University Stuns World: Pledges To Support Free Speech, "Censorship Is Not The Answer"

Tyler Durden's picture

Did the politically-correct insanity just reach its tipping point? Just weeks after a notably politically-incorrect Donald Trump was swept to victory in the US election,'s Kieran Corcoran reports a university has pledged to end its culture of censorship and no-platforming, and has instead pledged to defend free speech.

Cardiff University in Wales has said it will no longer ban events by controversial speakers, declaring “censorship is not the answer.”

The decision was made by the Cardiff University Students’ Union at their annual conference last week, where they passed a motion called “Challenge, Don’t Censor.”

The move pushes back against the tide of safe space culture which seeks to insulate students from opinions they might find challenging.

Cardiff itself was the scene of one such incident last year, playing host to a virulent campaign to shut down a speech by feminist Germaine Greer over her views on transgender surgery.

Cardiff students passed their free speech motion – the full text of which can be found on page 25 of this document – on Thursday.

The motion committed the union to the observation that “students are capable of challenging intolerable views through rigorous debate; censorship is not the answer.”

It added: “All students should be allowed a voice on campus regardless of age, sex, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, religion, political views and disability within the remits of national and devolved law.”

In pursuit of these principles, it said that “All students, no matter their views, will not be censored in so far as their actions are performed inside the law.

“Events, societies and sports clubs at the SU will not be banned as long as their actions are within the law and subject to the Union’s bylaws.”

Speaking to Heat Street about his decision to propose the motion, Cardiff student James Daly said the “negative perception” of the student body’s approach to free speech after the Greer debacle helped spur him on.

He added that few people opposed the motion at the crucial moment, though some have criticised it on social media since.

The stand against being told what they can hear and think echoes the response of a group of sixth-form students, who were due to hear from Milo Yiannopoulos before his speech was shut down by the UK Government.

In an open letter to censorious authorities, pupils from Simon Langton Grammar School expressed their dismay, saying “we do not need to be protected” from controversial speakers.

The violently negative reaction of the whining, self-absorbed LGBTQQPedophile-K9HorseDonkeyGoatKat-MonkeyBLMWhatever millennial generation to President-elect Donald Trump is a glaring reason to get the Federal government totally out of colleges and universities. Withdraw all Federal funding from colleges and universities. Academia should be 100% free from any and all forms of Federal government funding, including student loans. We don't want the Federal government dictating politics to anyone in academia. Federal funding to colleges and universities is also very Unconstitutional. That should be one of the first policies enacted by President Trump.

The University hasn't done anything positive.  The STUDENT BODY has.

Let's see if the high-dollar Powers That Be even stir.

Wait and see at this point - either the university will realize that they are losing too many qualified students and therefore money (doubtful - plenty of people would be willing debt slaves), or this might mean that the Left is merely trying out some new tactics.

I do hope that I'm wrong and we've really reached the tipping point.

Did the LIBERAL educators finally feel the releif of removing the weight of CENSORSHIP from their shoulders?  I doubt it.  Remain cautious.

Damn!!! No more Safe Spaces (censorship zones)? How will the special snowflakes survive? Somebody might write "Trump" in chalk on the sidewalk. Terrifying...

I think a Welsh University student is more likely to write "Fuck The EU" on the pavement.

53% of the Welsh (that means they're from Wales) voted to leave the EU.

I'm in agreement with anyone who believes that getting fed govt out of education is a positive thing. This is not just from the University perspective but from all levels of education.

Since govt got involved in the funding / loan side of it educational costs have done nothing but increase. Institutions help to 'facilitate' the loan application process and receipt of that money and before students get any of it the institution scrapes off their portion of the funds. It's a guaranteed funding stream and that's what everyone looks for these days, auto makers / lenders / etc.

Businesses today want one thing and that's a guaranteed stream of income and that's why you notice today that 'payments' have become prevalent in every form of sales.

There are so many things today that are monthly payments, you can't just buy it outright, and that's the intent. If there's something that can be paid for that's discouraged and attempts are made to convert it to a stream of payments. Auto loans at 0% are enticing because if you pay on time there's no interest but it's also converting a lump sum purchase into a stream of payments.

There are people out there who specialize at developing businesses that wedge themselves between consumers and the payment mechanism. Think of SS and medicare and even medicaid. If you have a biz that can wedge itself between these two (think oxygen suppliers, med supplies, diaper makers, catheters, back braces, knee braces, scooters etc etc) then you can live high on the hog because you just appeal to the govt for payment on these. People specialize in reading the legislation and advising what businesses will prosper this way.

If we got govt out of education the costs involved would come down and these ivory tower idiots could potentially be out of a job if the U goes under and closes. We know that if there was no fed funding that the U probably couldn't stand on it's own. We need to get rid of the funding mechanism.

Colleges are like any other large commercial enterprise (think GE or Tesla) will have to deal with a leader or leaders that their predecessor paved a very large road around the law and can drive a tank right up into their front yard unimpeded.  I despise what our congress has allowed past presidents to get away with without checking them hard into the glass.

But ths has to happen over in Cardiff. Only UChicago in the US has really stood up for free speech and lack of "safe spaces."

I think something intelligent and ratinal may be about to happen. Loughborough University' Student Union as dissociated itself from the NUS, the National Unions of Students. Maybe we shall finally see the dams breaking.

That university is in Wales, fer crying out loud.  It's not even in the US.

We have to respect their backward culture of non-censorship even though we have achieved a higher level of enlightenment and realize the importance of censoring any viewpoints that utilize logic, emphasize liberty or mention any portions of the Constitution of our own country.

Those poor, poor Welshies.  They have no idea what they're asking for.  Somebody could become confused or worse.... microaggressed.

Does this mean they can write that, "a muslim Somali refugee stole the purse and later killed the 80 yr old woman" or will it continue to say " a young man in a black coat was seen near the body of a robbed 80 yr old pensioner".

don't worry. it is still a crime to suggest that less than 6 million jews were murdered by nazis, and it is the only topic in all of history that it is absolutely forbidden to discuss.

free speech?

free* speech.

and the '*' seems to mostly be about preventing not conspiracy theory and lies, but about keeping certain truths buried.

of more concern: can one still legally boycott Israel?

Illegal in France based on absurdly tortured logic, and illegal for corps in the US, (needs a challenge post-Citizens United actually) because ZOG.

Don't get too excited. Rest assured that only the 'right' type of free speech will be allowed to take place.

J S Bach's picture

They can't afford to allow free thought.  The logic of the Right will inevitably bring all of their Leftist lies crashing down.  This rogue University will be castigated, blackballed and shunned... mark my words.

Handful of Dust's picture

Ok, so there's this Welch Uni and then U of Chicago both endorsed free speech on campus.

The rest of the colleges...."No free speech for you!"

Free Speechers will be banned from flying on Delta fo' life!

Has it occurred to anyone to wonder why the student body would be in a position to dictate university policy?

Inmates, asylum, etc.

GreatUncle's picture

But we stopped listneing to thim ... did a left try to say something just then ... no another moaning snowflake.

Oh okay, and you carry on oblivious to their rants now.

So up pops free speech and now the left think they should be listened to.

+1 also because globally right now the globalists are trying to crush free speech especially if it genenrate objections to their globalist plans.

True Blue's picture

Their own lack of logic will eventually bring the leftist lies crashing down anyway. Look at what they cite as reason behind this -they invited a leftist feminist to give a speech; but this particular leftist feminist committed the unforgivable sin of pointing out that leftist males who had their genitalia surgically removed are not magically transformed into women, but merely exist as a stereotypical parody of females -the gender equivalent of Al Jolsen in blackface; and a mockery of everything 'female'.

Proglodyte heads must have been exploding all over Wales.

Like starving (idiot) cannibals -they will soon devour each other and themselves. All the Right has to do is make some popcorn and settle back to watch. The entire leftist cultural Marxist strategy of dividing everyone into competing tiers of victimology will quickly turn into a vicious little dogfight as each group (naturally) tries to snap up the best scraps for themselves.

". . . is a glaring reason to get the Federal government totally out of colleges and universities. Withdraw all Federal funding . . ."

+1, if only to help eliminate egregious abuses like this one that surfaced yesterday.  Please keep in mind that Montgomery College is a COMMUNITY college offering two-year degrees.

An NBC4 investigative report found that Montgomery College’s president, DeRionne Pollard, has spent about $160,000 on travel, meals and transportation since 2013, despite receiving a $281,000 salary and $3,000 monthly home allowance. Her trips have included airfare for her wife and stays at pricey hotels in Honolulu and Austin as well as at least $3,700 in payments for extra and overweight baggage . . . [more at link]

Incidentally, one of the other percs of El Presidente's job is that she also has an armed driver, leased vehicle, access to car service for her wife, etc. ALL FOR RUNNING A SHITTY LITTLE COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

Just to clarify ... this is the students themselves that have passed this motion. Also known as the "Student's Union" in the UK since "forever". It's not a political thing, more to do with getting cheap beer and discounts at local curry houses.

It is NOT the University that has said this.
