Universities Ban Politically-Incorrect Halloween Costumes

Tyler Durden's picture

In a latest measure to create a “safe space” for students, a number of universities have issued “costume protocol,” banning such un-PC Halloween costumes as Arab turbans, feathered Indian headdresses, Japanese Geisha outfits, and Caitlyn Jenner costumes.

As Breitbart's Thomas Williams reports, Brock University in Ontario, Canada, for instance, has set up a website laying out its “Halloween Costume Vetting Protocol,” complete with a list of offending costumes and pictures of inappropriate wear.

In a twisted bit of illogic, the university stated, “In order to create an inclusive and diverse environment, some costumes may be denied.” Apparently, inclusive and diverse here means “if your costume is too diverse, you will not be included.”

“If a member of your party is denied entry because of their costume, they will be escorted to a space where they can change or remove the offending item,” according to the protocol. “They will not lose their place in line during this process, and can enter Isaac’s once the costume has been deemed appropriate by team of Isaac’s Bar and Grill Management and Student Justice Centre Staff.”

As one disturbed commenter wrote, “Obey the Thought Police. Welcome to 1984.”

Further south, at the University of Florida, officials have similarly warned students about sporting offensive costumes, once again appealing to “diversity.”

“Some Halloween costumes reinforce stereotypes of particular races, genders, cultures, or religions,” the university noted. “Regardless of intent, these costumes can perpetuate negative stereotypes, causing harm and offense to groups of people.”

In a scathing article in Forbes last spring, the noted historian Paul Johnson called political correctness “one of the most dangerous intellectual afflictions ever to attack mankind.”

PC has “enormous appeal to the semieducated,” Johnson observed, and it “appeals to pseudo-intellectuals everywhere, since it evokes the strong streak of cowardice notable among those wielding academic authority nowadays.”

“Any empty-headed student with a powerful voice can claim someone (never specified) will be ‘hurt’ by a hitherto harmless term, object or activity and be reasonably assured that the dons and professors in charge will show a white feather and do as the student demands,” he said.

“Thus, there isn’t a university campus on either side of the Atlantic that’s not in danger of censorship,” he concluded.

If in spite of all warnings any precious flower happens to be traumatized by a particular costume at the University of Florida, officials have set up an emergency hotline to help soothe anxious spirits.

If you are “troubled by an incident,” the website counseled, “please take advantage of the 7 day a week presence of the U Matter, We Care program,” which includes an email address as well as “a 24/7 counselor in the Counseling and Wellness Center available to speak by phone.”

Not content with coddling the victims of costume abuse, the university is also prepared to punish and reeducate offenders.

The eerily named “Bias Education and Response Team” at the University of Florida is ready to “respond to any reported incidents of bias, to educate those that were involved, and to provide support by connecting those that were impacted to the appropriate services and resources.”

The good news is that there are still plenty of unprotected groups.

At Brock University, the list of “Prohibited Halloween Costumes & Accessories” covers Caitlyn Jenner, Muslims, Geishas, and Native Americans.

Priests, nuns, rabbis, and police officers are still fair game and can be ridiculed at will. Some deep-seated prejudices are just too fun to give up.

So much for free speech and diversity on university campuses.  Today it is the university campus where intolarance and discrimination breed.

I'm gonna dress up as a white middle class male.    This is the most picked-on minority group, and has no protectors.   Nobody will mind if I go over the top with this - indeed they will chime in with extra insults.    Problem solved, give me a candy bar, please.

Being that Halloween is a European holiday, I'd like to file a formal complaint that those who are not of European descent cannot participate in or dictate the celebration thereof, of Halloween, on the grounds of cultural appropriation.  I don't go to Sioux country and tell them how they can and can't smoke peyote.

I am dressing as I dress every year, which is the same as my father dressed for these occassions and my great grandfather dressed in real life....as a Viking!

If any shit resents my dress let the administrator or any other shit head tries to take my Battle Ax and Spear away.

For I AM the Son of Loki!

Would regular ZH contributors please take a moment to help me in my campaign against this idiot and report toro to abuse@zerohedge.com.

You are a serial spammer and a serial pain in the ass. Might I politely suggest that you go fuck yourself? And get a life.

PS. You might have noticed that my attempt to expose you for what you are is always the same. That’s because your Spam is always the same (Using fake links to your BS site which has no connection to your comments; which are deliberately dramatic to mislead people into responding or clicking on the fake link) so it seems only fair that my exposure of your crap should also always be the same. An eye for an eye.

Yes, I live "off the beaten track" in Europe and on All Saints Day, October 31, we go to the cemetary with flowers, candles and things to remember our friends and family who are no longer with us.  I take fishing lures to the grave of a close friend who first took me fishing to the secret spots he knew.  Other prople leave candy for minor children who died from cancer or accidents.  It is difficult to explain why Americans dress up and go to inebriating parties.

Its in fact an Irish or Gaelic festival, and is known as Samhain, its essentially a Celtic equivalent to the Mexican Day of the Dead. The ancients believed it was the night of the crossing over of the dead to the next world, and therefore they would stay indoors allowing them to go on their journey and leaving food outside for them for their journey. If they didn't leave something outside then they risked a dead / undead person knocking on their door looking for food to bring with on their long journey.

I think when Haloween got to America (no doubt with Irish immigrants), this is where the "Trick or Treat" evolved out of. Anyways its been decoupled from its original pagan roots. The entire point of dressing up on Halloween was to dress as something scary, undead and frightening.... I suppose being dressed as the Jenner he/she geezer bloke is a pretty horrifying depiction, so culturally that would be in keeping with the roots of Halloween....

Twee Surgeon's picture

Irish immigrants? Stop connecting the Irish with all things Celtic/ Gaelic, Ireland has minimal connection with Samhain statistically. Gaelic culture continues in Brittany (France S.W. Coast.) N.W. England, Scotland, Wales and Cornwall.

Welsh is a lot like ancient Hebrew (the languages.) Not like, the same ish.

Fuck me if you have a history lesson in you. http://www.keithhunt.com/Welsh.html Get one, you might like it.

BoingBoing's picture

Are you retarded?

I only ask because you sound retarded.

Claiming that an Indo-european language like Celtic is somehow linked to Semitic Hebrew? Claiming the Irish have minimal connection to Celtic/Gaelic culture?

Pants-on-head retarded.

Funn3r's picture

I'm English we also had Samhain you definitely didn't have to be full-on Gaelic. When I was a kid there was the tradition of eating black food, for example a kind of molasses cake called "parkin" and "black peas" which is maple peas cooked into a sludge (tastes better than it sounds).

Samhain was pagan and not liked by the new Christian tptb church which cheerfully perscuted people who did the old traditions. People therefore wrapped essentially the same custom in a more church-friendly wrapper and continued doing them anyway. The British tradition of "Guy Fawkes" on 5 November is supposedly historical but really another variant of disguised Samhain with its idea of bonfires and burning man effigies.

HowdyDoody's picture

"The British tradition of "Guy Fawkes" on 5 November is supposedly historical but really another variant of disguised Samhain with its idea of bonfires and burning man effigies."

Nah, it's about the torture and burning to death of Catholics who were caught in an early false flag op.

[Not a Catholic, Protestant, or any other kind on man-made Sky-God worshipper]

"Stop connecting the Irish with all things Celtic/ Gaelic, Ireland has minimal connection with Samhain statistically"

Have you been smoking something you shouldn't have been?

Well for a start the official language in Ireland is called Gaelic (as per their constitution), even though its not widely spoken as a first lanaguage, it is however the langauage of that country and one can demand any government form be presented in that langauge and that all encounters with agents of the state be conducted in Gaelic including court appearances. I think a minimal proffciency in Gaelic is required for peace officers, oh and not to mention one of the television channels on that island is called TnaG which is short for caineal naisiunta teilifise na Gaelige, roughly translated as Irish language television, notice the word Gaelige in there......

Librarian's picture

The irony of your example is that the Sioux Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota were all johnny-come-running-bear lately's to the whole peyote religious culture.  Of course, peyote doesn't grow anywhere in Sioux tribal territory.  It grows only from South Texas to Mexico and the native tribes in those areas had been cultivating peyote for thousands of years.

I recall probably the first Halloween party in Russia in the 1990s put on just for the Russians.  The host of the original Russian MTV (the guy who brought Beavis and Butthead to Russia) was there as the MC and there was the pumpkin carving contest, and costumes.  Lots and lots of drinking, of course.  After that, all the bars jumped on board.  The Russians love all holidays.  Well, they do love to drink.  Drinking and holidays go together like a Scotsman and whisky.

This whole "cultural appropriation" idea is a complete scam.  I'd love to follow one of these ignorant SJWs around for a day so I can grab the Taco Bell fajitas from their fat entitled fingers and throw it straight into the nearest trash can as I serve them with a dose of their own crazy medicine.
