Russia Deploys Nuclear Missiles In Retaliation To NATO "Threats"

Tyler Durden's picture

While the detente between Russia and US president-elect Donald Trump could not have come at a more tense time, the Kremlin appears to be accelerating its head-on collision course with NATO, and as a highly placed defense official said on Monday, Moscow will deploy S-400 surface-to-air missiles and nuclear-capable Iskander systems in the exclave of Kaliningrad in retaliation for NATO deployments, confirming previous media reports of Russian intentions to once again blanket central Europe with potential nuclear ICBM coverage.

While Russia has previously said it periodically sends Iskanders to Kaliningrad, until now it has always said these were routine drills. Moscow has not linked the moves explicitly with what it says is a NATO military build-up on Russia's western borders.

However, perhaps sensing that the Kremlin has a supportive voice in the White House, and thus negotiating leverage, Putin has decided to tip his cards diplomatically and alrt the world that Russia will escalate in what it sees a tit-for-tate game theoretical regime.

According to Reuters, after the election of Donald Trump, who has said he wants closer ties with the Kremlin and has questioned the cost of protecting NATO allies, some analysts predict an emboldened Moscow could become more assertive in eastern Europe. With recent military overtures in Syria and now Europe, this appears to be taking place.

Viktor Ozerov, chairman of the defense committee in the Federation Council, Russia's upper house of parliament, said in remarks reported by RIA news agency that Russia was forced to react to the planned U.S. missile shield in eastern Europe.

"As response measures to such threats we will have... to deploy additional forces... This reinforcement includes deployment of S-400 and Iskander systems in Kaliningrad," the Reuters quoted Ozerov as saying.

Additionally, Vladimir Putin also on Momday was quoted talking about how Russia has to respond to what it perceives as a threat from U.S.-led forces in eastern Europe.

"Why are we reacting to NATO expansion so emotionally? We are concerned by NATO's decision making," RIA quoted him as saying in an interview for a documentary that will be broadcast by Russian TV later on Monday.

"What should we do? We have, therefore, to take countermeasures, which means to target with our missile systems the facilities, that, in our opinion, start posing a threat to us," Putin said.

In the mean time, they are dieing to have war with russia. That will go well for Europe.

So 'nuclear capable' becomes 'nuclear' - nice PR job. Let's not mention that integration of the new B61-12 guided nuclear bomb with NATO's F-16s began in 2015. These aircraft regularly patrol Russia's borders. That would spoil the story.

Great, you can nuke Danzig.  Who the fuck would want to do that?  A beautiful old city.

"the Art of the Deal"

..and now Russia has another bargaining chip.

But isn’t that something?

We deployed tactical nukes to deter the Soviet hordes from invading Europe and now Russia is deploying tactical nukes to deter the US/NATO hordes from invading Russia.

They should have done it when we first broke our promise to not expand NATO east.

You see, Germany being the US puppet will do as the US asks.

Now for the Intermarium - The US anchors its interest through it in the corridor leading to Eurasia and creates one big bargain chip with many players involved. The same corridor is targeted by China due to its trade opportunities. The smaller grip of the US the warmer welcome of the Sino friends will be.

Neglect Middle Europe and you will have China taking over trade in one of the last 2(or 3) areas of the World the US is still leading in trade.

Or the largest movement of US military vehicles to Europe since the Cold War. Some 2000 units going into Germany to be spread amongst the Eastern European countries.

Or the basing of 300 marines in Norway for the first time.

Or the ABM site being built in Poland, replicating that in Romania.

It is the Polish site that is the real target of this, just as Putin said it would be. He also said that Russia would destroy it if it were built.

Blankone's picture

Or are those movements more about having the personnel close by if they want to have the ability to take of the "policing" duties of a country.  Could be just as easily aimed at the host country.

Russia moves nuclear capable missiles around WITHIN RUSSIA.  So what?  How is that tit for tat considering that others are moving nucs and non nucs right next to Russia's borders?  Does Russia have nucs in Mexico, Cuba, Canada?

It's all theater anyway.  No one plans to invade Russia in a military fashion.  They plan to break Russia financially just as they did to the Soviet Union not too long ago.  Then the russians will loot and sell off their country just like they did before.  Or that is the plan.

earleflorida's picture

russia under stalin was fully aware of why the ussa backed the nazis wehrmacht financially and helped with state-of-the-art technology in weaponry/fuel[synthetic], synthetic rubber/ military?logistics/ machinery/ areoplanes/ autos, etc., etc., in the early 30's throughout the early 40s!

the ussa had done the same for the bolsheviks in 1919 and up until/ perhaps the late 30s-early 40s.

america played the nazis against the soviets. why, was simple rationale-- morally'bankrupt/ diviated/ diabolical/ hideous and last but not least a faustian 101% bargain for satanist/ presbytarians

their [nwo undetakers] ultimate goal was to let the nazis destroy the soviets. but, then came stalingrad when 'nature`called'? from aug/1942 - feb/43 and the unthinkabe happened, --- ww2 was offically over for the most part and hitlers fascist germany-- except for the ussa clean-up crews not bombing their pre-war factory infrastructure?

you see,... the ussa wanted germany to defeat russia as for being the ultimate breadbasket [autarky] for all of eastern/western europe that would be part of the ussa's grand-plan of a nwo! hitler would be no problem for extermination by the fantastically weaponized us war machine. period!

as i said in the beginning, stalin was fully aware of the post-war treachery wrought upon by the ussa in the name of democracy. thus the ussr was forever labelled the 'evil communist empire'? which were worse? fascist nazis or communist reds?

butt, but,... we didn't stop there. oh no we didn't. if we couldn't have russia's 'autarky', we would have china's autarky!

we backed chiang kai-shek, whom btw was far worse than mao and spent billions to support his miliary financially with unlimited funding and sophisticated weaponry. this was the 'marshall plan 1.0'. unfortunatedly the communist party won the civil war and in 1949 china was whole again under chairman mao.

now getting back to the ussa, still licking their wounds having lost both china [ussa's asian and europe autarky combined-- the nwo's monopoly] and russia, started the 'marshall plan 2.0',... dumping into germany alone ~$18 billion making sure we at least got west germany back for the traitors of america's industrial industry/ banking/wall street/ wall street law firms such a cromwell and sullivan etel. to recoup their well placed money now safely tucked away in brussel's BIS!!!

this is why russia and china were condemned by the exceptionalist  ussa.

Ps. think what the ussa did to iran/persian people regarding betrayal, and one wonders wtf is our problem when we corrupted a democratically elected gov't for a dictatorship much worse than hitler's/ stalin, but on a smaller scale??? think!?!

"They should have done it when we first broke our promise to not expand NATO east."

Correct! Reagan and Gorbachev brokered the deal. Bush (the old) kept it and Bill Clinton blew it to pieces and expanded NATO to the east and put weapons close to the Russian boarder.

W Bush expanded NATO even more and Hussein - as usual - did nothing (a true dindu).

The article infers that the missiles could reach "Europe". As if Poland comprises Europe.

This time we are not buying a "Kaliningrad missile crisis".

XWeatherman's picture

Kaliningrad is not in Russia, proper; it shares  borders with Poland and Lithuania and is across the Baltic sea from sothern Sweden.

XWeatherman's picture

According to Wikipedia, the Iscander-M system can also launch cruise missles with range of 2,000 km (about 1,250 mi). From southern Kiliningrad, these could reach Paris, London, and Rome.

XWeatherman's picture

The Berlin Reichstag is about 468 km from southern Kaliningrad, which is within the reported 500 km range of Iskander-M system.

... meanwhile, as Russia is deploying nuclear missiles in response to NATO, it's clean-up the trash time for the US to cover up Obumboclot's criminal evidence ...

... >>> "Obama Tries to Cover Tracks by Ordering a Mop Up of Jabhat al-Nusra Leaders" ...

... "If you might have the impression that Barack Obama was the first US president that established close ties with various terrorist organizations across the world, you would be bitterly disappointed when you learn the truth. Even though Washington has always been pretty vocal about fighting terrorism, as a matter of fact, it nurtured various terrorist groups across the globe to undermine unwanted governments, seeking destabilization and consequent toppling of those governments that refused to bow to the so-called Western champions of democracy.

That’s exactly how Washington created al-Qaeda back in 1988 to fight Soviet influence in Afghanistan. Similarly, a quarter of a century later, the Obama administration created and armed the so-called Syrian opposition, that was later transformed into a dangerous and pretty disgusting weapon – ISIS.

It should also be noted that out of a number of various groups that form the core of ISIS, Jabhat al-Nusra has always been the most combat-capable one. It would regularly face the Syrian army units on the field of battle in northwest regions of Syria. In turn, Jabhat al-Nusra is formed by 13 different subgroups, that do only share a common command structure among them. But should Washington at some point abandon its support of Jabhat al-Nusra, the fighting capacity of these subgroups would be severely diminished. That’s why the United States refused to abandon its ugly brainchild for years, even when the circumstances would demand otherwise. Back in 2012 the White House was forced into recognizing this group as terrorist organization, but that was pretty much it as far as the War on Terror is concerned.

It’s true that Pentagon has wasted thousands of tons of ordinance***(see below), while pretending that it’s trying to destroy ISIS and its affiliates in Iraq and Syria, but there has been no real struggle as it was officially admitted by the US State Department spokesman Mark Toner.

Moreover, according to the revelations made by a Jabhat al-Nusra militant in his interview for the German journal "Focus", Washington has been directly supplying the group with TOW systems to increase its fighting capacity. (

But when Trump surprised everyone by winning the recent presidential election, the Obama administration has started covering up its criminal activities in the remaining 70 days before the new president is inaugurated. Thus, the group that was engaged in a number of fishy schemes of the neocons over the years has found itself in the “to be cleaned up” list." ...

... "... now the Washington Post would report that President Obama ordered the Pentagon to find and kill the leaders of Jabhat al-Nusra."

... " ... Should there be an inquiry into the activities of the Obama administration after it’s gone, those terrorist leaders would be able to testify against Obama and his affiliates, that’s why they are being murdered in a hurry now." ...

*** ... well, as far as the US taxpayer is concerned, the bottom line is this ...>>>  it looks like the U.S. military action against the Islamic State (IS) which costs American taxpayers well over $600,000.00 per hour would increase dramatically ...(

War Machine's picture

excellent, important post.

benghazi of course was allowed to happen to eliminate Stevens, who knew too much about the Al Qaeda and ISIS franchises being armed with Libyan heavy guns and anti-tank missiles.

it is likely that there is a lot of wet work going on to eliminate some CIA-SAD types playing soldier... but really helping direct Al Qaeda and ISIS.

hard to believe that no one in the US MSM has reported on the considerable evidence of US and Israeli logistical and materiel support to ISIS, ain't it? Almost like US MSM is basically controlled...

because anyone with a plus 100 IQ and an internet connection should be able to put together that the US did not try to destroy isis for months, let them sell oil to turkey and israel, let them have websites, unjammed comms, dozens of new trucks rolling out in the open unmolested, etc.

its not a out democracy, and it is not aboiut helping Qatar build a pipeline through a jihadi-lousy patch of desert so it can compete with Israeli gas...

no, this is about the Oded Yinon /PNAC line of plans.

not the petrodollar, not securing energy : but Israel, which has so obviously bought and paid for the US government (over half of donations to BOTH parties are by Jews, who are 3% st best of the US population).

that level of ownership bought US MENA policy long ago.

and it is the swamp The Donald needs to drain of its many, many snakes and leeches.

PrayingMantis's picture

... I might add to both your fine analyses, @War Machine and @wildbad ...

... "... its good to know that the new security advisor already knows this stuff without having to read focus."

... "... hard to believe that no one in the US MSM has reported on the considerable evidence of US and Israeli logistical and materiel support to ISIS, ain't it? " ...

... which is more like why the US MSM wouldn't venture going into a discussion of this hushed info ... >>> "30 Israeli, Foreign Intelligence Officers Killed in Russia's Caliber Missile Attack in Aleppo" >>> ... where ..."... Several US, Turkish, Saudi, Qatari and British officers were also killed along with the Israeli officers. The foreign officers who were killed in the Aleppo operations room were directing the terrorists' attacks in Aleppo and Idlib. ..."

... Russia had been quiet about this as well claiming it's only a "military drill", however, right after it happened sometime in Sept, (but only reported on Sept 21), Western leaders (via Hollande) were quick to condemn and calling "crimes against humanity" against Russia but wouldn't point a dirty finger as to what really happened to justify their accusations against Russia ... only this tidbit on Oct 10 >>> ... "... France wants Russia on war crimes charges" >>> ... and only this accusation to prove their point >>> "French President Francois Hollande has suggested Russia could face war crimes charges over its bombardment of Syria's second city Aleppo." ... especially when everyone knows about Aleppo (except candidate for POTUS Johnson ;) that all sides had been shelling and destroying Aleppo.

... curiously, Erik Prince, formerly Navy seal and owner of the "Blackwater" covert operations (who used to be the recipent of billion-dollars worth of covert-op contracts from defense and who (after getting his contracts whittled down by Obumboclot to only paltry pettycash million$ contracts) had moved his covert-operations quietly to Dubai ... came out of hiding recently and sounded off trashing Hiliary >>> "Erik Prince: Hillary emails show everything from pay-for-play to pedophilia, NYPD ready to make arrests >>>

... could it be perhaps most of his top operatives were annihilated in that Aleppo attack? ... the 30 Israeli, Foreign Intelligence Officers Killed in Russia's Caliber Missile Attack in Aleppo ... on that "farsnews agency" event? (which the western MSM totally "ignored") ... I'm sure Erik Prince would prefer to be hiding in the shadows due to the nature of his covert ops and directing his covert mercenaries from his Dubai HQs, but this time, he showed his face in the limelight bashing Hiliary ...

... could it be perhaps blaming Hiliary's "hacked servers" by other countries which blew the "intelligence" where those ISIS "directors" were headquartered and directing terrorist operations?  It's not too farfetched to understand why the western MSM wouldn't talk about it ... "plausible deniability" ...

   ...I need a bigger tinfoil hat ...

"Europe Military is Grade A Crap without the British and Muricans"

that's a thing we hear constantly... from London and Washington

because we have to defend from... what, exactly? please state the exact threat

how many divisions, tanks, helicopters etc. are possibly going to be used against the european continental countries?

note that I am not even starting to ask... why

it would only lead me to remember that Russia is the very reliable provider of energy in exchange of all sorts of valuable goods... despite the so-called "embargo"

medium giraffe's picture

The British?  The Army is demoralised, equipped with shitty rifles designed by committee that melt in the desert, the Navy just spent milllions on an aircraft carrier that runs on diesel (although the Royal Fleet Auxillary doesn't have enough equip and manpower to refuel it) that can only launch F35s (bwahahaha!), the RAF have exactly the same fighter planes as the Euros (that's why it's called 'the Eurofighter'), and the UK can't launch its nukes without using a US satellite because it doesn't have any of its own.  Pfft....

Publius Maximus's picture

The whole of Europe is a military joke, really.

Austrian fighter planes (bought from the US, of course) can't take off without American personnel stationed on their military airports giving them the codes to arm the weapons...

Germany now has a small professional army (in comparison to the old, much larger draft-based army) - but nobody wants to enroll.

The German defense minister - a women - initiated a program to make the army more attractive: By getting special hand bags for female(?) army personnel...

A joke you think? Nope. Sadly not.

And it's also no joke that Germany reduced their stock of Leopard II tanks from 2,125 to a mere 350 units within the last 25 years. And yes, like other European countries Germany doesn't have a new tank in development, while the Russian army just introduced their new T-14 "Armata" tank - a fully modernized battle tank concept with automatically reloading cannon, fully digital cockpit and very good protection for the crew...

And don't forget:

Most European armies are fully integrated into NATO structures. Therefore the respective parliaments or government chiefs don't really have control over their troops when the NATO gets involved (WW3 would be such a case).

But this craziness isn't restricted to the military - politics are also very weak in Europe when the USA is involved:

Remember the grounding of the plane of Bolivian president Evo Morales in 2013 in Austria because it was suspected by the Americans that Ed Snowdon was on the plane, fleeing from Moscow? Turned out France, Spain and Italy chickened out and denied access to their airspace so that they don't get involved about a single person.

So much for sovereign decision-making in Europe...

In some sense, yeah, sure... Great fodder for a "circus mill"... On the other hand, I wonder if it is Russia's tactic to discourage some weird and over bold move on the part of NATO before Trump and the uncertainty around him come fully into effect.

I am very critical of US foreign policy towards Russia, and brinksmanship has almost ended the world more than once already. Furthermore, watching old clips and documentaries about the 50's and 60's, it seemed like there was a very palpable fear of nuclear annihilation that was felt from the lowest to the highest. There were still hawks, yes... But I think a lot more people feared, and understood the import of, this outcome than now.

I am terribly concerned American and NATO interests no longer have this visceral fear of annihilation. Some understand this, surely? Anyway... In such an atmosphere, pre-emptively sending signals that attention is being paid to those who do not have that visceral fear might not be a bad idea.
