It's Time To Abolish The DEA And America's "War On Drugs" Gulag

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Charles Hugh-Smith via OfTwoMinds blog,

Addiction and drug use are medical/mental health issues, not criminalization/imprisonment issues.

It's difficult to pick the most destructive of America's many senseless, futile and tragically needless wars, but the "War on Drugs" is near the top of the list. Prohibition of mind-altering substances has not just failed--it has failed spectacularly, and generated extremely destructive and counterproductive consequences.

What was the result of the Prohibition of alcohol in the 1920s? Prohibition instantly criminalized 40+% of the adult populace and created hugely profitable criminal organizations.

What was the result of the "War on Drugs"? This modern-day Prohibition instantly criminalized large swaths of the adult populace and created hugely profitable criminal organizations.

If you want to increase drug use, criminalize innocent citizens and spawn gargantuan criminal organizations, then by all means declare "war" via Prohibition. The results of Prohibition/War on Drugs are so visibly perverse and so destructive that the entire enterprise is sickeningly Orwellian.

The well-paid apologists for Prohibition/War on Drugs claim that imprisoning millions of people "helps" them avoid drugs. If you think being tossed in prison for a few years "helps" people, then step right up and accept a fiver (5-year sentence) in an American prison, which is essentially a factory that produces one product: people damaged by imprisonment, deprived of their full citizenship, hobbled by a felony conviction--ex-con beneficiaries of years of tutorials by hardened criminals.

This is as Orwellian as the Vietnam War's famous "It became necessary to destroy the town to save it."

If you think throwing millions of people in prison "helps" them or society, you are either insane or you're making a living in the gulag or our sick system of "justice". If you don't think America has a "War on Drugs" Gulag, please glance at this chart of Americans in jail and prison--many for drug-related offenses:

The US population has increased about 40% since the War on Drugs started in earnest in 1980, while the prison/Gulag population has increased over 400% since 1980.

(Modest correction: The US population is 323 million, global population is 7.4 billion, so the US population is a mere 4.3% of the world population.)

Let's recall that fully legal alcohol kills tens of thousands of people annually and cripples tens of thousands more via drunk-driving accidents, domestic violence and alcohol-related diseases.

If you know any emergency room physicians and nurses, ask them how many tragic medical situations arise from alcohol abuse and how many arise from marijuana abuse. You'll hear endless tales of the terrible consequences of alcoholism and drunkenness, and essentially zero accounts of death and mayhem resulting from marijuana use/abuse.

Marijuana, a Schedule 1 drug equivalent to heroin and cocaine according to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), has never been conclusively identified as the sole cause of a single traffic fatality. I researched this a few years ago; feel free to duplicate my research.

And let's not forget the tens of thousands of annual deaths attributed to that other fully legal addictive substance, tobacco. "Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable illness and death in the United States."

The "War on Drugs" policies defining what is "dangerous" and criminalized and what is terribly dangerous yet legal are visibly nonsensical. After decades of tremendous expenditures of taxpayer funds and counterproductive manufacturing of gulags and criminal enterprises, average Americans are finally waking up to the reality that the "War on Drugs" never made sense.

The DEA actually stands for the Destruction Enforcement Agency. The DEA recently denied that marijuana has any potential health benefits, and it remains a Schedule 1 drug equivalent to heroin and cocaine in the DEA's view.

Denying the potential health benefits of cannabis is like denying gravity--yet we let the DEA deny gravity because, well, the all-powerful and all-pervasive American government loves criminalizing stuff and politicos love pushing harsh penalties for all the stuff the power-hungry state has criminalized.

Mesmerized Americans have watched countless film/TV police and court dramas, and so criminalizing the counterculture, poverty and youth in an unlimited War on Americans (oops, I mean on drugs) seems as natural as, well, throwing millions of nonviolent people in prison on trumped up charges--you know, like those other regimes concerned with "helping" people via harsh prison sentences, the Nazis and the USSR.

Sick Justice: Inside the American Gulag (book)

“Where you find the laws most numerous, there you will find also the greatest injustice.” Arcesilaus (315-241 BC)

"The more laws and restrictions there are, the poorer people become." Lao Tzu

It's time to stop the madness and abolish the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and America's "War on Drugs" Gulag. It's time to expunge the criminal records of everyone who was convicted of nonviolent drug-related crimes (using drugs, dealing nickel bags, growing marijuana, etc.) and restore their full citizenship.

Addiction and drug use are medical/mental health issues, not criminalization/imprisonment issues. What we need is a national system of community clinics devoted to helping people drawn to using addictive substances with the underlying issues that are driving them to self-medicate with self-destructive, addictive substances.

(People with positive goals, purpose, meaning and relationships have no interest in getting addicted to anything. Burdening themselves with an addiction is the last thing they want for themselves and those they care about.)

It's time to abolish the DEA, the drug-related criminal justice system and the thriving War on Drugs gulag. Yes, thousands of well-paid bureaucrats, apparatchiks and functionaries will have to seek gainful employment, but perhaps they can find employment in positions that actually help people overcome the medical/mental health issues behind their addictive drives and drug use rather than destroy their lives by throwing them in prisons with violent offenders.

One thing that always stands out to me is that it took a Amendment to the Constitution to have alcohol prohibition, but none to prohibit other drugs. Why? What changed?

MillionDollarBonus_'s picture

This one area where I disagree even with some liberals. Drugs are a danger to society, just like guns. I don't like risk - it scares me. I prefer safety. Some people prefer a risky society that lets them do as they choose and while giving them responsibility for their actions. But most of us would rather live in a society that protects us from these dangers, and prevents us from making decisions that we will regret, much like a parent will stop their child from walking into the road or playing with fire. In most cases, I and many others prefer safety over risk.

There are padded rooms in "institutions" that offer what you seek.

You cut in on the CIA's business, you are going to do serious time.

To understand the 'War on Drugs', you have to first undertand IT IS A DOUBLE SUBSIDY.

First, it is a subsidy to the drug dealers (CIA/DEA, mafia, cartels, etc.).  They get to charge a premium AND avoid competition, all because those who are good at business but not politically-connected do not want JAIL TIME.  So it is a subsidy to the inner city drug dealers (paid primarily by the middle class, yay).

Secondly, it is a subsidy to PRIVATE PRISON owners.  They get paid per inmate and never mind the slave labor they profit from, they are getting that federal money, which, if it wasn't for the War on Drugs, their private prison would not have ANY DEMAND whatsoever!

Who owns the private prisons????  Who promoted (and produced) gangsta rap?  Who has a outsized influence in the 'justice system (more accurately, justice 'industry').  Who benefits from this, and who pays for it????

ACES FULL's picture

Either legalize it all or execute all drug offenders. No middle ground, just make up your fucking mind. s/..I think.

newdoobie's picture

I keep hearing about all these millions of poor people jailed for smoking weed. But when I try to get a count, nothing comes up. I checked the fed prison stats and they have no one sentenced to jail for weed possession.

ACES FULL's picture

Sorry, gotta call bullshit on you bro. Most of the time they pin a "conspiracy" on you but there are most certainly people serving Fed sentences for possession of weed. Now,how MUCH weed they had in their possession may be what you were getting at. Small timers go to State prison,MANY are there for possession of relatively small amounts of "mota".

Dabooda's picture

And let's not forget the whole "asset forfeiture" scam, which allows cops to steal more from the public than all other thieves put together -- all based on drug war.  Cops have a vested interest in keeping drugs illegal.  God forbid that they should be restricted to enforcing laws that protect us from theft and violence.

Herd Redirection Committee's picture

The answer to who first promoted Gangsta Rap would be: Jerry Heller (of Jewish ethnicity).

fishpoem's picture

This dude knows. He's in one.

It's time to end drug prohibition.  In addition to all the prisoners created and lives ruined.  Think about how much evil the illegal drug trade funds.  You have cartels more powerful than the governments of the countries they reside.   Not to mention the Satanic Globalists skim off the top (see HSBC drug money scandal, oh and lets not forget the CIA)  and use that money to promote all their evil wars and black projects around the world.

END DRUG PROHIBITION NOW!

The Gun Is Good's picture

Totally. And with the drug war came amped-up RICO laws and civil asset forfeiture ("Authorities" just love to practice extortion and steal shit!).

Captain Chlamydia's picture

That will not happen for some time...

The 5 groups that rule the world (Big Banks, Megacorporations, Organised Crime, Religion, Weapon industry) hold all the political leverage to make more money from keeping drugs illegal. Does this sound familiair:

1. Weapons are sold to some 2nd or 3rd world country

2. a Conflict breaks out, country is in ruins

3. UN peace keepers arrive or the US meddles itself in the conflict (or the US instigated the problem, whatever)

4. Stories abound about child rape, abuse and abduction of women, drug use skyrockets, children of 14 are high on dope toting machine guns

5. The country now has to rebuild it through IMF loans, the Big Building Industry arrives and whatever resources are in the ground, they feed off it

6. The country is now owned through its Debt by the Banks

One of the most important lessons, was something I learnt from Accounting 101.  There are TWO forms of ownership.  EQUITY, iow shareholders, and.... DEBT.   They are BOTH the owner, and yet, we only list the equity holders as the owners... Hmmm....

Also, if you look at how NEW money is CONJURED into existence, we have two choices as a society, it can be issued as EQUITY, or it can be issued as DEBT!  Guess which one the moneymasters decided on, and didn't even tell people there was a choice?!?!?!

"Drugs are a danger to society, just like guns. I don't like risk - it scares me. I prefer safety."

I agree.  But this is EXACTLY why we need to change both the drug laws as well as the elites in power that wrote these laws.

The drug laws must be changed because we have a drug monopoly that secures a monopoly for the most dangerous drug to other people then the user : alcohol

http://www.bbc.com/news/health-11665560  (1 min 43 sec interview with professor Nutt - Britains leading drug researcher)

If You want safety You want legalization of those drugs that do not reduce people's judgement as severely as alcohol does. For example there is a strong connection between LEGAL alcohol and murders while the connection between ILLEGAL marijuana and murder is at the most very weak. I think that when marijuana  is legalized it increases safety because it

1. Reduces criminality (There is a substantial link between criminality and murders)

2. Reduces murders because alcohol will lose most of its market when less lethal drugs like marijuana, are legalized. Without the support of its international UN drug monopoly the alcohol industry will rapidly become of minor importance. Simply because the prohibited drugs, if legalized, are both better, more interesting to use and less dangerous both to the individual as well to the society and to you personally.

The UN drug laws proves how dangerous it is to exercise a monopoly no matter with how sweet words it is motivated.
And the only other alternative would be to prohibit also the most dangerous drug: alcohol.  But do we really want that ? Anyway it is not needed, All we need is to legalize better and less lethal drugs and people will prefer them and thus keep their health and you will keep Your safety as alcohol will hardly be used any more.

And once the highly profitable alcohol industry will go down the drain it will be more easy to change the elites in power that support the alcohol monopoly without regard to our health and safety.

MasterBaitor's picture

"much like a PARENT"? You are precisely what is wrong with half of American society ...

scsherman's picture

Freedom and personal responsibility go hand in hand. If you prefer safety then go live in a society that does not value freedom. So long as you conform to the rules they establish for your protection, then you should be fine. But step out of line, and see how safe you really are. There is nothing risky or unsafe about smoking cannabis. Any risk from other drugs can be mitigated, just like most pharmaceutical drugs. Do you take aspirin or NSAIDs for headaches? If you do, you are engaging in extremely risky behaviour because hundreds of people die every year from them, while none have ever died from cannabis in the entire history of the known and documented world which has been using it for at least thousands of years.

Drug laws don't make the society safer, any more than Prohibition did. They make it less safe and more risky.

Portugal completely decriminalized drug use and the crime rates actually fell. Overdose deaths and HIV transmission dropped like a rock.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/portugal-decriminalised-d...

Rewarding criminals by making substances difficult to get only raises the street price. It doesn't limit the supply, which will always increase to meet demand. All that changes is the price -- offering a hugely increased reward to those who provide the supply (which itself is more risky for those who use it).

It is a caricature of a caricature of your usual caricature of liberal nonsense.  It's the brain drain I tell ya. Ya just can't get good trolls any more.

HopefulCynic's picture

You do not disagree with liberals about anything, that is the liberal mentality, to decide for others, and force their decisions, likes, views on others. Fuck the liberal mentality.

Besides Drug incarcerations only provide the opportunity for lesser criminals and non criminals to become professional and career criminals.

A drug user that would not be a criminal is criminalised by the system, he gets out of jail with contacts, and handy criminal knowledge, with a bleak prospect for job, and a better future life, (Pursuit of Happiness destroyed by liberal), so he or she has little options left, be part of the system and work hard fro basically no chance of ever having a better life because of an undeserved criminal record, or run drugs and do other stuff that can give him or her something better. 90 times out of a 100 the forced in to being criminal person will chose more crime, because it is the better option.

Fuck your liberal illogical, idiotic, nefarious mentality.

HopefulCynic's picture

Please just anser me this, are you a master of sarcasm, because it seems you are and I have met a few, but I also have met a shit load of idiots that actually believe and think like what you wrote, and I am not kidding, people actually believe that bullshit, most liberals in fact.

amazing news on ZH about Feds abandoning private prisons today - the way forward is to encourage and promote the benefits of expanded consciousness - the medicines and miracles are very real

Marijuana should be legal. That being said...

If you want to declare war on drugs, declare war. Not some pitiful political police action. Seal the border, meds pushed by pharmaceutical companies for runny noses used commonly to draft for the zombie apacolypse should be taken off store shelves. Dealers should be held accountable, not have their hands held by sympathetic libtards.

Example of STUPIDITY! Patrick Jason Woodall, Hot Springs, AR

You can see this guys entire criminal history here: https://caseinfo.aoc.arkansas.gov/cconnect/PROD/public/ck_public_qry_cpty.cp_personcase_setup_idx

This guy has been sentenced to 107 years, 2 months, 20 days, since 2009.

He is currently being held for Theft by Receiving over $5k, possession of meth x2, possession of sched IV narcotics, paraphenalia

But he committed these crimes while on bail for Forgery

But he committed Forgery while on bail for FIVE counts of Residential Burglary

Here is this meth addicts history. Misery loves company and meth addicts like these should be SOS before they turn your kids into their zombies.

Here is his history... It's not the drugs, it's what drugs like meth make people do to acquire them...

I'm trying to delete that thread. It pasted far more than I wanted to. Won't let me /delete it. Not that it's not good information, it's just a bit long of a read... I'm requesting an administrator delete it or at least cut it down in size...

HopefulCynic's picture

Fuck off! You just messed up the thread, edit the fucking comment will you, delete everything.

Again, Upton Sinclair comes to mind: "It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it."

We have a winner a workforce of 2 500 000 that works for $5.00 per day you'd be amazed what gets made in prison just ask Mc Donalds,Verizon,IBM,Intel,Lucent,Starbucks,Pfizer etc etc...it hasn't been about drugs for a long time.

Dodgy Geezer's picture

It's time to abolish the DEA, the drug-related criminal justice system and the thriving War on Drugs gulag.

Er...just how do you expect to do this?
