Why Social Fragmentation Suits The Powers That Be

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Charles Hugh-Smith via OfTwoMinds blog,

The Elites have successfully revolted against the political and economic constraints on their wealth and power.

Ours is an Age of Fracture (the 2011 book by Daniel Rodgers) in which "earlier notions of history and society that stressed solidity, collective institutions, and social circumstances gave way to a more individualized human nature that emphasized choice, agency, performance, and desire."

A society that is fragmenting into cultural groups that are themselves fracturing into smaller units of temporary and highly contingent solidarity is ideal for Elites bent on maintaining political and financial control.

A society that has fragmented into a media-fed cultural war of hot-button identity-gender-religious politics is a society that is incapable of resisting concentrations of power and wealth in the hands of the few at the expense of the many.

If we set aside the authentic desire of individuals for equal rights and cultural liberation and examine the political and financial ramifications of social fragmentation, we come face to face with Christopher Lasch's insightful analysis on The Revolt of the Elites and the Betrayal of Democracy (1996 book).

"The new elites, the professional classes in particular, regard the masses with mingled scorn and apprehension.... Middle Americans, as they appear to the makers of educated opinion, are hopelessly shabby, unfashionable, and provincial, ill informed about changes in taste or intellectual trends, addicted to trashy novels of romance and adventure, and stupefied by prolonged exposure to television. They are at once absurd and vaguely menacing."

Though better known for his book on the disastrous consequences of consumerism in an era of economic stagnation, The Culture of Narcissism: American Life in an Age of Diminishing Expectations, Lasch's The Revolt of the Elites and the Betrayal of Democracy is the more politically profound analysis, as it links Elite dominance of the media, higher education and cultural narratives to the erosion of democracy as a functioning institution.

Extreme concentrations of wealth and power are incompatible with democracy, as Elites buy political influence and promote cultural narratives that distract the citizenry with emotionally charged issues. A focus on individual liberation from all constraints precludes an awareness of common economic-political interests beyond the narrow boundaries of fragmenting culturally defined identities.

In a society stripped of broad-based social contracts and narratives that focus on the structural forces dismantling democracy and social mobility, the Elites have a free hand to consolidate their own personal wealth and power and use those tools to further fragment any potential political resistance to their dominance.

The Elites have successfully revolted against the political and economic constraints on their wealth and power, and now the unprivileged, unprotected non-Elites are rebelling in the only way left open to them: voting for anyone who claims to be outside the privileged Elites that dominate our society and economy.

As long as the American public chooses to focus on individual liberation and consumerist expressions of "freedom," the Elites will have a free hand politically and financially.

The Powers That Be excel at claiming they are busy reforming a broken system, even as they co-opt, water down or outlaw any real reform that threatens their concentrations of wealth and power: Why Our Status Quo Failed and Is Beyond Reform.

Precisely what does individual "liberation" mean in a neofeudal society of indebted financial serfs?

Weak article. The mega corporations which burden the world are wholey dependant on The State for unfair and anticompetitive practices, as well as unlimited cheap fiat that we are compelled under force of murder or kidnapping to use. The more "fragmented" our society becomes, the less legitmacy The State will have. Does the author honestly think reform is fucking possible? No, they don't. If not, what use is unity? No, we need to disunite these States of America. Flag waving a voting isn't going to fucking cut it.

We need to End the FED. We need to walk away from D.C. in all literal and metaphorical senses. Only then will the healing be possible.

Maybe first glance is seem that divided citizenry is more difficult for control by central planner, but reality is very different - by divide population statist power is become more influence than is organic formation of local self-governing unit of individual influence. For example, in Amerikan, by demagoguery and divisive identity politicking, liberal agent of chaos is set emotionally dysregulating portion of population (neo-liberal) to attack local police force. Eventually local police is fully neuter, unable to deal with raging racist mob and local population is sucker into call upon Federal force. This is how Himler is establish SS in Germany circa 1934.

The deeper levels of the achievements of the ruling classes were the ways that, for generation after generation, their ability to fund and buy has resulted in them consolidating their control over the schools and mass media. Those were the most enduring ways that:

"A society that has fragmented into a media-fed cultural war of hot-button identity-gender-religious politics is a society that is incapable of resisting concentrations of power and wealth in the hands of the few at the expense of the many."

Boris, as an "outsider" looking at the USA, and its more closely related countries, from a distanced perspective, could be thereby enabled to see things that those too close cannot see. I.e., those too close "can not see the forest for the trees."

As Marshall McLuhan famously said:

"I do not know who discovered water, but I am sure it was not a fish."

Another "fish" related metaphor that is appropriate is that:

"The fish rots from the head."

Clearly that applies to the ways that the American Money went rotten from the top down, so that cascaded through lower levels, where the "value" of everything became a fetish, because the "money" became based upon public governments enforcing frauds by private banks, the most significant single institution of which is the American Federal Reserve Board, which is integrated into a globalized system. At the same time, almost everyone now takes almost completely for granted themselves living inside of totally rotten monetary and taxation systems.

Although some people can agree with the proposition "END THE FED," almost nobody can agree upon what to replace that FED with. Furthermore, due to the degree that the American People have been systematically dumbed down by their schools and mass media for generation after generation, the vast majority of them are so clueless that they do not have a clue how clueless they are. For all practical purposes, it is politically impossible to have any relatively rational public debates which could converge on an agreement regarding "END THE FED" which could even remotely approach any consensus regarding what kind of system to replace the FED with!

In my view, enough people would have to be able to agree upon a better understanding of themselves and society, in order to have the proper context to be able to agree upon changing those. However, the overwhelmingly obvious social facts are that the vast majority of people have been so totally mis-educated, and misinformed, during their entire lives, that they could not achieve any better understanding of themselves and their society.

the ruling classes have

Overall, the most crucial core of that excessive successfulness was that applying the methods of organized crime through the political processes have driven that towards manifesting as runaway criminal insanities, because institutions like the Federal Reserve Board demonstrates the ways that successfully ENFORCING FRAUDS necessarily becomes exponentially more FRAUDULENT. For generation after generation, the American people have adapted to living INSIDE sociopolitical systems based upon being able to ENFORCE FRAUDS. Therefore, "We the People" have more and more become reduced to becoming bullshit consumers, rather than competent citizens. Moreover, in my view, that excessive successfulness, achieved by the ruling classes making those they ruled over become "Zombie Sheeple," has become, for generation after a generation, kinds of "Mad Sheeple Diseases," that the relative layers of the ruling classes have also now got too.

America Is Being Divided And Conquered Into Oblivion

In my opinion, the most spectacular symbol, so far, of that that were the ways that the events on 9/11/2001 were an inside job, false flag attack. In order to believe in the "official story" regarding 9/11 one has to deliberately ignore basic physical realities, such as the way gravity works, and the structural properties of the substance steel. But nevertheless, all of the most significant domestic and foreign affairs that the USA has engaged in since 9/11 have been based on that patently absurd "official story" regarding what was supposed to have happened that day!

Similarly, the same concerns apply to the existence of the Federal Reserve Board, as the single most significant institution inside the globalized MAD Money As Debt systems, whereby private banks are legally allowed to create the public "money" supplies out of nothing as debts, while governments force everyone else to accept that, and thus the basic realities regarding the FED are runaway ENFORCED FRAUDS, while almost everyone has adapted, for generation after generation, to living INSIDE ENFORCED FRAUDS, despite those becoming exponentially more FRAUDULENT, and despite the ways that such "legalized counterfeiting" of making "money" out of nothing as debts is prima facie a violation of the principle of the conservation of energy, as well as required misunderstanding the concept of entropy in the most absurdly backward ways.

WHILE almost everyone, for generation after generations, has adapted to living inside sociopolitical systems based upon ENFORCING FRAUDS, while that has become about exponentially more FRAUDULENT, actually doing so was based upon the ruling classes capturing enough control over the schools and mass media, such that the vast majority of people would end up so totally mis-educated and misinformed that they were incapable of critical thinking. Therefore, in my opinion, there is no reasonable hope for the foreseeable future of that kind of society. Although their problems will continue to get worse, faster, for the vast majority of people (who are being more and more symbolically robbed by the established systems based upon ENFORCING FRAUDS), the vast majority of people have become unable to understand that in any deeper ways. Moreover, they have been conditioned to feel like they do not want to understand that in any deeper ways.

For anyone interested in what I regard as deeper levels of analysis, see my comment under:

VWAndy's picture

Im working on it. Give me a break they had a head start of several hundred years.

A little help might be nice?

Radical Marijuana's picture

Yes, one could say that "they had a head start" going back before Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilizations. Certainly, a strong case can be made for how the current monetary systems can be traced back to what may well be metaphorically referred to as Babylonian. That we still measure time using their system indicates the strength of that current of culture persisting through the globalized civilization that is dominate today.

It is arguable that the oldest technology was the domestication of animals, which may have gone back before the controlled use of fire, as well as back before agriculture, as the domestication of plants. Indeed, the domestication of some human beings by other human beings would go back and back, into the "pecking orders" of social animals long, long before there were the ancestors, of the ancestors, of the current human species.

It appears to me that not only does one NOT tend to get much "help" to cope with that, but rather, everything is set up to work against getting any "help" to learn how to think more critically. Pretty well everything, throughout every sociopolitical system, applies systematic pressures, through integrated systems which provide punishments and double punishments (misnamed as "rewards"), in order to condition people to tend to conform with the herd, as well as to "respect" the egregious hypocrites that operate through those systems.

Despite that impossible ideals NECESSARILY cause their opposite to happen in the real world, we are surrounded by worse and worse deluges of that kind of bullshit, such as rampant, runaway political correctness, etc. ... Anyone who spends enough time to try to talk to tens of thousands of people from all walks of life, regarding topics such as the monetary and taxation systems, will tend to come to the conclusion that that seems like talking to parrots, who respond with similar sets of prerecorded messages. In general, "public opinions" are strange beasts which are mostly the result of triumphantly scientific brainwashing. More than 99% of psychological understanding is actually applied to attempt to make people believe in bullshit, rather than become critical regarding their being told bullshit social stories.

Indeed, it appears that the ONLY "help" one may get is "self-help," since almost everyone else is more likely getting paid to NOT "help," but rather, to hinder individuals developing more critical self-awareness. After all, when one does attempt to think for one's self, the results tend to be as H.L. Mencken stated:

"The most dangerous man, to any government, is the man who is able to think things out for himself, without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost invariably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane and intolerable, and so, if he is romantic, he tries to change it. And if he is not romantic personally, he is apt to spread discontent among those who are."

I disagree. Washington's strength lies within the use of Fed notes and the ability to enforce them with a gun abroad. This is only possible because of the massive size and passivity of the US populous. If a single state were to secede, or even credibly threaten, Fed notes would tumble and Washington DC (and all of its corporations) with it.

Regardless, even if unity were the answer, the USA has nothing as a whole to unify around. Cultural and political lines need to be redrawn radically--and not necessarily along present state borders. Singular government for the entire USA is bad for the same reason global government is wrong for the world.

A society that is fragmenting into cultural groups that are themselves fracturing into smaller units of temporary and highly contingent solidarity is ideal for Elites bent on maintaining political and financial control.

I would take it farther than that.  I think that TPTB are working to get the citizenry fighting amongst themselves.  Such infighting allows TPTB to consolidate their grip on power/control, and the end result is that they protect themselves from the pitchfork wielders.  It's the old divide-and-conquer strategy.  Don't believe me?  Look at how George Soros is funding divisive groups like Black Lives Matter.

To make a comprehensive overhaul of the system we need to End the Fed, first and foremost.  TPTB know this, and will use every tool in their arsenal to stop it from happening, as that's where they get their ultimate control--control of the money.  Second, we need to repeal the 16th and 17th Amendments (to start), and then create another amendment limiting the terms for Senators and Congressmen.  Accomplishing these things would go a very long way to re-establishing the US as an economic superpower, and minimizing the accomplishments of the communists/progressives over the past 100+ years.

GunnerySgtHartman's picture

I agree 100% that the 16th Amendment should be repealed (and replaced with the FairTax, IMO), and the Fed needs to go.

How will repealing the 17th Amendment, which established the direct election of senators and representatives, change anything?  What is there to stop TPTB from trying to concentrate power in the state legislatures to elect the senators and representatives wanted by TPTB?

To Hell In A Handbasket's picture

First, the average American must rid themselves of brainwashing. The state is not all bad. Aspects of collectivism/socialism is not all bad. If you really want reform, then its a case of the lesser of 2 evils. Bite the bullet and have publicly funded election campaigns. A presidential election should be limited to $10 million dollars, per candidate.

Yes you may laugh at the $10 million figure, but this will force these out of touch bastards masquerading as politicians to actually tour the country and do hustings, allowing the media to actually do their job and report the policies and views of the electorate. It will make every candidate(except in brainwashed safe seats) realise the everyday needs of his constituency. Yes it will hurt the feelings of low taxes-small gubermint voters, but it is a price worth paying, as it will keep out vested interests and the lobbyists, which is tantamount to legalised bribery.

Term limits is a double edged sword. It also has the side effect for politicians to sell out and make a quick buck before they are booted out by term limitations. There is no perfect solution, but public funding of campaigns do works.

GunnerySgtHartman's picture

The south had it right in 1860.  Lincoln was dead wrong and dead too late,  Booth should have acted 4 years sooner.  We likely would have avoided a war and its obscene consequences that reverberate to this day in a nation---in reality divided---that bears no resemblance to the myth of United.

By now a half dozen or more countries would have been formed on this part of North America, likely a dozen.  With that, there would be no "FED" run by jews for 40 yeras. There would have been no necessity for a TARP or other financial manipulation to reimburse the utter failures of the very same men who have ruined hundreds of milliions of savers. And then rely on them to not only rescue themselves but pay themselves out of the TARP bonuses for failure.

This topsy turvy economy would not exist.

It's unlikely to ever happen but the only way for the middle classes to survive and prosper is to permit the secession of a multitude of states whose citizens have nothing in common. What on earth does a rude, discourteous, paranoid New York Investment bankster have in common with a rancher in Montana?  Why should these two states be in the same 'country'?

Why isn't Californica a separate country as well?  35 million people who already have multiple major issue differences in how they want to govern themselves. Two countries alone should be Californica.

And Florida has as much in common with Mississippi as the New England states have with Mexico.

If we do not divide voluntarily then the middle classes might as well give up the notion of prosperity forever. The only way ----- in the "One World" control that the 1% are obsessive about ----to advance in life will be divide.

To continue to let the 1% 'fracture' us and distract us with extremely important issues like 'can trannies use the men's room and the ladies room', 'should men, real ones, be forced to now sit down to pee' so as not to offend anyone who must sit due to their restrictive anatomy designed by nature?

Herd control.... how big of a herd can the global oligarchy control at any one time, with this classic 'divide and conquer' strategy and the realization that they are working both sides of the equation simultaneously... such as setting up the bolsheviks... losing control when Lenin died.... then setting up the Nazis... to combat them... all done through the establishment in London, DC-NYC, and Berlin... this game is and always has been the same, only Mother Nature ever really gets in the way as she does cyclically... at minimum every 3600 yrs.... some regions on much shorter timeframes as Clube and Napier pointed out.

Lincoln wasn't any different than the Kennedy brothers or anyone since or before in any civilization... such as Caesar in Roma.... trying to change or fix the system is nearly always impossible, as the herd has been carefully taught to support the system that destroys them.. this is the pattern of life here in Purgatory... dark side rules... waking up to this simple fact changes how you see the world around you... same as seeing the patterns of economic manipulation so often charted here on this site... different paths for different folks... all pointing to the same realization that this game isn't being played for our benefit... osis... no pain, no gain, and the real goal is waking up, everything else is an obstacle in this race... from divide and conquer to simple distraction, dissociation, diversion, the greed and thirst for war, death and destruction... etc... same as always while one remains in this game.... set to end soon... here comes Big Momma.... 'soon'.

Sometimes uniting means defeating the proxies of the enemy.  Wouldn't it be glorious to finally ride down those smarmy assholes who have been in the media mocking you for all these years?  To see those smirks wiped off the faces of those the elite have empowered over the rest of us?

And if we go the alternate route, all falling blindly in line with our "solid collective institutions", we will be giving the elites in charge of those institutions exactly what they want.  If either way apperently benefits the elite (which it does really, the elite will find a way to profit off of any situation and maintain their power), I'd rather just be free to do what I want.

some more restrictions in addition to term limits such as provision that any
proposed law stand alone and any law that applied to the people applied to them
as well. Just 2 that comes to mind. I am sure we could put our common heads
together and come up with a few more empowerments/restrictions.

In the analysis of algorithms, the master theorem provides a solution in asymptotic terms (using Big O notation) for recurrence relations of types that occur in theanalysis of many divide and conquer algorithms. It was popularized by the canonical algorithms textbook Introduction to Algorithms by CormenLeisersonRivest, and Stein, in which it is both introduced and proved. Not all recurrence relations can be solved with the use of the master theorem; its generalizations include theAkra–Bazzi method.

In computer sciencedivide and conquer (D&C) is an algorithm design paradigm based on multi-branched recursion. A divide and conquer algorithm works by recursively breaking down a problem into two or more sub-problems of the same or related type, until these become simple enough to be solved directly.
