Zero Hedge Targeted On Liberal Professor's List of "Fake News" Sources

Tyler Durden's picture

We have a confession to make, everything we've said over the past ~7 years has been fake.  Well, not really, but that's what the ultra-liberal, Assistant Professor of Communications at Merrimack College, Melissa "Mish" Zimdars, would like for you to believe.

Melissa Zimbars

While it's unclear exactly what prompted Zimdars to publish a list of "fake news" sources, we have a sneaking suspicion it was a coping mechnism cleverly employed by the New England, liberal arts snowflake to deal with the stunning defeat of her chosen Presidential candidate.  Or, perhaps she was simply trying to help the folks at Google and Facebook who have vowed to censor "fake news" sources by cutting off their access to advertising.

But, no matter the reason, below is the full list of information resources that Zimdars, the ultimate arbiter of credibility, has deemed "fake."  Notice that while the list includes numerous conservative news sources like Breitbart, Infowars, Twitchy, The Blaze and Bizpac Review, it excludes the beacon of impartiality known as The Huffington Post.

Moreover, Zimdars even provided the following helpful categorization guidelines to help you determine the level of "fakeness" exhibited by each site.  Zero Hedge has not yet been assigned a category, which we find kind of hurtful.

CATEGORY 1: Below is a list of fake, false, or regularly misleading websites that are shared on Facebook and social media. Some of these websites may rely on “outrage” by using distorted headlines and decontextualized or dubious information in order to generate likes, shares, and profits. These websites are categorized with the number 1 next to them.

CATEGORY 2: Some websites on this list may circulate misleading and/or potentially unreliable information, and they are marked with a 2.

CATEGORY 3: Other websites on this list sometimes use clickbait-y headlines and social media descriptions, and they are marked with a 3.

CATEGORY 4: Other sources on this list are purposefully fake with the intent of satire/comedy, which can offer important critical commentary on politics and society, but have the potential to be shared as actual/literal news. I’m including them here, for now, because 1.) they have the potential to perpetuate misinformation based on different audience (mis)interpretations and 2.) to make sure anyone who reads a story by The Onion, for example, understands its purpose. If you think this is unnecessary, please see Literally Unbelievable.

Fake News

Fake News

Perhaps Zimdars missed this John Podesta email exposing Arianna Huffington blatantly colluding with the Hillary campaign to "echo their message without any perceived conflicts."  Or, maybe this was just dismissed as useless Russian propaganda?

"She is enthusiastic abt the project but asks if she's more useful to us not being on the Board and, instead, using Huffpo to echo our message without any perceived conflicts. She has a point."

HuffPo

In any event, the ever helpful Zimdars also provides the following "tips for analyzing news sources":

Avoid websites that end in “lo” ex: Newslo (above). These sites take pieces of accurate information and then packaging that information with other false or misleading “facts” (sometimes for the purposes of satire or comedy).

Watch out for websites that end in “.com.co” as they are often fake versions of real news sources

Watch out if known/reputable news sites are not also reporting on the story. Sometimes lack of coverage is the result of corporate media bias and other factors, but there should typically be more than one source reporting on a topic or event.

Odd domain names generally equal odd and rarely truthful news.

Lack of author attribution may, but not always, signify that the news story is suspect and requires verification.

Some news organizations are also letting bloggers post under the banner of particular news brands; however, many of these posts do not go through the same editing process (ex: BuzzFeed Community Posts, Kinja blogs, Forbes blogs).

Check the “About Us” tab on websites or look up the website on Snopes or Wikipedia for more information about the source.

Bad web design and use of ALL CAPS can also be a sign that the source you’re looking at should be verified and/or read in conjunction with other sources.

If the story makes you REALLY ANGRY it’s probably a good idea to keep reading about the topic via other sources to make sure the story you read wasn’t purposefully trying to make you angry (with potentially misleading or false information) in order to generate shares and ad revenue.

While we suspect that Zimdars doesn't understand half of what we write and objected to our factual coverage of the WikiLeaks emails along with Hillary's FBI investigation and many other scandals, we welcome her readership to the extent she ever wishes to expand her chosen sources of enlightenment beyond the Rachel Maddow Show.

Finally, we leave it to @MattTturner4L to perfectly summ up the hypocrisy...

It's because they cannot win an argument so they must silence anyone that disagrees, there is nothing liberal about them.

Merrimack is a private school.  It should be removed from the eligible schools for which students may apply for the Federal Direct Loan Program.

If anything, I would guess it is due to the Gatestone Institute propaganda articles that ZH has been helping to publish. If you lie down with dogs, you do get up with fleas.

good for her....now less libtards will ever come to ZeroHedge.  They can't handle Fight Club anyway.

And also as the old adage goes:  "If you're not catching flak, then you're not over the target."

She just gave away her position. ;-)

Assistant Professor of Communications?

That means she's a moron with a fancy job in edjakashun.

If she's so smart in communications, what has she communicated of any importance?

How many of her students are gainfully employed in the field?

Getting paid to clog up highways while screaming and shouting does not count.

Zero Hedge?

It depends who you ask.

Rational Wiki: Zero Hedge is a batshit insane Austrian school finance blog run by two pseudonymous founders who post articles under the name "Tyler Durden," after the character from Fight Club. It has accurately predicted 200 of the last 2 recessions.

Tyler claims to be a "believer in a sweeping conspiracy that casts the alumni of Goldman Sachs as a powerful cabal at the helm of U.S. policy, with the Treasury and the Federal Reserve colluding to preserve the status quo." While this is not an entirely unreasonable statement of the problem, his solution actually mirrors the antagonist in Fight Club: Tyler wants, per Austrian school ideas, to lead a catastrophic market crash in order to destroy banking institutions and bring back "real" free market capitalism.

Allegations of "pump and dump" involvement

The law firm behind the suit describes Zero Hedge as "a portal for people to anonymously distribute derogatory information concerning public companies," giving the impression that Zero Hedge may well have arranged many such pay-to-defame schemes.

http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Zero_Hedge

Wikipedia: Zero Hedge has been characterized in the mainstream media as conspiratorial, anti-establishment and pessimistic, occasionally producing misleading information. Critics have alleged that the site "reliably peddles Russian propaganda". Former Zero Hedge writer Colin Lokey claimed he was pressured to frame issues in a way he felt was "disingenuous," summarizing its political stances as "Russia=good. Obama=idiot. Bashar al-Assad=benevolent leader. John Kerry=dunce. Vladimir Putin=greatest leader in the history of statecraft." Purported Zero Hedge founder Daniel Ivandjiiski countered that Lokey could write “anything and everything he wanted directly without anyone writing over it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero_Hedge

Quora: David Scher: There is clearly no single "Tyler Durden" as the amount of information compiled/digested/disseminated/commented on is far too much for even 2, 3, or 4 individuals. It is likely that the site is a consortium of 10-20+, each with expertise in varying fields and some generalists.

The one thing that has always struck me about ZH is the way all of these writers seem to have the same voice, even though it is unfathomable that it is just a few people writing all the content.

https://www.quora.com/Who-is-Tyler-Durden-of-the-website-ZeroHedge.com

Zero Hedge: On the first person. Zero Hedge comments became a joke, an echo chamber, starting 2013. It needs to go back to 2011 rounds. Most people are commenting without understanding, even less substantiating. If you’re coming to the ring to fight, jesus, prepare yourself for a 12 round fight or don’t bother to show up. Also, as you discover new things, prepare to change your mind.  If you are not gonna learn and change, why bother be here?

Seriously disingenuous of libtard preachers on campus like this dumb fuckwit, but more importantly the MSM, targetting the alt-right media, given a godfather of that medium is the president's closest advisor. Considering they conquered the entire MSM, Zuckerfuck and Google's manipulations using alt-right media as a main outlet for Trump's message (no other fucker would relate it), isn't it about time reality dawned for this collection of shills, because they are proving themselves to be a bit of a one-trick pony, to the point where it is making them look incredibly stupid.

"Ridicule the messenger, kill the message" won't hack it anymore, you dumb fucks. The truth prevailed, and you failed. Your arch enemy in the White House has all the aces, and you are holding a busted flush.

You lost.

Wakey wakey.

Coffee time.

[light bulb moment] One of Trump's greatest achievements could be to melt the snowflake generation, for the sanity of the nation. Might take two terms, though.

And where is this Associate Professor of Communications and Control Freak Studies getting all the time to scan the massive internet for news sites?

Does she do it during class time instead of teaching things like writing, grammar, case studies, maybe Latin?

Or does she get her students to do it for her as a "project?"

Maybe they get credit and a nicer grade, hoping it will translate to a postgraduation job.

It won't but the dingbat Associate Professor of Communications will get paid anyway.

Does she do this at home when she is supposed to be planning lessons and grading exams and researching opportunites for her students?

Merrimack College is just another academic feeding station for tax money.

The faculty has far too much free time on its hands and nothing to show for it.

If these morons do not produce an acceptable level of post graduate employment they don't need tax money.

They can get rid of moron professors and allocate the department funds elsewhere.

Yahoo news didn't make the cut, but Drudge did?

I read recently, probably on a "fake" news sight, that drudge links to Yahoo stories more then any other...

There's fake news at EVERY news outlet, including ZH!  If you don't know that your bound to be tossed about like a ship in a storm with no rudder, as Paul so eloquently said, swayed by every changing wind of doctrine!

I read ZH because it's a free for all.  Sacred cows, except Russia, have no refuge at ZH.  I like it that way, except the Russia part, although I've grown to respect them of late.  What's to hate about an across the board 10% income tax, outlawing feeding kids Gay lifestyle propaganda, countering western aggression...

I learned an important lesson many years ago sitting in Church.  You can't trust anyone!  An old evangelist from Wales named Arthur Burt, speaking about Truth, cautioned us to listen to Preachers with an ear of discernment, like eating watermelon.  He said there are no perfect sources of Truth, that Truth is discerned from within, to spit the seeds out as you go...

Truth has a certain ring in the sole, it reveals itself from within.  All news is laced with duplicity, tainted by propaganda.  If I've learned anything, it's to not be afraid to read things you disagree with, just spit the seeds out as you go.

I find the establishment lamenting "fake" news to be very funny.  But also recognize, burning books is no laughing matter.  I've collected a library of books, yet to be read, in anticipation of the coming ministry of "truth"and their bonfires!

Here's my letter

MS. Zimdars,
Just wanted to compliment you on the article written about you on ZH.  I read ZH all the time, and it really is a bunch of bat shit crazy white guys.  I think it would be a very good idea if some progressive were to take control of the internet and simply put sites like this out of existence.

Sometimes I will read stuff on ZH and then be scared for an hour or more.  I have a safe room next to my office where my computer is, and sometimes after reading ZH, I have to go in and calm down for a while.

Did you see the article where the ambulance had to go on a 45 min longer route to the hospital because of protesters, and the guy died?  He had a 4 year old daughter.  I'm sure it was a white male, so no big deal.  I'm all for the protesters.  And there was another good video too, where one of the protesters just walked out on the freeway and got whacked by a car going by at what looked like 65mph.  Pretty stupid, huh?  Shit like that will give protesters a bad name.

The reason I read ZH is for this kind of information.  I don't think anyone else carried those two stories.  Do you think they made it up?  Another fake news story.  I wouldn't be surprised.

Anyway, keep up the good work.  I never would have known that ZH was fake except for your article about it.  Good to know.

Sitting at Thanksgiving dinner with the extended family a couple years ago I was talking about America stealing the gold of the nations, by promising to hold it safely from marauding armies, then selling and loaning it, over and over and refusing to allow nations to audit it's gold.

My only response was, mostly unapproved sources....

Great idea but let's go one more step.  How about the Zero Hedge political party?  Just think of the phun elections would become.  Imagine the presidential candidate of the ZH party on the ground in Iowa:"So mr. Durden, do you support the elimination of programs to help, poor, hidden undocumented immigrants?  Tyler:  Read Plyler vs. Doe and tell me that decision of the SCOTUS was not pulled out of Warren Burger's Ass!"  Next second, a quick right to the reporter and a uppercut that sends the sap flying across the field.  Yes, count me in!
