Martin Armstrong On "The Coming Dark Age"

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Martin Armstrong via,

Over the years you have made several comments about directional changes and have alluded to the idea that a crossroads is coming in that we will either enter another Dark Age or we will see the light towards greater liberty and freedom. More recently, you mentioned the year 2032 as a critical year in this regard.

In addition, you have mentioned that Trump winning the election would postpone the inevitable chaos, but that HRC winning would speed it along.

In terms of the distal effects of the November election on 2032, does either Trump or Clinton winning increase the likelihood of entering a Dark Age over something more hopeful? Should we be attempting to kick the can down the road or should we get it over with?

Hillary is just corrupt and rotten to the core. She represents everything that is wrong with our political economy. Politicians no longer care about the people. Every election promises “change” in some variation.

That is admitting something is broken, but it always comes down to the same thing – it’s just about them.

Indeed, it was Mark Twain who put it best during the last century: “If voting made any difference, they wouldn’t let us do it.” We must understand that this has been an age old battle between the rulers and the people. In Athens where Democracy was born, they constantly fought to seize power back and even made Pericles stand trial. Government has always sought to bribe the people creating a welfare state. The Romans knew that the way to power was to promise everything but give them bread and circuses (sport games) and they could maintain power. It was Decimus I?nius Iuven?lis, commonly known as Juvenal, who was a Roman poet active in the late 1st and early 2nd century AD that wrote that phrase:

… Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions — everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses

[…] iam pridem, ex quo suffragia nulli / uendimus, effudit curas; nam qui dabat olim / imperium, fasces, legiones, omnia, nunc se / continet atque duas tantum res anxius optat, / panem et circenses. […]

(Juvenal, Satire 10.77–81)

Nothing has changed. Many people can name every person on some sports team but cannot name their political minister, congressman, or whatever lofty title they call themselves. The judge in a courtroom demands to be called “honorable” as do all public servants. They make a mockery of the very word.

We are approaching the grave danger of a Dark Age beginning from the aftermath of 2032. Hopefully, I will be gone by then and will not have to face this horrible event. Yet Dark Ages are reoccurring events throughout history and in all cultures. The Greeks endured their between the Homeric Age that marked the end of the Mycenaean civilization around 1100 BC, to the first signs of the Greek cities (poleis) rising again in the 6th century BC (508–322 BC). It was during the 9th century BC (900-801BC) that we begin to see the rise of great cities outside of Greece including Carthage, which was founded by the Phoenicians.

Japan went through its Dark Age, which also lasted about 600 years and the same impact was endured in Europe with the collapse of Rome in 476AD. Dark Ages seem to come in units of 3 so they are 300 or 600 years. The cause is always political corruption.

Japanese-Debasement 760-958AD

In the case of Japan, each new emperor devalued the money in circulation with a decree that it was worth 10% of his new coins. There was no intrinsic value since they were bronze or iron. This process led people NOT to hoard money. Chinese coins were sought after since they would not be devalued. Eventually, nobody would accept Japanese coins and they ceased to be issued for 600 years. People used Chinese coins or bags of rice.

The Roman Monetary Crisis that saw silver vanish by 268AD, was naturally followed by an attempt to restore the monetary system. A new bronze coin was introduced in 295AD known as the Follis. Again, one 52 year cycle saw its collapse from over 16 grams to under just 2 grams.

By the time you come toward the very end of the Roman Empire, you rarely find any bronze and when you do, it is less than an American penny. Coinage is debased because of the corruption in government. Those who think restoring the gold standard would do anything are wrong. Such monetary reforms appear repeatedly throughout history with little lasting impact. The system as we know it is always doomed to failure simply because we are satisfied as a whole with bread and circuses and let politicians run wild in their greed. Hillary is the example for everyone to see.

I will gather all the accounts and this is on my bucket-list of books to complete. We do have a choice. We can understand what is coming and WHY, and perhaps take that first step out of darkness and move into the light of a realistic political system that ends the bribing of citizens and this eternal battle of political corruption. We need a REAL democracy without career politicians. Only then can we hope to advance as a society.

If the system collapses, the higher your standards are the larger will be the fall, prepping is just about pre adaptation.

The fall will be very rude for self-entitled millennials, on the other side Africans will take over the world in term of population growth, as they have the most sustainable way of life !

Best prepping strategy, find yourself a nice self-sustainable tribe in a nice place in africa and enjoy your days with them !

css1971's picture

It's obvious that the fall will be a long slow grind for centuries as people get poorer and poorer. The rule of man superceeding the rule of law. Corrupt gangs/families taking over the reigns of power.

Really we need as a species to get into the habit of setting up Guillotines, and using them.

The question is, where one civilisation falls, do we have another simultaneously growing elsewhere?

roxyNL's picture

The fall will be more prounounced for complex civilizations; today we live in a just in time economy, the majority of grocery stores have fresh food for only two/three days because inventory is money and money should not sleep! In less complex societies they have a more sustainable ecosystem where food is grown and sold locally.

guillotines and instant justice was used because at that time societies didn't have the ressources to lock up people for 20 years !

Wait, why 2032? What happens then?

I think it has to do with his "economic confidence model" it works in waves just like the Austrian business cycle theory. This article was intended for folks who follow his blog I think.

2032, lol, i can't predict today.

Dr. Spin's picture

Yup, 2032 ha ha ha ha ha

2022 maybe iff we are really really lucky.

More like 2018.

I stopped reading when they said Europe went through a "dark age" after the fall of Rome.

After the fall of Rome europe went through a social, agricultural and technological boom bettered only by the industrial revolution - but where the industrial revolution created masses of poverty and exploitation, the fall of Rome resulted in the best work-to-leasure ratio Europe has ever seen.

The truth is that we have been in a dark age ever since the so-called rennaisance, and it's been getting darker all the time. Empires stifle innovation, progress and human liberty. Until empire is destroyed, we're living in a dark age.

JRobby's picture

That was certainly cheery. There is a confidence and sentiment aspect to it. If one thinks it is at an all time low you might want to rethink on it.

With technology where it is, and the number of people and weapons in the world, you can see why the real rulers stay anonymous for the most part.

Reichstag Fire Dept.'s picture

2032 is an election year...assuming that whomever wins this one will last 8 years and hand over to the President that will actually lead the US into the dark ages.

Jason T's picture

that's when the sun sets. It'll be time.

Oldwood's picture

I can't help but think that this fall will be worse than any other because communication and information are so much easier and faster, plus it seems the whole world is in on it and not just a few countries at a time. I feel we have a critical mass going here that may well go nuclear.

" ... where one civilisation falls, do we have another simultaneously growing elsewhere ... "

Unfortunately, yes we do.

It is called fundamental Islam.

Basically only religious fanatics will stand up to an enemy when they expect to get killed or maimed or have tofight forever.

The rest of us will just do nothing but mutter under our breath.

So, which evil do we want.

nickt1y's picture

I don't think the spawn of Africa have what it takes to create or maintain anything above a stone age civilization. Once modern Medicine disapperates Gia will do her thing in a world bereft of antibiotics and sanitation.

rsnoble's picture

Africans wont stand a chance nations are already plundering them. They will be left with nothing but aids and flys.

RagnarRedux's picture

Actually, without the West, the African population will regress to the norm, as they die from starvation, disease and their usual brutal village level in-fighting.

TuPhat's picture

They will blame you for their troubles and kill you.

Really??? Let me recap.

Those who want the gold standard reinstated are wrong, without making a single coherent argument as to why they are wrong, they are just wrong, you know, maybe because the Japanese kept debasing their bronze coins, collapse will come in the aftermath of 2032 (not 2028 or 2036 but precisely 2032) and we need a political system without politicians. I think that's it.

Just point me to the nearest anarchist club so that I can barter a loaf of bread.

The only thing he got right was the Illary is evil.

tarsubil's picture

Having sound money backed by something real makes it impossible to print for bread and circuses. I don't get why he thinks it won't make a difference.

Oldwood's picture

He explains why in that it has been done many times before and always failed. It is GOVERNMENT that is the problem, not money or even economic system. Sure paper money is easier to corrupt, but government corrupts ALL eventually. The dilution of gold has always occurred, just as we see with our own coinage, is a copper penny copper anymore?

Hail Spode's picture

Bingo. Money is too important to be left in the hands of government (or a private cartel backed by the government). The author was trying to show how governments CONSISTENTLY try to default on the implied contract of keeping value in the money they issue. It does not matter if it starts out made of gold or silver, or is paper. They will steal value out of their currency in order to generate more of it.

The reason the gold standard is not the answer is that the government will break their promise to keep the weight and purity of the currency constant, just as governments have done for thousands of years. Government is supposed to be the enforcer of contracts, how can they do that when they are themselves a party to the contract?

The solution is to privitize real money (that is money which has value even if it were not being used as money. Its value is not based on a mere promise). The government's only role would be to enforce contracts on a variety of private mints.

For more on what we should do about money and government see

tarsubil's picture

I'd summarize what you said into: Can't back money by gold because government can't be trusted. Need private money enforced by government.

I don't get it.

TuPhat's picture

I don't think he gets it either. Even with a barter system where you trade a pound of something for a couple pounds of something else, the traders will attempt to use scales that will cheat you and the government will always cheat you.

RaceToTheBottom's picture

But 2032 he has down to the day, but cannot talk about store of value.

Oh 2032, 2032.......

I did, however appreciate the data about how often new currencies were introduced and valued. That was valueable, but more on the interaction with non debasing chinese currency would be very valueable in our times.... It might indicate how the chinese will act on this debasement cycle....

Instead we get gold backed currencies are bad and 2032 boogiemen.

At least trump has no bashfulness in promoting pride in nationalism as opposed to nobamas swan song speech at the UN where he more or less said nationalism is rayciss and letting the worlds dregs migrate as they wish to homogenize the worlds population. I guess since he is a mongrel everyone should be. And by the way, terrorism in the US is the new normal, get used to it, and like it, his new world order.

Oldwood's picture

No, self preservation is racist as is any attempt to resist suicide for the good of the collective, the state, the world.

This is what globalism is, just as collectivism is, the DEMAND that the individual surrender their rights to the collective, the state, the globe, but ALWAYS a larger and amorphous entity that supposedly represents and includes us, yet never does ANYTHING but ask for more and more of us in sacrifice. Liberty, money, individualism are not only unimportant, but the enemy of this entity. It tells us we are all one, yet constantly promotes differentiation between us on every possible keep us at each other's throat while they assume more and more power and control resultant from our growing demands for order to come out of this chaos.

All is sacrifice, none is the reward, lest in our afterlife, given the Utopia we supposedly will leave behind.

Ask not what your country can do for you (like get off our backs) but what we can do (or sacrifice) for our country...a country that is no longer us.

What dark? I saw this today on the side of the highway. If more of these pop up, there will be no more dark.

Don't see anyone calling him out on his "prediction" of 2015.75 collapse or his 180 degree turn on the value of gold (immediately after he was suddenly released from prison). Where is the Shemita? He is controlled opposition in my view. Confusion on the timing is the object. Many quaints in these pages are pushing the "events" out further now. Its a pattern. They have been wrong in the timing but not on the certainty.

Those collapses in the past did indeed take a long time. But today commumnication takes a fraction of the time and I think the events that are coming will arrive sooner then most of us realise because of it. There is an awakening, as there was in the past but it won't take centuries or even decades. People are fed up and the word is out. Events occur on a daily basis and they are known in minutes or hours where in the past it took days, weeks or even months for the information to distribute. We see Hilery drop nearly to her knees in real time now and the coverup is called out minutes later.

No, IMHO things are compressing now and there is a dark cloud coming.

your right, he's wrong, it will be a sudden and fearful fall!

They will throw their silver into the streets, and their gold will seem like something filthy. Their silver and gold will be unable to save them in the day of the LORD's wrath. They will not satisfy their appetites or fill their stomachs, for these were the stumbling blocks that brought about their iniquity.

It will not be a long drawn out disaster as this writer predicts!

For in those days there will be tribulation unmatched from the beginning of God’s creation until now, and never to be seen again. If the Lord had not shortened those days, nobody would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom He has chosen, He has shortened them.

The rich will have no refuge, their silver and gold will not help them, the bread and circuses THAT PLACATE the masses will cease, and America's strength will vanish over night. All will be lost like a thief in the night!

To the degree that she has glorified herself and lived in luxury, inflict on her that much torment and misery. In her heart she says, ‘I sit as queen; I am not a widow and will never see mourning.’ Therefore her plagues will come in one day, death and misery and famine; and she will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.”

There will be no more circuses to satisfy, no bread to fill their stomachs, when the lights go out, when the ATMs shut down, WHEN FIAT FAILS IN ONE HUGE FLASH CRASH!

Triple A's picture

dude he didn't say things would collapse on the exact date of 2015.75... he has said repeatedly that is when trust in government would start to collapse. I think that was pretty accurate because things have really started to fall apart noticeably starting late last year.

Good post. We are now witnessing the controlled demolition. War is next.

A more democratic system is the only reasonable alternative to yet another republic. (Anarchy would invite only chaos and direct subjugation.)

Moe Howard's picture

The more democracy we get the worse the situation becomes. I thought everybody knew that.

Directdem's picture

Since when have we had any real democracy?

Answer: Never.

I thought everybody knew that.

Lies All Lies's picture

Indeedy. An excess of democracy leads (as night follows day) to something FAR worse: Tyranny. Plato plugged it.

Directdem's picture

Nonsense. Either people will make decisions for themselves -- and in a well designed democracy, live by those decisions themselves, alone -- or else we grant to politicians the tyrannical power to make questionable decisions we must all live by.

They will put a bounty on hoarders, probably a % of what the government finds when they kick in the doors. It will be some branch of Homeland Security since they won't want anything going to locals. The best paying job will be ratting out hoarders.

I discussed this scenario with a pig farmer. He plans on bringing friends and family in as a security force. When they come for the food, their intent is to leave you to starve. To steal a phrase, at that point the system will have collapsed and it will be time to shoot the bastards. If their intent is to starve you to death, then there is no reason to wait on them to come and kick your door in, then it will be time to find them wherever they are and kill the lot of them. Three days without water, three weeks without food.
