Trump Doubles Down On Nukes: "Let It Be An Arms Race, We'll Outlast Them All"

Tyler Durden's picture

Earlier this morning, president-elect Trump appeared on MSNBC's Morning Joe to discuss the following tweet he sent out yesterday calling for an expanded nuclear arsenal.

When asked by co-host Mika Brzezinski to clarify the tweet, Trump gave a response that she, nor anyone else for that matter, was expecting.

“Let it be an arms race, we will outmatch them at every pass … and outlast them all.”

Meanwhile, Trump's newly appointed Press Secretary, Sean Spicer, appeared on the Today Show to calm the nerves of an anxious Matt Lauer who asked whether Trump was planning to "reverse 40 years of policy in this country."

“[T]here’s not going to be [an arms race] because he is going to ensure that other countries get the message he is not going to sit back and allow that.”

“What’s going to happen is they will all come to their senses and we will all be just fine.”

“Other countries need to be put on notice that he is not going to sit back and allow them to undermine our safety, our sovereignty.  He is going to match other countries and take action.”

As we noted yesterday, Trump's calls to strengthen the U.S. nuclear arsenal comes just as Vladimir Putin has urged for Russia to do the same.  Here is what we said yesterday:

In a curious convergence of superpower opinions, earlier on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin called for the country to reinforce its military nuclear potential. In a speech that recapped military activities in 2016, Putin said the army's preparedness has "considerably increased" and called for continued improvement that would ensure it can "neutralise any military threat".

"We need to strengthen the military potential of strategic nuclear forces, especially with missile complexes that can reliably penetrate any existing and prospective missile defence systems," the Russian president said.

He added that Russia "must carefully monitor any changes in the balance of power and in the political-military situation in the world, especially along Russian borders, and quickly adapt plans for neutralising threats to our country."

With that, we have a sneaking suspicion that "Rocky 24: Balboa vs. Drago - The Rematch" was just approved for production.

What Trump doesn't get is warmongering and economic progress don't mix.

Geez, I wonder what part of the economy is the MIC (thats Military Industrial Complex).... Answer a big portion of it.

Neighborhoods with nukes......makes for nice neighbors.

Be nice to that little old lady Joey.......she could wipe us off the face of this earth.

Lol at people worried. It's already an arms race, every superpower has to constantly update and improve its nuclear arsenal. He's just setting himself up so the media can frame him as an over-aggressive war mongering bully. Then in 3 months when he stops supporting US efforts in Syria the MSM media will have been snookered because they can't frame him as weak and not defending U.S. interests, because they've just spent 3 months defining him as over-aggressive in defense of US interests. (It's what even a Libertarian president would do, maintain a don't ever f*ck with me defense, he's just said it in a hyperbolic way to play the media did the same with immigration and several other issues.)

HockeyFool's picture

Finally someone gets it. Trump is playing the media again. Just watch how they panic in the next few days over this.

The old canard that war spurs the economy on is a load of crap. When was the last time you went to the mall to purchase a nuclear weapon? Only a few get rich.

HopefulCynical's picture

He's just following in the footsteps of another president, who understood how to get other countries to take us seriously after we'd had a weakling for a president.

MillionDollarBonus_'s picture

We don't need an "arms race" Trump - we need to #NukeRussiaNow! This is just a lame excuse to delay an actual confrontation with his master Putin!

Billy the Poet's picture

A nuclear arsenal that can destroy the world a dozen times over isn't enough?

Kotzbomber747's picture

So how is Dufus Donald doing to finance this new arms race? The last time we had an arms race, the US was still more or less a creditor nation. Oh wait, I know! DEBT! Donald is the self-proclaimed "King of Debt."

Judging by the first couple of comments, it seems it is slowly dawning on some ZH-ers that The Donald might be a little bit wacko.

I hate Hillary, and I hate to say told ya so, but: TOLD YA SO!

Looks like the MSM picked a bad time to stop sniffin glue.

This is what happens when you don't have a pussy in charge that doesn't have a clue about negotiating anything with anyone-  I'm digging the new look.......

Since the only way the Globalists were going to start WWIII was to weaken us (we got rid of our MIRVs, have some stupid launch on impact order in place, have most of the subamrine fleet in base most of the time, developed an ineffective missle defence system, made a resource hog F-35 that sucks etc.) and get Russia/China to think they could win a war with us.  This is actually really good news.  The stronger we are, the less chance for WWIII, which would really suck.

Oldwood's picture

The only way they will win is if we SURRENDER. It is no accident that they continually create the environment to motivate extremist responses. Our western culture has been indoctrinated to simultaneously FEAR everything, see it as our right and responsibility to interfere with every other nation, propagate wars that result in untold death and horror and then recoil in disgust and GUILT over what we have done. They then use this guilt to encourage us to surrender to those we were initially motivated to fear. Nations such as America CANNOT be defeated in any other way other than for us to simply give up, to submit in guilt and fear.

Trump says NO.

albanian's picture

You americans are stupid aff you think you can win a nuclear war!,Aff that happens there are no winners, besides the money changers!!

SMG's picture

Nobody wants a nuclear war, but the US nuclear arsenal was becoming dangerously inadequite, so much so that any potential enimies might consider a first strike winnable, ie greater chance of war.  Now if Trump follows through on this the chance of a nuclear war decreases because of deterence.

Max Steel's picture

Obama already promised 1 Trillion $ to overhaul the nuclear arsenal in next 30 years. But if you follow closely they are not making any new icbm's , just replacing the older rockets because they break down and need repairs in every 3 years. Rest warhead bus will remain same unlike Russia. Rest will go on new bomber and B-61 bombs.

Oldwood's picture

Peace is an illusion. Every living thing is at war with each other for dominance if not outright survival. The notion that our arms race was somehow suspended is a farce. Nukes were largely fully developed from a nuclear science perspective and those powers who had it simply wanted to prevent all others from having it. As we see today, that is not a sustainable situation, and was always simply a delaying action. The arms race never stopped, it simply migrated to other technology based platforms. Russia has told us that they have ramped up their weapons system in response to NATO placing high tech systems on their borders. Putin told us that they cannot compete on a tech level as they lack the money, so they have instead worked on simply creating a larger arsenal. We spend 35 billion on one fighter and they build ten for the same price. Not as advanced, but it wouldn't be the first time that pure numbers overwhelmed a more technically advanced force. Look around the world at existing conflicts and explain how stone age fuckers are standing up pretty damned strong.

There are lots of factors in effective military, but I believe a significant one is WILL, and that is something that regardless of how much we spend on a fighter, America is losing ground. We need a strong whiff of nationalism to get our spiine up. We just don't want it to go too far.

We should insist on superiority in our defense system while ALSO insisting that we maintain an non-interventionist policy. The only thing important is for ANYONE to know that they will regret they day they EVER attack us.

And we cannot live under the weight of GUILT for past actions. Yes, we need to recogonize our failures and commit to never repeat them, but we should NEVER retreat, surrender or submit because of them.

Yeah, I went to war with a mouse this morning. It was epic.

Hopefully no one was hurt....

I hope you are correct.  Since we have not scene Trump in action yet (after taking office), it is still difficult to always know what is posturing and what is an actual policy direction.  He seems to be playing the old mafia game of 'keep your friends close, and your enemies even closer.'  We will not know until perhaps a year into his Presidency whether Trump is a closet neocon or a pragmatist that sees the necessity of a sane foreign policy.

SomethingSomethingDarkSide's picture

The arms race killed The Soviets, it will kill China next.  Why?  Real armageddon is bad for your health, no matter who you are, so you'd better have a robust economy that can adjust for nuclear proliferation spending.  Commies are just spinning tops.

baldknobber's picture

Problem is our economy is not much better than the old Soviets was. There is such a thing as out smarting yourself.

Indeed, there's no fixing the US economy without knocking a zero off the War Machine budget.  Any attempts to do otherwise are sheer fantasy and destined to fail.

This is something the Chinese actually understand.  They've been running a nation for 5000 years; they've seen this before.

Sun Tzu warned about the military industrial complex 2500 years ago. He warned that a king must avoid war, as once it begins, the merchants who sell swords and shields will have a vested interest in keeping the war going even when it threatens the king's reign.

Byte Me's picture

This is a bluff.

Yes, some of the "bomb fleet" needs updating. That's always going to be needed if you hold a nuclear arsenal; updating/ refurbing is a + for the MIC. This was in the pipeline ANYWAY irregardless of a D or R win.

T has got this out into the open so that it can be "discussed". Clever. The MIC will not gun for him.

The snowflakes will seriously freak out. Maybe some will die. (Of natural causes)

The MSM will have a field day up to the point where they realize they have swallowed the bait and are trapped!

This could lead to global disarmament. Think it through.

Good luck with disarming IsraHell...!

Byte Me's picture

Good luck disarming ANYONE at this stage.

This is an opening move. Russia wouldn't want to have another race. China has enough eco probs and riots to keep a lid on. Ditto India.

In this, Britain and France are bit-players.

IsraHell - frankly - is fukk all.

Israel is also a very small target.

Wrong. Arms Race didn't bust Soviet Union.

Do yourselves a favor...instead of the slow grind of watching your "hope" crumble, as it did for the Obummers, start off by making this guy PROVE he deserves your support...his actions so far (appointments, strong leanings toward Israel) are a path to status quo on steroids...start off with a high degree of skepticism and you can only be pleasantly surprised if wrong...
