The Turkish Witch-Hunt Begins: Erdogan Begins Arresting Government Critics

Tyler Durden's picture

Having arrested those who were supposedly directly involved in the attempted coup, which at last count this morning amounted to over 6,000 individuals of which 3,000 members of the army (or less than 1% of Turkey's 315,000-strong forces) and the Turkish legal system, including judges and prosecutors. That Erdogan was so quick in assembling a list of enemies in the judicial branch, whose arrests started early on Saturday even before the coup was fully doused, is the clearest indication that Erdogan was not only prepared for the "coup", but its inevitable outcome.

The video below released by the government Anadolu Agency, shows Turkish police interrogate senior army officers allegedly involved in the failed coup.

However, it was the next step that was the critical one: the one where Erdogan - having cracked down on his immediate military and legal opponents - took his crusade against everyone else, including the press and the educational system.

The first inkling of the upcoming "witch hunt" took place earlier today, when the Turkish police asked "citizens" to report those who support terrorism and crime. In other words, McCarthyism reborn, only this time the bogeyman is not communism.

And then, just hours later, we found out that the first casualty of this expanded witch hunt was none other than a person who had absolutely no involvement in the coup: a former university record, whose only crime was being a government critic, who moments ago tweeted that he was being arrested.

What happens next: an acceleration of the counter-putsch of course, with many more arrested, whose only crime is being guilty of criticizing the government.

The endgame is simple - it is shown in the "chart" below.

He may be a 'Monster', but he's "our" Monster.

For now. As long as he does our bidding.

(Remember Noriega, remember Saddam Hussein?  They were our monsters also. Until they went rogue)

the truly frightening re-realization for me is the extent to which Media is in the tank

How can the top dog go rogue? He's the new Caliph of Europe.

As long as Erdogan doesn't start rounding up bankers, he'll be fine.

Au contraire.

Those behind the phony coup production have very much included the distancing of Ankara from Washington as one of the goals -and fringe benefits - of putting him back on his perch - with a collar. His rage against what he perceives as Obama betrayal last winter - neatly arranged by the faction in the US high ranks who proposed the Russian shoot down as a trouble free gambit - will be deliberately stoked. It is considered desirable for now that he continue to be perceived as "the strongman." Makes it easier for the real power running this place now to get on with the important stuff. No 'monster' that Erdie - he's all Golem - since 2012.

More importantly, the recent Warsaw NATO meetup announced the hand over of power there to new owners - the same follks who are running Erdie now - the removal of the longstanding Turkish veto against Israeli participation in the alliance gave the green light to a new ZATO -with US influence much diminished -except to pay some bills. Euros delighted, Erdie as well, Russia well satisfied. Oh, did I mention Russia - they're the other part of the team running Ankara now. A joint Israel-Russian operation. The real coup that is. Happened earlier this month. Nobody wanted to talk about it.

That fireworks thing yesterday was so much more exciting. To report that is!

Those links lead to the best journalism on point that I've read for many many moons. In the vein of Robert Fisk and John Pilger. Every so often, like a headlight through fog, someone with far superior insight and ability cuts through the constructed opacity of the MSM narrative to actually illuminate the taget subject. Thanks very much for the introduction. How did you find him/her?

I can't believe there were those who thought it was a real coup and the CIA was behind it and democracy triumphed. LMAO!!!

If the CIA was behind it he would be dead. If the Turkish military was behind it, he would be in prison like Morsi in Egypt.

From the article - Witch hunt galore. Turkish police asks “citizens” to report those who support terrorism & crime.

Ok, is that not what the US govt has been doing for a long time.  The latest version is "See something, say something"  There were even versions where kids were encouraged to turn in suspicious parents.  And the version where the meter readers were used to snoop and report.

Erdogan is the worst piece of shit I've seen in a long time. His fake coup supposingly done with 100 soldiers is laughable. He's doing it for total control.

roxyNL's picture

It's the same in the US and western  countries, the only difference is that this purge is done through money. Those who control the $$$ can buy any company, media, politician, lobbyist ...

The only difference is that you have many layers between those who have the control and the executants, thus making it more difficult to trace the upper layer.

With unlimited purshasing power, I predect that Central Banks will be in control of everything in the near future, first they will start to buy ETFs and stocks, after that they will appoint the chaiman and the companies executives and thus total control of the whole economy.

The US should recognize Kurdistan immediately and move air and land forces there.

Of course the gay muslim in the White House hasn't the intelligence to even think of doing it and Kerry is busy getting his 87th face-lift.

Why...?   For what purpose...?

jm's picture

I'm thinking you are a dullard or a person that hopes for a weak US so that other, likely even more cruel forces can fill the void.

But I suppose that yours really is the question.  Does the growing mass of morally impoverished, Kardashian-watching US welfare bum flower power effeminates have the critical mass to lead our country swilring down the global toilet or is there strength yet "to send an imperious challenge down through all the generations and give pause to the crueler and more wicked enemies." Pardon the Sir Walter Scott.

Are Turks stupid enough not to see it was a fake coup attempt and that Erdogan was behind it?

BobEore's picture

Err, yes, if you put it that way.

The dazzling show was all custom made to take advantage of the long standing fear of these type of military takeovers. The last one was quite recent. There was HUGE symbolism in the goings on - stories of soldiers being tortured and killed in mosques, for instance. This is all about setting the stage for the Caliphate. In which the  various social estates are all subordinate to the authority vested in the supreme religious and civil leader. Nobody in their right mind really wants that here - but it's not all that hard to put Turks out of their right mind.

All about spectacles. Death, destruction, even losing everything is fine - as long as it's "spectacular." Sort of like the Aksaray palace thing. It's impossible to overdue things here - which leaves a large measure for error; like yesterday.

oncemore's picture

It was not his coup.

Eitherway he did know, that it comes.

He let the stupidos, acting on behalf of CIA and Saudi Arabia, orchestrate the coupand he let them run against a wall.

After their crashed, he started the big purge.

This time he could escape CIA color revolution.

I have a feeling, that he should avoid a plane travel, if he does not want to die soon.

Pareto's picture

"Keep your head down", or, "I will just lay low", and "don't cause trouble".  Its this kind of attitude that gives way to tyranny.  The government must be kept in check and at all times.  "Speak loud and speak often, even when your voice shakes."  The government lives, and takes because we let it, not because we need it.  This relationship, to the extent that the majority is thought to benefit, is unsustainable.  There is nothing durable about a parasitic government - just ask Venezuela.

INcentives matter.  Kill those and you kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.  Why is this so difficult to understand?

Fuck Ergodan.  He offers nothing but takes everything.

Socialism - taking everybody to the lowest common denominator - one asshat politician at a time.

VWAndy's picture

Yep force is his only tool. If he had to reason with producers it would not go down this way.

VWAndy's picture

This is how it would go down here if anyone was wondering. Oathtakers been putting lists together for decades of people that wont drink the koolaid. They dont care what koolaid you drink. They only care that you do drink some.

I like the stall thing best. A coup is really a bad idea. The debt stays and so does bankster controls. Not one honest person had any say in this. Thats how it goes when force is the only tool being used. No need to convince anyone when you can simply force everything on everyone. Now in the stall producers have a say. The way this went down producers had 0 input on any of it.

A global stall of the honest producers. Not the people that only use force to get what they want but earn the things they want and need without the use of force but reason. This is key.

Reason over force. The feral have but one tool and its force. That wont work with a global stall. They will have to reason with the honest this way. The real power lies with the ones that actually do everything that makes it all go.

Do it right and you wont have to do it twice. A concept all governments just wont grok. Aint fiat grand?

Think about that stall thing. Because reason is the good way to do the right thing. Force is a game we wont win. As history has shown many times. You cant best fiat in a bidding war. In barter world fiat dont stand a chance.

Reason over force! Reason over force! Reason over force! Reason over force!
