British General Says A Nuclear War With Russia In 2017 Is "Entirely Plausible"

Tyler Durden's picture

With tensions between Russia and the West at post-cold war highs, a former NATO deputy military chief is now saying that a nuclear war with Russia over the Baltic nations in 2017 is "entirely plausible" according to RT.

General Sir Richard Shirreff, from Britain, served at the second highest NATO military office in Europe between 2011 and 2014, has written a fictional book about a nuclear war with Russia in 2017 triggered by a dispute of the Baltic nations. While the story is indeed fictional, Shirreff said the story is based on an "entirely plausible" scenario.

The scenario in which Shirreff lays out is that Russia would first occupy Ukraine to secure a land route to Crimea and then invade the three Baltic nations, all of which are members of NATO. Shirreff claims Russia will do this because it feels that NATO is perceived as weak, and Russia will be oppositional about what it sees as the alliance's attempt to encircle it.

"We need to judge President Putin by his deeds not his words. He has invaded Georgia, he has invaded the Crimea, he has invaded Ukraine. He has used force and got away with it" the retired General told BBC.

The general's thesis is hard to disagree with of course. As NATO has recently moved 4,000 troops to Russia's border, followed by the US turning on the missile defense system and immediately wargaming in Romania, the scene has already been set for such an occurrence. Russia has responded to NATO's troop positioning by creating new military divisions of their own, and deploying them to the borders

Even more to Shirreff's point, as we noted a few days ago, Russia has already hinted at nuclear war in response to the US activation of the missile defense system in Romania. Last fall, as Russia grew concerned that the defense system would take away its first mover advantage of being able to strike in the event of a war, Russian security officials hinted that one miltary response would be to use a nuclear-armed drone submarine that would be detonated in coastal waters, causing a radioactive tsunami to flood and contaminate seaside cities. The purpose would be to "defeat important economic objects of an enemy in coastal zones, bringing guaranteed and unacceptable losses on the country's territory by forming a wide area of radioactive contamination incompatible with conducting military, economic or any other activities there for a long period of time." In fact, Russian commentator Konstantin Bogdanov wrote that the antimissile sites in Eastern Europe might even accelerate the slippery slope to nuclear war in a crisis.

All that's left is a catalyst, something the US is apparently trying desperately to deliver as it continues to fly spy planes over Russia's border, and encircles Russia with troops. If ever either side were to make one small mistake in how they choose to interact with each other, it could very well lead to nuclear war.

The bi-partisan oligarchic elites in the US are pushing forward step by step to another great war.

They will bring suffering and death to many more millions before they get their richly deserved punishment.

They will likely kill many of us but they will be destroyed by their own madness.

Religious nuts really are sick mother fuckers.

If this is all part of gods plan, god is a sick mother fucker as well.

Religosity as you have demonstrated with your views is a sickness of the mind.

I wonder if there are any universes out there created by a benevolent god whereby all creatures are herbivores, live in peace and hapiness and do not fear enslavement, torture, imprisonment, starvation or illness.

If an all powerful god could create such a world, why hasn't it been done in our universe.

BLAH, BLAH, free will, BLAH fucking BLAH.

General Kook Richard Shirreff is clearly quite sick in the head. I have to believe he was chronically masturbating as he wrote each page of his so-called 'book', the war porn equivalent of, as Zappa would put it, "some tacky little pamphlet in your daddy's bottom drawer." I'm sure that war fags like Jonm McCain, Lindsey Graham, General Anders Phagg Rasmussen, and General Philatio Manlove each have an autographed, jizz-stained copy.

His 'plausible scenario' is entirely implausible. Nobody in their right mind would invade the Baltics, which is why only NATO has done so. They are the geopolitical equivalents of three sprat canning plants where nothing happens and nobody wants to be, not even Syrian Refugees®. Based on demographic trends, not even the Latvians want Latvia.

General Kook Shirreff goes on to say that, "we need to judge President Putin by his deeds not his words," so let's do that.

"He has invaded Georgia." Wrong. Russia responded after Georgia attacked and killed Russian peacekeeping forces and, after driving the Georgian military and their American 'advisors' back to Tbilisi, promptly withdrew.

"He has invaded the Crimea." Absurd fantasy. Catherine the Great invaded Crimea before George Washington was elected US president. Crimea was never legally a part of the Ukraine. Krushchev, with no legal basis for doing so, placed Crimea under administrative control of the Ukrainian SSR. When the Ukraine voted to leave the USSR, it could only legally do so with the same borders it had when it entered the USSR (this law applied to every republic of the USSR). When Sevastopol (a Russian city with special status distinct from Crimea) and the Crimean Republic first tried to separate from the Ukraine (I believe in 1994), the Ukrainian government forcibly prevented them from doing so. From a purely legal standpoint, for the Ukraine to claim any administrative control over Crimea, it must concede that it never legally left the USSR.

"He has invaded Ukraine." Still trying to peddle this tired old bromide? After two years without a single shred of photographic evidence? Still believe the Earth is flat, General? As for trying to "secure a land route to Crimea," which the Russians could do in a single day if it were their intent, why have they chosen instead the more time consuming and expensive alternative of bridging the Kerch Strait?

General Kook Richard Shirreff is insane, as is anyone that first placed him in a position of authority and anyone who gives credence to his bombastic ravings.

That's not the point of articles like these.  Its to generate public support for MASSIVE additional amounts of spending to combat the threat.

What is the kneejerk reaction from the zombies every time a "general" or some other warmongering asshole claims that (Russia, China, fill in the blank)  is a "threat".

The kneejerk reaction is to support more defense spending.  Which is EXACTLY what the MDC wants.

We get almost a daily "threat" posted on zerohedge.  How many times do we have to hear about how Russias jet came close to our ubiquitous military?  Its not news.  Its not important except to generate support for more defense spending.

What I don't understand is why zerohedge finds it so import to generate support for more defense spending.

Of course, Shirreff is insane. Another thought would be Hillary Clinton. Can you picture that b!tch having a menapausal hot-flash while she had her finger on the red button in the suitcase?

I guess that's why they say that Nuclear War is Mutually Assured Destruction [MAD].

Mr. Asteriod - my take on "god", "religion",  "life", et. al., is that we're supposed to have "experiences" & "learn & grow". Nice, but wow does a lot of shit happn in the process and you wonder about the process being so aggregious. Frankly, I think the sentiment in this 80's Depeche Mode song is quite apt:

Girl of sixteen, whole life ahead of her Slashed her wrists, bored with life Didn't succeed, thank the Lord For small mercies Fighting back the tears, mother reads the note again Sixteen candles burn in her mind She takes the blame, it's always the same She goes down on her knees and prays I don't want to start any blasphemous rumours But I think that God's got a sick sense of humor And when I die I expect to find Him laughing Girl of eighteen, fell in love with everything Found new life in Jesus Christ Hit by a car, ended up On a life support machine Summer's day, as she passed away Birds were singing in the summer sky Then came the rain, and once again A tear fell from her mother's eye I don't want to start any blasphemous rumours But I think that God's got a sick sense of humor And when I die I expect to find Him laughing

They will be underground forever. At least they are buried, in a manner, living in the ground like the rats they are.

CPL's picture

They aren't bunkers, they are air tight tombs.

After the space monkeys and lab lizards pull the trigger it will be a world where the living will envy the dead.  And far in the future someone will eventually find all of that stuff because eventually all tombs are raided for whatever is in them (gold, silver, copper, DNA).  Stories will be made up of how god/gods/whatever were angry and smote the world with a judgement of fire.

They'll find ancient tablets left over and well preserved in these vaults about a place named Bablyon and attribute where the nuclear strike point was for that city, even though it could be any city.   Stories, mostly all third hand and many generations away from the actual incident will be scraped together and they'll bind all of the wife's tales into a single tomb.  Eventually that tomb will circulate and men will get very rich off if it.  They will claim that god speaks to them and the technology they have was a blessing from god.  They will rule as tyrants and like all tyrants cause their own down fall mainly because blind, retarded ambition never marries intelligence.

Stop me if this story sounds's been done a couple of times in the past usually when the gold pick up is overdue.  If it all sounds like a scam to get people to get someone else shiny rocks.  It is.

1033eruth's picture

Massive thumbs down to you and the other yoyos that think our out of control defense spending is what keeps Russia in check.

Putin is a smart man, not beholding to the donations of special interests.  He's not a puppet like our elected are dancing about on their strings (PAC donations).

He actually acts in the best (LONG TERM) interest of his country rather than constantly at the beck and call of whoever is dangling reelection money in front of his face.

And it would be a gross exaggeration to say we have bases ringing Russia.  Do I have to geographically spell it out to you?  The kind of waste we have in defense is NOT something to be proud of.

hansg's picture

God help us if those who are in charge of defending us really see Russia as they apparently do. In the meantime, all I see is a nation responding to ever-mounting aggression from the US and its allies. These men are apparently so eager for a nuclear war, it's sickening.

On behalf of the people of Europe: go play your games somewhere else. Reduce your own nation to radioactive rubble if you want to, but leave us out of it.

Last I looked ICBMs weren't range restricted to Europe, and it's nailed on Putin has a few with Washington's zip code already programmed in for first retaliatory. There's probably half a dozen subs of the Russian variety in deep water off the Eastern Seaboard on permanent alert.

What is truly scary is the complete ignorance of the sheeple (US and Europe) as to what McShitstainMcCain and his cohorts are up to.

Ghordius's picture

A slave has chains to break. A vassal...

... is not a slave, however this word is very recently used. A vassal means an ally, first, and a mostly independent and armed one second... but with a pledge to follow his military alliance leader when this one calls for the common defense

Recently, Sweden has been very vocal about Russia. Up to the point of the resurfacing debate if Sweden ought to join NATO

Of course Moscow has been very vocal on that, too, and is pointing to a whole lot of measures it could use in retaliation to that

meanwhile, what Moscow is really doing is... business as usual. both in terms of "The Great Game" and in terms of Russian MIC boost and search for new customers for Russian military hardware deliveries

the term used for this kind of stance was "rattling the sabers". the whole Cold War was just one humungous spell of this kind of behaviour

the scariest part of all this is still the same as in the Cold War: someone believieving that "The World has to end soon, and any push for it is a welcome action" and doing that action. interestingly, it's usually some American, then this belief is practically non-existent in the rest of the world

well what about this:

A high ranking North Korean official, Hwang Pyong-So, recently declared:

“If the US imperialists threaten our sovereignty and survival… our troops will fire our nuclear-armed rockets at the White House and the Pentagon – the sources of all evil.”

or this:

“Iranian military documents describe such a scenario — including a recently translated Iranian military textbook that endorses nuclear EMP attack against the United States,” he wrote.

A knowledgable source said that the textbook discusses an EMP attack on America in 20 different places.
