Merkel Accused Of "Fearmongering" After Telling Germans To Stockpile Food "In Case Of Catastrophe"

Tyler Durden's picture

The German government's civil defence plan, which as reported yesterday urged Germans to stockpile enough food and water for ten and five days, respectively "in case of an attack or catastrophe", has been strongly condemned by the opposition party Die Linke (the Left Party), who accused Merkel that her proposal could result in a public frenzy. “By bringing out new plans all the time, the government could make people afraid people and even lead them to panic buy,” Dietmar Bartsch, co-chair of Die Linke told the Rheinische Post on Monday.

The government shouldn’t be adding to the sense of fear on a daily basis, Bartsch added cited by the Local, although we would note that the government could have easily avoided the daily "sense of fear" had it simply blocked Merkel's "open door" refugee policy in the first place

Bartsch was responding to Interior Ministry plans published in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on Sunday, advising people to stockpile food and water.

The plan, which makes civilian backing of troops a priority while boosting the resilience of buildings and increasing capacity in the healthcare system, is due to be adopted by the government on Wednesday.

Merkel’s government is updating Germany’s civil-defense guidance for the first time since 1995 to reflect evolving threats, according to the Interior Ministry.  It follows the long-term reassessment of risks including terrorism and natural disasters based on a broad analysis, not any specific threat events, ministry spokesman Johannes Dimroth says.

Dimroth added that the update is a “logical consequence” of developments since the mid-1990s, which were marked by sense of reduced risk after end of Cold War. The proposal is also Germany’s first civil defence strategy since the end of the Cold War.

So far during August, Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere has made two much-debated announcements on proposals believed to have been developed in response to three bloody attacks in Bavaria in July, two of which had Islamist links, and the third of which, a gun spree in Munich, involved the deaths of ten people. The teenager responsible for the Munich gun spree is not believed to have had any political motivation for his actions.

In the first raft of proposals, de Maiziere threatened to strip citizenship from jihadi fighters who have dual citizenship, as well as completely doing away with dual nationality.

Last week he also came out in favor of a partial ban on the burqa in public spaces, saying that showing one’s face “belongs to our culture.

Most notably, however, in late July after the spike of terrorist attacks on German soil, de Maiziere ordered increased security presence at airports, train stations and other public places, and added the"German army can play a domestic role in special cases." Which is ironic, because while Germans may or may not be freaking out over the new civil defence directive, what they probably should be more concerned about is that the government can now deploy the army domestically in what, in its opinion, represents a special case.

Wow, she finally comes out with something that will help the regular German, I mean aside from deporting all the slime, and she gets ridiculed.

keeps everybody from asking the probing questions about just exactly why this is even an issue

Why do the Democrats and German Socialist Parties keep talking about Saving the Middle Class and Re-engineering Europe, if everything's so Great?

Haus-Targaryen's picture

Ahhhh die Linke.  It means "the Left" in Germany, but they aren't the SJW morons you have in the US (that is the Green party).

The Linke do have good ideas, however for every one good idea they have -- they have nine shit ones.  Still better than the Grüne, where for every shit idea they have, they have an addition eight more.

How does any rational person think giving advice to have 10 days food and water on hand is fearmongering? Simply political showmanship I guess.

Infocat's picture

Leftoids have such small amygdalas that preparation for any sort of crisis looks like fearmongering to them! lol

BeanusCountus's picture

I think she might want to find a new PR guy/gal.

ACES FULL's picture

Think the people suffering from the floods in Louisiana might be happy to have food and clean water stored. Above the waterline of course.

BeanusCountus's picture

True. Will re-think. Only way she has not just committed political suicide is if she knows its coming.

"How does any rational person think giving advice to have 10 days food and water on hand is fearmongering? Simply political showmanship I guess."

It is fearmongering because Germany by constitution is demanded to behave peaceful, keep their soldiers in-country and never again start war.

Giving attention to that, media people - I refuse to call them journalists - should already sit in prison by the dozens for warmongering.

Furthermore in September we have elections in 3 of our 16 countries, always a good reason for some fearmongering. But remembering the last ones, I am sure ever more Germans know, that Merkel and her ilk have to go, to come back to the constitutional values.

The Left is full of morons in all of its forms!

Nobodys Home's picture

I'm not a Mormon but I will give them credit for kicking the US gov's ass back in the day, as well as being smart enough to realize their peoples food and resource needs. Kind of like the way the Russian jews did in the 1800's. But I suspect no undercurrents of rebellion nowadays. Too bad! We could use some self sufficient, hard working, dedicated, hard to infiltrate people in the future.

edit: Oops you said morons, not Mormons :)

The left ass wipe car burners in Berlin are a far different kettle of fish as you know.  partially suported by CDU et al money and violently opposing any sensible discussion of the most important issues facing the post modern europe.

You guys have to deal with liberal/socialist/progressive/democrats (communists) too huh?

Same thing down south. There's hope for mental sanity of one part of the "Left". And there's the Greens.

Nobodys Home's picture

That's one more good idea than Hitlery has!

It's far more the democrats (most are unknowing communists) than the green...although the green are sjws too.

It's ridiculous to criticize any suggestions, or minimal requirements, for food and water storage which come along.  Hell, no one has accused the LDS (Mormons) of fearmongering for the one, to three, through twelve months’ worth of food storage:

I've got three months right now (I'm an Atheist, by the way) and I'm working my way up towards six.  Sporadically, for one entire day, I will use only what I've stored.  One learns a lot about what is missing and/or what else can be added (e.g. – spices, mixers, kitchen tools, etc.) to the store to make it more pleasurable should the unlikely event occur when they must be used.

I strongly urge others to do the same.  Most people (mistakenly) assume that they have at least a week or two's worth of food on hand.  To them, I suggest that they multiply the number of people in their houisehold by 1,500, and then add up all of the calories in the food that they think that they have enough of so that they can determine the true number of days’ worth of food that they have on hand --- many are surprised how far off they actually are from their mind's prior estimates.

Oh, and a small surgical kit (with sutures), liquor (to ease pain), and wound disinfectants and cleaners as well are a critical component of the stored items.

Nobodys Home's picture

1500 calories is fine if you're doing nothing but under stress 2000 is the MINIMUM. Protein needs to be the main ingredient...but carbs and fats should not be overlooked. FIBER, Vitamins and minerals as well as salt need to be included. FLUIDS are the most important. 3-7 days lose it and die....

There was a study of hunger strikes at Gitmo that concluded you can go 61 days without food.

Your medical list is at least looking at what might happen over bandaids and firstaid cream but grievously far from anything real...People underestimate this....they're used to the healthcare system. You will need a HUUUGE medical kit, but not really a lot of pharmaceuticals.

I've bought provisions from LDS store....They don't have a big selection but their prices are GREAT!  (I'm not a Mormon) Here's the link:

Keepon keeping on! You are on the right track!

Verlorenes Geld's picture

You are SO right.  The 1,500 number is primarily used to demonstrate just how under-stocked most people are after they actually total their existing non-stored inventory.  For me, I've been using 3,500 for myself because I'm open to the possibility to taking in someone out of sympathy/empathy for their situation.

Again, you're right about the medical supplies.  I'm moving beyond the gauze, bandages, tape, and previously mentioned supplies and ordered several Israeli and QuikClot Bandages, along with some slings and braces.  However, any supplies beyond that would greatly exceed my medical knowledge and abilities.  So, I have networked with a local Doctor, along with others, in a desert SHTF planning group wherein we, collectively, have a wide berth of skillsets and supplies covered.

I appreciated the link, too!  I'm always glad to hear others having a practical point to survival, and pleasant living, plans should something unlikely occur --- AND to receive tips and advise from them ... so, THANKS!

Nobodys Home's picture

I stock up planning for 10 people. You need other people in order to survive.  I'm an RN so my med bag is well stocked. If the shtf you need at least 2-3 people awake and alert 24/7. Be careful of sympathy/empathy. It's nice to think that way but ...You need to look out for you and your own.

If you take someone in, you are responsible for them after that. If they have nothing to give back to the group you just doubled your own work. It's great to think of life and morals/ethics/kindness going on as it has (although that, even now, is not always so altruistic for many in this cruel world) In a short term situation that's all well and good. If it's going to be a long term situation, everyone needs to be useful and not a burden. Not to say humanity should be tossed out the window, but there should be input to the group by everyone. (Example: Even a quadriplegic has a mind and ideas)

It's great you have a community to fall back on and support. Nice to see people looking out for each other.

Here's another place I buy a lot of things...I use some of them now....It's got a lot of products. Decent prices but you have to shop wisely. Some things are cheaper at other places. I've spent a lot here...Their sales are sometimes amazing. I watch them for special buys and sales and have gotten some really good deals. They also have group specials for some products and if you buy any group special products shipping is free for the entire order... (like if you buy 12 cans of something, although selections in that category are limited, but do change. You have to keep an eye out). Shipping charges aren't bad either... Emergency Essentials. Their website is I'm not affiliated, just a customer....Walmart also sells some of their products

I'd also suggest Walmart online. here's an example...10 year canned meat...great quality...a bit pricey but excellent. I eat this as part my current diet.

26 lbs of long term storage hard white wheat for 16 bucks

Anyway.....One of these days I'll develop a website "" I own the domain name but haven't done anything with it yet.

Good luck! I'm typing to much for this venue :)

Nice! I live near a lot of water...filters and jugs work for me:)

I recommend the Lifestraw Family filter...will do 4700 of the few that filter to the virus level...$50 to $80 depending on where you buy it. (I too am an atheist) Bad bad people we are!

From a friend, living in Ireland...working for Apple....and about to move back to Germany...

"I am a little frightened to go back to Germany. Why are they bringing that up now, the news in Germany? Its very peculiar. People were afraid before and now even more. Do they know something, the government. why is Apple asking me to log my mobile number in the system, after 3 years. They never did before. And my manager said: "In case something happens, you will receive a notification, that you have to hide." That kind of vocabulary was never used before.

I think Erdogan is crazy, I also think Merkel does not tell us everything.

I think its fairly easy to buy a gun in Germany, but people can't handle that. They are not used to it."

Gonna get real....
