US Sends Another 1,000 Troops To Poland As Part Of NATO Effort To Counter Russia

Tyler Durden's picture

President Obama is in Warsaw, Poland today where NATO members are holding a summit to show the alliance will stand firm against new threats, including a “resurgent Russia.” The Warsaw meeting is being held in a district of the capital, Praga, that Poles view as a symbol of Russian betrayal of their nation.

In the meeting, Obama called on NATO to "stand firm" against Russia, terrorism and other challenges even as a key member, UK, retrenches from Europe. In an op-ed published in the Financial Times on Friday, Obama says the U.S. and European nation "must summon the political will, and make concrete commitments" to affirm European cooperation.

“This may be the most important moment for our transatlantic alliance since the end of the Cold War,” Obama wrote. “Russia’s aggression against Ukraine threatens our vision of a Europe that is whole, free and at peace.” The US president added that “NATO will once again send a very clear message that we are here.”

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg echoed the US President, mentioning deployment of troops, military infrastructure and hardware closer to Russia’s borders.

Stoltenberg said that Russia's hostile actions in Ukraine have spurred the alliance to raise its defenses on the eastern flank. Stoltenberg spoke to reporters before the NATO summit opened in Warsaw on Friday to approve, among others, the presence of four battalions in Poland and the Baltic states. These nations feel threatened after Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and continues to back separatists in eastern Ukraine. Stoltenbeg said: "No one was talking about reinforcing deterrence" before the aggressive action in Crimea. Still, Stoltenberg added that the alliance wants “a meaningful and constructive dialogue with Russia” to reduce risks, increase predictability and enhance transparency “in times like these.”

NATO’s massive build-up in the three Baltic countries and Poland is officially labeled “assurance measures,” but not everyone in the alliance is keen to take part in what the Foreign Minister of Europe's most important NATO member, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, called three weeks ago “saber-rattling and warmongering.”

“Whoever believes that a symbolic tank parade on the alliance's eastern border will bring security is mistaken,” Steinmeier said in defiance of multiple war games in the region. A recent YouGov poll found that 64 percent of Germans agreed with his statement, with only 16 percent rejecting it.

Other prominent Germans agreed: the country's Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel, an influential yet moderate politician, said NATO must revise its policy. “We must ask if the world would be a better place when both sides conduct military exercises on the borders and arm themselves,” he told Passauer Neue Presse on Thursday, adding that it is time for Europe to start a new “disarmament initiative.”

It was not just Italy: Italy recently said it is wary of NATO’s hardline policy towards Russia. The alliance should "build bridges" in Eastern Europe and cooperate with Moscow to tackle global terrorism, Italian Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti told Corriere della Sera on Wednesday.  "We agree with what Steinmeier has said," she added.

Still, Germany - where weapons nearly doubled last year - expressed a different angle, with its defense minister saying that NATO is right to deploy troops on its eastern frontiers to counter what she called a "completely unpredictable and aggressive Russia." Ursula von der Leyen says the Baltic states want protection because Russia's annexation of Crimea shows that Moscow "doesn't respect borders."

Disagreeing with Steinmeier, Leyen told German broadcaster ARD on Friday that NATO needs to maintain a dialogue with Russia from what she called a "position of strength." Von der Leyen said "it's important that NATO deploys with such strength that it's clear nobody can see an advantage in attacking this military alliance." She spoke as heads of NATO member states were meeting in Poland, where relations with Russia will be among the top issues.

* * *

Meanwhile, Moscow, which has always opposed NATO’s build-up in its neighborhood, said it is “closely watching” the Warsaw summit and keeping the door for dialogue open, especially to fight what it sees as a "genuine threat" - terrorism. “We hope common sense will prevail,” the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Friday.

“It is absurd to speak of a threat coming from Russia when dozens of people are being killed in the heart of Europe, while hundreds die in the Middle East every day,” he stressed. Peskov added that NATO’s “anti-Russian hysteria” and multiple troop deployments do not help find common ground for cooperation.

Peskov added that "Russia is not looking (for an enemy) but it actually sees it happening. When NATO soldiers march along our border and NATO jets fly by, it's not us who is moving closer to the NATO borders."

* * *

Russia's stance notwithstanding, AP reports that leaders of NATO and the European Union nations signed a "historic deal" that boosts their cooperation in defense against new challenges. The deal was signed Friday in Warsaw, shortly before a NATO summit opened there to show the Western world's unity in facing threats from the East and the South. It was signed by NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, European Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

Stoltenberg said it was a "historic deal" that gave "new substance, new impetus" to the EU-NATO partnership in fighting hybrid warfare, cyberattacks and containing the massive wave of illegal migrants.
Tusk said the new deal would mend a situation in which it could seem sometimes that NATO, a military alliance, and EU, a political and economic bloc, are "on different planets," not in the same city. Both have headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, though some nations belong to only one organization.

Hybrid warfare is the use of different tools such as propaganda and psychological campaigns, cyberattacks, and use of political, economic and energy pressure, among others.

But the most important development was Obama announcement that the U.S. is sending an additional 1,000 U.S. troops to Poland as part of a NATO effort to reinforce its presence on the alliance's eastern flank.

The U.S.-led battalion is one of four that NATO will begin rotating through the region. The move is meant to act as a deterrent to Russia, AP adds.

Obama is touting the decision in remarks to reporters after a meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda. The U.S. president thanked Poland for its contributions to the campaign against the Islamic State group, including its F-16 aircraft and special forces trainers. He called Poland "a lynchpin in the defense of NATO's eastern flank."

Naturally, Russia will promptly respond in kind and send even more troops to its borders with Europe, and the escalation will continue until finally an "accident" happens and the next phase of this unprecedented redux of the Cold War enters its next phase.

Well this is the big story.

Putin lost his cool yesterday and said "what can I do to make you understand, we are near nuclear war"

Another stunning display of stupidy by NATO.

Does anybody seriously think that Europe has the stomach for a fight to liberate Lithuania if Russia strikes its military assets?

Really?

Without NATO those commies would have overrun Europe and they would all be Godless atheists now.

Harlequin001's picture

of course they would. That's why they're holding exercises on the outskirts of Paris isn't it?

Oh, wait...

Does anybody think NATO would have the collective spine to liberate Latvia and Estonia if Russia were to sever it from the rest of NATO by taking out Lithuania?

Hands up those who think Spain would want to get involved in that? or Turkey, now that arrsewipe has officially just apologised to Putin?

Yesterday I added this post and you continue to insist that Putin lost his cool. He did not.

Also, he said lots more. Putin mentioned how U.S./NATO Tomahawk missiles are being installed right by the Russian border and how their range can easily be extended to threaten Russian cities, thus creating a real threat of nuclear confrontation.

More than losing his cool, he showed his genuine frustration about U.S. belligerence on Russia´s borders, Cuban missile crisis style, and the lies by the U.S. about justifying the missile systems because of a non-existing Iranian threat.

The following article says he loses it, but watch the video and listen to his voice and see his body language. It is frustration, not anger.

If I was in a NATO tank moving east in Latvia and I was a paranoid moron with no sense of inertia or rational perspective, it would look to me like the Russian border is moving west towards me in a threatening manner.

Either that or I would be a psychopath that purposefully excludes rational perspective like the US and NATO leadership.

JOHN PILGER - A WORLD WAR HAS BEGUN: BREAK THE SILENCE

What are the political leaders of Russia, or China, etc., supposed to do given the degree to which NATO is being controlled by increasingly psychotic psychopaths, whose plans are to consolidate total world domination ???

Civilization has become runaway criminal insanities. The most criminally insane most dominate civilization. There are NO sane ways to fight insanity after the development of weapons of mass destruction. Given that Russia is the world's second nuclear power, what NATO is doing is criminally insane. Putin, as the current political leader of Russia, is forced to cope with NATO having a criminally insane agenda. It would not matter if Putin was frustrated, or angry, or whatever other possible emotions he may have. Putin is objectively faced with the situation that NATO is the most criminally insane organization in the world. NATO is working towards the globalized consolidation of a political system within which all other countries must submit ... or else ...

That "or else" is a criminally insane threat. But nevertheless, the long history of successful war based on backing up deceits with destruction, becoming successful finance based upon public governments enforcing frauds by private banks, has created the existing systems of excessively successful organized crime, which have become runaway criminal insanities. I am not aware of any politically possible ways to stop the tragic trajectory of those who were previously the most socially successful, by becoming the worse psychotic psychopaths, being able to stop themselves, or to be stopped by anyone else, from continuing to control NATO in ways that become more and more criminally insane. I am not aware of anything that the political leaders of Russia, or China, etc., could possibly do that will end up making any sense, because there is no attitude they could take, nor any emotion they could feel, that could possibly respond effectively to the ways that NATO has become runaway criminal insanities, because NATO's goals are global domination, which amounts to the total dominance of being able to enforce frauds, despite that enforcing frauds does not stop those from still being fundamentally fraudulent. Due to that, the history of civilization, based upon being able to successfully back up lies with violence, has become runaway criminal insanities, while those who were previously the most socially successful through using those means have become the most criminally insane.

Civilization as a whole is headed towards final failure from too much success based upon being able to back up lies with violence. Given that NATO is the single greatest manifestation of that history at the present time, Russia can only attempt to maintain the MAD Mutual Assured Destruction policies, which, so far, are the only policies which have been able to be developed to cope with the development of weapons of mass destruction that are trillions of times more powerful than anything else which previously existed in human history.

IF NATO WAS NOT MORE AND MORE BEING CONTROLLED BY PEOPLE WHO ARE MORE AND MORE BECOMING INCREASINGLY PSYCHOTIC PSYCHOPATHS, THEN RUSSIA, OR CHINA, ETC., MIGHT BE ABLE TO MAINTAIN RATIONAL DETERRENCE.

However, rational deterrence is working less and less well, due to the degree that the real world is actually being controlled by increasingly psychotic psychopaths. I am not aware of any sane ways to "fight" that kind of runaway insanity. Rather, it appears to be a lost cause. The human species' technologically driven civilization is headed towards committing collective suicide. Countries like Russia, or China, etc., can endeavour to develop more weapons systems which SHOULD provide rational deterrence. However, that would only actually work if NATO was not being controlled by increasingly psychotic psychopaths, committed to an agenda of global domination through the enforcement of frauds.

The established systems have become globalized electronic monkey money frauds, backed by the threat of force from apes with atomic bombs. The MAD Money As Debt systems were backed by the MAD Mutual Assured Destruction systems. NATO is controlled by people who are working towards an agenda to consolidate total dominance of the MAD Money As Debt systems, despite that requiring pushing the MAD Mutual Assured Destruction systems towards ever increasing risks, which are criminally insane to take. However, thousands of years of the history of being able to achieve social successes through backing up deceits with destruction, and enforcing frauds, has given an enormous momentum to the criminally insane sociopolitical habits to continue to try to do that, as much more as possible.

In my view, the political leaders of countries like Russia, or China, etc., are faced with an impossible problem to resolve in any favourable ways. Rather, the only ways that countries like Russia, or China, etc., can respond to the criminally insanities that they are threatened with from the USA & NATO, etc., are to also become more insane too, by developing even more insane weapons systems, to attempt to continue to provide rational deterrence against the criminally insane weapons systems already developed, and increasingly being deployed, criminally insane weapon systems that the USA and other NATO countries.

In my opinion, most people want to continue to believe that the MAD Mutual Assured Destruction systems will continue to provide rational deterrence. However, those people tend to not face the facts that those weapons are backing up the MAD Money As Debt systems, which are inherently insane, and which automatically become more insane. The world IS dominated by the most psychotic psychopaths. They are deliberately continuing to take greater and greater risks of starting a war using weapons of mass destruction, which could spin out of control, and indeed, would necessarily spin more and more out of control, after such events got started.

It is not possible to imagine any feasible favourable resolutions of the real problems that history has selected for the most psychotic psychopaths to end up controlling NATO. The efforts to consolidate totally globalized MAD Money As Debt systems are driving the MAD Mutual Assured Destruction systems towards civilization committing collective suicide. Those who still expect that there will continue to be rational deterrence are becoming increasingly unrealistic in their views of the actual geopolitical events. Russia is facing the greatest build-up of hostile military forces on its boarders since World War II.  What NATO is doing in those regards is manifesting runaway criminal insanities. However, there is nothing that Russia can do in that context but attempt to remind NATO of the rational deterrence which should work to stop that, BUT ACTUALLY IS NOT WORKING TO STOP THAT! Given that situation, it does NOT matter what Putin attitude may have, or what emotions he may feel. Nothing that Putin can do will change the ways that NATO has a criminally insane agenda, and NATO is committed to carrying through that criminally insane agenda. (Indeed, probably the greatest threats that Putin faces are that those who control NATO would like to have Putin assassinated.)

It would be "nice" if human beings and civilization could better adapt to the development of globalized electronic frauds, backed by the threat of force from atomic bombs. However, it is politically impossible for that to happen. The ONLY things that can actually happen are the current trends being extrapolated: the ruling classes are becoming increasingly psychotic psychopaths, while those they rule over are becoming increasingly impotent political idiots. Collectively, technologically advancing civilization is headed towards committing suicide, because it continues to be politically impossible to prevent the excessive successfulness of backing up deceits with destruction, and enforcing frauds, from not automatically becoming astronomically amplified to become greater and GREATER!

I WISH that I could still indulge in believing in the rational deterrence at the heart of the MAD Mutual Assured Destruction systems. However, after one more fully understands that those are backing up the MAD Money As Debt systems, then it becomes painfully obvious that the real world is automatically becoming more criminally insane every day. The combined money/murder systems have become multiplied MADNESS, ... MAD squared, ... headed towards MAD cubed ... The ONLY thing that Putin's Russia can actually do is continue to attempt to remind NATO of the rational deterrence, by Russia continuing to also develop more weapons of mass destruction. However, any such reliance upon hoping for rational deterrence fails to face the facts of the degree to which NATO is actually controlled by people who are increasingly psychotic psychopaths, who are not being effectively restrained by their own people, living inside NATO countries, because most of those people have become increasingly impotent political idiots.

Collectively, civilization is rushing at an exponentially accelerating rate towards committing suicide. That appears to me to be the relatively objective facts. I sympathize with those who want to continue to believe that there will be enough rational deterrence to prevent that from happening. However, less and less do I observe any good grounds to continue to believe in such rational deterrence. Every day, in every way, that NATO countries have mass media which demonize Russia, while the continues to be a greater and greater military build-up of forces that threaten Russia, the preciousness of the MAD Mutual Assured Destruction systems become even more precarious ...

In my view, anyone who has any hopes for the foreseeable future is only able to do so through being willfully blind towards the basic nature of the MAD Money As Debt systems, being backed up by the MAD Mutual Assured Destruction systems. I no longer am able to believe that the people who control NATO are somehow not increasingly psychotic psychopaths. Similarly, I see no reasonable hopes that enough of the people living inside NATO countries will go through sufficient series of political miracles in order to stop being incompetent political idiots.

All NATO countries are already totally in the grip of debt slavery systems, which are driving them towards debt insanities. Since the debt controls were always backed by the death controls, the runaway debt insanities are set up to provoke death insanities. Doing so AFTER the previous systems of paper money frauds, backed by gunpowder weapons, have ACTUALLY become globalized electronic money frauds, backed by the threats of the force of atomic weapons, is many orders of magnitude more criminally insane a situation that ever existed before in human history. However, all of the entrenched sociopolitical habits, of those people who were previously successful, for generation after generation, through backing up deceits with destruction, and enforcing frauds, has driven those people towards their commitment to their global agenda, to which they are going to continue to require countries like Russia, or China, etc., to totally submit ... or else ...

Eventually, it looks like we will get that "or else" ...

THERE ARE LESS AND LESS INDICATIONS THAT RATIONAL DETERRENCE IS WORKING, WHILE THERE ARE MORE AND MORE INDICATIONS THAT NATO IS INCREASINGLY DOMINATED BY PSYCHOTIC PSYCHOPATHS.

I CAN NOT IMAGINE ANYTHING THAT ANYONE LIKE PUTIN CAN DO GIVEN THOSE FACTS, BUT ATTEMPT TO CONTINUE TO DEVELOP THE REALITIES OF RATIONAL DETERRENCE, WHICH WILL CONTINUE TO NOT ACTUALLY WORK, BUT RATHER, DRIVE CIVILIZATION OVERALL TO BECOME MORE AND MORE CRIMINALLY INSANE.

I have no issue with defending our borders against other nations. I'm not as keen on defending other people's borders, but sometimes it may be in our best interest. I have absolutely zero tollerence for threatening Russia and forcing our way into a war. When Russia sends troops over a border, we should 'consider' how to react. But if we start sending troops in, as a veteran and a person who loves this country despite all its flaws, I can't support that move.
