ISIS Is Converting 2/3 Of US Humvees Given To Iraq Into Car Bombs

Islamic State militants have not only stolen a majority of the military Humvees provided to the Iraq Security Forces (ISF) by the U.S., they are now re-purposing them into car bombs.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi confirmed that 2,300 are in ISIS hands, more than 2/3 of all Humvees provided to Iraq by the U.S. Most were stolen after the terrorist group captured the Iraqi city of Mosul in June 2014.

While the vehicles were designed as a fast means to carry U.S. personnel and their supplies into battle, it turns out they are even better suited to be used as car bombs, or vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs).

“There’s a simple reason the militants are using Humvees and other armored vehicles as rolling bombs,” reported Foreign Policy’s Sean Naylor Saturday. “Their protective armored plating prevents defenders from killing the trucks’ drivers before the militants can detonate their loads, while the vehicles’ capacity to carry enormous amounts of weight means the Islamic State can sometimes pack in a ton of explosives.”

ISIS has used the Humvee car bomb as a mainstay in its military tactics, sending waves of them at key enemy locations prior to assaulting the position with ground fighters. The weapons are so devastating that some of them carry explosive power comparable to the device used in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing that killed 168 people.

Unfortunately, ISF personnel and the Kurdish Peshmerga are often unprepared to counter the Humvee bomb threat, given that they sometimes like the anti-tank weaponry required to neutralize the vehicles. The U.S. outfitted the Peshmerga with 1,000 AT-4 anti-tank launchers last year, and plans to send 2,000 to the ISF. Germany has provided the Peshmerga with the Milan guided missile, which has also been proven effective against the Humvee bombs. The weapon has been so popular, one Kurdish family even named their child after the weapon. You can watch the Milan in action below.

Are these the H2 or H3 models?

Quick! Get those F35s packed up and sent pronto!

Maybe with a coupla hundred pounds of charge inside they might be able to get off the ground.

El Vaquero's picture

Last I heard, the USAF was thinking about quietly dropping the F-35 and resuming the manufacture of the F-22.

Cause it flys so much better. And cheap as hell, too.

This is Donald Trump's most shocking statement yet,

However the mainstream media isn't saying a word about it!

What are they really trying to cover up?

Quietly dropping? I didn't think the F-35 could get high enough to be dropped.

So those things DONT come with keys or something to stop just anyone from driving away in them ?  Must try that at my next Military Camp visit.

Hope they spent a little extra change to get the spinning rims

True that.

Ya can't blow yourself up and expect to go on a date with 17 virgins in Humvee that ain't pimped out.

IndyPat's picture

17 virgins? Allah is getting kinda stingy since I last heard it.

Mullah said it was 72! Fuck!

I told him I'd settle for 6 first rate whores, anyway. 72 whiny virgins wanting to cuddle afterwards? I don't think so.

This article is bullshit and is feeding some sort of agenda. ISIS and all the other terror groups operating in Syria ( and iraq now ) who are supported by the West have been making VBIEDS out of anything that moves under it's own power for years. The issue is not what they are making bombs out of, but rather who is providing them with the explosives - i.e. the west, turkey and the gulf state mongoloids.

Re:  feeding some sort of agenda

I think they are just upscaling.  Seriously, if you are going to blow yourself up, do you want to do in it a Toyota pickup-truck or Humvee?

|

It just common sense, you always go for da bling.

IndyPat's picture

Yeah, "Tex Bobs Plumbing" truck didn't get much cred on the battlefield.

These days only an MRAP will do. Just ask our local chief of Police.

Canadian Dirtlump's picture

Generally peaking a large truck, like say a chevy topkick ( like say a dumptruck ) is something they will use. Either way, regardless of what the vehicle is, they have plate steel covering the whole thing save a small slit to allow the driver ( usually dressed in virgin white ) to see. They tend to look like something out of mad max normally and any idea that hummers somehow are a particularly ideal platform for vbieds is illogical. Rest assured the rides are always pimped.

This is Keynes for ya! Krugman's gotta be happy.

On a long enough timeline the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.

A great comfort if you're a fag with no kids (like Keynes) and don't give a damn about what happens after your own demise.

Death by car bomb that really sets off inflation. The endgoal?

Since one less Humvee off the road is part of warmist Al Gore's mantra about no cars for anyone except limousines for liberals like himself, Gore approves of ISIS recycling the Humvees.  By the way, why didn't the Iraqi troops in Mosul drive away with these Humvees when they evacuated the city?  Maybe Obummer knows but isn't saying, jihadist Fifth Columnist muslims like him and CIA Director Brennen aren't supposed to tell until they get Sharia law in America.

The photo was taken in Kiev, quite a long way from Iraq.

Mind you many in the army there are probably tempted to use them to blow up the US embassy. They complain bitterly about how crap they are.

Indeed...

They're being pragmatic.  Whenever I drove one of those pieces of shit I thought it would be better to kill myself than spend another hour getting cooked inside of those pieces of garbage.

Squid Viscous's picture

but the H2 and H3 were awesome SUV's...lol

whenever I see some idiot driving one of those I have the urge to force them into a tree or ditch,

hoo raa!

El Vaquero's picture

I'll put my Jeep XJ that I paid $2k for up against an H2 or H3 in a 4WD contest anyday.

SgtShaftoe's picture

I've taken an old pajero places a HMWVEE could only dream of going.  Your jeep would win against any H(x) with simply a winch and no engine installed.  The Cucwvees (old chevy pickup/blazers) were great though and they had AC and useful working heaters.  I think a lot of jeep guys used to pick them up from DRMO to take parts and put on their jeeps (rear ends, axles, etc.)

peddling-fiction's picture

Sarge, no aircon on the Humvee?

SgtShaftoe's picture

Absolutely no AC.  Just heat and a roaring blower that switches on and off constantly.  If it's really cold, the heat is wholly insufficient.  Seats have 2" of foam wrapped in canvas (at best) with a plywood deck to rest your arm on between driver and passenger.  Did I mention they're pieces of shit?  Some of the old trucks didn't even have heaters.  I had guys with canteens frozen solid on their hips from driving all day.

And yet it is the neocons/neolibs belief that the US can fight a nuclear war against Russia and win?

Can we please quit wasting taxpayer money on weapons and materiel on any of these fucking nations?  This is invariably what happens once we leave any region.

Oh well, I guess we can dismantle this fleet of humvee-bombs with a fleet of shiny new M1A2 Abrams'.  Then, when it comes time deal with all of those forgotten and misappropriated tanks, we can just nuke the fucking place - once and for all.

Huh? Wtf? And whose fault is that stupid post?

Caleb Abell's picture

I think that people are over-reacting.  I know it looks like another US clusterfuck, but that's only because we don't understand the big picture.  Fortunately, barry does.  He plays 10-dimensional chess, you know.  I'm sure this is a well thought out plan ... and like all of his other plans ... when he springs the trap, ISIS will be no more.

I'm not positive, but I think barry's military strategy is modeled on his healthcare strategy.

Tortfeasor's picture

Eventually they'll run out of Humvees, and then what?

Caleb Abell's picture

When that happens, they will call their CIA handlers and requisition some more.
