From Cops To Clinton: Impunity Corrupts

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Dan Sanchez via,

Wednesday, two shocking videos of police officers fatally shooting civilians (Alton Sterling and Philando Castile) surfaced. The day before, many were appalled to hear the Director of the FBI announce that Hillary Clinton would not be charged for mishandling classified information. The two events may seem unrelated, but at bottom, they concern the same fundamental problem: impunity.

Impunity is the essence of power. What, after all, is power? Is it simply the capacity to exert unjust force? The ability to impress one’s will upon the flesh or belongings of another? No, it’s more than that.

Most anyone can wield unjust force. Anyone could walk out onto the street right now and exert their will on somebody weaker: say, pushing over an old lady or stealing candy from a baby. And the toughest, or most heavily-armed guy in town can strong-arm just about any other single person.

But isolated incidents of aggression do not constitute power. The “reign” of the rogue rampager is generally short-lived. It only lasts until the community recognizes him as the menace to society that he is and neutralizes him.

Power isn’t simply about the exertion of unjust force. It is about what happens next, after the exertion. Does the perpetrator generally get away with, or not? Systematically getting away with it – or impunity – is where power truly lies. And that is what makes agents of the State different from any other bully. State agents can violate rights with reliable impunity because a critical mass of the public considers the aggression of state agents to be exceptionally legitimate. Impunity is power, and as Lord Acton said, power corrupts.

The Impunity of the Badge

State impunity is at the root of the problem of police violence. As agents of the exalted State, the police are seen as paladins of public order. The populace grants cops a special dispensation to commit violence that would be considered criminal if perpetrated by anybody else. This privilege is enshrined in law most clearly as the doctrine of “qualified immunity.” As Evan Bernick of the Institute for Justice wrote:

In the 1967 case of Pierson v. Ray, the Supreme Court held that police officers sued for constitutional violations can raise ‘qualified immunity’ as a defense, and thereby escape paying out of their own pockets, even if they violated a person’s constitutional rights.

When victims of police violence or their heirs seek redress and are awarded monetary payments, it is taxpayers, and not the cops, who pick up the tab. Police officers are rarely even prosecuted for violence inflicted while they’re on the clock. The worst that an offending officer can generally expect to face is getting fired, but he will more likely just get a paid suspension.

Thus insulated from responsibility, officer treatment of “mundanes” is predictably often grossly irresponsible. Confident in being sheltered from consequences by their “blue privilege,” officers are far more prone to indulge in lethal cowardice: to place “officer safety” so far above civilian rights that they are willing to gun down a stranger at the slightest whiff of potential danger. Alton Sterling and Philando Castile each carried a gun, as they have the natural right to do. Neither threatened the officers with his weapon, or even brandished it. Yet in both cases, merely becoming aware of the guns sent a cop into a murderous panic. Both Sterling and Castile were fatally shot multiple times in the chest.

The Impunity of High Office

State impunity not only corrupts the regime’s low-level enforcers, but its elite policy makers as well. The FBI let Hillary Clinton off the hook for secrecy violations she committed as Secretary of State, even though these were much more egregious than violations that have earned lower-level personnel decades in prison. She used technology that was more open to being compromised by spies and hackers, while at the same less open to legal and public scrutiny.

But the kinds of activities she was hiding are far more criminal than the fact that she hid them. As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton played a key role in bringing war to such places as Libya, Syria, and Honduras, and in escalating the war in Afghanistan. She is complicit in causing untold death and misery.

Yet, thanks to her connections and her position in the state power apparatus, she faces no consequences for her crimes, and is free to acquire even more immunity and power as a likely President of the United States.

It is the “sovereign immunity” she enjoys as an officeholder that has made Hillary Clinton so reckless and cavalier about the havoc she has wreaked around the world. If she thought she might ever be held accountable for upending entire countries, she would have likely been far less warlike in her policies.

From policing to foreign policy, impunity corrupts, and absolute impunity corrupts absolutely.

Libtards ... a Special kind of Special

If plastic water bottles are okay, but plastic bags are banned, — you might live in a nation (state) that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.
If you can get arrested for hunting or fishing without a license, but not for entering and remaining in the country illegally — you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.
If you have to get your parents’ permission to go on a field trip or to take an aspirin in school, but not to get an abortion — you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.

If the government wants to prevent stable, law-abiding citizens from owning gun magazines that hold more than ten rounds, but gives twenty F-16 fighter jets to the crazy new leaders in Egypt — you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.
If, in the nation’s largest city, you can buy two 16-ounce sodas, but not one 24-ounce soda, because 24-ounces of a sugary drink might make you fat — you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.

If hard work and success are met with higher taxes and more government regulation and intrusion while not working is rewarded with Food Stamps, WIC checks, Medicaid benefits, subsidized housing, and free cell phones — you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.
If you pay your mortgage faithfully, denying yourself the newest big-screen TV, while your neighbor buys iPhones, time shares, a wall-sized do-it-all plasma screen TV and new cars, and the government forgives his debt when he defaults on his mortgage — you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.
If being stripped of your Constitutional right to defend yourself makes you more “safe” according to the government — you might live in a nation that was founded by geniuses but is run by idiots.

Aristotle of Greece (not verified) santafe Jul 8, 2016 7:43 PM

Completely agree.

Seek_Truth's picture

"Completely agree."

Shocking that you agree with yourself- you fool no one.

Santafe = Aristotle of Greece = mofio.

peddling-fiction's picture

And both are also hasbara trolls trying to discredit the Biblicism Institute site that actually has a lot of uncomfortable info.

Thus explaining their permanence and shamelessness.

Seek_Truth's picture

Bingo, nailed it.

Tylers need to fetch the ban hammer.

peddling-fiction's picture

ZH is now on the Amazon Cloud (Jeff Bezos).

I am not so sure the ban hammer is their most comfortable choice on this issue.

Everytime really controversial info was posted on ZH when it was in Switzerland on the OrtCloud, the site suffered massive denials of service.

Now it is smooth sailing with Amazon.

However, I have never been censored (that I know of).

I only remember that Hillary article that was closed (access denied) down the same day by ZH.

Who knows, maybe we are posting in a special corraled version of ZH.

Handful of Dust's picture

These killers are low IQ and Gruberized Americans who are too stupid to realize the real culprits are the Wall Street bankers. Unfortunately, they shoot each other instead of taking action against the real enemy.

Seek_Truth's picture

Need to aim higher.

Until the globalist billionaires and trillionaires are taken out, it will be like every other revolution.

Take out wall street scum, bankers, politicians, etc-

And there will always be thousands of scum willing to take their place at the feeding trough of the globalist billionaires and trillionaires.

peddling-fiction's picture

Yep, that is trillionaires with a T.

They do exist.

sessinpo's picture

Yep and the only one with the authority and power to go after them is government, which government fails to do. Is it any  wonder that trump and sanders got so much traction?

This isn't going to end well or peacefully as some might try or hope for.

Boris Badenov's picture

Exactly! Have people forgotten The Banksters' IMPUNITY?

RafterManFMJ's picture

The problem seek as I see it isn't the psychopaths - they are at most what, 3% of the population?

The problem is the worthless cowardly traitors that will sell out their fellow man, their class equals for power, and prizes.

After all if 3 people tell 97 to do X, Y or Z - pretty soon they'll meet a noose. But if they can bribe or sweet talk 10 people to take up arms and bash and control their fellow man ... then they can build power.

Add the ability to magically print currency and ANYONE'S price can be met; the few that cannot be bought can be dealt with by assassination.

This is why I recognize the enforcer class as a special kind of evil - they chose it. The psychopaths suffer from an actual mental defect and thus deserve a humane end.

Their enforcers? Well...not so much.

Seek_Truth's picture

The head of the serpent is comprised of trillionaires and billionaires- perhaps .0001% of the population (perhaps less).

By taking out these- the smallest group creating and funding the "problem" involves the least amount of "activity," it makes sense to target the head first.

And- when the head is gone- who will the enforcers work for?

In the medieval ages, the peasants created "fairy tales," which was their way of speaking forbidden truth right under the King's nose.

In our day, we need the terminally ill to make it their goal to become proficient with firearms, such that they can take as many pieces of the "head" with them before they shed this mortal coil.

It should become a time honored tradition, passed on through the generations, in the form of modern "fairy tales," that would create a new class of Heroes.

PS- All of this is simply "theoretically speaking", of course ;-)

Jeff Bezos = Amazon Cloud = CIA

So if we are all commenting on the AmazonCIA cloud do you think they are tracking?

peddling-fiction's picture

Everything is being tracked always and more.

But it would be another issue if they would be deploying a selective web site enabled only for dissenters and their agents.

I wuz here when ZH was hosted in Bulgaria.  And yeah, santa fe and Aristotle and mofio are likely the same person, but have you actually tried to read and understand that which is posted at Biblicism Institute?

Nah, you'd rather shoot the messenger.  Scratch that- Maybe you'd rather crucify him?

peddling-fiction's picture

Read my previous comments.  I do agree with the Biblicism Institute and thus exposed these trolls as hasbara trolls in favor of Zionism.

acetinker's picture

OK, maybe I'm not clear on which trolls you're referring to.

Santa Fe/Aristotle/mofio is not helping his cause by using multiple accounts and agreeing with himself, though- on which I think we agree.

Please don't capitalize zionism.  I find it offensive:)

peddling-fiction's picture

Santa Fe/Aristotle/mofio are zio trolls that show Biblicism Institute site links to make people sick and tired of seeing the site´s links. They are NOT trying to promote the site.

acetinker's picture

Could be.  If so, it's a rather ineffective tactic for this bunch of misfits.  Wouldn't you say?

I use the word 'misfits' in the kindest possible way, and include myself in their number.

Then again, I have actually entertained the same thoughts as that Marcus dude-  Maybe MH-17 and MH-370 really were the same plane.  Maybe the passengers were dead days before the 'crash' in Ukraine.

Convenient that 370 hasn't been found, eh?  No way to really match serial numbers so Malaysia Airlines gets to claim losses on the same plane twice!

Then again, again, that turned out to be a rather ineffective tactic too.

Bay of Pigs's picture

This Santa Fe clown needs to get turfed.

Come on Tylers, get your shit together.

For anybody paying attention, this week, on basically the 240th anniversary of the Republic, the Clinton Foundation administered the coup de grace to the history of American government.

The Clinton Foundation managed to nullify 6 federal laws on behalf of their candidate, and in so doing gut Congress and the FBI-in public.

The Clinton Foundation has totally pwned In every sense of the meaning.

There's a reason 30,000 emails can never be read by anybody outside the Foundation. They detail the individuals and organizations making it all happen.

Maybe we need to get to the point when a cop approaches your car after pulling you over, you already have your gun pulled and demand their ID. Then, of course, shoot them for moving when they do so.

J S Bach's picture

Even Zero Hedge hypes against cops like they're the reeeeal bad guys.  I don't defend what the few trigger happy and paranoid (due to proven black violence) officers do, but c'mon.  Doesn't anyone see that the real ratio of inter-race-related violent crime is overwhelmingly black on white?!  I'd like to see Zero Hedge mention just one-one-hundreth of these atrocities which occur on a daily basis.  No.  But, every time an evil racist white cop shoots a (usually criminal) black, it's every other posted story for three days.

Like I said... C'mon. (eye roll)

Cops are a much greater threat to the safety of my family than niggers.

Chupacabra-322's picture

The United States Government sets a precedent to all other government agencies (like local police) that it's ok to flout the law. We aren't seeing anyone punished for the illegal invasion of Iraq, Lybia, Syria, Yemen and Ukraine in fact, the reports that suggest Bush "lied about the intel he had" have all but been buried away.. not even the MSM talked about the contents of the "second report" that came out with regard to investigating the "intel about Iraq" (the first report cleared the intel agencies saying the intel was accurately divulged.. the second report was to say if Bush accurately portrayed what he was told.. the answer, clearly, was no, he didn't.. making him a war criminal for lying about intel to get us into the conflict over invalid reasons.. we won't even start getting into Gitmo and torture) or Criminal Obama's crimes against humaity and crimes agaist The American People.

When the top dog tells the public "F off, we'll do what we like and not hold anyone accountable", all the smaller dogs follow suit.

So, when you see local police abusing the public and no one doing anything about it, you're seeing the smaller dogs following the Criminal "UNITED STATES, CORP. INC".

"Cops are a much greater threat to the safety of my family than niggers."

Get real:

"...during the 2012/2013 period, blacks committed an average of 560,600 violent crimes against whites, whereas whites committed only 99,403 such crimes against blacks. This means blacks were the attackers in 84.9 percent of the violent crimes involving blacks and whites. This figure is consistent with reports from 2008, the last year DOJ released similar statistics."

The Color of Crime - "Blacks are statistically 50 times more likely to attack whites than vice versa"

stay on task. Save that argument for a gang violence article... It was only a year ago when a cop fatally shot an unarmed man as he was running away...That's not hype.

J S Bach's picture

True, auricle... these terrible things do happen.  My point is - an exponential more number of innocent whites are ruthlessly gunned down by "I hate whitey" black thugs - whether in hold ups, home invasions, or just for sport.  The numbers don't lie... but, they are purposefully covered up so as to not insite any kind of sane retribution by the white working stock of this and every other European-peopled country.  This shit will only get worse, because at the root of it all - natural segregation of the races is not permitted to occur.  And the media inflame hatred by blacks against whites... and the politicians and courts tie the hands of cops whose job it is to enforce the laws that so many of these negroes perpetually break.  It's a vicious circle which can only be broken by natural segregation.  People roll their eyes at such a statement, but if one seeks a CURE, not a BAND-AID which continually fills with pus, it is the only solution.  Ethno-states.  Nature's solution.

I live in China where the population is homogeneous; made up of 92% Han Chinese. The environment here in my part of Sichuan is peaceful with none of the social tensions and violence I see reported as occurring in the US. There seems to be much truth in the observation that a homogeneous society is a peaceful one. Besides China, South Korea and Japan also come to mind as examples of this.

J S Bach's picture

Amen, Tarjan.

It's not "hatred" to want to live exclusively amongst one's own kind.  It is in fact, natural.  And like you stated, such an environment is far more peaceful than the multi-cultural sewers which the jews propagate (ONLY in white countries).

SgtShaftoe's picture

Actually most black crime is against other blacks.  Ignorant people of any color usually seek retribution against people they should know and love.

swmnguy's picture

Most crime is not committed on purpose, or by professional criminals or psychopaths.  Most crimes are due to bad decisions, bad impulse control or poor anger management.  The victims are the people nearby, whether family, neighbors, the guy down the block.  This is especially true among poor people, who are less mobile either physically or socially and like most of us, tend to hang around those similar to them.
