Students Demand "Sanctuary" From Immigration Laws, Student Loan Debt, And Finals

  • Students at George Washington University, site of a recent walkout to demand a "sanctuary campus" to protect illegal immigrant students, say they favor defiance of other federal laws, too.
  • Several students said they would like to make the campus a "sanctuary" from student loan debt, while others favored exemptions from underage drinking laws.
  • Some students even felt they should be given a pass on final exams due to the stress of the election, explaining that "it’s really hard to focus on your studies when there’s so much else going on.”

Students across the country are asking for their schools to be “sanctuary campuses” for undocumented students, meaning university administrators would ignore federal immigration law and refuse to share information about undocumented students with immigration officials.

Several schools have already declared themselves sanctuary campuses, including Portland State University, Reed College, and Columbia University.

To find out more about what motivates students to support the sanctuary campus movement, Campus Reform visited George Washington University, where many students participated in a pro-sanctuary walk-out several weeks ago.

The students interviewed were overwhelmingly in favor of GW becoming a sanctuary campus, calling it a “great thing,” and claiming that undocumented students “have a right to be going to this school” because “it’s really important for students to feel safe while they’re going to school.”

Since the GW students were asking their administration to ignore federal law, Campus Reform asked if they wanted the campus to be a “sanctuary” from other laws, as well.

“What about a sanctuary campus where student loan laws don’t affect you here?” Campus Reform asked.

“Oh, absolutely,” responded one student, while another agreed, saying, “Yes, that’d be cool.”

Students were also on board with making GW a sanctuary campus from underage drinking laws, because students “would feel safer” if they could drink and go to parties without breaking the law.

“I do agree with that one,” declared one student.

“Yeah, I think it [campus] should be a safe space for everybody,” replied another, explaining, “I don’t think anybody should be judged.”

Some students even went so far as to say that campus should be a safe space from final exams, given recent stress from the 2016 election.

“School’s been really stressful especially after the Trump election,” one student vented. “Like, it’s really hard to focus on your studies when there’s so much else going on.”

Throughout the day, Campus Reform spoke with just one student who refused to support the idea of ignoring federal laws on campus.

“I don’t believe in harboring criminals,” the student, who said he voted for Donald Trump, told Campus Reform. “I think, it’s against the law, we have to enforce federal law where it stands.”

By first hand accounts of the 'education' they're getting for their money, I have to agree it should be free.

Think about this.   Americans THEIR AGE stormed Normandy beach and beat the Nazis.   These fuckheads can't study because of the stress of an election in which they avoided tyranny?   It's time to recreate the Normandy invasion with live ammo.

You want sanctuary spaces for not having to pay your student loans?? FINE.  I want a sanctuary space from the IRS so I don't have to pay my taxes.  Thats a compromise I will make with you, Snowflake.

They can share a 6' x 10' safe space with Tyroneesha in the state penitentiary, where they can get up close and personal with all the 'diversity' their puckering little assholes can handle.

Wait until they get out and actually work for a living, and 'donate' half their paycheck to supporting illegals. Then again, I doubt most of these kids are going to be hired by anyone who needs a level headed, common sense employee.

That's why these yutes are crying desperately for Hitlery....they want their 4 years of partee time for "free"...."free" meaning paid for by you and me.

Cut the federal funding and stop subsidizing these schools and their fat cat administrators is part of the answer. It's the teachers who brainwash these kids.

Looks like there is a tough generation of real achievers in the making at universities across the USA. I think almost the entire world is already laughing their assess off about these "students". After all these weeks these morons and crybabies still cannot focus on their exams just because the presidency went to the other guy? And what kind of parents do these snowflakes have? how have they been raised? in a golden cage?

hope they dont tax spit tobacco more ..... can barly afford to chew as is

itstippy's picture

The spit tobacco taxes are outrageous; the regulations are even worse! Everywhere signs: "No spitting on the floor", "Use the spittoons" and "No tobacco spit in the water fountain".  If you send your child off to elementary school with a pouch of Red Man you quickly find the Child Protection Agency meatheads at your door questioning your parenting skills!  Then there's the societal prejudice against spit tobacco users - we're treated like second class citizens and no one defends our rights. I'm sure I lost out on a great job at the University because I was chawing spit tobacco during the interview and they provided no place to spit (I had to use my boot because I wasn't allowed to spit on their damned floor).

A man (or a woman) shouldn't need a "safe space" to enjoy a simple chaw of Mail Pouch.

I actually feel bad for the nation's HR people who have to sift through this pond scum for a decent new hire.

This pond scum will BE the nation's HR people.  They're all getting Social Sciences degrees.  The nation's working people will have to kowtow to these idiots in order to get hired.

Agreed. Collapse the education system. Start with the dept. of lower education. Stop the subsidies and allow the colleges to go bust which puts the Karl Marx fan club professors out of a job.

"JFC - What's going to happen when these folks become parents?"

they will be hopelessly overburdened. I guess, they will demand sanctuary areas where their kids are not allowed in. And of course everywhere plenty of nice little puppies and counsellors for stress therapy.

I have been in more combat than most alive. I have to disagree that it is a demonstration of character. The good ones die with the bad ones. Choices come down to what takes the least energy for your brain to perform. Running away and getting courts martialed is a certainty that takes a lot of energy to overcome.

Still, your point is valid. Everything in the human experience is relative. Mostly relative to our own experience. But growth is not possible without interacting with other people. And rewarding growth happens when those interactions are challenging.

I always thought the university library was a safe space ? nice and quiet lots of books to study... perhaps they should try that ?

Generation Snowflake.....holy shit; in less than 100 years, we've gone from "kids lying about their age, so they could go fight in a war", to "that big meanie said things, and now I'm offended".

These pansies (the masculinity-challenged) need a good beating, just once.

These idiots are a small proportion of this generation. Most are conservative realists working really hard. They have to, because their choice is sanity or being a snowflake.

All generations have bad eggs. These snowflakes get way more press than is proportional to their numbers. That is the (((NWO))) agenda. Propaganda baby.

konadog's picture

Me neither, but working until I'm dead to support these twits isn't exactly nirvana either. We'll both be taxed into each supporting 50 of these idiots. If they want their little school to be free from Federal law, then it can also be free from Federal funding. Let's see how the snowflakes like that.

Citxmech's picture

"undocumented students 'have a right to be going to this school' because 'it’s really important for students to feel safe while they’re going to school.'"

This doesn't even make linguistic or logical sense.

If you think this year is stressful, you should have been on campus as a student in 1968.

Sweet Cheeks's picture

I was on campus in the south in 1968. Biggest complaint was that no one showed up at the free speech rally to protest the war. I had English class with Pittsburgh Steelers',
Terry Bradshaw, and Duck Dynasty's, Phil Robertson. Most went home weekends to hunt and fish, but getting a degree and getting out of there was on most of our minds.

Tuition started out at $35.00 a semester until the Federal government started financing student loans. If you worked summers and had a little help from parents, you could leave school without a student loan. Life was good.

Today, academia, which costs a fortune is all about white guilt, feminism, SJW, and global warming, instead of getting a foundation for acquiring a job. No wonder employers shy away from those damn sensitive Snowflakes.

The boomer "hippie" free love anti-establishment generation grew up to be materialistic assholes who sold out their grandchildren to the bankers, rejecting everything they said they believed in.  Maybe in 20 or 30 years the snowflakes will be preaching the value of gold and hard work when they find themselves homeless because their parents' homes (where they live) have been foreclosed upon.  Who knows.
