Obama Under "Intense Pressure" To Release Evidence Proving Russians Hacked The Election

Tyler Durden's picture

As noted previously, at some point today the White House is set to unveil new sanction, and other retaliatory "measures" against Russia and specifically the Kremlin, in retaliation for what according to a constantly repetitive narrative has been Russian hacking of the US election. Obama will do so by using a 2015 executive order that would allow the president to freeze the US assets of Russians overseas who have engaged in cyber acts, even though such order only applies to actions that have threatened U.S. national security or financial stability, neither of which have yet been invoked in the current "hacking" scandal.  Further, per a "senior administration official," use of the existing law would require (1) actual election infrastructure to be designated as 'critical infrastructure' and (2) the administration to prove that such infrastructure was actually "harmed," conditions which the National Security Council say have not been met.

The problem is that if the administration relies on the 2015 Executive Order to launch this latest round of diplomatic "retaliation", it will also have to demonstrate some proof that the individuals or entities it names were involved in the scheme, and until now, the White House has provided no documentation to back up its official October assessment that the Russian government was attempting to “interfere” in the U.S. election besides just repeating the allegation over and over and over, as if that somehow makes it true.

Which perhaps is why this morning The Hill writes that the Obama administration is "under intense pressure to release evidence confirming Russian interference in the presidential election before leaving office."

As the website correctly note, "the administration up until now has provided little documentation to back up its official October assessment that the Russian government was attempting to “interfere” in the U.S. election." Actually, it has provided exactly zero documentation, but that has not stopped the media machine from parroting the claims and repeating it ad nauseam, in hopes the emotional appeals through repetition will make it factual.

Just as bad, the Hill also writes that nor has Obama "corroborated subsequent leaks from anonymous officials contending that the CIA believes the campaign was an attempt by Russian President Vladimir Putin to ensure Donald Trump’s victory."

So where are we in the process of producing evidence? Apparently nowhere:

President Obama has ordered the intelligence community to produce a complete review of its findings before Trump takes office on Jan. 20. The White House has said it will make as much of the report public as it can. But officials have warned that the document will contain “highly sensitive and classified information” and it is unclear how much concrete evidence it will be able to release.

Releasing any documentation of Russian interference would be a slap in the face to Trump, who has rejected assertions that the Kremlin was involved in the hacks on the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta. The president-elect and his team have treated any suggestion of Russian involvement as an attack on the legitimacy of his election win, and Republican leaders in Congress have treaded carefully on the issue.

Well, let Obama released the proof first, then we'll worry about "slaps in faces." For now, all we have are ever louder, if unsubstantiated allegations by the CIA:

The firestorm ignited by the CIA’s assessment has spurred calls from both parties for the administration to provide proof of Russian meddling. In late November, seven Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee urged the White House to declassify “additional information concerning the Russian Government and the U.S. election.”

As of last week, they had not yet received a response.

The House Intelligence Committee earlier this month demanded a briefing on the subject, but was rebuffed intelligence leaders, which said that they will not brief Congress again until the completion of the report for the White House.

Journalists have also pushed for more documentation. VICE journalist Jason Leopold and Ryan Shapiro, a Ph.D. candidate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against the CIA, the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence seeking records pertaining to Russian interference.

And even Trump’s transition team has said the White House should provide definitive proof to back up its claims. "If the CIA Director [John] Brennan and others at the top are serious about turning over evidence … they should do that," Trump aide Kellyanne Conway said earlier this month. "They should not be leaking to the media. If there's evidence, let's see it."

Meanwhile, Obama has asked the public to take the assessment of Russian interference purely on faith, suggesting that "the American people already know everything they need to know to accept the conclusions of the CIA report." Just like they knew all about Iraq's "Weapons of Mass Destruction."

"There are still a whole range of assessments taking place among the [intelligence] agencies," Obama told NPR earlier this month, referring to the report. “But that does not in any way, I think, detract from the basic point that everyone during the election perceived accurately — that in fact what the Russian hack had done was create more problems for the Clinton campaign than it had for the Trump campaign.”

Private security firms have provided more detailed forensic analysis linking two well-known Russian intelligence groups to the data breach at the DNC. Beyond that, the evidence of Russian interference is compelling, though circumstantial.

Russia has a long history of trying to influence elections across Europe, and intelligence experts say it’s plausible that Putin would see an upside to a Trump White House, given his expressed desire to “get along” with the Kremlin.  He hinted in the fall that he might refuse help to some NATO allies should they be attacked by Russia. The statement sent shock waves through the foreign policy community, as the alliance’s chief purpose has long been to serve as a check on Russian aggression.

Although there is disagreement among lawmakers about whether Russia intended to help Trump, few disagree that the DNC and Podesta hacks were in some way an attempt to meddle in the election. Public reporting and previous briefings by intelligence agencies appear to have convinced them of that.

To be sure, the neocons in the Senate are getting restless and are desperate to damage relations with Russia even more: “There are 100 United States senators. ... I would say that 99 percent of us believe that the Russians did this, and we’re going to do something about it,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) told CNN’s Jim Sciutto on “The Situation Room” on Tuesday.  Lawmakers have vowed to hold hearings on the matter when Congress returns in January.

Obama, meanwhile, has promised to deliver his report to Congress and release what he can as soon as the intelligence community completes it. “I’m sure what is happening right now is they are going through the calculus of, ‘How much intelligence, how many sources and methods are we willing to burn to make our point?’” said one former White House official.

“My guess is they will have information that indicates course of conduct and links to activities that suggest motivation,” but no smoking gun that will convince those who aren’t already convinced, he said.

“I think the link between what [the public] gets to see and whatever retaliatory action [Obama takes] is going to be very, very tight,” the former official said.  “Showing information is a necessary precondition for most of the public types of retaliation that have been contemplated.

Except, apparently, in this case, in which Obama is again set to launch a cyberwar shot across the Russian bow with the US public once again expected to believe that its administration would never lie to it.

And with that we await for Obama to disclose just which Russians it has decided to put on the latest sanctions "black list", and whose assets Washington believes it can confiscate without suffering consequences that are too great. And, of course, we will eagerly look forward to the imminent Russian counter-retaliation due out shortly after.

No doubt.  I've only been around these parts for a few months and have seen the comment section deteriorate something fierce.  The whole reason I started visiting this site daily was for the comment section.  I found I could learn more about what's really going on from the comment section than I could from most of the articles.

Now all I'm learning is how successful Obomber has been at stoking racial divides and how really, really, really, really, really really, really, and I do mean really stupid some people are.

You can see Obama's latest about hacking is all fake rhetoric. Based on supposed hack reports, he directly accuses and challenges Russia and actually threatens a cyber attack on them… and then he goes off on a golf vacation. It's clear that even Obama doesn't take himself, or the hacking reports, seriously. He makes being pathetic a true art form.

The Russians are just sailing along calmly doing their own thing, they sail by an island and that puts all the islanders in a real tizzy. The natives start to run around in circles, pointing, shouting, calling meetings, accusing each other, and generally doing a Keystone Cops routine.  The Russians scratch their heads in puzzlement and amusement and just sail on.

"We have cited numerous examples of Hillary mixing her State Department business with donors and benefactors of both the Clinton Foundation, and the Clintons personally. Those include the Uranium One deal and the Skolkovo deal, both of which also benefitted Russia’s strategic interests. In arguing what the media did right, Rutenberg linked to a single New York Times article about the Uranium One deal, written a year and a half before the election, to show that the media had “dug into the interests of the Clinton Foundation’s foreign donors.” They didn’t dig very deep."

After the investigation into the Clinton foundation and the Uranium One and the Skolkovo deals, then will be the time for investigation of the so-called Russian intervention or lack thereof into the US 2016 election. Several credible voices already have been raised saying it was LEAKS from inside the DNC, not HACKS from Russia. I think we should be very careful about the casualness of DNC insinuations and our responses to them, especially since the decades of Clinton abuses of the USA have so far escaped investigation and reaction.

The US, and whoever controls the Military-Intelligence-Industrial complexes, are pissed off at Russia for getting in the way of their plans to dominate the entire globe.  Russia helped expose the US and their role in creating, training, arming, and funding terrorist groups, which they helped defeat in Syria.  The sanctions and any related laws that are passed have two agendas.  One, to attempt to do financial harm to Russia and two, to degrade our freedom of speech and access to the truth.  Although the story about Russia hacking Clinton, Podesta, and the DNC is a monstrous lie, it doesn't matter.  Lying is a job requirement for these folks, many of whom take their orders from the CIA and other Deep State actors.  Unfortunately the US has the most powerful military and we are the ones who are forced to see our troops and resources used for nefarious purposes such as murdering people who stand in the way of our desires to control their natural resources and force them to use our money.  Obama is most likely a CIA agent.  The Clinton Foundation(s) is most likely a front for CIA money laundering for back ops.  Our media is packed with CIA operatives.  Don't hold you breath waiting for proof of anything from one of the most non-transparent and corrupt administrations in US history.

That's how it is with narcissists. They CANNOT see themselves any other way than the way they project the person they desire to be. Obama will coerce the government agency, the CIA, to make up a story for him, because he can't admit the election loss is due to him. He also blamed Hillary for the loss, so his last job is to protect his legacy, leaving as a "winner", and blaming the Russians. I'm convinced he wants to believe his own made up story. Very sad.

Obummer has 'proof'. The CIA bots are just working on the packaging. They'll probably show run of the mill internet traffic from Russia, but not directly related to anything. Or they show emails from somewhere nearby they got from the NSA and have some 'expert' say they have seen similar emails that traced to Russia. So, for sure they come up with something. Objectively, it will be inconclusive, but just 'damning' enough to be spun to fit the narrative. The reason its taking so long is it takes time to make bulls- look real, esp at this level. I expect something very soon, like early next week.

chindit13's picture

This is a perfect example of how easily led people can be, including the vocal membership here.

Think about what you think you know and how you know it. Be honest.

The entire "Russia did it" meme was first introduced in a debate, with Hillary uttering her now famous line, "17 US intel agencies agree that Russia did it". Trump immediately said she made that up, to which she merely re-iterated her claim, doubling down as is her wont.

Trump, though he did not know at the time, was right. Hillary made that up on the spot. Pure bullshit.

(While one could generously say there are 17 US intel agencies, the majority merely carry the "I" in their title, maybe to make lesser agencies feel good about themselves or something. For example, the Coast Guard has an intel element. To the Coast Guard, intel means coastal drug running data or maybe illegal Chinese fishing trawlers off the Georges Bank. No unrelated intel is shared with them by any other agency, so they would have no basis on which to 'agree' about Russia. Absent NSA, CIA and the FBI---the latter would handle a domestic hack allegation---the other dozen or so 'intel agencies' would be about as well informed, and their opinion would have about as much value, as the Coast Guard's. Hillary was engaging in sophistry, or lying depending on how generous one wants to be.)

Post the CIMC briefing to SSCI, when this thing gathered momentum, was based on a leak by a Dem Senator on SSCI. SSCI was not told by the CIMC briefers that anybody concluded anything. A range of possibilities was given, that's all. One Dem Senator made his own conclusion, then leaked it. If anything, the briefers would have been asked, "If it was Russia, would it be likely Putin knew", to which the answer would be "Yes", as the FSB does not operate any more independently than the CIA (despite widespread belief to the contrary both here and there). Intel may be independent, but CA is always at the request of, or with the signed approval of, either POTUS (US) or Putin (Russia). In the US, there must be a Presidential Finding, signed by the POTUS, and SSCI must be informed.

Now this is key: note that ALL statements alleging that the CIA 'concluded' it was Russia and Putin, and that it was specifically aimed at influencing the election, have come from 1) Obama, 2) Congress, and Dem Congress at that, and 3) Legacy media. No stated conclusion has come directly from CIA, NSA, ODNI nor FBI. Besides, Russia always has tried to influence US elections, such as 2008. Similarly, the US always tries to influence foreign elections, at least overtly, and occasionally covertly.

In the US---and perhaps every country---intel agencies serve two primary purposes. The first one is obvious: collect intel and engage in POTUS-directed and approved CA. The second one is not as widely realized. The second function is to act as the fallguy for the Administration. If a CA operation goes wrong, 'it's the CIA's fault'. If some geopolitical event seems surprising, "it's an intelligence failure". (For example: No WMD was no intel failure. The actual agency odds were ~15%, but Cheney/Wolfowitz/Perl/etc. did not want to hear it, and Tenet had been co-opted like a lapdog by Cheney.)

Intel agencies are reticent to offer any confirmation, because inscrutability serves a purpose. The range of opinions on an intel agency run the gamut from omnipotent demigod to Keystone Cops, and both opinions can be useful. If an adversary thinks an agency can do anything, the adversary will be hampered in its effectiveness by having to take extra time and care. If an adversary thinks an agency is a bunch of clowns, it might become reckless. An agency never wants it known what it actually can do, as well as what it cannot do.

Bottom line: until Brennan (or later, Pompeo), Clapper or Comey appear in a presser stating their 'conclusion', it's just what Obama or Pelosi or Anderson Cooper or HuffPo says, which is to say, it can safely be ignored.

Remember: Obama is trying to manufacture a positive legacy where none exists ('my campaigning for Hillary worked, except those pesky Russkis messed it up'), and the others are just Snowflakes looking for excuses.

Nobel secretary regrets Obama peace prize

Awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to US President Barack Obama in 2009 failed to achieve what the committee hoped it would, its ex-secretary has said.

Geir Lundestad told the AP news agency that the committee hoped the award would strengthen Mr Obama.

Instead, the decision was met with criticism in the US. Many argued he had not had any impact worthy of the award.

Mr Lundestad, writing in his memoir, Secretary of Peace, said even Mr Obama himself had been surprised.

"No Nobel Peace Prize ever elicited more attention than the 2009 prize to Barack Obama," Mr Lundestad writes.

"Even many of Obama's supporters believed that the prize was a mistake," he says. "In that sense the committee didn't achieve what it had hoped for".

I have concerns on this from different perspectives:  (And let me address proof second)

First:  What Obama ass clown is trying to do is re-write the laws to meet a crime!  What Obama is seeking to do is broaden existing legislation to include the breach of the DNC which is NOT a government system.  Something in the press conference Obama admitted himself.  So if Obama were to bring the DNC under the umbrella of critical infratsrutcure and Richard B Spencer runs for U.S. Congress then any information of Richard B Spencer would be critcal infratsucture protected!

The argument that the DEMOCRATS or REPUBLICAN political party (or any other extremist party) is part of, or excluded from being considered "official government" or "critical infratsructure" is where I have the problem with this!  Any politcal party hijacking the weapons of the countries arsenal of soft and hard power for political score keeping is frightening, and until Trump becomes a proven performer a damn poor precedent to set. Why not just outlaw all but the Facist party like Obama wants to do similar to Hitler?  Make the party and government one and the same?  Write any convenient law to do what you want and ignore that pesky thing called voting and referendums?

Ireespective of Obama's comments on Brexit (Unnaceptable) or his comments and State Departments sending money to Israel to meddle in that election, or his now recent comments he would win a third term, or wants to re-write legislation so it can meet a crime of his choosing.  What Obama is proposing is making the DNC part of the official US governemnt so it can be funded and supported IRRESPECTIVE OF MERIT and accountability!

Now on to Proof:

As it stands now the above is reason enough to just shout down this Obama ass-clown, but it gets worse.  The current re-written legislation to meet a crime is then adjudicated as a crime in a star chamber.  There isn't any transparency to a crime and the culprit.  Now cyber crimes have always been difficult in this respect however this is all the more reason to limit and not expand the definition of critical infrastructure.   But again the star-chamber proof isn't an excuse (lack of evidence) for the draconian move to make the DNC government.  Does this mean that one seeks now government approval to subpeona information that might show that Bernie Sanders was cheated information and monies by the DNC?

Finally while this dirty socksucker of a POTUS makes an ass-clown of himself with the above, genuine critical infrastructure has rotted on the vine.  Our electrical grid is a marvel of insecure and vulnerable interconnects.  (this onstensibly due to donations to the DNC).  Our communications grid Comcast and high speed internet, under the ass-clown in chief we spend more and receive less on an equal disparity to healthcare!   Costs up 100% in less than ten years!   Check your cable bill, costs up 100% in 10 years!  Where is the security?  Doesn't exist as again Comcast donated alll their money to the ass-clown in chief and the DNC!

So in all things that matter to Americans and people who pay their bills, who wanted some relief from the gouging and corrupt big business donors to the DNC, well Obama failed us!  Failed at Obamacare also and in prescriptions!  And not a single cock sucking banker went to jail and Soros that international criminal not brought to justice!

And ass-clown want to re-write the law to create a crime, offer no damn proof, and make the spectacular failure of the DNC his legacy as part of the government.  Never has such a spectacular fucking failure in a moment of such profound fucking denial been such an asshole in front of so many!

"PROOF?!?!  I DON'T NEED NO STINKING PROOF!!!  MICHELLE!!!  WHERE ELSE WE GOING ON VACATION BEFORE THESE DUMBASSES STOP PAYING FOR OUR VACATIONS????"

We're coming up to the end of the year and I'd like to nominate Jullian Assange as "Man of the Year."

He gave us the truth about Clinton and the DNC and it doesn't matter to me where he got it from.

Not that New World Order person TIME puts on their cover.

The only instances where TIME got it right was when they gave it to Hitler twice.

The leaks were from a righteously pissed off Bernie supporting DNC insider, not a Russian hack. I'll never believe otherwise.

Not even if the lie is repeated over and over again?
