Mainstream Media Admits It May "Never Recover" From 2016 Election

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Carey Wedler via,

In a revealing statement that flew largely under the radar earlier this month, the mainstream media admitted it would never recover from its irresponsible and negligent coverage of the 2016 presidential election. A recent column published in the New York Post referred to the media’s reporting as the complete collapse of American journalism as we know it.

In his article for the Post, Fox News contributor Michael Goodwin discussed the media’s pro-Clinton bias – one recognized by supporters of virtually every other presidential candidate, from Bernie Sanders to Jill Stein to Gary Johnson and, of course, Donald Trump. Even Americans who don’t necessarily have a horse in the 2016 race notice the slant.

By torching its remaining credibility in service of Clinton,” Goodwin wrote, “the mainstream media’s reputations will likely never recover, nor will the standards. No future producer, editor, reporter or anchor can be expected to meet a test of fairness when that standard has been trashed in such willful and blatant fashion.”

Indeed, he is correct in this regard. The Clinton machine has effectively infiltrated corporate media. Last year, the Intercept reported MSNBC failed to disclose that multiple pundits who spoke favorably about Clinton were actually employees of a consulting firm hired by her campaign.

More recently, embarrassing DNC leaks released in July revealed DNC officials attempted to craft narratives painting Sanders in a negative light to undermine his campaign. They also organized a secret fundraiser with the Washington Post and were careful to keep it under the radar. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, the now-disgraced former chairman of the DNC, along with one of her colleagues, personally contacted MSNBC to complain when one of its anchors criticized Clinton and suggested she drop out. Per a “deal” with the DNC, one POLITICO writer sent an article critical of Clinton to the DNC for suggestions before he sent it to his editor.

Though Goodwin has previously implied he does not support the Republican nominee, he still arguesAny reporter who agrees with Clinton about Trump has no business covering either candidate.”

There is no question the mainstream media has sided with the political establishment in its decision to craft narratives that paint Clinton as a competent leader who is the only option in the face of a catastrophic Trump presidency. Indeed, in spite of Clinton’s lack of popularity among the general population, the media continues to suggest she is the only thing standing between America and its descent into fascism.

While the degree of negative press Trump has received is undeniably staggering, Goodwin failed to recognize — at least in this article — that like Clinton, Trump is wildly unpopular and dangerous. Though mainstream media is undoubtedly fervent in their coverage of Trump’s absurdity, it is arguably irresponsible not to point out the gaping problems with his xenophobic, violent, non-factual rhetoric.

But therein lies the problem: rarely does the mainstream media devote as much time to questioning Hillary Clinton, her rhetoric, and her policies. As the Hill noted earlier this month:

Some would argue that Trump deserves it because of controversial rhetoric or falsehoods around X, Y, Z… [But] when looking at honesty/trustworthy numbers, it’s Clinton who — in the eyes of the public — has more issues in that department.

As Politifact documented, Clinton has lied on multiple occasions, and the media’s lack of outrage and refusal to focus on her dishonesty lends credence to Goodwin’s assertions.

Goodwin is openly right-wing. He appears regularly on Fox News and has previously asserted President Obama is not doing enough to combat Islamic extremism. And though he is correct in pointing out the pro-Clinton bias, his employment at the New York Post and ongoing appearances on Fox — two icons of mainstream media — obliterate any chance of his media criticisms being taken seriously.

The New York Post has been owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. since 1976. In that time, the Post has developed a reputation for sensationalism and inaccurate reporting. While they deserve mild credit for covering controversial issues like police brutality and the secrecy and corruption surrounding the infamous 28-pages of the 9/11 commission report, a long line of ethical controversies mars their credibility — so much so that even a Fox News anchor has questioned the paper’s legitimacy.

Little needs to be said about Fox Newsout of touch, delusional take on the world, though it is worth noting that according to an analysis by Politifact, 58 percent of Fox News’ content is mostly false, false, or “pants on fire.”

The reputations of the New York Post and Fox News precede Goodwin’s argument, no matter how true it may be that the media is in Hillary Clinton’s pocket. What his assertion should have contended is that American journalism was a lost cause long before the 2016 election — something Americans have increasingly and rightfully begun to recognize.

From the corporate media’s flagrantly irresponsible coverage of the Iraq War during the Bush years to the media’s ongoing blackouts of relevant news in favor of more superficial, inconsequential stories, Goodwin’s assertion that 2016 is the year American journalism died is as factual as the content churned out by Fox News.

2016 has merely been its funeral procession.

Forget the media! The US Postal Office is designing two new stamps for both Nominees - one for Trump, The Trump Stamp, and another one for Hillary, The Tramp Stamp.   ;-)

Many years ago, in high school journalism class, I was taught that journalists held politicians accountable.  In fact, the media used to be known as The Fourth Estate.  However, today, I see no evidence of this.  I only see the media as tools of propagandists and sellers of advertising and advertisers' products and services.  Nobody in the mass media appears ready, willing, or able to ask our politicians any questions of substance.

No American with an IQ above 75 beleives MSM anymore.

The absolute worst are the NPR reporters interviewing other NPR reporters as subject matter experts.

They are all going to journalism hell, and there is a special circle reserved for the likes of Cokie Roberts, who seems to have pioneered this particular form of pure evil.

And she has done this, for the most part, on the taxpayer's dime.

There's actually a very simple explanation for this. The media has always been in the pocket of the establishment.  The internet and alternative media have made it possible for more people to wake up and see it and the establishment media have responded by simply doing the only thing they can do and that's turn up the volume.  Just like the Federal Reserve only has one tool money printing

If the media were ever to tell the truth the entire system would fall apart.  If the Fed were ever to stop printing money the entire system would fall apart.  They will continue to do what they do no matter how f****** absurdly obvious it becomes because that's all they got

Exactly what is the wellspring of "American exceptionalism" again?

BTW "Cokie" Roberts' father was congressman Hale Boggs.

Boggs was a member of the Warren Commission and he died in a plane crash.

Pleeze don't get me started on NPR. They have gone so downhill it's not funny. the entire morning show is One Big Cluster Fuck to American Integrity and Common Sense.

Must be 100% funded by the DNC and the Clinton Foundation and neocon/mic groups.

Hard to beleive anyone with common sense listens to any of their morning shows.

If you have 3.5 hours to spare try to watch this yootoob documentary ("The Century of Self") on propaganda that heavily mentions Edward Bernays:

It's very instructive.

The Gun Is Good's picture

Precisely. The author refers to infiltration of the MSM by the "Clinton Machine;" but this credits the Clintons with having too much power, and it ignores the control the elite possess over both parties in the fake right v. left paradigm. It side-steps the real issue that MSM serves the deep state.

While admitting some of the guilt of the MSM, this author is merely another useless partisan fuck who still can't escape an opportunity to bash Trump... LOL! while making the point that everyone else is doing it.

(Thing is, we will remember the names of scumbag "journalists," editors, directors, etc. of the .gov propaganda system, and those heads will roll, too, along with all the rest of 'em....)

DocBerg's picture

This article is also biased against Trump.  So, it falls into the same pit as the rest of the MSM.  The media are in the pocket of the Establishment, and this is becoming increasingly obvious now.  They just promote the different factions making up the Establishment.  As a result of this, populists and nationalists now realize that everything they read in the magazines and in the newspapers, and in most on-line news sources, and that they see on TV "news" are all lies.  This is what took the British Establishment by surprise in the Brexit referendum.  I expect it will also happen here in our upcoming elections.

rainingFrogs's picture

"There's actually a very simple explanation for this. The media has always been in the pocket of the establishment."

That be true.  In the not so distant past, media was never accountable for what they said, and there was no easy way to validate it.  Now, you can instantly reference other sources (typically alternative media) to validate "facts" and opinions.  BS becomes obvious, and they are being called on it.  Journalists are mostly too lazy to do any real journalism.  And media bias is so blatant that they have no credibility.

I can't imagine it would be possible for a "trusted" news personality such as Walter Cronkite to exist anymore.  Certainly not in MSM.  Although I haven't done any diligence, I don't doubt that he and other media icons of that era routinely knowingly served up propoganda.  Certainly, going back to look at Vietnam War coverage would reveal massive complicity by MSM in propogating the war, and covering up atrocities.  Then it may have been seen as being patriotic.  Now, not so much.

The related issue is that alt-media is able to turn over so many of the rocks malfeasance and incompetence existed under.  Case in point, John Kerry recently suggested that media focus on terrorism is a problem.  His underlying frustration is that US activities domestically and abroad are now under intense scrutiny.  US foreign policy is quite visible, despite the administration's efforts to keep it opaque and invisible.  You can't lie your way through as you could in the good old days.  To keep misadventure under wraps, the administration pursues the aggressive prosecution/persecution of whistle-blowers.  While the administration continues to execute a destructive/incompetent foreign policy, its abilty to do so in the shadows is pretty well over.  The big question is, what's next?

Meatier Shower's picture

What's next?

On Oct 1st the UN is set to take control of the internet. Then TPTB will be set to censor alt media sites like Breibart, WND, Drudge and Infowars.

Once again their malfeasance will be cloaked in the shadows as they clam p down on the information channels.

If they are allowed to get away with it that is...

rainingFrogs's picture

And the DHS (aka "Deep State") is set to oversee US elections, i.e. control the democratic process at the ballot box.

They are closing in, folks.  And its all being done in plain sight.

Valis-Watson's picture

Since I can remember, the majority of Americans have been swallowing the MSM whole to one degree or another. In the 1960's the MSM was literally considered to be SACRED. I was a child, but I can remember that the world stopped every night when Walter Cronkite came on to tell everyone "and that's the way it is." (!). Cronkite was nearly everyone's "rock." That control method has been tapped, of course. Fast forward, while the Internet might well be the 'establishment's' tool to corral and label each and every one of us, it has had the additional unintended consequence (always, always there is an equal and opposite reaction appropriate to the level of conscious/unconscious deception involved.. we plebes call this "drama") of bringing like-minded and not so like-minded people together. Even the most ridiculous, bizarre, and actually just stupid collections of individuals have had various levels of like, "awakenings," (however stupid and insignificant this will seem to a lot of us) and one can see it happening on Internet sites and online groups everywhere. There are concepts and ideas that would have NEVER been considered by boatloads of these people before that are just seeping in. Yeah, it is often extremely contentious and messy and childish and stupid...most of the population is not anywhere near the level that you guys are, intellectually and otherwise, on this site. But this is happening. Ultimately, Imo, the big picture is about each and every one of us ditching our various crutches anyway (not easy or everyone would do it haha.) Not sure, but facing reality as it exists and not taking the spoon as it is easy-peasy presented to us in a million different flavors, seems to be a big part of the process. Roadblocks everywhere.

SWRichmond's picture

I am also old enough to remember Cronkite on black-and-white TV.  The media then were masters of framing the debate.  What Tom Woods now calls the three-by-five card of allowable opinion.  By identifying the extent of the debate as either pro-establishment or merely slightly pro-establishment the media was able to define acceptable opinion and thus defne everything else as conspiracy theory.

Fact-checking by the average person is too easy now and the debate framing no longer works.  Once someone finds for themselves conspiracy theories becoming conspiracy facts the blinders are off and they stopped believing anything the mainstream media says.

As a youth during the 1974 oil hoax I noticed that NBC nightly news was sponsored by Exxon.

And NBC proudly stated that fact at the start of every newcast.

It struck me as odd.

I occasionally turn on PBS News Hour and see them doing the exact same thing with mostly a bunch of women sitting around a table talking tabloid trash against Trump (i.e., what stupid thing did he say today) then switching to Hitlery with nothing but glowing praise of how she is elevating women and children.

This "4th Estate" hypocrisy would be hilarious if it weren't so sad. But, given the the MSM is wholly owned by TPTB, I expect no true alternatives to ever emerge from them.

It seems that nobody in that position will ever again be "as mad as hell, and not going to take it anymore!"

While I agree with the percentage of lies, your second statement is unfortunately not true. While the number of people knowing about the lies is growing (manily on the internet), most don't even watch the news. Also, IQ has very little to do with seeing the truth. Take for instance the number of otherwise intellegent people who still think there is a magic guy that has control over their souls.

Local slumlord wouldn't make necessary repairs to the building, so the tenents went to the press.

Amazingly, the press figured out that a city council member owned the building!

He bought it (at a fat discount),  BECAUSE HE KNEW BEFORE EVERYONE ELSE, that the city would be buying it (at a fat premium) in a few years, to domolish it, in order to put in a new he didn't want to spend any money on repairs.

The "Press" left it at that.

shamus001's picture

Thats pa-rtially because the state department rarely gives out press coverage to anyone that isnt in their pocket to paint the story as they would have the population believe.  It's far easier for DNC to give press coverage to a puppet news outlet and it is financially viable for a news outlet to be a puppet not only because of the financial support they get, but because of the unprecedented coverage the federal government gives them- and thus the "inside story"

do you think Bush admin would have let Fox news cover the war if they were independantly minded and actually raising questions?

Things that go bump's picture

I laughed about the journalists "embedded" with the troups to give news coverage. We only saw what was carefully crafted to sculpt our opinions - bombs exploding in the distance. It looked like firewords. It was beautiful. They will never make the sort of mistake that was made in Vietnam when independent journalists displayed the carnage for all to see. Do you remember the picture of the naked child running down a dirt road screaming? She'd had her clothes burned off by napalm. Do you remember the picture of a bound man taken at the moment of his summary execution? It captured the moment the bullet entered his brain. We have seen nothing of what war really is since then, because it robbed the government of its national support.

The media has always been criminal propaganda.  It got worse in early 1960s with Operation Mockingbird.  TV is a control device.

Seriously - F TV, Hollywood, media and journalists.  They all deserve the guilottine.  I have some dumb ass millenial teling me how they are screwed yet the idiot loves TV, Netflix and Hollywood shit like a dumb little sheep.

If you want to watch a good documentary - look for the one on youtube about Mr. Graham of Washington Post.   He was the husband.  I forget his first name - Edward?  WA Post has always been a C*I*A mouthpiece.  He went off the reservation with a girlfriend and was blowing the lid of JFKs affairs and the C*I*AA control of the media.  He was also divorcing the wife.  She had him committed then he killed himself at home - most likely nail gun.  These people are evil devils.

Wa Post got all the nixon info because he wanted to have tarriffs and his bosess who probably control C*I*A** are the Rockefellers. David was an OSS agent in WW2.

Who was the errand boy leaking the info to Wa Post?  The real Deep Throat?  Most likely George Bush or he was in the loop.
