Coup Or No Coup: What To Watch For As The Electoral College Votes On Monday

Tyler Durden's picture

With even Harvard's Larry Lessig admitting that his efforts to flip the Electoral College against Trump have failed miserably (see "Harvard Professor Admits His Efforts To Turn Electoral College Against Trump Have Failed Miserably"), it's a near certainty that Trump will, in fact, be elected President when the Electoral College casts their votes tomorrow.

That said, there could always be surprises and, as such, The Hill has published a list of five things you should keep an eye on as electors get set to cast their ballots.  First, here is how the 538 electors should cast their ballots if they all strictly follow the will of the voters in their respective states.

EC 1

That said, we know that at least one Texas elector, Chris Suprun,  has vowed to go rogue tomorrow and anxious eyes will be waiting to see if anyone decides to join him.  As The Hill points out, there hasn't been an election since 1836 in which more than 1 elector changed his vote, so even 2 defectors would make history.

There’s no evidence of a widespread number of Republican defections—just one Republican elector from Texas has gone public with plans to break from Trump.

But there hasn’t been an election in which more than one elector jumped ship for reasons other than the death of a candidate since 1836, according to the nonprofit FairVote. So a defection by even one more Republican elector would make history.

The next thing to watch is whether any Democrat electors will cast protest votes.  A small group of Democratic electors had vowed to join Larry Lessig's coup attempt by throwing their support behind an alternative Republican candidate.  While this now seems like a remote possibility, it is something to watch for.

Democratic electors are the ones beating the drums for the revolt, yet they’re largely powerless to change the outcome.

A handful of electors are already planning on uniting around a Republican alternative as a protest, but it’s still unclear how many are willing to join the protest.

In theory, a unified front of the 232 Democrats could join with 38 Republicans to elect an alternative president. But in practice, the anti-Trump electors will be lucky if more than a dozen Democrats break.

Electoral College Map

With 29 states and the District of Columbia binding their electors by law, it will also be interesting to see if anyone in those states choose to defect, and if so, what penalties will be levied upon them.

The country’s presidential electors are chosen through different methods across the country—some are elected directly while others are picked by the candidates themselves or by the state party.

Bucking their jurisdiction’s votes could also have consequences for faithless electors. 29 states and the District of Columbia bind their electors by law, mostly with small fines as retribution for going rogue. No faithless electors have ever been punished, so political junkies will be watching to see if that changes.

Finally, when all the voting is said and done, all eyes will be watching how the candidates and their respective parties react.  Will Trump launch a massive tweet storm blasting "faithless electors" and/or will Democrats finally tone down the "Russian hacking" rhetoric and calls to scrap the Electoral College system?  Somehow we suspect that finally admitting they ran a failed candidate that was doomed to lose from the start is not a viable alternative for the talking heads of the leftist we're somewhat less than hopeful.

Trump is President tomorrow when Hawaii finishes voting at 1pm local time.

For the next 4 yrs I am not listening or reading any liberal BS.

Grumbleduke's picture

Nothing will happen today, simply because the votecount of the electoral college will be published on 01-06-2017. Until then nobody in public will know how the vote went.

So, there's a little more time to sharpen the sticks and cleaning the guns.

Who G’sAF…

Just get it over with.

There is a great meme out there somewhere and I cannot seem to find it now…

..Trump and Obama meeting in the Oval Office…

Trump to Obama: “Whatever, just take your shit and get out.”

Manthong's picture

I am so bummed…

We used to have Chelsea, the Bush Girls, Malia and Sasha as first daughters to appreciate and admire. But now all we get is   THIS.  .

I have looked up the name Suprun, apparently it comes from the French/Iroquois word meaning Soup Run, (A person that runs to get Soup.)

Apparently the French fur trappers and their Iroquois associates always had a Supruneur in camp to get soup for the men, The Suprun were often captive effeminates who were often whipped or shot for spilling the Beaver soup that was highly valued for sustenance amongst the trapper communities.

It is a Native American name a lot like Dances with Wolves but without the Wolves and the Dancing. You can get Soup in the mail now so...Democrat.

Manthong's picture

Oh good.

I thought that his name was Sputum.

I don't think so, why? Because that creep Podesta said we will know when Hawaii closes.

He's been through this before, so I assume he does know.

Chris Suprun is trolling Trump on Twittter now. Remember this guy is represented by a PR firm owned by Van Jones the mega activist who created and ran Occupy and most likely Black Lives Matter. They are trolling for a response from Trump.

Grumbleduke's picture

Then maybe we will see civil war, 21. century style where fractions of the deep state fight it out amongst each other? I know, i know - but it's christmas and wish-list time.

Can you imagine a character like Trump take it indefinitely from the ex-occupant? I don't, unless he's in on the game. We'll see. The only thing I'm interested right now - i'm german - is no war with Russia. That's numero uno! The rest will sort itself out, you guys and gals still have heart and spirit - and guns and weed!

Manthong's picture

Words fail to describe the order of magnitude of POS that Van Jones is.

Don’t be surprised if one day finds him slit open like a mackerel in the back of a commie meeting house and gay bar.

I think if something dramatic happens it will certainly leak out.

Trump would know for sure.

There is no reason on god's green earth these results shouldn't be available tonight.  Even the votes of 62 million can be tallied quicker than this.

we seem to be depending a great deal on the honor of honorable people (maybe) in what are clearly dishonorable times.  the electoral college is in the constitution and it's not going away as the little states will not give up their advantage.

however it might be possible to change the distribution of electors within a state to proportional rather than winner take all.  that way the results like 2000 and this year are less likely.  as kellyanne conway might possibly have said, i could win it that way or straight popular vote too, just don't change the rules afterward.

another thing that seems to need some tightening is the faithless elector loophole, especially if more than that texan jump ship.

Nylsaar's picture

So, what is wrong with this year's results?  With the electoral college win of +100 votes, the popular vote should, and would, have been a landslide if not for massive voter fraud in all the blue state counties we cannot audit.  This is the 2nd time since 1980 that American's voices were heard.

SilverRhino's picture

By all means do that and watch the delegrations from California, Oregon, Washington, New York and other liberal stronghold states fracture like glass under a sledgehammer.

sarz's picture

How about no electors voting in the first round, just votes cast automatically?

Pickleton's picture

"within a state to proportional rather than winner take all."

Although I think there are a handful that do this, libtard state will NEVER do this, because it ends with more votes for the right, not the left.

Despite what you might think, HALF of cali is conservative....

Does the fact that this is an election year have anything to do with the timing?

CK: It wasn’t a timing thing, it wasn’t something that was planned. But I think the two presidential candidates that we currently have also represent the issues that we have in this country right now.

Can you expound on that?

CK: You have Hillary [Clinton], who has called black teens or black kids super predators. You have Donald Trump, who is openly racist. We have a presidential candidate (Clinton) who has deleted emails and done things illegally and is a presidential candidate. That doesn’t make sense to me. If that was any other person, you’d be in prison. So what is this country really standing for? (emphasis mine)

No. He's a fake ass liar that lied about his 9/11 involvement. He has a fake payday loan scam and was banging chicks on the side when he declared bankruptcy as his wife worked full time to support his dumb ass and their poor children. He is the epitome of a loser and should be barred from being an elector. His vote negates 600k. Think about that. Dude should have the living shit beaten outta him.

In a heavily-publicized editorial this month for the New York Times, Suprun stated that as a member of the Electoral College he will not cast his ballot for Trump because the president-elect “shows daily he is not qualified for the office.”
Suprun, a Dallas resident for more than a decade, even used his résumé to establish credibility in the Times piece, writing in the second paragraph: "Fifteen years ago, as a firefighter, I was part of the response to the Sept. 11 attacks against our nation."
He has founded a nonprofit called Never Forget and state records show he is a licensed paramedic -- but much of the rest of résumé, publicly available on LinkedIn, is questionable.
In addition, on at least two occasions over the last couple years at crowded Major League Baseball games, Suprun has been introduced as a 9/11 veteran before throwing out first pitches.
"He claimed to be a first responder with the Manassas Park [Virginia] Fire Department on September 11, 2001 and personally told us stories 'I was fighting fire that day at the Pentagon,’" said a first responder who knows Suprun and only agreed to speak about him if his identity was concealed.
"No, I was on a medic unit that day at the Pentagon and you make a phone call to Manassas Park and you find out that he wasn't even employed there until October 2001."
The City of Manassas Park confirmed to WFAA that it hired Suprun on October 10, 2001, one month after the 9/11 attacks.
The fire chief there added that his department never even responded to the Pentagon or any of the 9/11 sites.
"It's no different than stolen valor for the military; dressing up and saying 'Hey, I earned a Purple Heart' when you weren't even in combat.' There's a big difference between shopping at Old Navy and being a Navy SEAL," said the first responder who knows Suprun.
But Suprun's résumé raises even more questions.
It shows he was, at the time this story aired on WFAA, a paramedic with Air Methods air ambulance service. But Christina Brodsly, a spokeswoman for that company, said he is not an employee there.
Suprun also claims to currently be a paramedic with Freedom EMS in Dallas. But records from the Texas Department of State Health Services indicate there's no such company. A firm with that name used to exist in Houston, but it went out of business in 2008, according to DSHS.
Turns out, federal court records show Suprun has spent the last five years in bankruptcy while his résumé says he was working. He even collected unemployment during part of it, court records show. Suprun was just released from bankruptcy supervision this month.
He never responded to multiple emails from WFAA and calls to his telephone go to a recording which says his voicemail is full.

That's expensive. Stop spending money we don't have.

Sieze their assets, strip their citizenship, put them on OZero's no-fly/noboat lists, then exile them by boating them 100 miles offshore and pushing them overboard.

MMM no.  You do to them what those cock suckers have done to everyone else.

You seize their assets and toss them into the can, and THEN you hold the tribunals with a public defender whose specialty is some bullshit like patent law - again, like those cocksuckers keep doing to everyone else.  Eeasy peasy, hang em immediately.

Why so many down votes? Jim Stone is spot on here.

Trump has to be very careful, his election is a coup in itself.

None of the (((elites))) want Trump Presidency. He is putting military in because the CIA control of the White House is being terminated. He needs the business people to achieve his goals. The left is going to organize (better than us) to attack Trump, starting with "the election was stolen" They write the memes but they own the dying media which is why Hillary said she would go after the alt. media. The most important person is the one they went after with a vengeance, Steve Bannon because he is savvy and bold. He is Trumps bodyguard inside. I don't trust Peter Thiel, he comes out of the paypal mafia and he may be a plant. During the Tech meeting he was giving weird sideways looks in that room, and who was he looking at? They need people inside to control. Biggest fear for them is Trump stops the robots and breaks up their monopolies with antitrust.
