Global Warming Expedition Stopped In Its Tracks By Arctic Sea Ice

Submitted by Craig Boudreau via The Daily Caller,

A group of adventurers, sailors, pilots and climate scientists that recently started a journey around the North Pole in an effort to show the lack of ice, has been blocked from further travels by ice.

The Polar Ocean Challenge is taking a two month journey that will see them go from Bristol, Alaska, to Norway, then to Russia through the North East passage, back to Alaska through the North West passage, to Greenland and then ultimately back to Bristol. Their objective, as laid out by their website, was to demonstrate “that the Arctic sea ice coverage shrinks back so far now in the summer months that sea that was permanently locked up now can allow passage through.”

There has been one small hiccup thus-far though: they are currently stuck in Murmansk, Russia because there is too much ice blocking the North East passage the team said didn’t exist in summer months, according to Real Climate Science.

Real Climate Science also provides a graph showing that current Arctic temperatures — despite alarmist claims of the Arctic being hotter than ever — is actually below normal.

The Polar Ocean Challenge team is not the first global warming expedition to be faced with icy troubles. In 2013, an Antarctic research vessel named Akademik Shokalskiy became trapped in the ice, the problem was so severe that they actually had to rescue the 52 crew members.

In 2015 a Canadian ice breaking ship, the CCGS Amundsen, was forced to reroute and help a number of supply ships that had become trapped by ice.

The icy blockade comes just over a month after an Oxford climate scientist, Peter Wadhams, said the Arctic would be ‘completely ice-free’ by September of this year. While it obviously isn’t September yet, he did reference the fact that there would be very little ice to contend with this summer.

“Even if the ice doesn’t completely disappear, it is very likely that this will be a record low year,” Wadhams told The Independent in June.

Wahdams says he expects less than one million square kilometers by summers end, but the current amount of Arctic sea ice is 10.6 million square kilometers, according to data from the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). The NSIDC puts the rate of ice loss for June at just about 60,ooo square kilometers a day. If that number were to hold, it would take approximately 160 days for the Arctic to dip down to the predicted one million square kilometers.

Global warming scientists are quite the Puzzled brain-dead.

Normalcy Bias's picture

Perhaps, not. They can return to port as 'survivors' and then raise money off of fear-mongering "Global Cooling and the Coming Ice Age."

They already have some TIME Magazine covers from the 70's that they can dust off and re-use.

Hell, it's easier than working for a living...

Urban Roman's picture

I just love these stories.

Maybe they can phone up the Russians and have 'em send one of their new nuke-powered icebreakers.

I wish these gentlemen the same success that Shackleton had during his Imperial Trans Antarctic Expedition.

From Wikipedia:

"Disaster struck this expedition when its ship, Endurance, became trapped in pack ice and was slowly crushed before the shore parties could be landed. The crew escaped by camping on the sea ice until it disintegrated, then by launching the lifeboats."

The good news is that even 100 years ago antarctic ice did disintegrate.

There are so many dumb denier cunts here at ZH

Is it obligatory to be stupid to qualify as right wing?

Victor von Doom's picture

No retard - intellingence and critical thinking are the prerequisites.

BarkingCat's picture

While there are plenty of right wingers that have a delusional blind spot towards religion, their logical weakness is at least towards something that is supposed to be taken on faith.

Left wing delusions however are many and its followers are high priests of hypocracy.

Claiming Global Warming is a science all the while completely ignoring the scientific method and suppressing dissenting voices.

Even mother nature is laughing at these idiots with extreme sarcasm. Events such as this expedition being stuck in a Russian port because there is too much ice or the Global Warming conference in Copenhagen few years ago getting snowed in, in a city that does not normally get snow. Then a near repeat few years later in London.

No wonder it is now Climate Change instead of Global Warming. It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature.

Mencken said "It's hard to get a man to disbelieve what he is being paid to believe."

I believe this applies to every whore-scientist that parrots the global warming lie.

And you as well.

Have a source for that quote?

I believe the quote you're thinking of is actually:

Co2 emitted by large ship sailing around the north pole for no reason ?

And people driving around chasing Pokemon.... (sigh)

. . . _ _ _ . . .'s picture

We really need to stop intimating that CO2 is a threat. It is not. CO2 does not cause warming. It is called a greenhouse gas not because it causes heating, but because farmers use it in their greenhouses to increase yield! CO2 is plant food.

Releasing CO2 into the atmosphere is not the problem with this expedition.

Sokhmate's picture

water vapor is some one or two orders of magnitude more heat trapping than CO2. Ban water.

gladih8r's picture

Shit, dude don't give these morons any ideas.  Global warming freaks will latch onto anything to keep the gravy train going.

cbxer55's picture

A heat gun would work better. Just don't use it to dry yer hair. ;-)

JusticeTBuford's picture

Wouldn't a "heat gun" add to the global warming?  After all, the TPTB want our guns.  Dont give them any ideas.

cbxer55's picture

I was responding to the cat (Justice T. Buford) who said "anyone have a hair dryer?" Thought he was being facetious. I was just adding to it.

Got it? It's sad that I have to splain my self in this community. Just sad. ;-(

JusticeTBuford's picture

I was adding to your satire.  Sad I had to explain it to you.

cbxer55's picture

Well, I didn't get it. But it's all good. Guess I haven't been drinkin enough 100 proof lately.

I reversed my down arrow on yer ass. ;-)

Global warming is a sham created by the Globalists to justify a global carbon tax to fund their 1984/Brave New World Global government.

Variations in solar output and wobble in the earth's orbit have always been the main factors in the earths climate.

cougar_w's picture

2016 is already shaping up to be the hottest year ever recorded in the modern record. 2015 was the hottest before this year. 2014 was the hottest before that. 2012 was the hottest year on record ever up to that point.

2017 will likely be the hottest year on record.

2018 will then likely be the hottest year on record.

After that 2019 will likely be the hottest year on record.

We can then expect 2020 will be the hottest year on record for the entire modern temperature record.

Can expect 2021 to be the hottest year on record.

And 2022 will likely be the hottest year on record up to then.

Though it won't matter anymore.

SMG's picture

So we've been keeping weather records for say a couple hundred years.   You do realize the earth is over 4 billion years old right?  The earth has been far warmer in the past.

Also weren't all the coastal cities supposed to be flooded by now, you know like that Al Gore video?  You people crack me up.

Beam Me Up Scotty's picture

Oh boy, I didn't think everyone needed the /sarc tag, but I think the cougar was being sarcastic----and truthful all at the same time.  Because the global climate change people and their supporters keep saying "this year" is the hottest year on record, year after year after year.

StychoKiller's picture

Bwahahahaha!  Meatbags are so stoopid!

Urban Redneck's picture

Yeah but...

They have ice cores...

That have trapped CO2 from way back when...

And the "average" levels from way back when are so much lower...

And NO "scientific" paper on ice core samples that I have ever read (I admittedly gave up after about half a dozen) provides a calculation to estimate historical CO2 levels based on the measured CO2 content of the ice sample. Which wouldn't be a big deal if CO2 wasn't soluble in ice. [Read that sentence again] Or to speed that chemical reaction from solid/geological to liquid/human or gaseous/SJW time - it would be like a college brat opening a bottle of club soda, and then upon coming back a week later and finding no CO2 bubbles and suing Schwepes for failing to carbonate the club soda they are entitled to.

Perhaps there's some super secret chemistry that they only teach at the graduate and post graduate levels, and only applies to published post graduate chemistry papers and not published post graduate engineering/math/finance papers...

Or perhaps I should have went to crappier schools and paid less attention.

Anyone who studied chemistry at a higher level have any better ideas?

Urban Roman's picture

I studied chemistry, but never did it as a profession. Still, it's interesting.

My results come up the same as yours. Of course oxygen and nitrogen are also soluble in ice, but to different degrees. I would expect sea ice to preferentially abosorb CO2.

Just because you find a bubble under 400,000 annual deposit layers, I don't think it has much relationship to the air 400,000 years ago. There is quite a bit of activity in ice. It isn't like granite or basalt, because it's a whole lot closer to its melting point. In the case of floating sea ice, tiny droplets of brine work their way down through it, from top to bottom because 1) the brine has a higher density; 2) the brine has a lower melting point. So the floating ice interacts with modern seawater, weather, and atmosphere. The land ice? I don't know. But probably.

Ralph Spoilsport's picture

Cougar my man, you need to take the long view on this climate stuff, like this extended climate forecast:

stilletto's picture

Utter bullshit. The satellite measures show you are talking pure shit.

Who was that masked man's picture

Within the past hundred years, human brains have been actually physically shrinking and average IQs have been dropping yes, humans are actually devolving, getting dumber.  You are living proof.

Perhaps you missed...

"There has been one small hiccup thus-far though: they are currently stuck in Murmansk, Russia because there is too much ice blocking the North East passage >>>the team said didn’t exist in summer months, according to Real Climate Science.<<<

Odd...don't you think...that "climate scientists" claimed the ice is not there in summer in fact, they're actually stuck in ice...that is summer months?

"Real Climate Science also provides a graph showing that >>>current<<< Arctic temperatures — despite alarmist claims of the Arctic being hotter than ever — is actually below normal."

Apparently "climate scientists" can't even read a thermometer OR don't want to believe what the thermometer is saying.

Which isn't really anyone's problem really, except the ones Murmansk, by sea July.

But they still have the option to fly out of Murmansk ;-)

msmith9962's picture

Cougar.  Thank you for being a voice of reason.  I don't think it's a hoax.  I think there are scumbags trying to capitalize on it and I don't want to deal with any top down legislation.  But I think we are kind of screwed.

Umh's picture

Stick a thermometer up your ass and let us know when it gets cold.

C'mon Cougar, this is ZH.  Please don't even joke about "global warming" crud. It stopped being funny ages ago.

divingengineer's picture

Is there any historical evidence to show that periods of warming are detrimental to humanity?

tarsubil's picture

This doesn't need to be studied. Everyone knows people are happy in the cold. Just look at the major population centers in central Canada and Siberia.

bloofer's picture

It's rather warm this summer--in other words a normal summer--but nowhere near as hot as it was in 1988. And 1988 did not break records set in the 1930s.

Lore's picture

Local stations LIE!  For example, local temperatures were incredibly cold for weeks last winter, but day after frigid day, the temperature reported on TV was several degrees higher than what we observed on local thermometers.  It was so blatant and consistent at one point that people at the local pub were joking about it.  It's pretty sad when you have to second-guess the weather reports!

Victor von Doom's picture

...because by that stage even the Leftist fuckwitts of the world will have realised that the records are bullshit.

TxExPat's picture

Did you ever study Algegra or Trig back in Jr. High?  Do you remember what a sine wave looks like?

Pick some points on the rising side of the wave and plot them out on a straight line, and then say that's what the descending side will look like...  Has it occured to you that "The Pause" might be the period around the Crest of the Wave?  No Sunspots, likely to get quite a bit colder before it starts getting warmer again...
