Wayback Machine Announces Move To Canada Out Of Fear Of Trump Censorship

Tyler Durden's picture

Before November 8th a whole host of celebrities vowed to leave the United States if Trump won the presidency (see "These Are The Celebrities Who Vowed To Leave America If Trump Wins").  As far as we know, George Lopez is the only one to subsequently confirm that he will actually be leaving the country despite numerous offers of free private planes and chefs to Lena Dunham to follow through on her pledge...unfortunately she still hasn't taken the bait.

That said, it looks as though Trump's victory has claimed one other defector: The Wayback Machine.  The webpage archiving site has announced that after waking up on November 9th "to a new administration promising radical change" they have decided to move their operations to Canada.

So this year, we have set a new goal: to create a copy of Internet Archive’s digital collections in another country. We are building the Internet Archive of Canada because, to quote our friends at LOCKSS, “lots of copies keep stuff safe.” This project will cost millions. So this is the one time of the year I will ask you: please make a tax-deductible donation to help make sure the Internet Archive lasts forever.

On November 9th in America, we woke up to a new administration promising radical change. It was a firm reminder that institutions like ours, built for the long-term, need to design for change.

For us, it means keeping our cultural materials safe, private and perpetually accessible. It means preparing for a Web that may face greater restrictions.

It means serving patrons in a world in which government surveillance is not going away; indeed it looks like it will increase.

Of course, the announcement also came with a plea for donations:

You may not know this, but your support for the Internet Archive makes more than 3 million e-books available for free to millions of Open Library patrons around the world.

Your support has fueled the work of journalists who used our Political TV Ad Archive in their fact-checking of candidates’ claims.

It keeps the Wayback Machine going, saving 300 million Web pages each week, so no one will ever be able to change the past just because there is no digital record of it. The Web needs a memory, the ability to look back.

If you find our work has been useful to you, please take a minute to donate whatever you can afford today. Help ensure the Internet Archive lasts forever.  I promise you—It will be money well spent.

But don't worry, we're sure this isn't just another Jill Steinesque fundraising scam to take advantage of disaffected Hillary supporters who will give money to almost anyone who opposes Trump....so go ahead and donate away young snowflakes.

Global Seed Vault, on a Norwegian Island near the North Pole is a good fit for them but the shiftless little fucks would eat the seed and then starve.

nmewn's picture

Wait, do they mean "please make your tax deductible gift" in Canada or the US?

peddling-fiction's picture

Right, to another of the five eyes countries.

Good one.

Wayback Machine has been a useful tool for research when posting on ZH.
I am thankful for their efforts.

AVmaster's picture

I wonder if they realize that their website has a much higher chance of being shutdown and the servers confiscated whilst in canada than in the US?

Pinto Currency's picture

Canada would be one of the worst places to locate an independent server.

Was going to suggest locating their server in Romania like ZH used to do.

Did a quick check and ZH is now hosted by Amazon Technologies:

What I am wondering is what will happen to the South Park episode where Garrison talks about fucking Trump to death and then he becomes president of Canda and orders everybody to suck hiw balls.  Would that be considered a threat to POTUS?  LOLOLOLOL.  Great fing episode.  I knew I should have used Video Download Helper to grab it before the election.  I havent looked but I am sure the Secret Service is scrubbing it from the internwebs as we speak and looking for a pretext to jail the south park guys

Where is missing Clinton Foundation CEO Eric Braverman?

Links connecting Petraeous to Bengazi and also the video identifies that Clinton Foundation info was on server in Bengazi - she let it burn

So moving to Canuckistan which is so free it fined a comedian over C$10,000 for telling an offensive joke is the land of free speech?

That's like  calling North Korea the world center of capitalism.

After 16 years of government spying and surveillance being reported all over the news, they suddenly figured it out on Nov 9?

Creative_Destruct's picture

Really surprised their realization of the completely apparent took that long myself. Thought Peabody & Sherman had more on the ball.

Meh. More histrionics from the left? That isn't new. Fundraising on that hysteria isn't new either.

Have you been to Canada recently? I have gone for a few days, at least, once a year for my enitre life. Everything is expensive in Canada, they have invited in every gimmigrant from every former crown colony imaginable, Canadian healthcare is the equivalent of the VA here in the US and if you think the Globe and Mail or CBC are different from ABC/NBC/CBS or the New York Rag here in the US I suggest that you get out a little more often.

The Bias on this article is asinine

Just because this org might not be friendly to trump doesn't mean its a shit organization. Its extremely useful and having multiple sites is a smart idea or are we ok with the possibility of blanket Govt surveillance and censorship just because we liked trump more than the bitch. The man is a statist regardless of your opinion.

Not saying trump has called for censorship and the left right paradigm is simplistic at best but decentralization is a good thing esp in this orgs case.

Both the left and right try to silence opposing opinions best to have backups.

GeezerGeek's picture

Clearly your definition of "left and right" differs from mine. Big government is on the left. Small government is on the right. I suppose anarchy would be on the extreme right. Now if you want to rephrase with Blue Team and Red Team, I'm with you. When Trump's bandwagon first got rolling, I warned friends that conservatives who supported him for any reason other than NotHillary were going to be disappointed. Time will tell.

People really should donate to the Internet Archive. It's a good cause. Much like wikipedia, they work on donations. They archive all of the random shit that nobody else archives.

Tallest Skil's picture

Fuck Wikipedia; it's leftist propaganda. Fuck the Wayback; they delete things that don't fit the liberal worldview. Archive.is has been honest for now, but you should always use multiple sites.

nailgunner44's picture

Good post and correct on both counts, Wikipedia and Wayback are both Rothschild-compromised operations. When doing research of a sensitive nature, websites should be saved first and foremost on your local machine manually or with a tool like httrack which has a robots script to auto-archive everything. Archive.is (Iceland) is indeed a good site for the the time being and whatever entity owns it, seems dedicated to the cause. Sad to see Wayback is now showing their true colors but not really a surprise given it had been suspected for sometime that they were deep state collaborators. Yeah Wiki is a Zio-trash narrative supporting CIA front- they rub your face in false info on almost every page just to show you they can and to find where their mark's intelligence lie on given subjects. Not that people on ZH don't know all this stuff already, just putting it out there so that the conspirers know that we are watching and we're not happy with their behavior. As the day of the rope draws ever-closer (((they))) must know that we won't soon forget who sided with the liars and obfuscators. We will hang them with the evil-doers with no hesitation.

sun tzu's picture

I might have if they didn't blame it on Trump. This government has been illegally spying on citizens for 16 years and now these assholes start freaking out?

A multi-millionaire American wife sounds like the way out of poverty for moi if I can find one that hates TrumpO and wants to exit the USA with new citizenship in CANADA plus a prenup where I get half the dough. Capitalizing on TrumpO might not be that difficult after all???????????

Where do the multi-millionaire bitches hang out on Internet?

Obviously you've never been through family court eh mon? Maybe gold medalist Miriam Bedard is back in Canada and available? Good Luck!

Eat shit, Wayback group. YOU have been censoring things that didn't fit a leftist agenda yourselves.

Whhhhhut?  Like Canada is far enough from the border to escape . . . any American government whim?

It's not just Trump.  JHC.

Look what happened to the ME, for chrissakes.  At least that took a few bucks more than bus tokens for the Detroit-Windsor (and Port Huron, Sault Ste. Marie, etc.) tunnel.

These guys seem to be going way back to the Vietnamese-American war of the 60's.

Sounds like too much weed smoking to me.

Stormtrooper's picture

Wait, what?  They think that they will be secure by moving to Washington, D.C.s little bitch to the north?  Antartica, maybe.  Canada, not a chance!

Sanity Bear's picture

...what did they do when Obama came in promising radical change?

New_Meat's picture

No, friends, the Ministry of Truth was always located in Canada.

I too woke up on 11/9. Please send me money!

Anyone making hard copies of the Internet before it gets erased or would future generations look back on the period between 1995-201X and refer to it as "the lazy age"?

Hey! hey! If they archive american pron I'll donate. Shiiiiiedt. I'll be bound and gagged scallawaged if I have to survive on canadian pron. No disrespect intended to the memory or to the descendents of scallawags

Internet archive should be in more than two countries.  US, Canada, Switzerland, and Russia would be a good start.  It wouldn't cost much.  Just find a cloud company with servers in these countries and close to unlimited storage.

The-other-Gandalf's picture

If I were in charge of a valuable archive, and concerned about its security, I WOULD NOT telegraph my next moves. Think Canadian servers are secure? Really?

Davilis's picture

This might be worse than Stein's grab for cash, at least she has a cause. Couldn't you be a little more creative than "Canada"?

I don't know if Barry Soetoro is even a real dude but he has my vote for White House press secretary.

He (or it) has scooped more good dirt on the Internet than the Wapo. CNN and NYT put together.

His videos on David Wheeler put the lid on the Sandy Hoax kid shootings clown car shitshow a way even the FBI couldn't cover it up. That's saying something. They could cover-up at plane crash into the stadium at the Super Bowl if the had to.

Barry could be a construct of AI AL (probably is).

If not, I'd like to meet the dude and start a News Media Operation we would probably have to run out of Iceland or Bora Bora to keep the NWO policia off our backs.

We could call our network DC-BS News - News You Can Savor If Not Hang Your Hat On.

Warback has a point. Remember how Trump railed against WikiLeaks and how he was going to shut them down since they were doing terrible things spreading the truth? And how he was going to crack down on people who were helping preserve history.

Yeah, me neither.

Canada, what a joke. Canada is a Judaeo Marxist State only perhaps slightly less censored than North Korea.
