"Death To All Zombies!"

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Howard Kunstler via Kunstler.com,

Wait a minute. They’re already dead. Brexit just reveals that not everybody’s brains have been eaten. A viral contagion now threatens the zombified institutions of daily life, especially the workings of politics and finance. Just as zombies exist only in the collective imagination, so do these two principal activities of society operate mainly on trust, an ephemeral product of the hive-mind.

When things fall apart in stressed complex systems, they tend to fall apart fast. It’s called phase change. Too many things in 21st century life have depended on sheer trust that the people-in-charge know what they are doing. That trust has subsisted on the doling out of money-from-nothing: debt, reckless bond issuance. TARP, QEs, bailouts, bail-ins, Operation Twists, Ponzi schemes… the whole sad-ass armamentarium of banking necromancy. The politicians let it get out of hand. Things that can’t go on don’t, and now they won’t.

The politics of Great Britain are now falling apart landslide-style. Since just about everybody in or near power can be blamed for the national predicament, there’s nobody to turn to, at least not yet. The Labour party just acted out The Caine Mutiny, starring Jeremy Corbyn as Captain Queeg. The Tory Cameron gave three months notice without any plausible replacement in view. Now Cameron’s people are hinting in the media that they can just drag their feet on Brexit, that is, not do anything to enable it from actually happening for a while. Of course, that’s what the monkeyshines of banking and finance have done: postponed the inevitable reckoning with the realities of our time: growing resource scarcity, population overshoot, climate change, ecological holocaust, and the diminishing returns of technology.

Britain illustrates the problem nicely: how to produce “wealth” without producing wealth. It’s called “the City,” their name for the little district of London that is their Wall Street. In the absence of producing real things, the City became the driver of the UK’s economy, a ghastly parasitical organism that functioned as the central transfer station for the world’s swindles and frauds, churning the West’s dwindling residual capital into a slurry of fees, commissions, arbitrages, rigged casino bets, and rip-offs. In the process, it enabled the European Central Bank (ECB) to run the con-job that the European Union (EU) became, with the fatal distortions of credit that have put its members into a ditch and sent the private European banks off a cliff, Thelma and Louise style.

The next stage of this protean global melodrama is what happens when currencies and interest rates become completely unglued from their assigned roles as patsies in financial racketeering. Sooner or later we’ll know what’s going on in the vast shadowy gloaming of “derivatives,” especially the “innovative” arrangements that affect to be “insurance” against losses in currency and interest rate “positions” — bets made on the movements of these things. When currencies rise or fall quickly, these so-called “swaps” are “triggered,” and then some hapless institution is left holding a big bag of dog-shit. A zombie is a terrible thing to behold, but a zombie holding a bag of dog-shit is like unto the end of the world.

Once this contagion starts burning, the people-in-charge won’t be able to quell it the way they did last time: by drowning it in torrents of money-from-nowhere. At least not without inducing real-deal inflation, the kind that leads to epochal ruin and more intense political upheaval: the nation-changing kind. We’re about five minutes away from that in the USA already, with the loathsome duo of Hillary and Trump putting on a Punch and Judy show for a disgusted public. If nothing else, Hillary and Trump represent the withering of political trust in America. The parties that spawned them are also whirling around the drain of credibility. They won’t survive in the form we knew them.

Who knows what comes out of this vacuum, what rough beast slouches towards Washington.

Even if you are paranoiac that does mean they aren't after you.

Pilots will tell you what happens when your aircraft leaves its flight envelope. It's not pretty. Our economic systems is right at the edge of its flight envelope.

"Death To All Zombies!"

I thought All Zombies were Dead, so confused...

Decay is Constant's picture

Technically, undead.  This way you can kill them again, and again, and again.

where's vikki's picture

Zombies or bureacrats, same difference. We have all been exposed. Are we all diseased? Yes, I believe.

Vikki, Vikki I want my cookie

DaddyO's picture

We live in interesting times.

Just look back at the ZH archives and you'll find we've had these discussions before.

All the predictions that have been prognosticated in the comment section are now coming to fruition.

There are some really precient comments by some really smart hedglings.

Nothing new under the sun!

SgtShaftoe's picture

Agreed.  We've pretty much hashed out the various ways this could go and end.  The only thing different in my mind from almost 7 years here is the squishiness of the timing.  We've pretty much called all these events from back then.

DaddyO's picture

Timing is always the big bugaboo!!!!!!!!!

That's why it's always better to be a day too early than minute too late.

Technically, Zombies are already dead.  So... a 2nd Death?

If you REALLY want to be sure, go the Wahhabi way:  Off with the Heads! The first time around, to save you the trouble for a second round.

p.s. Just to show what a crock some Ancient Stories are... if the Romans ALLEGEDLY wanted to prevent Jesus from rising from the dead or having his body stolen, then they should have done what is was done in the Coliseum all the time:  OFF with his head (after being taken down from the cross).  Let's see anyone do the "Raised from the Dead" trick after that!

pps To Catholics:  If you recall your Bible classes, St. Peter (nee Saul the Fisherman from Galilean) was crucified upside down -- allegedly because he "was not worthy to die the same way as Jesus".  I smell a rat!  Hanging upside down will kill you in 20 minutes, rather than 20 hours.  Devious SOB!

Consuelo's picture

Don't you remember the story of the hedgeless horseman...?   Riding around terrorizing, killing, maiming and generally wreaking havoc in search of his head...?

Dr. Engali's picture

If you recall, Joseph of Aramithia was a man of wealth and influence who petitioned Pilate for Jesus's body. It was the Jews who wanted to squash any talk of resurrections, Pilate didn't give a rat's ass. As far as his death it didn't take twenty hours. He was dead long before nightfall when the soldiers were instructed to break his legs so he died before Passover.

where's vikki's picture

But! did he make it through the eye of the needle?

They could have dropped the body from a helicopter into the ocean too.

SidSays's picture

And yet here you are 2000 years later talking about it.  Must have been something to those old stories.  I wander what was changed?

A zombie is a terrible thing to behold, but a zombie holding a bag of dog-shit is like unto the end of the world.

That is so good, I want that on my tombstone.

DaddyO's picture

End of the World? Maybe!

More like "End of the Age"...

Yep, and waste is a terrible thing to mind.

Does that include Zombie America too, HK?

Zombies? Pretty ballsy move calling out Buffett, Soros and Greenspan like that.

I'm sure it'll all blow over.   This guy's just a bit of a pessimist.   Pretty soon it'll be football season and the peasants can get back to their socialist sports stadiums - and slow motion flags - and recall why Merica is the greatest-n-gloriest country in the whole-wide-world.

Nobody For President's picture

Football season? If this keeps going the way it is, nobody will be able to afford the electricity for the TV, much less the tickets to the game.

exartizo's picture

ya... a little lighter on the "epochal ruin" and a little heavier on the "regional wars" please.

oh and you might want to cut back a little on the whole Star Trek borg drama thing too.

J Jason Djfmam's picture

I was beginning to think all this talk about unsustanability was just that.

Here we are.

Vageling's picture

Zombie killings eh? Let the hunger games begin. I liked the purge more.

Kagemusho's picture

Zombies? (Chuckling)  Yeah, I hear that a lot at my local fish & game store. Joe Farmer or Jim Mechanic will walk in, shoot the shit with his store owner buddies, and up and say "I'm buying this (seriously destructive hardware)  for my wife/son/daughter/whatever, in case the zombies come." (Wink, wink, nudge, nudge).

Everyone there knows exactly what is meant by 'zombies'.

peddling-fiction's picture

Agreed, but the meaning is always obfuscated time and time again. So here goes again.

Zombies are the brainwashed masses that will be hungry and angry after the EBT cards stop working and/or the stores are emptied.

Once running water and electricity are history, they will start to look like dirty ragged zombies.

That is why Hollyweird strives to produce shows where shooting and killing the zombies is the right thing to do.

Sadly if this Brexit implosion is not stopped and it burns all the way into the 555T derivatives, we are about to witness all of this sooner than later.

Another crappy piece by Kunt-slur that reads like a two-bit porn novel without the sex.

Sudden Debt's picture

Don't forget they'll pull us all down and it will get a shitload worse for all of us before the system can be rebuild.

Zip_the_Zap's picture

Kunstler is the king-pin of doom and gloom porn. I guess he is off peak oil and we are all going to need horses. If you think I am kidding, read the shit he wrote in 2007/2008. He was full of shit then, and he is full of shit now. I know a misanthropic strain runs through these posts, but, lets get real. Yes, the debt is unmanagable, but people are aware of it. We have a functioning market economy. Brexit was just that, Britain left the EU. Okay, so what. It freed itself from Brussels, so what. And,in fact, NOTHING HAPPENED, IT IS STILL IN THE EU. We are just going to get a snout full of drama. And for all I know, the sharp operators will use it as an excuse to clear out some liabilities, not drive us into a dank, fetid cesspool of Kunstler' liking.

How does this creep get any credibility since he is not even a broken clock?

I figure that's they way a lot of players will see it.

Well, after that tirade, I guess the only good thing to say about the coming helicopter money drop, is at least, unlike the commies in Venezuela, we will at least have something to wipe our bottoms with in the outhouse......

>It’s called phase change.

It is called that.  Yes.

Hillarys Server's picture

It’s called phase change.

Speaking of phase change -- the fabric of our space time continium may be in a false vacuum, i.e., not at its lowest possible resting energy state.

If so, any time if may suddenly without warning plunk down from the current state to the lower resting state, which is also called a "phase shift".

If this occurs, all matter in our universe will be ripped apart and destoyed during the shift.

No worry, though, since the Fed will print paper matter and inject it into our space time continium to hold things up.

In 1938 the world was being told that economies were fixed (despite the opposite being true) there were limited conflicts increasing but dismissed as not leading to anything serious and Britain was the worlds largest corporate empire having reigned over most of the world for over 200 years. 7 years later Britain was broke and destroyed like most of the world.. Except America, who with an enormous war machine set about conquering the void left by Britain.

How seriously do you think they took the few voices speaking of the horrors to come were taken? Answer: they were'nt. Living in similar times is scary and fustrating but everyday we put off the big crunch is better for us pheasants, more of us awake every day. At some point they will try to take the internet off us then millions of young people will drop their phones and turn over cars and set them on fire.. unless the crunch comes earlier and, well -it's brave new world for us then.

Wantoknow's picture

This article totally misses the point.  The greatest economic skill and financial acumen has been expended in the construction of these results. The best of financial and economic tools have been turned to the construction of this outcome.  It is the critics of all this wisdom that turn to crackerjack economic schemes in the belief they will repulse this attack.

The people behind this are not fools, dolts, incompetants or anything of the sort.  They are planners; thoughtful, cool, determined and united in the destruction of the current order.

An enemy is inside the gates and has been for a very long time.  The symptoms of further financial breakup will soon be of interest only to market and economic pathologists who should be writing papers on the subjects involved for a long time to come.  For most, the symptoms of economic, financial and social disintegration will be everyday facts of their lives.

The political class has been bought out lock, stock and barrel.  This must soon be evident to even the dumbest.  All that remains is to find an adequate response to treason at the highest levels. It is not as though one can find a court to try these people in.  They own the courts so think again.
