Did Russia Hack the DNC … Really?

George Washington's picture

Obama, Clinton and the mainstream media all say that Russia hacked the Democratic National Committee and released emails to throw the election to Trump.

But former CIA, State Department, and House Intelligence Committee security expert Fred Fleitz notes:

Only two intelligence entities – the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) – have weighed in on this issue, not 17 intelligence agencies [as Hillary Clinton had claimed]. And what they said was ambiguous about Russian involvement. An unclassified October 7, 2016 joint DNI-DHS statement on this issue said the hacks

“. . . are consistent with the methods and motivations of Russian-directed efforts. These thefts and disclosures are intended to interfere with the US election process. Such activity is not new to Moscow — the Russians have used similar tactics and techniques across Europa and Eurasia, for example, to influence public opinion there. We believe, based on the scope and sensitivity of these efforts, that only Russia’s senior-most officials could have authorized these activities.”

Saying we think the hacks “are consistent with the methods and motivations of Russian-directed efforts” is far short of saying we have evidence that Russia has been responsible for the hacks. Maybe high-level officials would have authorized them if Russian hackers were responsible, but the DNI and DHS statement did NOT say there was evidence Russia was responsible.

Indeed, the NSA executive who created the agency’s mass surveillance program for digital information, who served as the senior technical director within the agency, who managed six thousand NSA employees, the 36-year NSA veteran widely regarded as a “legend” within the agency and the NSA’s best-ever analyst and code-breaker, who mapped out the Soviet command-and-control structure before anyone else knew how, and so predicted Soviet invasions before they happened (“in the 1970s, he decrypted the Soviet Union’s command system, which provided the US and its allies with real-time surveillance of all Soviet troop movements and Russian atomic weapons”) – says that Russia probably would not have used a “known” hacking method to gather and then leak DNC emails to sway the election.

Instead – if it were Russia – they probably would have used a different, covert method, so people couldn’t see their fingerprints (like the U.S. did with the Stuxnet hack).

Moreover, Binney said that he thought the hack may have been conducted by an NSA employee who was upset at Clinton’s careless handling of America’s most sensitive intelligence.

On the other hand, the head of the organization which leaked the emails to the press – Julian Assange of Wikileaks – not only denied that it was the Russians, but has strongly and repeatedly hinted that the hacker was a DNC insider.

Washington’s Blog asked NSA technical director Bill Binney about these two – NSA leaker and DNC leaker – and he explained:

Both are clear possibilities.

Also, there could be other governments, groups or individuals that hacked into HRC [i.e. Hillary Rodham Clinton] or the DNC and had the emails. Now the question is who sent them to Wikileaks? It could be any one of them or as Julian [Assange] somewhat implied that it was an insider in the DNC.

If the idiots in the intelligence community expect us to believe them after all the crap they have told us (like WMD’s in Iraq and “no we don’t collect data on millions or hundreds of millions of Americans”) then they need to give clear proof of what they say. So far, they have failed to prove anything.

Which suggests they don’t have proof and just want to war monger the US public into a second cold war with the Russians.

After all, there’s lots and lots of money in that for the military-industrial-intelligence-governmental complex of incestuous relationships.

We asked Binney:

What if the intelligence community spokespeople say “we can’t reveal the evidence we have that the Russians did it, because that would reveal our sources and methods?”

He responded:

If you recall, a few years ago they pointed to a specific building in China that was where hacks on the US were originating. So, let’s see the same from the Russians. They don’t have it. That’s why they don’t show it. They want to swindle us again and again and again. You can not trust these intelligence agencies period. (And see this.)

The former intelligence analyst, British Ambassador to Uzbekistan, and chancellor of the University of Dundee, Craig Murray, wrote last week:

I left Julian [Assange] after midnight. He is fit, well, sharp and in good spirits. WikiLeaks never reveals or comments upon its sources, but as I published before a fortnight ago, I can tell you with 100% certainty that it is not any Russian state actor or proxy that gave the Democratic National Committee and Podesta material to WikiLeaks. The claim is nonsense. Journalists are also publishing that these were obtained by “hacking” with no evidence that this was the method used to obtain them.

[We’ll update this post with a quote from Murray as soon as we reach him.]

Remember also that the intelligence official – DNI Director Clapper – who pushed the claim that the Russian might be behind the hack guy who started is a documented liar and political hack.

In any event, if Russia did hack the DNC emails, what does it actually mean?   Well, the former head of both the CIA and NSA said:

I have to admit my definition of what the Russians did [in alleging hacking the Democratic National Committee] is, unfortunately, honorable state espionage.

A foreign intelligence service getting the internal emails of a major political party in a major foreign adversary? Game on. That’s what we do.

By the way, I would not want to be in an American court of law and be forced to deny that I never did anything like that as director of the NSA.

In other words, even if Russia was the source of the DNC emails, the U.S. has done the same exact thing.

Russia doesn't need to hack the DNC, Russia just needs to hack Wikileaks.

How else does, Russia Today, lead with a Wikileaks Podesta email dump before Wikileaks announces it?

Redbaron07's picture

Wrong....Wikileaks website had the files to download, before WikiLeaks actually announced it.

Russia Today, were one of the first to download those publical available files and broadcast their findings beating everyone else to it!

Man, the last few years before I retired, the biggest subject in the cyber-security certs we had to get was "insider threat."

I think the Russians have all of Hitlary's stuff, but the people releasing these goodies to Assange are insiders fed up with the corruption. Don't discount disgruntled operatives who got ripped off by another character in the Organization, either.

The Clingon Empire ensures Loyalty by Threat and Coercion. Not by being nice guys.

Insider Threat and Revenge.

The best thing these Idiots have done recently is start to suggest The Rodent has Already Won!
Don't believe it! Go Vote Trump! But that will surely, through arrogance, depress some of her vote.

I posted yesterday about a friend who is 100% Trump, but he keeps wailing, "She will win in a landslide, it's hopeless."
"Are you gonna vote?" I asked him.
"Yeah, It's my Duty, but...."
"Quit acting like a pussy. If she happens to "win" after we have seen the huge numbers roaring for Trump, then we have been Ripped Off and we'll have to ensure she never has any legitimacy."

Way back, in '94, The Press was crowing about how Slick Willie was sooo great as President that the Congress would be 90% Democrat after the midterms. Well, we know what happened. He got shellacked! The Republicans made huge gains, took the senate and house, and Slick Willie had to "Triangulate." Older people remember that term. The "press" portrayed it as an example of Slick's intellectual genius, but in reality, he had to retreat in the face of stiff opposition to get anything passed.

The only Poll that counts is on Election Day, amigos! Vote Trump!!

Again,  who cares who hacked whom?  Its the content which is relevent.

Does Russia hack, spy, survail, snoop, listen and keep an eye on the US any way they can? ... That really is a very stupid question isn't it?

If you had the Ass Wipes Inc funding extremey Musliums and the US spooks training arming and sending them at you and your friends in waves to kill you, you'd be spying on the problem assholes too.

Did Russia hack the DNC?

Of course they did-- and any other system they could access through the undefended Clinton server.

They'd be morons not to.

But they aren't the ONLY people to hack in and it seems rather unlikely that the would want to destroy the prospects of Hillary when she has proven to be exceedingly malleable so long as the check clears. Frankly, if they were truly interested in influencing the US election, they would be firming up bimbo eruptions to hammer Trump and get the person they can definitely buy off placed onto the American throne.

DuneCreature's picture

Who cares who hacked who? ... The NSA hacks everyone, everywhere, all the time. ... They've been all over my networks like a cheap suit since AT LEASE before 1998.

Aren't these hypocritical pieces of shit the ones that keep spewing the line,"Well, if you're not doing anything wrong you have nothing to fear from us constantly rifling through your private stuff."?  .... Yea, right.

My problem with them is; THEY STEAL MY DAMN WORK!!!!! ..CAD dwgs, spec sheets and correspondence and such!

Then Killary sells it all to the Chinese. ... The thieving fucks!

Speaking of stealing shit........

In the brave new crazy world where down is up.

Where ZeroHedge has melded with Dredge and InfoWars to be the only source of important breaking news you can trust.

Where oped has been taken over a rabble of unwashed anonymous commenters.

THINGS ARE GOING TO GET REAL COME THE MORNING OF 11/09/2016

This election is going to be stolen.

But Trump voters need to get out there and vote. If Ass Wipes Inc steal the election for the Killary the SheDevil, make them steal it big.

If they are going to stuff the ballot boxes make them have to use wheelbarrows and forklifts to do so. ....The Trump supporters do have the numbers to pull this off and make the fraud overwhelmingly obvious.

Let them announce the twisted results then hit the streets with a unstoppable tidal wave of outrage and take your country back. ... I believe it will be your very last chance to do so.

I will go with you and help make it stick. .... I don't vote and never have.... I'm just sick of watching the world be run by lies, fraud and deceit. ... Ass Wipes Inc buy up massive influence, all behind the scenes, tell you they don't and then rub their lies in your face like a handful of fresh steaming dogshit.... It's all a scam and it is way past time to make it a lot less scammy.

Worth dying for? .... You tell me. ... I'm game to fix this evil corrupt shit.

I say it is.

The funny thing is that nobody is really denying that the emails are authentic although they hint that they could be altered which, although possible, would require that the originals be produced.

If MSM wasn't so in the Clinton bag, there would be some real discussion taking place.  Instead MSM is content to play the part of Jerry Springer and give face time to any moron ALL-RED drags out.  The aged porn actress (if you can call porn acting) was a hoot.  And it reminds be of a joke.

An old guy is sitting at a bar and a young girl sits next to him.  After a while, he gets up the nerve to say something and asks her if she would have sex with him for $1 million dollars.  She bats her eyes and says "Well of course".  And then the guy says, "Well what about $20?" and the woman turns red with anger and says to the old guy "What kind of woman do you think I am?"  And the old guy responds "Well I think we have already established what kind of woman you are and we are just in price negotations at this time."

Spy agencies are corrupt and corrupting institutions, by definition, whether or not "necessary" agents of government. But it's important to remember they are only agents against spying activities of other governments and their willing or impressed agents.

Calling this "honorable" work is a bit of a stretch. After all, "spycraft" is very much about corrupting people to turn them into adversaries of their own governments. And killing them if necessary.

It isn't much of a leap to realize the same mentality of corruption would develop in organizations which regard their political opponents as enemies to be defeated by whateverany means possible and availabe.

Nice spoof, but a bit lengthy.  Why did you give youself away at the end by posting a contact email using a plaintext .gmail server?

Real hackers/programmers use anonymous mail, and resenders and all mail is encrypted and signed digitally on both ends.  Thus intercepting or hacking such accounts is completely useless even for the NSA since without the secret key its all unreadable.

So, to summarize, you should publish your public key in your comment along  with an anonymous email address which any contact would use to encrypt his plaintext email request to you and digitally sign with his secret key.  In said email he would give you his public key so you could encrypt a reply and then digitally sign with your private key.  Then when I receive the reply I would decrypt using my secret key and if I couldn't do so I would know you're a phony.   But I already know that from your comment.  Did you think you were on the HuffPo?

See how it really works, Mr. so-called hacker?

The US political establishment has ruled that the American people have no right to electronic privacy. The NSA has been given free reign to intercept all electronic communications without warrents or oversight. So now the political leaders that have unleashed the NSA on the world are crying that Russia has violated their rights to privacy. How sad!

The political establishment has only itself to blame for the hacks. If they had engaged in legal and ethical conduct, there would not be any damaging information in the emais. And they have continually opposed all efforts to make electronic communications more secure.

The ability to monitor private communications is an awesome power that could be abused in so many ways. For example, what is to guarantee that the NSA would not use the information it uncovers to blackmail members of the government are unfriendly to the NSA? Or to help 'friends' (stooges) of the NSA? They could (and probably do) control the members of any oversight committe assigned to monitor them.

Well, according to Veterans Today, Wikileaks is fed all its material by Israel:

http://www.veteranstoday.com/2016/10/24/wikileaks-tracked-to-haifa-trump...

The article is worth a read, but frequent visiters to that site will tell you it is painfully apparent that Duff's balls are gripped firmly in a vice operated by the Democrats. It is always important to remember that while an article may raise some interesting points or provide useful information, it is what it does not say on the particlar topic that reveals its true motivations (and the masters of the writers).

jeff montanye's picture

well that article correctly identifies israel as the prime perp on 9-11 but it goes on to say " Trump has promised to support Israel’s move to ethnically cleanse not only the West Bank (a war crime) but to drive all Palestinians, numbering over 1 million, out of Gaza as well."

i googled (yes, i know) it, found nothing.  i have never heard this alleged.  have you anything?

When Hillary said 17 agencies confirmed that it was a Russian hack, I knew that was lie.  But, I was surprised that Trump wasn't ready for it and call her a liar and explain why.  Now all her surrogates are using the 17 agency line.

A major missed opportunity at the 3rd debate.

NEVER in the history of the United States have 17 intelligence agencies (or even 100% of those that existed at the time) agreed on ANYTHING.

The ONLY way a single intelligence agency can agree on ANYTHING is because the agency's official position is determined by senior management diktat. There is ALWAYS dissension in the ranks with regards to the finished product delivered to the customer.

Russian hacking, WMD in Iraq, Pearl Harbor... it NEVER changes, and there is NEVER unanimity of the analysis among the insiders.
