"Sometimes Party Loyalty Asks Too Much" - Lifelong Establishment Democrat Urges Voters To Support Trump

Tyler Durden's picture

Authored by Andrew Stein, originally posted op-ed via The Wall Street Journal,

I have been steeped in the Democratic Party all my life. My father, Jerry, was a New York City Democratic chairman and power broker, and I grew up in and around the Democratic Party. When I was a young man, former senators and Democratic presidential and vice-presidential nominees Herbert Humphrey and Estes Kefauver stayed at my apartment and we would proudly discuss the great traditions of the Democratic Party.

My father was a pallbearer at St. Patrick’s for Bobby Kennedy’s funeral. When I was young, Robert F. Kennedy and John F. Kennedy were (and remain) my political heroes. Four years ago, former New York Gov. and liberal lion Mario Cuomo spoke at my father’s funeral. I think his son, current Gov. Andrew Cuomo, is a very effective leader.

I was elected five times to the New York state Assembly as a Democrat. In 1977, I beat David Dinkins and Robert Wagner Jr. in the election for borough president of Manhattan, and then was elected twice as City Council president.

With this background it is very hard for me not to support the Democratic nominee for president this year. But I believe my party has become the party of the elites and moneyed class and has deserted its historic mission as the party of the working class and disadvantaged.

Given my level of discomfort with the current leftist orientation of the Democratic Party, I am now supporting Republican nominee Donald Trump for president. I urge my fellow Democrats to vote for Mr. Trump.

I have known him since the early 1970s and have seen his deep concern for people, and how effective he has been while working on behalf of the average citizen.

Donald Trump is no racist. On the contrary, he offers the best hope for rebuilding our inner cities and creating better education and jobs for those trapped in poverty and lacking hope. When a hurricane devastated Puerto Rico in 1984, I asked Mr. Trump to provide a 727 airliner to bring critical supplies to the island. He did so and without publicity. I asked him to rebuild the Wollman Skating Rink in Central Park because the city couldn’t complete it in 10 years. Mr. Trump did it in under six months and under budget.

While he has made some controversial and provocative statements, I strongly believe he will bring needed change and vitality to our nation and shake up our political system, which is in a state of crisis. He is for strong pro-growth policies like reducing the marginal and corporate tax rates and eliminating thousands of job-killing and business-stifling regulations, the biggest of which is ObamaCare.

Mr. Trump is also for rebuilding the military, which has been decimated by Obama’s dangerous cuts and sequestration. He is a strong supporter of Israel and will not abandon our allies in the Mideast and around the world. Unlike Hillary Clinton, he will not allow tens of thousands of immigrants who cannot be vetted properly to come to the U.S.

Hillary Clinton, on the other hand, is the personification of the establishment and status quo. She voted for the war in Iraq and supported the Iran nuclear deal, two of the worst, and most-dangerous, mistakes in American foreign policy during my lifetime.

Everywhere in the world America’s position is far worse now thanks in large measure to her actions as secretary of state. The whole saga of her private unsecure emails and server and the appearance of massive pay-for-play at the Clinton Foundation are also profoundly troubling.

Her domestic record is as bad as her international one. When Mrs. Clinton was elected to the Senate, she promised to create 200,000 new jobs in upstate New York. When she left office in January 2009, the region had a net loss of 8,000 jobs. Now she promises to create 10 million new jobs in the nation. Why should we believe that she will do that, based on her failed record in New York state?

Sometimes a break with your own party is compelled by events. This is not to say it is an easy decision politically or personally. It can be wrenching. In 1973 I was appointed by Gov. Nelson Rockefeller to be chairman of a commission to investigate patient abuse and massive Medicaid fraud in the New York state nursing-home industry—which was extensively covered by the press. The nursing homeowners were protected by the Democratic leadership in the state Assembly. I had to fight those leaders in my own party to get the needed reforms passed.

As President Kennedy once said to his trusted speechwriter and confidante Arthur Schlesinger Jr., “Sometimes party loyalty asks too much.” This is the case in this election. I believe Donald Trump will make a great president and I ask my fellow Democrats to vote for him. The future of the nation may very well depend on it.

This is literally treason against your party and your country! What about Trump's racism, sexism and Islamaphobia? What about his collaboration with Putin? What about his exploitation of the explosion in New York City? His lying about Hillary's health and the discredited emails scandal? How can anyone be considering voting for this bigoted clown?? Wake up, Andrew!!

So will this story be displayed on any news media that Dems read? Maybe. But then its our job to share it like crazy.

Hey, take a break from Illary bla, bla,  This guy wrote a really meaningful message to both Democraps and the real hope that Trump will start a new more ethical path making America great again.

I tell people I hope Trump will be the worst president for the next 20 years.  Get over him not being some saint.  Even with all of his neutral influence he is barely moving the dial away from Clinton and the corruption.  If it takes Trump to do it we should thank and support him and when he steps down, I hope a more sophisticated capable leader can be next.  But why would someone like that now expose themself to the nailgun squad.  Later it will be more inviting for more greatness to follow Trump.  Support what we have and help make the next step even better.

Trump 2016, and Clinton for Prison.

what i don't get is this: "Given my level of discomfort with the current leftist orientation of the Democratic Party"

there is nothing leftist (anti-elite, pro-revolutionary, for the poor and "the rights of man", against the king) about hillary or the democratic party that slipped a mickey to and then coldcocked the arguably leftist candidate bernie sanders.

here's another version of the same idea:  http://www.counterpunch.org/2016/09/22/desiring-trump/

This isn't going to go over well with other Democrats.  To have one of their own thinking for himself is not what the Democrats are all about.  They are about marching in line to the tune of their Supreme Leader.  They should be renamed the Pied Piper Party.

If you have read the Donald's "tax" policy [gifts to the rich] and the "decimated military" industrial complex mentioned above, that apparently needs funding, and our endless devotion to Israel....well, hopium evaporating at warp speed. Oh, he's gonna win... but he needed to stick it to 'em for the People. Maybe it's rhetoric to be elected but I tend to doubt it. I suppose it was bend over or die. It seems obvious they have him under control now. I know, I know... you told me so. I apologize for my brief lapse of reason.  :/

Oldwood's picture

By "rich" I assume you mean "business owners". You know, the ones that provide every fucking product and service you can't wait to consume.....and the SAME people who provide your job. Sure, let's just keep taxing and regulating the crap out of them until they have either quit, automated to eliminate every fucking job they can, moved off shore or simply increased the cost of everything we consume.

That's the ticket,we'll just tax everyone but us....make someone else pay for all the free shit, all of the unemployed, and all of those wonderful government employees and their big fat pensions.

RopeADope's picture

The GOP has for a long time conflated "business owners" that keep money circulating within their communities and multi-nationals and other large companies that extract out of said communities.

A tax plan that benefited the former and penalized the latter would go a long way to legitimizing any GOP tax plan. Unfortunately, the policy think tanks are funded by the big firms so we will never see that.

A plan that cuts taxes to the larger firms is actually not providing a benefit to the smaller firms in the long run. It is a scam that is being run by the GOP against the small business owners.

adanata's picture

No... I am talking about capital gains and more for the big fat cats who sit on their asses and speculate without producing a thing; I am highly in favor of an honest dollar earned. I am well aware the personal income tax and property taxes are graft for the Fed and their closest buddies while impoverishing the people; i.e. Trump's tax program is the same 'trickle down' shit deja vu. We need to abolish both the personal income tax and personal property tax while rolling back the corporate 'bought and paid for' "laws" destroying small businesses. You're off the mark.

GreatUncle's picture

If other Democrats feel the same then the party is split between those wanting to work for the people and those like Obama and Clinton working for the elites. Exactly what has happened to the Labour party in the UK.

How does it come about? Politicians accepting the pay-to-play principle and all the corruption that goes with it.

RopeADope's picture

And by not calling out and identifying the neo-liberal corporate element than has done a hostile takeover of the Democratic Party, Bernie Sanders has pretty much guaranteed the Dems will go the way of the other center left parties over in Europe.

Collapse into irrelevance.

There will be a space reserved for Mr. Stein at the nearest FEMA camp. When shall these fools realize that Dear Leader Hillary shall not be mocked? Betrayal like this will be met with harsh recompense. Once the election is formally announced, Dear Leader shall round up all of her enemies and rip their entrails out with her bare teeth as they watch in horror. May the Eye of Providence grant this divine privilege to Dear Leader Hillary.

Don't blame Obama, No One Beats Al Qaeda:

No One Beats Al Qaeda

The US has tried for years to beat Al Qaeda, but now, after Americans have given up much freedom to central government and borrowed trillions of dollars from central banks, there is more terrorism than ever before. Nevertheless, don’t blame the FBI or the CIA, or Bush or Obama. There is no shame in being beaten by the best.

Al Qaeda must be at least a generation ahead of the US – both strategically and technologically.

In fact, the only weakness of Al Qaeda is that they keep leaving their passports at the crime scene, but consider that their passports are indestructable. America simply doesn’t have the technology yet to make indestructable passports, so clearly, those Al Qaeda scientists in those caves in Afghanistan are at least a generation ahead of the US. Al Qaeda passports are so tough that they were found on the street after the towers collapsed – unscathed. Maybe this doesn’t sound as scary as it should … until one considers that none of the four black boxes were recovered from the towers.  So, America’s most indestructable technology (black boxes) were vaporized under conditions where Al Qaeda passports survived – unscathed. It’s not as if American black boxes are crap either (they have never been completely destroyed before); it’s that Al Qaeda technology is just that good.

What other possible explanation could there be? It’s almost as if …

See what I mean about strategic brilliance? Al Qaeda almost tricked me into considering whether 9/11 could be an inside job, and whether those Al Qaeda scientists in those Afghan caves are not really a generation ahead of the US, but an inside job is clearly impossibe because the CIA is not allowed to operate inside the US.

The evidence for Al Qaeda superiority is overwhelming. Consider that Al Qaeda knocked down three towers with only two planes! No one else could have done that. Two planes hit two towers, and then a third tower (WTC7) collapsed a few hours later. The NIST explained a few years later that it was an ordinary office fire that resulted in what everyone says looks exactly like a controlled demolition, but how is it that only Al Qaeda knew that WTC 7 was the only building in the world that would collapse exactly like a controlled demolition as a result of an ordinary office fire? What’s more, they somehow tricked the owner, Larry Silverstein, and John Kerry too, into claiming years earlier that we brought WTC 7 down as a controlled demolition because it was badly damaged, but how did they trick America’s best into confessing to a conspiracy that never happened? Clearly, they even have some kind of mind control.

I could go on for pages and pages, but there is one hope – Israel. Israel may lag behind Al Qaeda scientists in those Afghan caves, but their strategic brilliance may be as advaned as that of Al Qaeda, so America’s best bet is to give Israel all of our technology, and to borrow trillions more dollars and give them to Israel.

Unfortunately, Al Qaeda has already thought of this, and may have successfully neutralized Israel when it tricked several Mossad agents into setting up cameras ahead of time on 9/11 and dancing with joy when the towers collapsed. Even if Al Qaeda’s preemptive move has made it politically impossible to give everything to Israel, at least Israel is our strongest ally in the region and is thus far more important than before 9/11 …

Needs to form a "New Party" so those who want to get on with being supportive of the ordinary people have someone to vote for.

That would really kick the corrupt Democrats into touch.

Better yet, she does a "Bud Dwyer" in the middle of the debate (though most of her supporters would still vote for her).
