How Global Elites Forsake Their Countrymen (Or Why 'The Top' Believes 'The Bottom' Needs Managing)

Tyler Durden's picture

Confirming the distance, and detachment, and a kind of historic decoupling between the top and the bottom in the West that did not, in more moderate recent times, exist; German President Joachim Gauck's stunning statement that "the elites are not the problem, the people are the problem," has prompted Peggy Noonan - writing in The Wall Street Journal - to call out the fact that those in power see people at the bottom as aliens whose bizarre emotions they must try to manage...

Recently I spoke with an acquaintance of Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, and the conversation quickly turned, as conversations about Ms. Merkel now always do, to her decisions on immigration. Last summer when Europe was engulfed with increasing waves of migrants and refugees from Muslim countries, Ms. Merkel, moving unilaterally, announced that Germany would take in an astounding 800,000. Naturally this was taken as an invitation, and more than a million came. The result has been widespread public furor over crime, cultural dissimilation and fears of terrorism. From such a sturdy, grounded character as Ms. Merkel the decision was puzzling—uncharacteristically romantic about people, how they live their lives, and history itself, which is more charnel house than settlement house.

Ms. Merkel’s acquaintance sighed and agreed. It’s one thing to be overwhelmed by an unexpected force, quite another to invite your invaders in! But, the acquaintance said, he believed the chancellor was operating in pursuit of ideals. As the daughter of a Lutheran minister, someone who grew up in East Germany, Ms. Merkel would have natural sympathy for those who feel marginalized and displaced. Moreover she is attempting to provide a kind of counter-statement, in the 21st century, to Germany’s great sin of the 20th. The historical stain of Nazism, the murder and abuse of the minority, will be followed by the moral triumph of open arms toward the dispossessed. That’s what’s driving it, said the acquaintance.

It was as good an explanation as I’d heard. But there was a fundamental problem with the decision that you can see rippling now throughout the West. Ms. Merkel had put the entire burden of a huge cultural change not on herself and those like her but on regular people who live closer to the edge, who do not have the resources to meet the burden, who have no particular protection or money or connections. Ms. Merkel, her cabinet and government, the media and cultural apparatus that lauded her decision were not in the least affected by it and likely never would be.

Nothing in their lives will get worse. The challenge of integrating different cultures, negotiating daily tensions, dealing with crime and extremism and fearfulness on the street—that was put on those with comparatively little, whom I’ve called the unprotected. They were left to struggle, not gradually and over the years but suddenly and in an air of ongoing crisis that shows no signs of ending—because nobody cares about them enough to stop it.

The powerful show no particular sign of worrying about any of this. When the working and middle class pushed back in shocked indignation, the people on top called them “xenophobic,” “narrow-minded,” “racist.” The detached, who made the decisions and bore none of the costs, got to be called “humanist,” “compassionate,” and “hero of human rights.”

And so the great separating incident at Cologne last New Year’s, and the hundreds of sexual assaults by mostly young migrant men who were brought up in societies where women are veiled—who think they should be veiled—and who chose to see women in short skirts and high heels as asking for it.

Cologne of course was followed by other crimes.

The journalist Chris Caldwell reports in the Weekly Standard on Ms. Merkel’s statement a few weeks ago, in which she told Germans that history was asking them to “master the flip side, the shadow side, of all the positive effects of globalization.”

Caldwell: “This was the chancellor’s . . . way of acknowledging that various newcomers to the national household had begun to attack and kill her voters at an alarming rate.” Soon after her remarks, more horrific crimes followed, including in Munich (nine killed in a McDonald’s) Reutlingen (a knife attack) and Ansbach (a suicide bomber).

*  *  *
The larger point Noonan makes is that this is something we are seeing all over, the top detaching itself from the bottom, feeling little loyalty to it or affiliation with it. It is a theme I see working its way throughout the West’s power centers. At its heart it is not only a detachment from, but a lack of interest in, the lives of your countrymen, of those who are not at the table, and who understand that they’ve been abandoned by their leaders’ selfishness and mad virtue-signalling.

On Wall Street, where they used to make statesmen, they now barely make citizens. CEOs are consumed with short-term thinking, stock prices, quarterly profits. They don’t really believe that they have to be involved with “America” now; they see their job as thinking globally and meeting shareholder expectations.

In Silicon Valley the idea of “the national interest” is not much discussed. They adhere to higher, more abstract, more global values. They’re not about America, they’re about . . . well, I suppose they’d say the future.

In Hollywood the wealthy protect their own children from cultural decay, from the sick images they create for all the screens, but they don’t mind if poor, unparented children from broken-up families get those messages and, in the way of things, act on them down the road.

From what I’ve seen of those in power throughout business and politics now, the people of your country are not your countrymen, they’re aliens whose bizarre emotions you must attempt occasionally to anticipate and manage.

In Manhattan, my little island off the continent, I see the children of the global business elite marry each other and settle in London or New York or Mumbai. They send their children to the same schools and are alert to all class markers. And those elites, of Mumbai and Manhattan, do not often identify with, or see a connection to or an obligation toward, the rough, struggling people who live at the bottom in their countries. In fact, they fear them, and often devise ways, when home, of not having their wealth and worldly success fully noticed.

Affluence detaches, power adds distance to experience. I don’t have it fully right in my mind but something big is happening here with this division between the leaders and the led. It is very much a feature of our age. But it is odd that our elites have abandoned or are abandoning the idea that they belong to a country, that they have ties that bring responsibilities, that they should feel loyalty to their people or, at the very least, a grounded respect.

I close with a story that I haven’t seen in the mainstream press...

This week the Daily Caller’s Peter Hasson reported that recent Syrian refugees being resettled in Virginia, were sent to the state’s poorest communities.

Data from the State Department showed that almost all Virginia’s refugees since October “have been placed in towns with lower incomes and higher poverty rates, hours away from the wealthy suburbs outside of Washington, D.C.”

Of 121 refugees, 112 were placed in communities at least 100 miles from the nation’s capital. The suburban counties of Fairfax, Loudoun and Arlington—among the wealthiest in the nation, and home to high concentrations of those who create, and populate, government and the media—have received only nine refugees.

Some of the detachment isn’t unconscious. Some of it is sheer and clever self-protection. At least on some level they can take care of their own.

What people really should consider doing?

Offering a FREE "See Washington D.C. Tour" to Syrian refugees.

Load them up in a chartered bus, be extra nice to them.

Drive them into the heart of D.C., and "let them out to take pictures of the American Capital".

Soon as they're all off of the bus, stomp on the gas.

How did each generation of Americans wind up with a more centralized government than the generation before it, no matter how they voted? How did we go from a state of relative freedom to having our decisions made for us by experts from afar? What should America 2.0 look like to keep the same thing from happening again? The answer to all of these questions and more is found in this one small book....

They will have to come out of their little hole sometime, and I bet that when they do, a large group of people will be waiting on the outside to deliver them a long awaited justice.

Those little holes and bunkers for politicians really piss me off. It is like the Capitan and crew of the Titanic having private luxury lifeboats for themselves. Why should there be continuity of a government that was such a disaster that they ended up hiding away while the rest of us bore the brunt for their piss-poor decision making process? Talk about creating a moral hazard -and people are seriously thinking about giving keys to the biggest nuclear arsenal on the planet to Hillary Clinton? It's a Greek tragedy without the heroism.

And re: the article. "The historical stain of Nazism, the murder and abuse of the minority"

Punishing people, or treating them differently for what their ancestors were or weren't, did or didn't is the very definition of racism; the same thing that gets Jews chased through the ghetto to shouts of "Christ killer." How many generations of Germans must be punished? We know the answer; the goal is to have no future generations of Germans left and by extention the 'cleansing' of all whites in Europe and the US, Can. Aus. etc. -only then will the anti-white, racist punishment end. Maybe the Caananites or one of the other peoples a certain group's little book boasts about genocidally wiping out to the last man, woman and child would like to provide their perspective on the situation?

And by the way, speaking of  the murder and abuse of the minority -that would be whites who have gone from 30% of the global population in 1950 to a mere 8% today. So, who is the minority abusing racist; the Germans who want to survive in Germany as Germans or someone else in this picture?

Hell is too good for Merkel (among others.)

People always twist themselves into pretzels trying to explain away with convoluted psychology what are actually very simple political calculations.

Let's examine a few facts:

1) Merkel is no dummy. You may not like her but she isn't stupid.

So why is she doing this in the face of virulent political opposition?

2) Unlike her detractors, Merkel can at least add and subtract. She can see the very bleak future already unfolding in Japan and China-- and moving swiftly to other low-birth-rate nations such as Germany. The Fatherland needs mothers and babies and the great, heroic German people are not doing their duty. She is placing a bet on enduring some short-term assimilation pain that will (she hopes) pay off in long term advantage to a Germany that kickstarts its birth rate with foreigners who will hopefully become brown Germans over time.

While this may not seem like a very good bet, what is the alternative? To watch Germany spiral down in population at a time when its social safety net will be under an otherwise impossible strain. Japan is the future for all western societies that have high social costs and dropping numbers of workers to carry the staggering burden.

In short, I think she has a plan that has almost nothing to do with compassion other than a convenient degree of lip service. She is casting around for a way to maintain Germany's way of life because otherwise it is going to crash. In a world filled with very limited and unpalatable options, she is actually displaying a rare degree of statecraft and long-term thinking. If she fails, so what? The game ends anyhow. if she wins, Germany will become even more dominant in Europe and beyond. She's playing for huge geopolitical stakes and people sputter about her stunted childhood as an explanation.

I don't agree with her plan, but I do think it is a plan, not some post-mestrual eruption of emotional angst, and I salute her willingness to roll the dice regardless of what her critics think. Admirers of Adolf Hitler should be proud of the boldness of his successor as reichskanzler. She is bold even if she is wrong.

BruntFCA's picture

This is absurd. If you are looking for workers, you don't import low IQ and illiterate people from a culture that has failed to assimilate pretty much anywhere. There is also no problem with lowering population. This has in fact happened many times before in European history.

Robots are increasingly taking the place of manual work in any event. Japan could easily manage with a population of 80million by 2100. There will be more room, lower real estate prices and less pollution.

If the elites did not siphon off huge payments in the form of debt interest people would find it easier to make ends meet and we would also not require endless "growth" to feed parasitic interest debt payments.

tarabel's picture

I didn't say that I agreed with the bet she is making.

But I will observe that the refugee population probably contains the creme de la creme of the native IQ base. The same welcoming attitude that was first practiced by the British and then by the Americans led them to the pinnacle of achievement.

By way of explanation, I would suppose that the Vietnamese population in the US is smarter than the Vietnamese population that stayed behind. And so on down the line. The Anglo-Americans robbed every other culture on earth of its brains and industriousness. The dregs and the timid stayed behind.

People forget the fear that was generated by the arrival of such alien groups as the Irish, Germans, and Poles on American shores. Eventually, it worked out well.

Merkel is, I think, betting on human capital in the long run even while everyone else plans for a disposible population and empire of robot servants. She is either a bigger idiot than the rest of them or a prophetic black swan that dares to swim against the current of modern conventional thinking.

But she is, in no case, simply seeking to do penance for the crimes of Adolf Hitler. She is doing this because she believes it to be in the ultimate best interest of Germany. She may prove to be more of a closet patriot than the rest of the NWO crowd or else she just plans on Germany being primus inter pares at the big new confabulation.

I think you analysis misses one point and why Germany robbed the pension fund.

Those immigrants are a quick boost for a year or two, but then they become one of the population and now need the same % of support across a total population and costs.

Immigration works economically providing you maintain the policy forever and why the level of immigration into the UK forced the BREXIT. UK population is 70+ million on a 76K sq mile land mass and becoming higher daily.

It is not going to get any better neither the UK government cannot cut immigration it based its whole economic model on this so to cut it means cutting the minimal growth as even the ONS actively shouts for more immigration to bolster the economy.

The elite splitting away is good it makes them easier to identify.

Mustafa Kemal's picture

Bingo, this is the plan. And they successfully did it before with Turks. They got along well. Japan should do the same but culturally they are unable to so they have at least two decades before something good happens.     If we were smart, we would do the same. Instead of buidling a wall and deporting 11M Mexicans, we should welcome them aboard and accept our economic need of their services. We should demand that they learn English and we should learn Spanish. Its quite a nice language and the people are nice.

This is intellectual idiocy writ large.

Who passed the laws detrimental to the stable nuclear family?

Who pushed feminist propaganda to have no kids or to have kids after a career?

Who pushed anti-child propaganda to have fewer children to "save Gaia"?

Who pushed the idea that sex is mechanical and not a path to higher connectedness?

These ideas and many others resulted in declining birth rates. Just as planned.

And who were the geniuses pushing these ideas knowing full well that most welfare state ponzi schemes are dependent on growth of the working population?

The idea that importing low-IQ Muslims (high levels of inbreeding) is a solution is ludicrous. It's a face-saving move if anything, and a dumb one at that.

I wish I could find the quote from a few years back of some French Elite who had just come out of a high level economic/political gaggle of the Elite, and was scornfully pointing at someone in the street and berating him to his colleagues for the ordinary citizen having a lack of knowledge about what his 'betters' were up to.

Of course, said Elite member did not confront the subject of his scorn, but remained safely among the group of Elite colleagues.

The actual World Elite may number only about 7 thousand, maximum. On a planet where 7 billion or more live.

7 billion potential bounty hunters. Who, given the machinations and attitude of their self-described 'betters', have every reason to put their heads on pikes.

IS BE's picture

Check your assumptions.  "The elite are a homogeneous group".

Grandad Grumps's picture

This article rings false for a number of reasons. To understad why, one must only consider the genesis of the so called "refugee crisis". How did the refugees beccome refugees in the first place? The obvious answer is that the elitists created them by bombing their homes and murdering their friends and family members in wars of agression in their home countries. Angela Merkel compasionate? Give me a f*cking break! She has all of the compaassion of Madeleine Albright who stated pulicly that murdering children is worth it for their parasitic globalist cause. The elitists created the wars that created the refugees. They are parasitic slime, trying to re-write their legacies.

So what is it that makes the criminally corrupt parasitic elitists inferior to God's human beings?
1 The elitists and their controllers are obsessed with heirachy and the trappings of rank. They do not understand freedom, although they use the word a lot.
2. The elitists and their controllers, while having the knowledge, of the ages, lack creatiivity
3. Most importantly the elitists and their controllers have given up their free will. All humans have a primitive reptiliaan brain (neocortex that lashes out with instinct) and a surrounding human brain that can reason and over-ride the reptilian brain. But what humans have that givess us free will, is access to the heart, which gives us access to another realm of intelligence that can oveer-ride the brain. This is what the controllers lack, what they are trying keep us from using and why we have free will and they will never have free will in their current state.

The parasitic elitists emulate and wish to be like their very knowedgable and powerful, but free will deficit masters. More is the pity.

I may not completely agree with some of the details of your comment, but I do agree with the bottom line. It has always been part of the human condition that many are born literally missing certain emotional components in their brain. If a sufficient number of these components; which are observable on an x-ray, are missing then we call that person a psychopath or sociopath. In my opinion they are therefore sub-human; not wholly human, although they consider themselves to be superior because they lack the constraints of emotion/love/empathy/compassion. This is the disconnect. Combine that with obscene wealth and the inevitable egotism/megalomania along with the sheer boredom of having nothing to do and you have the makings of a global central banker or 'elitist'. They do not pursue any of the things emotional humans value. They don't 'need' anything but a thrill. Power is thrilling... so is destruction to these pathetic parasites.

It's the psychopaths, same as always, one civilization after the next, like moths to a flame, they are attracted to positions of power and influence and are natural born predators. In the animal kindgom, we don't say that lions and bears and hyenas are 'bad', but when they look like us, yet seem willing to say or do anything to get what they want, we just don't understand.... the problem is that, though they might look like us, they aren't like us... they are predators, the smart ones work their way into the positions of power and take over, then invite all their 'friends' in to play.

This is the ponerization process. These psychos are tools of the SG to control the herd. They are totally expendable, same as the rest of the herd. The goal is to get the hell out of the herd. This is done by 'waking up' and seeing the Choice... either you choose the 'dark side' and learn to manipulate these tools of destruction for your advantage, or you chose the 'light' and learn to leave this matrix behind.. leave the herd behind, leave this s/t dimension behind.

I think I know why so many of the 'refugees' were settled so far from Warshington, into the relative wilds of central Virginia; the locals have guns, and have been buying lots more since they heard their largest regional cities had become de facto dumping grounds for potential salafists.

I have friends who live just north of Charlottesville, and they are not happy with the idea that they have become the repository for uncleared, undocumented potential terrorists, a sentiment openly expressed at a  gun store along Route 29 that I visited last year.

"From such a sturdy, grounded character as Ms. Merkel"

The Wizard's picture

Top down management is not the issue. The issue is the centralization of power into the hands of a few. Managing small units in a top down fashion is the only way a socialist or capitalist model can work. The founders provided each state with the power and authority to control its affairs. As the states grew, the power and authority should have moved to a level of counties in order to preserve the system they wished to establish. Instead, the centralists (Federalists) gained more control through their control of "money". With the banksters in control using their debt slave usury system more authority and power moved to a federal government level. Now they want to give up the sovereignty of the states and the U.S.

It's much more difficult to control corruption from afar than locally. Just follow the yellow brick road.

I don't believe for a second that the globalists at the top rungs of power like Andrea Merkel and/or Hillary Clinton are motivated by white or German guilt. The hoards that follow them blindly, sure they eat up that white guilt propaganda.

But those in power are not making the decisions to betray and destory their nations over white guilt. I believe they have all been promised very powerful seats at the table of a global government in exchange for destroying their country's sovereignty.
What's more attractive......ruling your nation with the constant threat of being ousted.......or ruling the world in a permanently entrenched position of power that will be passed down to your chlidren? They already see themselves as global rulers....what do they care who the subjects of their little fiefdom are?

Global ruling will give them the added benefits of other countries not undermining their control or of their subjects constantly trying to escape to somewhere better, cause there won't be anywhere better. They salivate over the thought of the day when they are united with their fellow power mongers and it will finally be them...united against us....their slaves.  .

Merkel blew it. She had the opportunity to show the world the future of a correctly evolving society. With medical science on the verge of increasing longevity rates by 50% (to 120 years), the child replacement requirement ratio drops to one per two Germans (less than what it is now). Her fear of German failure to reproduce at rates to sustain and grow the nation are therefore without merit and invalidate her entire rationale for encouraging refugee inflow. German society and culture will be radically changed in the coming years as a result of her administration's mis-judgement. She wants Germans to "master" the downside of globalization: harassment, crime, terror, welfare and assimilation (this is so typical of the atheistic elites to be insensitive and arrogant in their myopic viewpoints; they fail to be comprehensive enough to see far-reaching consequences and yes, their atheism is to blame). Merkel should have studied the French experience. For her to foist upon the German people some conjured-up "moral obligation" to accept a million refugees every year will be remembered as the decision that opened-wide the gates to National self-extermination.
