Obama Tells CIA To Prepare For Cyber War With Russia

Tyler Durden's picture

In what is looking more and more like a season finale of the HBO series "House of Cards" with each passing day, the Obama administration is now literally threatening a cyber war with Russia over allegations it was behind the hacking of Clinton's emails.  According to an exclusive NBC report, the Obama administration "is contemplating an unprecedented cyber covert action" (though it's unclear how exactly it's covert if Biden is announcing it to the world via an interview with Chuck Todd)  against Russia, in "retaliation for alleged" interference in the American presidential election, and has asked the CIA to draft plans for a "wide-ranging "clandestine" cyber operation designed to harass and "embarrass" the Kremlin leadership."

So now the Obama administration is overtly leveraging the full power of the United States to intimidate foreign governments, and most likely Julian Assange, in order to maintain control of the Executive Branch of the government.  Does anyone within the mainstream media see any problems with this?  Certainly Chuck Todd and NBC do not.  And notice that even the NBC article refers to "alleged" Russian interference because not a shred of evidence has been presented to prove that senior Russian officials were actually behind the hacking of Hillary's emails...but who needs facts when you have a complicit media eager to advance whatever propaganda is necessary to maintain power?

The Obama administration is contemplating an unprecedented cyber covert action against Russia in retaliation for alleged Russian interference in the American presidential election, U.S. intelligence officials told NBC News.

Current and former officials with direct knowledge of the situation say the CIA has been asked to deliver options to the White House for a wide-ranging "clandestine" cyber operation designed to harass and "embarrass" the Kremlin leadership.

The sources did not elaborate on the exact measures the CIA was considering, but said the agency had already begun opening cyber doors, selecting targets and making other preparations for an operation. Former intelligence officers told NBC News that the agency had gathered reams of documents that could expose unsavory tactics by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Vice President Joe Biden told "Meet the Press" moderator Chuck Todd on Friday that "we're sending a message" to Putin and that "it will be at the time of our choosing, and under the circumstances that will have the greatest impact."

When asked if the American public will know a message was sent, the vice president replied, "Hope not."

Former CIA officers interviewed by NBC said that there is a long history of the White House plotting potential cyber attacks against Russia.  That said, none of them were ultimately carried out because "none of the options were particularly good, nor did we think that any of them would be particularly effective."

Two former CIA officers who worked on Russia told NBC News that there is a long history of the White House asking the CIA to come up with options for covert action against Russia, including cyber options — only to abandon the idea.

A second former officer, who helped run intelligence operations against Russia, said he was asked several times in recent years to work on covert action plans, but "none of the options were particularly good, nor did we think that any of them would be particularly effective," he said.

Putin Obama

Others warned that the White House has always caved on plans to follow through with cyber attacks because anything the U.S. can do against Russia, they can also do in response.  As one of the former CIA officers said, "if you are looking to mess with their networks, we can do that, but then the issue becomes, they can do worse things to us in other places."

"We've always hesitated to use a lot of stuff we've had, but that's a political decision," one former officer said. "If someone has decided, `We've had enough of the Russians,' there is a lot we can do. Step one is to remind them that two can play at this game and we have a lot of stuff. Step two, if you are looking to mess with their networks, we can do that, but then the issue becomes, they can do worse things to us in other places."

Putin is almost beyond embarrassing, he said, and anything the U.S. can do against, for example, Russian bank accounts, the Russian can do in response.

"Do you want to have Barack Obama bouncing checks?" he asked.

Former CIA deputy director Michael Morell expressed skepticism that the U.S. would go so far as to attack Russian networks.

"Physical attacks on networks is not something the U.S. wants to do because we don't want to set a precedent for other countries to do it as well, including against us," he said. "My own view is that our response shouldn't be covert -- it should overt, for everybody to see."

Here is a brieg clip of Biden discussing the "covert" planning with NBC's Chuck Todd.

If the Obama administration is willing to go to such great lengths, literally escalating tensions with another superpower, to protect their candidate from whatever it is that she's hiding then we suspect whatever WikiLeaks has yet to release could be really good.

How devastating would an attack that shuts down Wall Street or locks up banking for a week or two be? I imagine it would be Planet of the Apes in every major city once the EBT system goes down.

Stopped reading at this point. These people are just stupid. Enough said and written.

They are announcing this because it is the false flag they will use.

The .gov will crash it's own cybersystems and other US IT systems.

Sorta like FDR could have ordered US aircraft to be painted as Jap planes and had them attack Pearl Harbor in 1941....

What worries me is that we are watching all this unfold in real time, knowing full well that it can lead to World war III, and yet that is all we do.... sit and watch. We are past the line in the sand already, and they have called our bluff on it. If the legislature wont have them arrested, and the police wont have them arrested, then that means the people have to arrest them, or they will face no punishment and we will be forced to hand our children a wasteland of a planet.... if the children survive that long...

Seriously,

What do you suggest 'we " do? Answer: we're helpless.

That's the point. Electoral politics don't work. The MSM dinosaurs only trade in disinformation and numbskull talk... the oligarch elites are drunk with money and power... I suppose each one of us can stand in the streets at high noon and bang a pot or something...

We're trapped in a nightmare where a few people know the reality and the pending conflagration we face; the mass of people sense there's danger; but there's no person or vehicle of stature that can intervene  in any meaningful way. Individuals , even those of stature who speak out will be crushed ... and no mass party exists to halt the vortex that's dragging the world into an abyss.

Good night to all.

Which is exactly what we are seeing with the carefully-orchestrated attacks on Donald Trump. "Who cares" if the allegations are completely fictitious, as long as they get "The Front Page Treatment" and produce the desired effect, as we can very clearly see.

"They" are going to make damn sure "Their" Candidate (Hitlery) is "your" next President, and nothing at all will stand in their way. If you thought the gerrymandering around Dear Leader's "election" was bad, well, you ain't seen nothing yet!

Each one of these Broadcast networks has something called a "public file" where the public can go in there and make a comment like, gee that cooking show was cool or gee I think your FCC licence should be yanked for lies and treason and terrorist fear you broadcast.

If enough people say WE HATE NBC, then nbc will lose their license -- theoretically.

The Public Spectrum, IN the PUBLIC INTEREST

POTUS allows the FCC to allocate most all of the frequencies to COMMERCIAL INTERESTS who broadcast lies which are not in the public interest, with very very very very little for PUBLIC interest.

I been saying take away the FCC board from the POTUS and make it be chosen instead on the Voter Ballot in our election who is to comprise FCC board to engineer the public spectrum in the public interest.  But really as I step back from the issue and look again it simply appears we have a bad POTUS, instead of engineering for public interest he engineers for Commercial and political interests. This gets back to the enlisted oath.  There are some serious logic flaws now happening.  HOW can you take an oath and fight isis then support it.  SOMEWHERE SOMEONE screwed the pooch, and State secrets of Hillary is just one place this shit hides. When POTUS is an oath breaker --then what?!

shit needs to be written into laws... I'm sayin.

Thos foreign agents too!  damn  it's bad.  I don't want my streets to be FRANCE! I want the bastards letting them in the country in a CELL AT FT LEAVENWORTH.

Trump does not have stature...he has so many skeletons in his closet that he can self-destruct at any time.  Notice the tit for tat theme that is going on...rapidly taking the election to new lows.  It look like they are keeping the race (polls) as close as possible...so when fraud is used to fix the outcome, it will not be questioned.  If it looks like Trump is pulling ahead...he will open is mouth and start another expos'e frenzy by the media.

Posa's picture

FDR and JFK and Ike all had skeletons too... far more egregious skeletons than Trump... all were strong Presidents and leaders whether you liked them or not.

I do agree however that Trump is a clown... everytime he eclipsed Clinton he deliberately started a ridiculous spat with some minor figure that knocked him down in the polls...

The guillotine works like a treat.

But until the military stops defending the aristocrats, and starts defending the people, you are helpless.

It usually takes hunger to motivate the masses, that probably won't happen until after the war.

When asked 'why did you sell our ICBM launch codes to Russia with all our Uranium?'

Hillary answered..'what difference does it make?'

Comey then said..'oh OK that sounds reasonable.  I can find no grounds on which to prosecute Hillay Clinton. Case closed.'

Meanwhile at the Pentagon there is a frantic search for the 6" floppy disks in order to change their ICBM launch codes from '123'  to...'456'

Its QWERTY the same password that Hillary uses for her email , although the Obama administration is hoping nobody notices.

Does any serious person use Windows? Anyway, why would the Russians, who also know the US elections are rigged, bother with hacking any of this charade. Furthermore, if even the Iranians can hack US systems in retaliation for US aggression, imagine a concerted Russian attack. The US would be paralyzed.

But because it is now known to be like swiss cheese for government backdoors I turn the updates off now.

We want to protect your security or is it ...

NSA to Microsoft, we got a new hack tool we need installing on people computers.

Microsoft to NSA, okay give us the patch to embed and we put it on the next update okay.

If you look I bet there is a whole designed update software structure to install hack tools.

Now that is a 100% corruption policy.

fluff. the U.S. gov't can't get the talent needed to defend its own systems. for years people have been breaking into the Pentagon systems and banking systems, for the fun of it. this is true, altho' little mention is made of it in the MSM. i guess maybe they cd attack that guy's system in Alabama who believes the earth is 6,000 years old. I think he's the governor there. If you believe in the technical capabilities of the American government, take a look at the history of the f-35 or the new nightmare, the USS Gerald Ford.

All Russia has to do is pop off a nuke above the US at 80,000 ft and we are kaput.  The EMP would fry every single electronic device.  Then, it's 4th world status for the US.

Moccasin's picture

Seriously, the reality is the Russian government stopped using Microsoft products a few years ago and uses their own version of hardened Linux. Most Americans (including many government IT contractors; just follow the recent State Department email server computer idiocy) are clueless about Linux because it requires foresight and some know-how, thus brain dead Windows is the American default software (most widely used) for both workstation and server. Russia (and every self respecting hacker in the world) also knows that Microsoft operating systems have more holes than swiss cheese (including NSA back-doors) and it is the software used by most American businesses and government. If Snowden can use simple crawler software to scoop up a large amount of "national secrets" and not be noticed until he made the data public, we really don't have much of a chance. Yes, Snowden was an inside job but the point is it is not hard to compromise servers, workstations with malicious code, plug a thumb drive into a government workstation with nasty code and you can own the network. The notion of Overt cyber warfare, where the Obozo syndicate tells the supposed adversary in advance that the US guberment is going to "cyber attack" them is very hilarious, stupid and will absolutely backfire. Lastly, a good defense is a good offense, Russian government already blocks large IP ranges only allowing known addresses bound to known MAC addresses to pass. It is all encrypted data using metered variables that make infiltration, spoofing including man in the middle or man on the side attacks very difficult and easy to spot if you know what to look for. Russia has its own version of Tripwire software. Lastly, if you want to have some fun go NMAP the shit out of our US .mil and the known .ru government networks and compare the results.

kloro2006's picture

NSA did have the sense to switch to Linux about 10 years ago. (https://www.google.com/search?num=50&newwindow=1&site=&source=hp&q=selin...). but guess who's in charge of cyberwarfare: the Pentagon! which apparently is still using mainly Windblows.

GreatUncle's picture

I run both now ... windows is the most vunerable because of all the backdoors they put into it to enable them to hack the sheeple. Seperate machines and never leave both on at the same time = YOU MUST BE HACKED 2X TO BE FULLY HACKED.

Moccasin's picture

Our infrastructure is still mostly MS Windows based and the programmable logic controllers (PLC) used in industry use various tiny Linux (not hardened) operating systems that are managed by MS winblows servers and workstation. The NSA, Army Cyber Command is not likely to be attacked but contained by a denial of service attack. It will be the electric grid that gets hit first. Rolling blackouts will shut down the banking system quickly. With a bit of precision you would knock out the entire grid based on specific critical points within the grid. Simply put, you do not have to attack the entire grid to kill the grid. There are many weak spots in the American grid, we know that and so do our adversaries. The military thinks that cyber war is way to prevent a hot war, I think they are totally wrong, (imho) it is a precursor to an overwhelming kinetic attack.

Nesbiteme's picture

Yes, but Americans have been taught to answer your argument, which contains the trigger word-- for Americans at least-- LINUX!, with the sentence as follows: “LINUX is only virus free because Microsoft is the world's most popular operating system and the BEST and therefore the bad hackers focus on that because no one uses LINUX because it is communistic and stupid.” Of course one thing that USA Americans are not aware of is that the Apple iPhone that has replaced the laptop and desktop computers for USA Americans, that is the iPhone is their primary computing device runs, on a stolen/commercialized version UNIX and that is much closer to LINUX than Windows and the major LINUX updates follow iOS updates pretty closely (which gives one cause to think). So Americans, they use something much closer to LINUX more than they use Windblows but they don't know it.

Are we really going to do this just because the Clintons made a stupid claim that Russia was hacking them to divert attention from their own insiders turning them in?  How long is Obuttard going to keep up this charade?  At some point you stop raising and fucking fold your losing hand.  America doesn't need to be dragged into a war because of a lie over who is selling the Clintons out.  If anyone ever needed proof Obama was amateur hour, this is it.  Stop protecting that worthless criminal and send her ass to jail.  Her ridiculous marionette of a VP has a better chance of beating Trump anyway.

Cyber war with Russia! Now that is some funny shit. USA American companies like at Wells Fargo, Disney, Chase, CitiBank are busy waging economic rent seeking war on USA Americans. To do that they not only rent seek instead of adding value to extract profit but they also outsource many, many, many “high paying” “education intensive” jobs to non USA American workers outside of USA.  Many of these outsourced jobs find their way to workers in Eastern Europe or in the old Soviet Union sphere or now Russian dominated part of the world. And here is your back door access Trojan Horse for cyber war. So that sales tracking interface or your COBAL interest rate calculator or your multi dimension array collection of data in a FORTRAN application legacy systems written in the 1970s still used today but maintained by Eastern European programmers that is your cyber war access point. There is still another important access point Microsoft operating systems and email attachments clicked on by idiot employees who still want that erectile dysfunction pill at a discount or to help the Crown Prince of Nigeria open a bank account in Ohio. For these folks cyber war is only one click away. You don't need the CIA to fix this.
