Peak Idiocracy? Students Demand End To Midterms, Abolish Grades 'C' Or Below

Tyler Durden's picture

Students on liberal arts college campuses may have just jumped the shark for special-snowflakedness. As The Week reports, students at Oberlin College are asking the school to put academics on the back burner so they can better turn their attention to activism.

More than 1,300 students at the Midwestern liberal arts college have now signed a petition asking that the college get rid of any grade below a C for the semester, and some students are requesting alternatives to the standard written midterm examination, such as a conversation with a professor in lieu of an essay.

The students say that between their activism work and their heavy course load, finding success within the usual grading parameters is increasingly difficult. "A lot of us worked alongside community members in Cleveland who were protesting," Megan Bautista, a co-liaison in Oberlin's student government, said, referring to the protests surrounding the shooting death of 12-year-old Tamir Rice by a police officer in 2014. "But we needed to organize on campus as well — it wasn't sustainable to keep driving 40 minutes away. A lot of us started suffering academically."

The student activists' request doesn't come without precedence: In the 1970s, Oberlin adjusted its grading to accommodate student activists protesting the Vietnam War and the Kent State shootings, The New Yorker reports. But current students contend that same luxury was not granted to them even though the recent Rice protests were over a police shooting that took place just 30 miles east of campus.

"You know, we're paying for a service. We're paying for our attendance here. We need to be able to get what we need in a way that we can actually consume it," student Zakiya Acey told The New Yorker. "Because I'm dealing with having been arrested on campus, or having to deal with the things that my family are going through because of larger systems — having to deal with all of that, I can't produce the work that they want me to do. But I understand the material, and I can give it to you in different ways."

As The Burning Platform's Jim Quinn so eloquently put it...

These morons are too funny. Idiocracy in all its glory. It ain’t a movie anymore. It’s the real thing on college campuses across the U.S.

In conclusion, as we noted previously, there are no safe space and no matter where you go in life, someone will be there to offend you.

111315-RickMcKee2

Maybe it’s a joke you overheard on vacation, a spat at the office, or a difference of opinion with someone in line at the grocery store. Inevitably, someone will offend you and your values. If you cannot handle that without losing control of your emotions and reverting back to your “safe space” away from the harmful words of others, then you’re best to just stay put at home. Remember, though: if people in the outside world scare you, people on the internet will downright terrify you. It’s probably best to just accept these harsh realities of life and go out into the world prepared to confront them wherever they may be waiting.

Then it'll become illegal not to hire a functional idiot from Oberlin because to decline him a paycheck would hurt his feelings
Are we there yet, Senator Blutarski?

I think I will author the curriculum for them for a BoC (Bachelor of Crap)…

they can do the others so that the little twerps can do minors in Moron and Jackass.

Then at least they will be fully credentialed to become apprentice fluffers in LA.

You're not paying to be there, you're taking on debt to be there. There is a huge difference.

Maybe these students should be told to go to class and learn something instead of going out and telling others what they should think.  College students believe they are very smart but it will take a decade or two before they realize they were just ignorant sheep back in their college days.

These obnoxious boors are illiterate, ill-read, ill-mannered brats of slovenly appearance and loud demeanor. Which means that they will never get hired anywhere except possible a .gov office, and the rest of them will end up on welfare.

Oberlin has deteriorated into a welfare queen factory. It needs to be closed and the land sold. It is just a complete waste of taxes at this point.

I paid my own hard earned money for an accredited college.  And what I paid for was the quality assurance process that you wish to be able to circumvent.  So by being given a free ride, you are taking money out of MY pocket by making that quality assurance meaningless.  Get your fucking hands out of my pocket.  Credits are for people who can pass the actual fucking test.

How about you try this:  Rather than write a resume, you should write a "terms and conditions of my interview" letter.  Don't send it to my company, though.

Do you want your health care "professional" only knowing 50 or 60% of the material?  Or your airline pilot?  Its fine if you are going to paint clouds in the park---but that occupation isn't going to pay your bills.  Quit your bitching and get to work you snivelling babies.  You need to fluff the social security fund for me!!

The smart ones looked at the cost of tuition and compared it with the wages and job vacancies on the other side ...
The "other" ones went to uni.

Oberlin has deteriorated into a welfare queen factory.

Ah, but it is far more than that. As one of the most expensive universities in the US, it is both an efficient drainer of trust funds and a prodigious generator of student loan debt. As an added bonus, it is a highly specialized provider of playpens for post-teenage adolescents with tangential connections to reality.

It is just a complete waste of taxes at this point.

Please, do not worry. As a private, not-for-profit institution, it is a sparkling example of the educational opportunities provided by The American Free Market Democratic System of Freedom®. Not a dime of tax money goes to it*.

*unless, of course, you count things like Pell Grants, but hey, it's not going to them directly, right?

Without even bothering to read the entire article here's how this plays out if Sanders were to be elected:

College becomes free and education suffers even more (if one can imagine that). We see about 10% becoming part of the "35 year old sophomore" phenomenon. Their primary function is campus politics, activism and "guiding" the young ones. All "students" have had their brains turned into mush at this point.  As the 90% graduate,  they will demand employment from the government. The government will start absorbing these mindless idiots so as to appease but also to "buy" their votes. Over time, these needlessly hired morons will reach higher positions within government and, in turn,  hire even more of these like-minded buffoons.  Government will expand more and more until it collapses under its own weight due to inefficiency and high costs or because TPTB decided to pull the plug. By that time, they are too indoctrinated to react. It is over. See Greece.

The other possibility is that Trump is elected and does most of the things he says. He becomes so popular that he somehow manages not only to change the course of the country but to also break the cycle of indoctrination for the younger students entering college.  There has to be a changing of the guard in all of these schools and that is not easy to do.  They have to be discrdited to such an extent that they are laughed out of their positions. Otherwise, they will hang around until Trump is out  and just pick up where they had left off.

They are like a bad infection that refuses to go away.

Why even bother going to College. Just pays your money and demand a diploma.

You think these kids will never make it when they leave college?  You'd be wrong.  Because they're never going to leave college.  They'll be the on-campus professional protesters until they're old enough to get Social Security.

Well, if Bernie gets his way, and College is "Free", you could be a student for the rest of your life. I keep getting older and the Freshman keep rolling in 18 - 19 years old.

rbg81's picture

If we just redesignate some of these SJW infested "colleges" as insane asylums, it would solve a multitutde of problems.

Beam Me Up Scotty's picture

Yup and if Bernie does get elected, and college becomes FAAREEEEEE!!!!  I will be going back.  I won't waste time studying on weekends, I'll flunk every fucking course----why miss a good weekend party!!!  In fact, PARTY ALL WEEK LONG!!!  And the best part will be, I can buy a pink wig, and a mini skirt and join the SORORITY!!!  I'M A LESBIAN TRAPPED IN A MANS BODY!!!  SAVE ME BERNIE!!!!!!!

highly debtful's picture

I kinda disagree. Isn't this exactly the kind of behaviour you get when students become your "clients" because they (or their parents) pay exorbitant fees to put them through college? If I sell to you a Rolls Royce at its current market price and you as a customer are willing to cough up that obscene amount of money, would you not tell the dealer: "hell, no way you are you are going to deliver me a car that isn't exactly what I expect it to be, because I'm paying a downright outrageous price for it, so it better be everything I ever dreamed of"?

This kind of behaviour is exactly what you get when you're pricing college studies out of reach of sane people. Those who can pay the price or who are willing to take on the crippling loans to finance their studies are going to want to call the shots.

rbg81's picture

It is true that students are the direct clients of a given school.  But the indirect, and arguably more important, client is the employers of those students.  If they employers feel the school is churing out an inferior "product", they will stop hiring from the school.  Evenually, that will get noticed, but it may take a while.

PT's picture

... which will give the employers the perfect excuse to hire H1Bs.

rbg81's picture

Bingo!  Thanks for adding that important detail.

Ironically, this is what Macluhan predicted back in the '60s. When every new technique can be captured in silicon or software almost immediately, jobs that just repeat the actions someone created will disappear. The emphasis will be on creativity and problem solving. Macluhan referred to it as "learning a living", and said the dominant form of work in the future will be paid learning.

I'm a freelance software these days, and that's exactly what I do: I'm given a problem, I solve it, code it, and then move on. I have to learn new languages, tools, and concepts frequently. The days of getting an education once, and working in a single field, are long gone.

If the people running our universities were smart (they aren't, IMHO) they would be setting up even more continuing education programs for mature students. I foresee a lifestyle where you work 3 days a week, go to school 2 days a week, and keep up some schedule like that for the rest of your life.
