The Biggest Threat To Jeff Bezos And Amazon: President Trump

Tyler Durden's picture

Donald Trump is unhappy with Jeff Bezos, and it now appears that the biggest threat to Amazon isn't revenue growth and profit margins, it's a potential future President Trump who may deem AMZN to be anti-competitive and force it to break apart.

In an interview with Sean Hannity, Trump went off on the Amazon founder, accusing Bezos of having The Washington Post (which Bezos purchased for $250 million in late 2013) run political hit pieces on Trump, apparently to stop Trump from going after Bezos for having a monopoly.

"Every hour we're getting calls from reporters from The Washington Post asking ridiculous questions. This is owned as a toy by Jeff Bezos who controls Amazon. Amazon is getting away with murder tax wise. He's using the Washington Post for power so that the politicians in Washington don't tax Amazon the way they should be taxed. He's worried about me, he thinks I would go after him for anti-trust. He's got a huge anti-trust problem because he's controlling so much. Amazon is controlling so much of what they're doing."

The bad blood between the two billionaires is nothing new, and started in 2015 when in response to Trump tweets that "The @washingtonpost, which loses a fortune, is owned by @JeffBezos for purposes of keeping taxes down at his no profit company, @amazon", Bezos responded with a proposal to shoot Trump into space.

In this specific case, the Donald's irritation stems from the fact that The Washington Post is putting together a team that will solely focus on Trump and all aspects of his life. "We're going to do a book, we're doing articles about every phase of his life." said Bob Woodward, of Watergate fame. Woodward went on to call Trump's real estate deals in New York "more complex than the CIA."

According to Woodward, Bezos has urged the Post to run as many stories as possible about all the presidential candidates so that voters can't say they were uninformed when they select the next president.

"He said, 'Look, the job at the Washington Post has to be tell us everything about who the eventual nominee will be in both parties. A 15-part, 16-part series, 20-part series, we want to look at every part of their lives. And we're never going to get the whole story, of course, but we can get the best attainable."

While we are in agreement with Woodward in theory, in practice, there is a problem: as the recent Facebook fiasco has once again vividly demonstrated, the mainstream media proves again and again that they will suppress what they feel is unimportant, and flat out leave pieces out of a story in order to protect people they support. Trump will no doubt take this in stride, and presumably grow even stronger from it, as he has with every other botched attempt at getting in the way of a Trump presidency.

Furthermore, by the time the book is done, Trump will either be president or be a political cadaver. At which point we hope Bob Woodward will focus his investigatorial skills on the only person who could be president at the time: Hillary Clinton, who oddly enough, has gotten a blank check from the pro-administration WaPo over the past year...

We all know that Trumps real-estate deals are nowhere near as complex as the criminal activity the CIA has been engaged in. Hence the huge support for Trump.

I was a little surprised that Hannity was such a suck up to Trump.  Thought he was more "mainstream" Republican.

Publicus_Reanimated's picture

Living under a rock?  The "mainstream" propelled Trump to the nomination.  Perhaps you meant "establishment", which is out of touch with the "mainstream".

Not today.  Today's progressive CEO's care more about transgenders using bathrooms than customer flow.

Nothing Ever Happens's picture

I thought transgender bathroom use was all about customer flow.

Yep, the "transgender bathroom" issue is nothing but a distraction.

Remember a few years ago when gay marriage was all the debate on Facebook, etc. That's because a Monsanto bill (legally not allowing them to be sued) was quietly being passed through Congress. Damn, we're so easily manipuated. Get people focused on emotional nonsense while the real crime is being perpetrated.

So what big crime is going down that they need this bathroom issue distraction? (Besides all the election bullshit... they don't need a distraction from that, since elections are the distraction... something bigger.)

Once again Trump hits the nail on its head.  The "media" has become a weapon agaianst anything non corporate.

Gee, wonder if Trump is upset because Bezos is spending 10's of millions to fight his candidacy.

Well out of the top 4 highest campaign raising candidates, three of them are remain.

Don't forget, Trump will be taking outside money for the general election as opposed to financing most of the primary election with a loan to himself. That means, any money left over after the general election, he can use to pay himself back. Smart eh?

Kind of like borrowing big to buy a casino or hotel, running up huge debts while operating it. cashing out and then taking the casino or hotel into bankruptcy. Same formula many wealthy use. Use other peoples money to finance, get yours, then leave the empty bag for someone else to hold. That's how they can walk away from failures and still end up rich.

With that stance, Trump now has the undying loyalty of every single member of every Chamber of Commerce in America and their uncles and aunts and cousins.  Trump is brilliant.

Finally...somebody taking down these arrogant billionaires like Bezo who manipulate the news for their personal gain! GO TRUMP!

Next Buffet!

Citium's picture

But Trump is an arrogant billionaire...

venturen's picture

yes...but does he own a newspaper as Buffet and Bezo do? Donald does it the old fashioned way

Ghost of PartysOver's picture

Of all the arrogant billionaire out there, Trump is the only that can "somewhat" relate to the Main street guy.  So you have to give him that.

(Oh, I do have serious issues with Trump on Eminent Domain and the Pee Gate so I am not a blind loyalist)

KCMLO's picture

how so?  He thinks that I, a working class guy, gives a flying fuck that "China is laughing at us."  I don't care.  Trump has an odd fixation on making sure other people/countries aren't "laughing at us" he says it all the time... guess what fucker?  I don't live in China so I don't give a shit about it, I live in the US (for now).

You're talking about a person that has been worth millions from the time he was born.  Sure, he's worked to make them billions, but he hasn't a damn clue what it's like to work 2 jobs and watch the paycheck disappear.  He's never been anywhere near that.

froze25's picture

I care, they laugh because we are suckers and they know it. They know our people can be bought and bad deals are made because our "leaders" have zero experience in business negotiations and only care about lining their pockets not supporting the population as a whole. Trump is a Nationalist, the rest (most)are Globalist (Traitors).

Handful of Dust's picture

It's odd to see Bezos risk his success with Amazon on this fight against Trump; when you hate trump, you hate the American middle class.

This may backfire on Bezos in a way he does not expect.

Dormouse's picture

Donald J Trump is a bulldozer. It ends poorly for anyone who attacks him and you sure don't want to draw his attention. Short Amazon.

KCMLO is a fucking douche - you went over the end of dumb on this one.  You know WHY your paycheck sucks balls?  Because people like you cant put 2 & 2 together and see how the dollar dying and jobs flying out of the country makes your life suck..

KCMLO's picture

You assume I am voting for Clinton or Sanders... you are incorrect.  Besides, pointing out that Trump is "the lesser of two evils" just underscores how incredibly awful he really is.  His candidacy would be a complete joke in most other election lineups but we've had such idiotic and corrupt leaders for so long now that HE somehow seems viable... he's the apotheosis of stupidity in politics, not the cure for it.

TheMeatTrapper's picture

So, which candidate does?

If you had the ability to reason, you'd understand that none of them do, so your point is moot. The question you should be asking yourself is "which candidate stands to be the one to rectify the issues that cause such a state of affiars?"

Canadian Renegade's picture

Accuse Trump of being out of touch. You're out of touch. A Chinese family can sell a shitty apartment condo in Beijing and use the proceeds to buy a 800k Mcmansion in Alberta driving up real estate costs out of reach for most locals.

If it wasn't for over regulation and taxation in the west and us not charging duties on all their products maybe our economy would be robust enough and theirs weaker that these situations wouldn't occur.

Of course they are laughing.

"Dicks also fuck assholes Chuck" - America World Police. Trump the Dick (who I support) Congress/Senate = Asshole(s)(6% approval rating) need a good fucking.

Fair Trade deals is not touchy feely stuff.  That will have a direct impact on Main Street.  Illegal immigration is not touchy feely stuff.  That has a direct impact on Main Street wages.  Unless of course you believe the the Law of Supply and Demand applies to all things economic EXCEPT Labor.

I've never fully figured out why Amazon is allowed to skate on tax collection.  A source of revenue that big being overlooked by .GOV?  Fuhgetaboudit.

My tinfoil hat says something is amiss here.

OldTrooper's picture

Probably the same reason that Sears never had to collect sales tax on their out-of-state mail order business - for over 100 years.  States were prohibited from taxing interstate commerce for a long time.  That is starting to change, all in the interest of 'fairness' of course.  Just another way for the insatiable, money-grubbing state to steal from us.  Thousands of businesses are affected - not just Amazon - and the actual tax, plus the costs of compliance, will be passed to the purchaser (you, me, etc.).

It will be much harder and proportionally more expensive for smaller online retailers to comply with interstate sales tax collection.  Amazon will have no problem complying.  Also, it would give any .gov thug a reason to probe and harass any business they didn't like (use your imagination).  Compliance will be so complicated that any targeted business is doomed.  I'm in no hurry to enjoy the benefits of interstate sales tax.

KCMLO's picture

Awww Donny... welcome to public life.

Btw, if you're really worried about the authenticity of WaPo, maybe don't sit down with them for an hour-long interview in which you bombed so badly your campaign should be a walking dumpster fire by now.

KCMLO's picture

Downvoters... listen and read the transcript of that interview if you want to know "detailed" Trump plans... as in... there are no details because he doesn't know them, and he's a moron.

monk27's picture

And you are supposed to be the "smart" one ? OK, whatever...

Anything you say about the Donald, whether true or not, needs to be measured against that psychopathic, war mongering enabler.  Do you want 4 more years of Bush/Obama or something different?
