liberal' MSM spew? WHO IN GOD'S NAME GIVES A FUCK?? What, so the twenty or so people on earth that use the sidebar for news might be exposed to MSM bias? I would love to see  - of all the lame-assed people left on Facebook - how many actually click on a story on that sidebar. Do I really care if those microcephalic Facebook users are somehow influenced by Facebook's liberal bias? Oh fucking COME ON...

If any Facebook user actually attaches any importance to what trends on Facebook, then they most certainly don't have the mental capacity to understand Facebook's censorship and bias.

Curate away, you useless Facebook fuckers. The MSM has ALREADY been relegated to the scrap-heap of history. Aggregating and ranking links to their brain-dead content makes you curator of nothing but the popularity of individual scrap-heap bits. Rearrange them all you want, and rest easy in your bubble of imaginary relevance.

No ZeroHedge either.Maybe the Comments section scares them off.

It's "editorializing via inheritance" or "argument from authority". The news outlets in quesiton are almost certainly all Project Mockingbird assets.

Sometimes the comments section around here is pretty scary.

I had a look and I can't find it either.

"Intelligent people" don't formulate their positions on various important topics from the media outlets linked to by Faceplant. What Faceplant is allegedly doing is selectively manipulating the opinions of your average moron by controlling what he or she sees on a daily basis. And, unfortunately, those morons vote.

"And, unfortunately, those morons vote."

Well, Obama got elected twice somehow. But then there's that GOP we were in the bag all along meme.

This is such crap. You'all sound like Rush and Fox trying to get  NPR closed down.

I mean poor Rush and Fox with their committment to fair and balanced.

That failed and rightly so.

FB is one of several opportunities to easily broadcast Zerohedge and other sources to 'just folks'.
I HOPE the NSA reads my stuff. I provide ZH links to 1500 friends and 125 followers/activists.
I do not read or post about what I ate for lunch. I have learned more on FB from freinds comments than anywhere else recently.., having been banned from several forums for politically incorrect views.

Dormouse's picture

Zuckerface is a private company and under no public obligation to provide "fair and balanced" news. That's not why you should hate Zuckerface, you should hate it because you're doing the data mining for the CIA for free; freely and willingly telling them all about yourselves. That's why you should fuck Zuckerface.

Welcome to new version of democratic socialism - printing/corporate welfare is for everyone - but only for those who we will pick. Free speech is also for everyone unless you disagree with what is happening. Everyone is earning their share in this crony capitalism unless they are banks and big corporations. The USSA is welcoming you comrades!

Facebook (Google) is a neocon collections and counter-intelligence operation.

At what point do the designs of single corporations, industries and their elite shareholders become a national security issue for the nation state and its citizens?

This is what TPP, TTIP, TISA, etc are - a insulating constitution for corporate apologists.

PS - Fox News is no more "conservative" or "right-wing" than Disney and the NYT.

Guideline #14: Make sure the "news" story is written by a tribe member

firstdivision's picture

A) Facebook is a private company so they can choose what news they want shown (which if you're a Libertarian, you cannot argue that they don't have the right)

B) If you're getting your 'news' from Facebook, you deserve to slapped upside the head for being an idiot.
